The Post Up: Hornets Sting Suns

Bron reaches 10,000.

By: Holly MacKenzie

There were some good games around the league last night and the New Orleans/Phoenix contest was one of the most intriguing blowouts I have watched in awhile. Just to try and figure out what in the hell is going on with the Suns, it was entertaining. After New Orleans had struggled and came into the contest with Phoenix dropping three straight, they certainly took it to the Suns. They have now won all four meetings between the two this season.

I bet the Suns don’t want to meet New Orleans in the playoffs. Chris Paul, David West and Tyson Chandler kill the Suns. Paul to Chandler on the break for the dunk had to be the play of the night. At least of what I have seen. Everything was just too easy for New Orleans.

Amare has been fantastic offensively for the Suns, it is just that they look completely out of sorts.

LeBron became the youngest player to reach 10,000 points in the Cavs loss to the Celtics last night. Bron also re-injured that annoying ankle and is probably going to be really sore today. He played the second half of the game against Boston, but it didn’t matter as the Celtics feasted on the new-look Cavaliers.

Mickael Gelebale continued to get time in Seattle and he led Seattle in scoring again after now stringing together four games with 10 or more points. The Denver blowout was definitely one of the most lopsided games I have ever seen. Let’s see what they can do against some better competition as they try to secure themselves a playoff spot.

Bad news for Caron and the Wizards. An examination of his injured hip showed a small labral tear in the left joint after he had previously been diagnosed with a strained hip flexor. Here’s hoping for a speedy recovery Caron.

Another big night in a victory for Al Horford and the Hawks. Dropping 16 points, 14 rebounds and 4 assists, Horford was looking smooth again.

Larry Hughes had 29 points for the Bulls in their 113-107 victory against the Pacers. I will be watching to see if he can keep it up. I had been a Hughes fan and while he struggled mightily at times this season, I didn’t agree with the way the fans in Cleveland had turned on him.

It’s TNT time tonight and I can’t wait. Dallas @ San Antonio will be an intriguing match up and the Lakers and Miami should at least be entertaining. Maybe the Heat will be flying high after their big victory the other night? I most want to see JKidd and Dallas go up against Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, Tim Duncan and the Spurs. The more I think about them, the tougher the Spurs look.

Utah 103 Detroit 95

After a disappointing loss to the Timberwolves on Tuesday the Jazz were home and refocused against the Pistons last night, dropping them 103-95. While the Pistons would lead big early and go up by as many as 18 points in the first half, the Jazz weren’t about to lose a second consecutive game. After being down 53-41 at the break, Utah used a strong third quarter where they outscored Detroit 25-18 to cut the deficit to 71-67 at the start of the fourth. By the time the final period rolled around, Utah’s offense was clicking and they dropped in a 36-point effort in the final quarter while Detroit managed only 24 points after going scoreless for almost 12 minutes spanning the third and fourth quarters. Mehmet Okur provided a burst in the period, scoring 11 of his 24 points in the final 12 minutes of action. Besides Okur’s 24 points, Carlos Boozer scored 18 points to go with 16 rebounds, Paul Millsap scored 19 points and Deron Williams had a 14-point 14-assist double-double. The Pistons were led by Richard Hamilton’s 22 points as Chauncey Billups scored 21, Rasheed Wallace had 11 points and 9 rebounds and Tayshaun Prince added 11.

Boston 92 Cleveland 87

In a match up between two of the top teams in the Eastern Conference LeBron James became the youngest player to score 10,000 points and the Celtics got the victory. With James spraining an ankle and sitting out the final five minutes of the first half, the Cavs went into the break trailing 47-40. While they had their superstar back in the second half, things only got worse for them as they shot a dismal 38% from the floor as compared to the Celtics 52%. James was included in this bad shooting, finishing only 7-24 from the floor for his 26 points. After Boston opened the fourth with consecutive baskets, they extended their lead into double-digits and the advantage was not in doubt as they would stay up by double-figures until the final minute of the game. The Celtics were led by Ray Allen’s 22 points while Kevin Garnett scored 18 points, pulled down 11 rebounds, dished 5 assists and grabbed 4 steals. Paul Pierce scored 12 points and Leon Powe added 13. James finished with 26 points and 8 rebounds for Cleveland, Delonte West scored 20 points on 8-13 field goals as Zydrunas Ilgauskas had 8 points and 12 rebounds and Wally Szczerbiak added 12 points, on 13 shot attempts.

New Orleans 120 Phoenix 103

With each of these teams coming into the contest off of big losses, the intensity was high from the tip. The only problem for Phoenix was that they were unable to sustain that energy level while the Hornets excelled in the running game and ended up running the Suns out of the gym. While Phoenix led by as many as eight points in the first half, New Orleans used a late push in the second quarter to take a 59-55 advantage into the break. The third quarter was all theirs as they shot almost 70% in the period and outscored Phoenix 38-22 to turn the game into a blowout before the fourth quarter where they rolled to their fourth victory against the Suns in as many contests this season. Chris Paul was fantastic for the Hornets, finishing with 25 points and 15 assists as David West had 27 points and Tyson Chandler added 12 points and 15 boards. Peja Stojakovic added 17 points and Jannero Pargo dropped in 22 off of the bench. The Suns were led by Amare Stoudemire’s 34 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 blocked shots. Leandro Barbosa added 17 off of the bench, Shaquille O’Neal had 15 points, Raja Bell scored 14 and Steve Nash had 13 assists but managed only 8 points in the loss.

Denver 138 Seattle 96

After losing three straight games the Nuggets came in to Seattle hungry for a win. Shooting 67% for the game, they ended up torching Seattle from beginning to end. With Denver topping 30 in each of their four quarters, they took an 11-point lead after the first quarter and then turned that into a 64-45 advantage at the half. The second half was even worse for the Sonics who shot only 36% for the game after playing Golden State the night before and defensively had no answer for the surging Nuggets. George Karl pulled his starters at the end of the third and the Nuggets went into the fourth up 100-75. In the final period the lead only got larger as they topped their highest point-total of the season. Allen Iverson had 31 points to lead the Nuggets as Carmelo Anthony scored 16, Kenyon Martin had 23 points, Marcus Camby scored 12 points to go along with 14 rebounds and 5 blocked shots and Linas Kleiza and JR Smith added 15 points apiece. Kevin Durant and Michael Gelebale had 16 points apiece for the Sonics while Jeff Green and Johan Petro added 15 each in the loss.

Atlanta 123 Sacramento 117

In a match up against his former team Mike Bibby made sure to get the victory this time around after losing to the Kings in Sacramento last week. Thanks to a 24-point, 12-assist performance from Bibby, the Hawks dropped the Kings 123-117 as they continue their push to make the playoffs. After opening the game with a 40-point first quarter, the Hawks led by 12. This lead was short lived as the Kings came back to cut the deficit to 59-58 at the break. In the third, the Hawks would put together a run of their own and outscore Sacramento 34-27 in the period to go into the final period up 93-85. In the fourth it was a close race to the final buzzer with Bibby finding Zaza Pachulia in the final minute to extend their lead back into a three possession game. Besides Bibby’s 24 and 12 night, Joe Johnson scored 26 points, Josh Childress had 25 and Al Horford added a 16-point, 14-rebound double-double. Brad Miller had 25 points, 13 rebounds and 6 assists for the Kings, while Beno Udrih also scored 25 points, Ron Artest scored 23 points and Francicso Garcia added 14 in the loss.

Toronto 107 Minnesota 85

One night after their surprising take down of the Utah Jazz, Minnesota was in Toronto to face the Raptors. Things didn’t go quite as smoothly as the Jazz game as they were blown out 107-85 on the road. While the game started off alright for the TWolves with them going up by as man as 10 points in the first quarter, the Raptors came back from the deficit to trail by only two at the end of the first period. It was in the second and third quarters that Toronto blew the game open, outscoring Minnesota 58-37 over the span of the two quarters. The Raptors opened the third by going on a 10-3 run and Chris Bosh scored 14 of his 28 points in the quarter to help Toronto put the game out of reach. At the start of the fourth the Raptors led 84-65 and the Timberwolves never threatened in the final minutes. Bosh finished with 28 points and 7 rebounds, TJ Ford had 16 points off of the bench, Andrea Bargnani scored 12 and Jamario Moon added 11 points. Al Jefferson led the Wolves with 23 points, Randy Foye scored 18 and Rashad McCants added 19 off of the bench.

Philadelphia 101 Orlando 89

One night after their big road win in New Jersey, the Orlando Magic found themselves on the other side of the story in a blowout loss to Philadelphia. Philly’s home court was not kind to the Magic as they ended the first quarter being down eight, by a score of 33-25. Thanks to Andre Miller dropping in 22 of his 26 points in the first half of the game, the 76er’s held a 61-42 advantage at the break as Orlando never led in the game. During the second quarter, the Magic went scoreless for almost 10 minutes while Philadelphia ran circles around them, building their lead. The second half saw Orlando go on a 13-6 run to cut the Philly lead down to 13, but they would not be able to get any closer than nine over the final 12 minutes of the game. Besides Miller’s 26 points he dished 9 assists while Willie Green scored 26 points as well. Andre Iguodala added 24 points and 7 assists while Samuel Dalembert added 9 points and 12 boards. Hedo Turkoglu led the Magic in the losing effort with 20 points. Rashard Lewis scored 19, Dwight Howard added 14 points and 16 rebounds and Keith Bogans scored 13.

Those Pistons and Jazz…what a great game. Memo Okur has turned his season around.

Krayzie Bone says:
im in the camp that believes that steve nash’s underwhelming D was hidden by the Matrix. Now we se the results.

Feb.28 at 9:36 am

Ryne Nelson says:
I can second that, although Nash’s defense was always the one knock on his game.

Feb.28 at 9:37 am

Krayzie Bone says:
holly, do you have a satelite dish, or digital cable or something? From your writing, it sounds like you’re channel surfing these things.

Feb.28 at 9:40 am

namik says:
Is the Celtics defense really that good? When did Doc Rivers become a defensive mastermind? I always thought he was lucky to have TMac during his best years. Guess not. And I don’t care what anyone says, Chris Paul is already the best PG in the L. Offense, defense, passing and leading the team, this guy has it all. Can’t say the same for the guy who won consecutive MVPs. And Wade should’ve taken the season off on a high note. Lakers at LA? C’mon now.

Feb.28 at 9:41 am

DP says:
morining everyone.Chris Paul and Tyson Chandler. like a new verzion of Batman and Robin. Chandler just needs to become a more efficient “Robin” on the offensive end. Hey, did yall see that high school kid dunk off the inbound? That was a damn LeBron type dunk. play wit it.

Feb.28 at 9:41 am

Krayzie Bone says:
of course, but now, they don’t have an eraser. Phoenix has bad D before, now they have horrid D. Its not shaqs fault, he’s not a perimiter player, but with Amare being suspect, and grant hill being 35, and steve nash being a one way player, they are getting lit up every night, even by bad teams (see 114 points by memphis)

Russ Bengtson says:
Hughes the man now, dog.

Amare, LeBron, Dwight, Melo, Paul, Wade, Williams, Bynum etc. The next 10-15 years are gonna be GOOD.

Feb.28 at 9:44 am

Nash couldn’t guard me. Man is great but I have never really seen him in a defensive stance. I guess those legs start getting bad when you get older. play wit it.

Feb.28 at 9:45 am

Ryne Nelson says:
@DP - Yeah, I saw that HS play. It was excellent, but play of the year? Nah.

Feb.28 at 9:46 am

Krayzie Bone says:
Its actually wierd when you think about it. Nash is quick..why can’t he play better D?

Feb.28 at 9:46 am

TADOne says:
Krayzie Bone, it’s called NBA League Pass. I’m assuming you don’t have it.

Feb.28 at 9:47 am

DP says:
10,000 points at 23? and the 30 is the new 20 too? LeBron might be playing until he is 50 years old and he’ll still be dunking on cats by then. play wit it.

Feb.28 at 9:48 am

Krayzie Bone says:
Nope I do not. I don’t like watching stuff on my computer because of the choppiness (i have high speed but things don’t work as advertized).

Feb.28 at 9:49 am

DP says:
How much does League Pass cost? I’ve been trying to get it for the past 2 years. play wit it.

Feb.28 at 9:49 am

Russ Bengtson says:
If the Suns lose in the first round this year (which seems entirely possible) what does that mean for Mike D’Antoni’s future? He doesn’t seem like the right coach for a team with Shaq in the post. I just hate how the Suns went from being a team with a definite gameplan and identity to this gross hybrid that seems destined to fail.

Feb.28 at 9:50 am

Eboy says:
TAD, any words on your boys complete meltdown in Mormon land?

Feb.28 at 9:51 am

TADOne says:
DP: It all depends on who your cable or sattelite provider is. The normal price for the full season is like $180.

Feb.28 at 9:51 am

Ryne Nelson says:
Tad, I’d like your prognosis on Okur and the Jazz.

Feb.28 at 9:51 am

Krayzie Bone says:
I agree russ. The gamble looks like a loss. I say this as a man who really wanted to see Nash win it all (Nash is second to Wayne Gretzky in the Canadian sports pantheon right now. Unless Wayne chokes his wife to death, that will remain his place for all time)

Feb.28 at 9:52 am

TADOne says:
Eboy: Only thing I got to say is I’m glad the Jazz won’t be making the finals, because they would sweep us. F*cking Okur.

Feb.28 at 9:52 am

Ryne Nelson says:
Larry Brown to coach the Big Cactus. Just a thought.

Feb.28 at 9:53 am

TADOne says:
Gretzky would still be #1.

Feb.28 at 9:53 am

Jake Appleman says:
I’m usually not here because i’m usually asleep during the Post Up’s comment heavy period, so hello, and probably good-bye in a few minutes, but I just needed to give Russ props on his Sean Connery/Larry Hughes comment. Ok, that was. Sleeeeeeeep.

Feb.28 at 9:54 am

DP says:
damn. Kroger ain’t payin me money like that to get League Pass. Guess I’m going to have to save my next 6 paychecks and I’ll be able to get it for next season. play wit it.

Feb.28 at 9:54 am

Jake Appleman says:
*OK, that was it. Bye now. For real. Sleeeeeep.

Feb.28 at 9:54 am

Eboy says:
I don’t think they’d sweep, but how they did they give up a double digit lead? They Pistons usually keep that sh*t up until the deciding minutes. And don’t think the Jazz can’t make noise in May and June, they just don’t get blown by the media, but they have the type of team that can give ANYONE a problem.

Feb.28 at 9:59 am

TADOne says:
Eboy: It was actually tied with 1:30 left, but Okur started slinging in 3’s from everywhere. For some reason, we always nut up against the Jazz. I hate Carlos Boozer.

Feb.28 at 10:00 am

TADOne says:
Jazz ain’t beating the Lakers or Spurs though.

Feb.28 at 10:00 am

Ryne Nelson says:
Deron Williams, by Vince’s definition, is a franchise player. He keeps the confidence of his team in situations like last night. He’s a big-game type player who never gets flustered.

Feb.28 at 10:03 am

Krayzie Bone says:
The playoff bound teams in the west all look good (except the setting suns).

Feb.28 at 10:03 am

Ryne Nelson says:
Are the Suns really playoff bound?

Feb.28 at 10:03 am

Eboy says:
I wouldn’t be so sure, TAD.

Feb.28 at 10:04 am

Krayzie Bone says:
that would be a frightening collapse Ryne, but the west is that tough. good point.

Feb.28 at 10:04 am

TADOne says:
How much money you got E?

Feb.28 at 10:05 am

Eboy says:
I’ve said it, I think 13 times now, the team(s) that go into the playoffs hot are going to be the favorites, regardless of standings. Any team that’s hot now is nice and all, but it won’t matter if they trip up slightly in the playoffs cause the West is that good from 1-10.

Feb.28 at 10:07 am

namik says:
I would agree with Eboy only because I saw Deron carve up the Lakers early in the season. If he does that 4 games in a row, with Boozer beasting inside, they might have a shot. Not with the Spurs though. Thats why these playoffs are all about matchups and thats why this month is gonna be fun because ALL the teams will be playing hard to avoid bad matchups for themselves, and even then it might not be enough.

Feb.28 at 10:07 am

Krayzie Bone says:
Agreed Eboy. The parity in the west is even more impressive than the confrence’s dominance

Feb.28 at 10:08 am

Eboy says:
What, that they can’t make it, or they won’t beat the Lakers or the Spurs? I, unlike the rest of the robots here, am not sold on dem Laker boys, and the Spurs need to be tightened up in the first round and not try to coast through cause that sh*t may have worked in past seasons but that’s not happening this one.

Feb.28 at 10:09 am

Ryne Nelson says:
Still, being hot doesn’t last through fourth playoff rounds. The best teams will win in the end. Meaning, it’s going to be a Boston/Lakers Final this spring.

Feb.28 at 10:10 am

Ryne Nelson says:
Is it safe to say whoever wins it in the West will win it all? Realistically, I think yes.

Feb.28 at 10:10 am

namik says:
Don’t worry Eboy, you’ll come around. Just like the “robots” whatever that means.

Feb.28 at 10:10 am

Eboy says:
That said, the only team I really don’t think that can run the table in the West is the Warriors cause of their style. They have to play their game 12 times to advance to the Finals and that’s asking way too much. A series? Maybe 2, is possible, but improbable. Denver is just above them because they can play the half court game, but unless they are playing D every game, their run will be short and sweet.

Feb.28 at 10:11 am

Eboy says:
Rynocerous, don’t be so certain about the Celtics. You may be in for a long summer in your mansion.

Feb.28 at 10:11 am

namik says:
If the Celtics make it, I’m not so sure. That’s unless LeBron f*cks it all up like last year.

Feb.28 at 10:13 am

TADOne says:
Not a robot E, just not sold on the Jazz. I know they just beat my boys, but they always beat Detroit. We haven’t beat them since ‘02. It is quite depressing. Don’t get me wrong, I like Deron and think the Jazz are very capable of making some noise, but I’m just not sold on them winning in a 7 game series against the West elite because they are awful on the road.

Feb.28 at 10:14 am

TADOne says:
No Ryne, it is not safe or realistic.

Feb.28 at 10:14 am

Ryne Nelson says:
@Eboy - I think it’s going to be one of the closest Eastern Conf. battles this season, without a doubt. But my gut tells me that Boston is going to come out of it. With experimented vets P.J. Brown and Sam Cassell, they should be able to knock off the aging Pistons.

Feb.28 at 10:14 am

Russ Bengtson says:
No one here is a robot. Ignorance is bliss.

Feb.28 at 10:16 am

Eboy says:
I didn’t mean you, TAD, but if you want to be programmed too…….feel free.

Feb.28 at 10:16 am

Ryne Nelson says:
@Tad - Putting your team affiliation aside, do you really think there’s a better team than the Spurs or Lakers in the East?…a team that is TRULY better?

Feb.28 at 10:17 am

Eboy says:
Hmmm……..no one in particular is named and people are taking the title and running with it? I’m like Malware in this bit*h!

Feb.28 at 10:18 am

TADOne says:
Ryne: Team affiliation aside, Boston or Detroit can beat both of those teams in a 7 game series. If you don’t see that, then you are blind.

Feb.28 at 10:19 am

TADOne says:
Can I be called Duncan now?

Feb.28 at 10:19 am

Eboy says:
Uhm, Rynocerous, the “World’s Greatest Basketball Ever Created And Supported By The Most HangerOns” has NEVER played a playoff game in it’s current form and until they beat someone in that format they ain’t sh*t. You can apply that to both your Finals picks. The Pistons and Spurs are the favorites, regardless of what you are told here or at your ESPN boards because they have been there over and over.

Feb.28 at 10:19 am

Russ Bengtson says:
Ryne: It’s not about what team is TRULY better. It’s what TAD just said. Anything can happen in seven games–and Boston and Detroit (and, if LeBron is on, Cleveland) are capable of beating anyone.

they had to mop up the blood. Nate tried to block the shot but his finger went INTO Jason’s eye. Blood and mess, a scratched Cornia. D O N E

Feb.28 at 10:26 am

Ryne Nelson says:
In each of the last five meetings between Chris Paul and Steve Nash, CP3 has gotten more points, steals, rebounds (4 of last 5), and gotten less turnovers. The Hornets are 4-1 in their last five against Phoenix. Does Paul just have Nash’s number? Despite age differences, I’m inclined to say I’d rather have Paul running the point.

Feb.28 at 10:26 am

TADOne says:
Hmmmm, Holly conveniently avoided posting the Knicks/Cats summary. It’s probably for the best.

Ryne Nelson says:
@TAD - Did you catch Jamal Crawford’s bonehead missed dunk?

Feb.28 at 10:31 am

TADOne says:
I actually saw none of the Knicks/Cats contest. I was trying to stay awake. But Jamal missing a dunk sounds about right.

Feb.28 at 10:31 am

Ryne Nelson says:
The ‘JRich incident’ was almost identical to the ‘Gerald Wallace incident’ — blow to the face, fall back gracefully, roll over onto stomach, hands under forehead, lie there for some time. The different being JRich was just scratched. He’ll be fine.

Feb.28 at 10:32 am

BETCATS says:
i cant find one, but this is the only article http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/scorecard/nbanews.asp?articleID=227433 and Jason say their is no scrach but i dont know, their was a lot of blood and that Stephanie Ready lady said it was scratched

Feb.28 at 10:32 am

TADOne says:
Russ, were you at the game?

Feb.28 at 10:32 am

BETCATS says:
I saw that off the backboard mess Ryne. Nasty if it went in

Feb.28 at 10:33 am

Ryne Nelson says:
@TAD - No, this wasn’t an ordinary dunk. This was a completely unnecessary, off-the-backboard showboat dunk attempt during a close game. It was a big conversation point with Coach Thomas after the game. I’d link the YouTube, but that needs moderation.

Feb.28 at 10:34 am

Eboy says:
Wouldn’t it have been worse if they lost by 30?

Feb.28 at 10:36 am

TADOne says:
Sounds about par for the course with Jamal. He ceases to surprise me anymore.

Feb.28 at 10:36 am

BETCATS says:
well scoring threat #1 was Okafor / Matt Carrol so i expected a 30 + point loss once Jason left. We were up when he was in but we couldnt hold the lead

BETCATS says:
whats a labrum?

Feb.28 at 10:41 am

TADOne says:
For the sake of it being glossed over becaus they lost, congrats go out to King James for being the youngest to reach 10,000 career points. Anyone think he will be the leader at the end of his journey? I certainly do.

Feb.28 at 10:41 am

TADOne says:

Feb.28 at 10:43 am

TADOne says:
Yeah, sucks for Caron and me. I’m going to see the Wiz/Hornets game in DC on Sunday, and I’m upset that neither Caron or Gil will be playing. Then again, I’m mainly going to see CP3 anyway.

Feb.28 at 10:44 am

Ryne Nelson says:
@TAD - What are the odds Dale Davis resigns with the Pistons today or tomorrow?

Feb.28 at 10:45 am

Ryne Nelson says:
LeBron is a train. The only thing that can stop him would be injury, but he’s as tough as they come.

Feb.28 at 10:46 am

TADOne says:
Probably pretty good. I think PJ was being looked at, but he signed with Boston. And with Magloire in Dallas, there really is no one else out there.

Feb.28 at 10:47 am

Since we haven’t touched on this in a minute, where does everyone see the MVP race at this point? Obviously, KG has fallen back and the Cavs are still up and down. At this point, as much as it pains me to say, KB may be the favorite. CP3 is still in the discussion obviously, but Nash certainly isn’t.

Feb.28 at 11:52 am

Russ Bengtson says:
Kobe. CP3. KG. Bron.

Feb.28 at 11:54 am

TADOne says:
I’m with you on that list Russ, but I would swap Bron and KG.

Feb.28 at 11:56 am

Tariq says:
For this season, as much as for previous snubs: Kobe. You could say that in previous seasons team success hurt his chances, but still. If Dirk has a trophy, Kobe should get one. I know I may have abandoned my usual calm, rational, logical, measured approach and gone all Russ on you, but what can I say.

TADOne says:
DP: I’m guessing Arabic. Either that or something Tariq and Eboy made up to declare their love for each other and fly under the radar.

Feb.28 at 12:20 pm

Tariq says:
TAD: While that sounds like a great idea, it’s actually Arabic. Did you really decipher it, Eboy?

Feb.28 at 12:25 pm

Eboy says:
Not me, but the intern that I referenced.

Feb.28 at 12:27 pm

Tariq says:
So what did I say?

Feb.28 at 12:27 pm

TADOne says:
Eboy: International Man of Mystery.

Feb.28 at 12:33 pm

Eboy says:
TAD, I’m always trying to stay ahead of the curve. And my friend, Tariq, you can put the words out in English if you feel the need. I’m fine with just knowing but it can be put out for the rest of our e-family if you’d like.

Sh*ting on yourself while playing already has a name (maybe this was already mentioned, but)which is called “The Hurleys”
Bobby at Duke, circa 90, with the runs literally running down his leg as he scampered off to the locker room.

Feb.28 at 1:00 pm

Tom says:
lol…..did that actually happen Cub? Things like that is why Youtube exists, I’m gonna go look for a clip now.

Feb.28 at 1:04 pm

Eboy says:
Hurley was always a sh*thead but that took it to new extremes.

Feb.28 at 1:05 pm

TADOne says:
How do i not know this Cub?! If someone happens to find this video, please let me know. That would be the greatest thing yet.

Feb.28 at 1:06 pm

TADOne says:
Sounds kind of like his career, actually.

Feb.28 at 1:18 pm

Cub Buenning says:
Yes, it happened. At Cameron. I can still picture him skipping off the court; his pasty leg stained with a dark refuse.
TAD, you mean his pro one, right?
Although I dispised him when i was young, he was one of the best college point guards, ever.
Nice E, nice.

Feb.28 at 1:18 pm

Tariq says:
Speaking of LeBron being good, a friend of mine keeps making the argument that Bron is too reliant on his physical gifts…that’s why he thinks Carmelo is a more…I don’t know…let’s say “artful” player. So he thinks that Bron will suffer more as he ages. Thoughts?

Feb.28 at 1:19 pm

Tariq says:
I guess the fact that Bron is an exquisite passer is of no particular importance.

Feb.28 at 1:20 pm

DP says:
Bobby Hurley was straight gutta man. play wit it.

Feb.28 at 1:20 pm

TADOne says:
Yeah, his pro career Cub. I’m quite aware of his and Laettner’s college careers. F*ck Duke!

Feb.28 at 1:21 pm

TADOne says:
Your friend is an idiot Tariq.

Feb.28 at 1:21 pm

Eboy says:
If Lebron can someohow get the “switch” and can flip it like MJ/Kobe, he will be on a plane of pure talent/drive/competitiveness never seen before.

Feb.28 at 1:22 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Bobby Hurley’s pro career followed the trajectory of his car.

Feb.28 at 1:23 pm

DP says:
Carmelo is getting better every year Riq. I mean LeBron is too but Carmelo is finally strarting to rebound and he is becoming a more efficient passer(just a shlight bit). Melo just needs to learn how to play defense. It’s not good when you score 40 and they guy next to you scores 30. play wit it.

Feb.28 at 1:23 pm

Tom says:
Tariq: I think that will just happen naturally as lebron gets older. But now, when his athleticism lets him get to the rim literally whenever he wants, he’d have to be crazy not to take advantage…….or Vince Carter

Feb.28 at 1:25 pm

TADOne says:
That was funny as hell, but just plain cold, Russ.

Feb.28 at 1:26 pm

DP says:
I wonder if Lebron will ever dunk on Kobe in his career? That would be freakin sick. play wit it.

Feb.28 at 1:30 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Carmelo and Iverson should probably be split up. Denver would be better off trying to get a top-flight point guard and a defense-first two guard to put alongside Carmelo, Camby and Kenyon.

Feb.28 at 1:30 pm

Tom says:
And this Bobby Hurley story gives whole new meaning to being a dookie

Feb.28 at 1:34 pm

DP says:
I would trade Allen Iverson for Andre Miller. Makes perfect sense when you think about it. play wit it.

Feb.28 at 1:34 pm

Eboy says:
Nice Tom.

Feb.28 at 1:35 pm

Tariq says:
Russ: But AI and Melo look so cute with their matching headbands…Speaking of which, that probably rules the Bulls out of any potential Iverson trade.

Feb.28 at 1:35 pm

Candice says:
They had Andre Miller already and didn’t get nowhere with him either.

Feb.28 at 1:38 pm

DP says:
It’s called defense if the Nuggets(excluding Camby) didn’t know by now. It’s real easy with some practice and if your man gets beat you are supposed to have defensive help. But I don’t think the Nuggets learned that when they were in college. play wit it.

Feb.28 at 1:40 pm

TADOne says:
I actually learned that in junior high.

Feb.28 at 1:41 pm

DP says:
Maybe you can teach them you cool skills then TAD. play wit it.

Feb.28 at 1:42 pm

DP says:

Feb.28 at 1:45 pm

TADOne says:

Feb.28 at 1:45 pm

Feb.28 at 1:46 pm

TADOne says:
My skills have me on here talking to you DP.

Feb.28 at 1:46 pm

TADOne says:
That would be cruel.

Feb.28 at 1:53 pm

Candice says:
Also before AI got traded to Denver they were a bad defensive team then. Karl seems to like small back courts. They should play Khouba more and let him concentrate on defense. That’s who their 2 gaurd was when the season started.

Feb.28 at 1:57 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
I suppose they should wait and see how the playoffs go this year, assuming they make it. Either Nene or Kenyon needs to go, too. Can’t have that money locked up in three bigs–and Camby is more or less irreplaceable. Calderon and Kapono would be interesting in Denver.

Feb.28 at 1:59 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
And man, get J.R. Smith out of there. He thinks he can get away with acting like AI and Melo–which is all well and good when you’re an All-Star, which he decidedly isn’t. He needs to play for the Spurs or the Pistons and get put in his place.

Feb.28 at 2:00 pm

Tariq says:
they should trade Iverson for Sloop John B.

Feb.28 at 2:01 pm

TADOne says:
One of the combo guards on Memphis like Lowry or Crittenton would look good on the Nugs too.

Feb.28 at 2:02 pm

TADOne says:
Detroit almost traded for JR Smith too.

Feb.28 at 2:05 pm

Candice says:
Russ I think anything can happen in the playoff’s. Even with them out now I think they make it. Also they haven’t went on one of their runs yet that they typical do in the second half. Utah can even slip up also and they can get the division still. Phoenix for example have dropped 2 spots because of last night loss.

Feb.28 at 2:07 pm

TADOne says:
Utah isn’t slipping.

Feb.28 at 2:09 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
I don’t see Utah slipping below Denver. And if Denver makes the playoffs (which seems likely) but loses in the first round (which also seems likely), they’ll have to make some changes. Their payroll is up there.

Feb.28 at 2:11 pm

Candice says:
Denver was trying to trade Nene, tried to get Andre Miller, Delonte West, and of course Artest in which Karl didn’t want. It’s not like they didn’t try to do anything.

Feb.28 at 2:15 pm

TADOne says:
They didn’t do anything. What they did was ‘attempt’ to do something.

Feb.28 at 2:16 pm

TADOne says:
Hopefully they do ’something’ at the end of the seasn and fire Karl.

Feb.28 at 2:21 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
I’m not sure if any of those attempts, had they happened, would have made things that much better. I think they need to change the core, not the skin. I still don’t quite get the Artest attempt, unless he can play the 2.

Feb.28 at 2:23 pm

Michael says:
Phoenix better hope they don’t play Utah, New Orleans, or Golden State in the first round cause they will lose. For all the talk about Shaq, their biggest problem is the fact that Steve Nas continues to get destroyed by the better pg’s int he league. As for Larry Hughes, iexpect himt o flourish in the Chi. In Clevland he suffered because Lebron had the ball in his hands at all time, making Larry completly ineffective.

Feb.28 at 2:26 pm

TADOne says:
Larry made Larry completely effective.

Feb.28 at 2:47 pm

Candice says:
I think if Karl would just set play’s it would help them out. Especially since they have no pg because Anthony Carter is not the best. Maybe they should interchange the pg posistion between AI and Carter for match-up purposes. For example when they play Phoenix next week make Nash guard AI.

Feb.28 at 2:53 pm

Co Co says:
So I’m a little late, but I appreciate the Finding Forrester reference Russ.

Feb.28 at 2:56 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Thanks! I sat through that dreck in the theater. Still have flashbacks.

Feb.28 at 2:59 pm

Co Co says:
Damn Russ. I liked Finding Forrester I think. I haven’t seen it in a while, but I don’t know if it was dreck. (Russ’s word of the day) Thanks!

Feb.28 at 3:03 pm

TADOne says:
I don’t think the movie was a ‘dreck’, but hearing that sentence out of Connery’s mouth was quite disturbing/hilarious.

Feb.28 at 3:07 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
It was no “Eddie”.

Feb.28 at 3:11 pm

Cub Buenning says:
Owner Stan Kroenke is already strategically placing sticks of dynamite in areas of the team in the event they endure another 1st-round exit. Agreed on the point-guard thing with Denver, hence my tirade the other day about AI playing more point than scorer. I decided to dig up the stat yesterday, and it was 22-2 when AI goes for 10+assists.

Feb.28 at 3:12 pm

Cub Buenning says:
They should run Linas at the 2 and let Kuba and JR fill in the defensive/offensive roles.
Linas can’t check any 2-guards in the league, but he always brings ENERGY, which the team always seems to lack.

Feb.28 at 3:16 pm

TADOne says:
What is Lina’s official poistion? Is a 3 or a 4?

Feb.28 at 3:20 pm

Cub Buenning says:
He backs up MELO, which would make him a 3.

Feb.28 at 3:20 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
The Nuggets are kind of like an A-list version of the Knicks–too many big-name, big-salary guys that think they should be scorers/starters, and a coach who seems content to just throw guys out there and see what happens. They need a philosophy, and a point guard. And a defensive coordinator.

Feb.28 at 3:22 pm

Co Co says:
And a coach, I’m almost certain that’s George corpse on the bench.

Feb.28 at 3:23 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
They could probably bring in Jason Williams cheap next year, but that might do more harm than good. Duhon and Hughes for Iverson?

Feb.28 at 3:23 pm

TADOne says:
And a GM. Has Kiki left yet?

Feb.28 at 3:24 pm

TADOne says:
I know Russ just wants to see Ivy on his team, but that trade may actually work.

Feb.28 at 3:26 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
I’m actually uneasy about Iverson as a Bull–their backcourt is small enough. Although if they did that, started Iverson and Sefolosha with Hinrich the first guard off the bench, and then pulled off a sign-and-trade with Gordon for some sort of center, it could work out for both teams.

Feb.28 at 3:29 pm

TADOne says:
Of course, putting JR Smith and Larry Hughes on the same team could be a monumental disaster.

Feb.28 at 3:30 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
They’d have to get rid of J.R., too. I like the idea of him going to San Antonio or Detroit. Worked for Stephen Jackson.

Feb.28 at 3:34 pm

Jim Mora says:
I think holly will be the youngest slam writer to reach 10000 comments, if not already done

Feb.28 at 3:40 pm

TADOne says:
I actually like JR, because if he could keep his head on straight, he could be a very good player. I guess like you said, he needs a veteran team to rein him in.

Feb.28 at 3:40 pm

Cub Buenning says:
Yes, Russ, an IDENTITY. They have nothing of the sort.
KIKI left a couple years ago; 1 year at ESPN, now an asst. GM with someone…..

Feb.28 at 3:44 pm

TADOne says:
I thought their identity was the Melo and Bubba Show?

Feb.28 at 3:52 pm

TADOne says:
Cub: What do you think of Kiki running the Knicks?

Feb.28 at 4:09 pm

Eboy says:
…………..

Feb.28 at 4:25 pm

Ben Osborne says:
Holly rules.

Feb.28 at 4:28 pm

TADOne says:
So close to 300. Oh well. E, I’m pissed right now because the Wiz/Hornets game Sunday isn’t going to have the same flavor it should have if Caron and Gil was playing. Looks like i’ll be CP3 watching the majority of the game. Then again, maybe DeShawn will go off for 33 again.

Feb.28 at 4:41 pm

Eboy says:
Considering Holly hasn’t been around all day, yeah I agree, she does rule. TAD, that game is going to be a destruction but to see Chris roll through the Wiz will definitley be entertaining.

Feb.28 at 5:41 pm

Cub Buenning says:
TAD, that is the problem.
Basketball is played with 5 guys a side.
Holly hates basketball.

Feb.28 at 5:45 pm

Cub Buenning says:
NO comment on KIKI and the Knicks.
SKITA aside, his drafts/moves haven’t worked as expected, but at the time, he was given nothing but adulation.
DRAFT-NENE over STAT, MELO, LINAS were all his AND that kenyon deal where they gave NJ about 8-9 1st-rounders for the ability to pay him 800-trillion.

Feb.28 at 6:07 pm

TADOne says:
In all fairness, a few teams passed up on Amare in the draft over ‘character issues’. As for Kenyon, it certainly seemed like a good idea at the time. And Holly, if you ever come back thru today, have a great weekend. Everyone else as well. I w
