Taking Advantage of Yao’s Injury
The League is still coming to grips with yesterday’s wholly shocking news that Yao Ming is going to miss the remainder of the season (including the Playoffs). To some - Rockets fans; the Eastern Conference - it’s sad, to others, it’s a chance to make the Playoffs in a hyper-competitive conference.
The Golden State Warriors are one team that’s expected to take advantage of the opportunity:
“I hate to see any player get injured from any team, especially our players, so it’s bad news,” Warriors coach Don Nelson said of Yao, who has a stress fracture in his left foot.
“Bottom line is, there are eight spots, and we’re tying to get one of them. We’ve got to keep winning no matter what.”
G-State is currently sitting 2.5 games behind Houston (who, sans Ming, won their 13th straight last night), and unless T-Mac accidentally falls into the rejuvenation machine, the Warriors could and should leap frog Houston in the standings by the time it’s all said and done.
As the old saying goes, one man’s season-ending injury is another’s ticket to the postseason. So it goes.

Steven Jesse Jackson is behind this somehow. Aside: why we calling Jax ‘Whoo!’ when his real name is great as is?

Warriors would get in regardless of Yao’s health. Its the Nuggets that were struggling to make it in.

I feel bad for Yao. His trip to the hall is going to be undermined by his body, not to mention the shot at a ring.

They are still a great defensive team (maybe better with mutombo) and have offensive options other than Yao. Scola is a legit low post scorer (7 for 7 last night, 14 points).

I feel bad for Yao, you don’t wish that upon anybody obviously, but if there is one team I want to see in the playoffs out West, it’s Baron and his crew. (and his beard) - we all know the 8th spot will be decided on the final day of the regular season, this will be interesting.

Stephen’s new nickname should be “The Reverend”, hell with the way the Warriors play, he could be Reverend Run.

I agree with Coco and nick, it mayhave just been the wizards last night, but they play enough of “those” teams to compete for the 8th, if not the 7th spot. If you ask me the real problem is this 3 top seeds from each division crap, they need to get rid of that ASAP, i wish Utah ended up just above .500 so they’d realize how stupid it is..

RV: so the NBA can admit they are still wrong with the “new and improve” playoff seeding? Stern ain’t gonna bulge again. the best way to do this really is just to do league wide 1-16 straight up, but that will completely kill the concept of conference, and as we all know, stern loves to stick to the rules 100% and exclaims “die non-conformists die!”

yes, the rockets COULD make the playoffs w/out yao, BUT, they play the west conf… so, NO F***** WAY in the east they could make it with no yao or t-mac though…
