Shaq Being Traded To Phoenix?

by Lang Whitaker

I guess the Suns feel they’re not slow enough, because they’re reportedly talking about moving Shawn Marion for The Diesel. Wouldn’t it be fitting if the West came down to Shaq vs. Kobe again?

hahaa just sent Russ a message about this thinking WTF it had to be wrong. And Shaq playing alongside Amare and Nash just seems weird! Bet Raja and Shaq could swap some stories though. hhaah

I think the Lakers front line of doom would have a HARD time with Old Shaq and New STAT.

Feb.5 at 9:12 pm

Holly MacKenzie says:
could you imagine? Kobe not getting out of the 1st round because of Shaq AND Phx? damn, that would be rough.

Feb.5 at 9:13 pm

Lang Whitaker says:
Rough, but also hilarious.

Feb.5 at 9:14 pm

white hot eboy says:
Lang is very mean spirited.

Feb.5 at 9:14 pm

Holly MacKenzie says:
Did you see the Hawks game last night, Lang?

Feb.5 at 9:16 pm

Reggie Evans says:
Where’s the punchline? Shaq is washed up. Andrew Bynum will destroy him.

Feb.5 at 9:16 pm

Lang Whitaker says:
Most of it…I was in Atlanta but couldn’t get to the game so I watched on TV. Rise up, Hawks!

Feb.5 at 9:16 pm

white hot eboy says:
I don’t know, but the Suns would seem to be terribly competitive, regardless of the pace change. Nash could at least figure out how to get his big ass the ball.

Feb.5 at 9:17 pm

Lang Whitaker says:
BTW, Miami might be nice with Marion and Wade…

Feb.5 at 9:18 pm

white hot eboy says:
This would be way more big if it was 5 years ago, but a change of scenary might be just what the doctor ordered to get Shaq a tad more motivated.

Feb.5 at 9:18 pm

namik says:
Do it please!!! With all the pouting and b*tching that Shaq is gonna do about minutes, touches and everything else under the sun, he’s gonna make Shawn Marion look like Kevin Johnson. Plus Kobe would foul him out by himself like christmas in 2005. And that was when Shaq could move and jump.

Feb.5 at 9:19 pm

Reggie Evans says:
Who’s afraid of the big bad washed up Shaq?

Feb.5 at 9:19 pm

white hot eboy says:
Might is a funny word Lang. I don’t know how long nice would take to form, though. A couple of seasons, for sure.

Feb.5 at 9:20 pm

Holly MacKenzie says:
Marion and Wade… I see lots of dunks. It would be fun. At least more fun than Shaq has been. Are they still talking of Marion and Diaw in the deal? I’m too lazy to click the link.

Feb.5 at 9:21 pm

white hot eboy says:
Marion and Banks, Holly.

Feb.5 at 9:21 pm

namik says:
Unless Nash can figure out how to get Shaq a pair of new legs, I highly doubt getting him the ball will do much good. Plus they loose a good perimeter defender who can guard 1-4 and despite his complaining, plays hard. Shaq doesn’t usually play hard, but if he starts complaining, he stops playing completely. Miami fans should be happy about this though.

Feb.5 at 9:21 pm

Captain America says:
Is Steve Kerr still hung over from the Super Bowl? How stupid is this…

Feb.5 at 9:21 pm

Holly MacKenzie says:
yes, laker ball movement. Lang, I missed the Hawks game but Smith’s line? Crazy! What’s the deal on these attitude problems that have been mentioned all day around here? anything legit or just the usual?

Feb.5 at 9:22 pm

Lang Whitaker says:
You kids talk it out…I’m working on Lakers/Nets game notes. Back to the TV…

Feb.5 at 9:22 pm

Holly MacKenzie says:
ohh Banks. I’d like to see him somewhere other than Phx where he can try to get some burn. I always thought he’d be decent. And, then GP went and messed that up for us.

Feb.5 at 9:23 pm

Reggie Evans says:
So, can we do some retrospection and decide that Shaq was the real cancer in the Lakers locker room?

Feb.5 at 9:23 pm

Lang Whitaker says:
@Holly: That’s people talking who don’t know what they’re talking about.

Feb.5 at 9:23 pm

Holly MacKenzie says:
Oh Lang, you and Ben have just made my night. ps… Kobe’s block on Kidd was pretty nicee, hey?

Feb.5 at 9:24 pm

Holly MacKenzie says:
Thanks, Lang. I figured as much but, thought I’d ask.

Feb.5 at 9:25 pm

namik says:
Reggie when was that in doubt?

Feb.5 at 9:26 pm

Walter Olivera says:
IF they make this deal, they will struggle at first,BUT later they will make A MAGICAL RUN ALL THE WAY TO THE CHAMPIOSHIP.SHAQ + STAT or
BYNUM+ GASOL, SUNS WILL SCORCH LA

Feb.5 at 9:26 pm

what says:
wait… are you telling me the suns would have to give up MORE than just marion to get shaq? and you are telling me the heat wouldn’t have to send any other picks or players to phoenix? if i was phoenix and i was trading marion for shaq, i would want the heat to throw their pick this year in the deal so i can draft derrick rose too.

Feb.5 at 9:32 pm

Come on now, this won’t happen.

Feb.5 at 9:34 pm

FLUXLAND says:
@Holly.. you know you typed “was pretty nice, eh?” and then went back and changed it to hey..lol.. c’mon.. you know you did!

Feb.5 at 9:44 pm

vmcb says:
This is rediculous. As a suns fan, I’m not sure how feel about this. Initially.. the feeling was bad… very very bad. Now it’ s just bad.

Feb.5 at 9:47 pm

Holly MacKenzie says:
haahha, Flux! I really didn’t but, I guess it’s pretty much the same thing isn’t it. I’m just waiting for people to analyze KObe’s sprained finger and compare it to Brons. Brace yourselves!

Feb.5 at 9:55 pm

peteb80 says:
Shaq can’t even reach mid-court in 7 seconds.

Feb.5 at 10:01 pm

Dacre says:
It’s just not going to work…. Marion is surely better suited to the PHX suns offense… What can Shaq actually offer these days? Diaw defends centres better and he switches OFF in-game. Thats a mindset the suns DON’t Need… they are looking to go to the finals…not bow out in the 1st round.

Feb.5 at 10:14 pm

503305 says:
phoenix will be out in the first round before shaq can reach halfcourt. if this deal will push through i think it is almost certain dallas will make a move. i just don’t see mark cuban sitting out this western one-upping.

Feb.5 at 10:16 pm

jbn74sb says:
If the Suns pull this move, they will be assured of getting dusted by whomever they play in the first round. Let it happen. At this point, I wouldn’t trade Brian Skinner for Shaq.

Feb.5 at 10:18 pm

RV says:
i guess they’re getting desperate, they know nash the MVP is done in a yr or two (after that he may play but not at the same level), and shaq will prob be done by then too. They prob dont want to resign Marion so might as well get something, make a run for a yr or two, and then rebuild..

Feb.5 at 10:22 pm

TADOne says:
Marion wants out anyway and Banks has been a bust of sorts in PHX. Shaq with Amare next to him and Nash feeding the ball could be a good remedy for the big fella.

Feb.5 at 10:34 pm

Dacre says:
The THING is that Shaq can’t get the ball in the basket anymore…certainly his selection of moves are halted by either strong/young centres in the league or the officials that put the whistle away when he makes a move - Sure if Marion wants to go lets look for some options…but you don’t take Shaq for Marion AND another roster player… you can get a way better deal than out there… I moved Marion on NBALive 06, it can be done properly.

Feb.5 at 10:39 pm

Dacre says:
What’s Marion thinking - He needs to just settle down. He’s playing well for the Suns, they have a great chance this year. This will be the year they get over the Spurs in the Western Conf finals and get to the NBA Finals… And Shaq can watch from home…in Florida.

Feb.5 at 10:49 pm

tike says:
WOW theres no way that trade is going down no way so just keep dreaming people

Feb.5 at 10:51 pm

Tim Dennis says:
PHX will get slower and slower with shaq and the heat will get alot with banks.if the suns get heats 1st round pick then it will be understandable

Feb.5 at 10:53 pm

503305 says:
gasol having 20 and 10 performance so far on kobe’s offnight. wow! i think if this indeed go through phoenix will need more than amare, nash and shaq to put the lakers out.

Feb.5 at 10:56 pm

Captain America says:
Banks has been a bust everywhere he’s been. The more burn he gets the more bricks he lays.

Feb.5 at 11:04 pm

Dacre says:
Wouldn’t the Heat try and restrict or have an option on the draft pick?!…Could you imagine the Suns with 1 top 3 draft pick next year?! The Heat wouldnt give that pick away…they NEED it bad.

Feb.5 at 11:04 pm

503305 says:
i think an elton brand for shawn marion straight up trade is much better. i can’t imagine phoenix doing this. they don’t want to extend marion but they are willing to take shaq and the 2 years left in his contract after this year. absurd!!!!!! they should have traded marion for picks and young stud in the offseason and retain thomas. besides thomas is a much better defender than shaq at this point.

Feb.5 at 11:23 pm

Bryant Reeves says:
absolutely absurd. I bet whoever started this ridiculous rumor is laughing his @ss off right now.

Feb.5 at 11:33 pm

503305 says:
@ Bryant Reeves i think it is more than rumor. heat apparently told shaq to get ready for possible trade. maybe heat are just generating buzz to increase shaq’s trade value. this will be bad for phoenix shaq is owed 40Mil the next 2 years and his health is a big question mark. trade marion to hawks for josh smith and some players.

Feb.5 at 11:37 pm

Bubbachuck says:
lmao @ shaq, stat, grant hill, barbosa & nash

Feb.6 at 1:27 am

tony knorr says:
marion needs to smarten the f*** up and realize that he is already playing for a contender that is led by the most unselfish pass happy point gaurd in the league what does he think that he would get more shots somewhere else. HA! good luck every other team in the L takes 123 less shots a game than the suns therefore his opportunity for shots and offensive boards goes way down.

Feb.6 at 1:39 am

ck says:
This may not look so spectacular on paper for PHX, but come playoffs, we’ll all see Shaq’s effectiveness on the D-side. He can still take 3/4 of the middle’s space and that should be enough to minimize the scoring of the other Big men of the west (Duncan, Bynum-Pau), and let Nash and Co. sprint their butts out on the offense. Just expect a less flashy PHX though…

Feb.6 at 1:42 am

RV says:
i also think Shaq may also wake the f*ck up if he gets traded to Phoenix. shaq basically quit on the Heat since last yr when he realized they were going to get it done again, and this year, after losing Posey, GP, Kapono, etc., he definitely knew they sucked. He was ready to roll over and just finish his contract, but in Phoenix he’ll see what great opportunity it is to win again and take a lot of the credit again.

Feb.6 at 2:48 am

Russ Bengtson says:
Shaq might wake up, but he won’t get any younger. This would be The Big Mistake for Phoenix in every possible sense.

Feb.6 at 2:51 am

Russ Bengtson says:
They’d get slower, their rebounding would get worse, and so would their interior defense. Watching Shaq and Amare try and stay in front of guys would be like watching Andre the Giant fight Cary Elwes in “The Princess Bride.” Gasol and Bynum would eat them alive.

Feb.6 at 4:00 am

Holly MacKenzie says:
holy shoot.. apparently a done deal.

Feb.6 at 4:02 am

Young Chris #3 says:
I don’t know. Diaw would get more minutes with Marion gone, so they’d get rebounding from him. With Shaq there taking up room, Amare might average double-digit rebounds as well. Diesel still hit 58% of his shots this year, so he’s capable of putting the ball in the basket and with Grant Hill, Diaw, Raja Bell, Barbosa, Amare and Nash, they still can play the run-n-gun game sporadically. But that team has the talent to perform in the half-court as well. Grant Hill is still nice and smart as hell…

Feb.6 at 4:23 am

joe pine says:
I think this is a great move. Marion is awesome, but pheonix was getting nowhere, in the playoffs without a presence in the middle. Amare is great, but is playing out of position. with shaq clogging the middle, amare playing his natural spot, and nash directing traffic, the suns will be the favs in the west now, for sure. well, see you in finals, boston.

Feb.6 at 4:23 am

Feb.6 at 4:24 am

Getting close to my bedtime. I’m actually a little worried about Shaq getting rejuvenated. But only a little.

Feb.6 at 4:27 am

Myles Brown says:
Why? Does this trade come with a Doc Brown and a Delorean?

Feb.6 at 4:29 am

hursty says:
hell yeh, id pull the trigger for both teams. shaq can still be more effective (with stat as a 4) while marion only competes with wade as alpha male (instead of 3 guys), this also helps miami ‘rebuild’.

Feb.6 at 4:30 am

kulas says:
20 mil for a big guy who routinely gets beat on pick and rolls, and is injured most of the time. Did phoenix just hit the panic button because of Gasol?

Feb.6 at 4:34 am

I figure better Phoenix than Dallas. Shaq might have had more impact as Dampier’s replacement.

This is the worse deal.
Ever.
OF all time. Worse than trading Dr.J, or when the warriors traded wilt, or the bucks kareem, or the sixers barkley. WOrse than anything Isaiah has EVER done. Steve Kerr is Insane with a capital I. The suns are dead to me. This hurts.

Feb.6 at 4:50 am

dj says:
Shaq (when he actually plays, once a month) CAN’T EVEN RUN PAST MIDCOURT! (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
-for further emphasis I wouldn’t trade paul shirley for Shaq at this point (esp. with that contract of his).

Feb.6 at 4:52 am

dj says:
It’s like trading in Jessica Alba for Britney Spears. Senseless, absolutely, painfully, senseless.
I can’t get over it. Oh, the humanity.

Feb.6 at 5:36 am

peteb80 says:
Marion must really be a superannoying b1tch if they’re willing to trade him for the most expensive 14 and 8 ever. Considering he’s not even playing in half of the games, that’s basically a 7 and 4. Are you sure Kerr is not just trying to scare some sense into Marion and Riley wants to harass Shaq into a buyout?

Feb.6 at 5:52 am

mat smith says:
coach d’antoni will let shaq just play the games and not wreck him in training like pat “1980″ riley, look at grant hill, he is in best shape since pistons, diaw will step up and replace marion, shaq will be a bench player just blocking up the post on defence. oh and marcus banks is in the deal too, bye marcus, thanks for nothing, suns will still be fast when shaq is on bench (barbosa) then play some half court when he is in (like against spurs)

Feb.6 at 6:12 am

SwingMan says:
Wow. I’m local here in AZ and the talking heads here say it’s a done deal - Shaq for Marion and Banks. It’s going to take a bit for the particulars to come about, but there’s talk of swapping picks in the deal as well: Us sending Atlanta’s pick to Miami, Miami sending their pick this year to PHX….. Again, wow. Can you say “Derrick Rose, Steve Nash’s understudy”? As a Suns fan, I can only hope that Shaq can throw a precise outlet pass…..

Feb.6 at 6:25 am

Slobodan Chutzpah says:
This would obviously be the most retarded trade in NBA history… right after the Gasol trade. It is not “motivation” (and why, pray tell, should this thing called motivation be constantly coaxed out of a guy making north of $2o mil per year?), it is the fact that Shaq is old and weary and not getting any younger. Steve Kerr will adopt the title of “most boneheaded NBA GM” the minute he pulls the trigger on this one.

Feb.6 at 6:33 am

RedRum says:
I think this could work actually… you don’t need 5 men to run on the fast break, 3-4 are enough. Actually most fastbreaks are run with 3, with the 4th being trailer. In half-court it could also work. Shaq still commands a double, which opens up space for the backcourt to hit open 3s. They can still run the nash-amare high-post pick n roll, with shaq opening up and coming in when helps comes for amare. I don’t see why people think this is retarded… I think the suns were most dangerous with kurt thomas as center. a motivated and happy shaq is a huge upgrade to thomas I reckon…

Feb.6 at 6:34 am

DIO says:
Now that’s major move! Shaq motivated is a hole new story, who cares bout those damn legs…
Marion too should be fine at South beach…

Feb.6 at 6:47 am

dj says:
Shaq can’t command a double team if he’s hurt. And has anybody seriously watched him play recently? ONE 30 point game in 2 seasons. The guy trips over his own feet, throws wild shots off the backboard, and is about 50 pounds overweight by any standard. I don’t care how motivated Shaq is he’s old and the wear and tear from all those playoff runs has finally gotten to him. Centers like him don’t get any younger (See: Ewing, Patrick, Seattle/Orlando)

Feb.6 at 6:51 am

bates says:
it wud be suicide for the suns
bynum n gasol wud destroy the suns, who will have a small n slow front line.
marion is actually a worthy all star(minus this year due to more impressive forwards) n shaq is a increasingly older n slower player

Feb.6 at 6:55 am

peteb80 says:
And no, the Heat won’t make the play-offs this year and they’d be dumb to even try.

Feb.6 at 8:07 am

Feb.6 at 9:42 am

mister8 says:
What makes anybody think that the suns would win it this year? I love the suns, but that style of play is just not working in the play-offs, and everybody know this.
If this will go down the Suns would slow it down some, plus you are forgetting Shaq is one of the best passing centers out there, he can find those 3-point shooters easy. Plus they wanted to get rid of Banks anyway, just like Marion. The only issue is Shaq’s health, but Phoenix has one of the better medical staff’s.

Feb.6 at 9:42 am

white hot eboy says:
This is fuc*ing with my idea of having the #1 pick. and I think it was about 2 weeks a go when I typed on this very site that Shaq qas going to be moved and I was told I’m a moron. Per usual, it is all of you that are proved to be just that. Thanks for the title Shaq and good luck in Phoenix. Tell Pau as he lays in a crippled mess under your feet that the Spanish/American war had similar results.

Feb.6 at 9:43 am

polowthaJon says:
too many big men on the baseline. there is no room for amare to do his thing, plus skinner loses playing time and shaq will injure himself by mid-march. bad trade.

Feb.6 at 9:51 am

white hot eboy says:
Just to clarify for the morons who haven’t SEEN a Heat game with Shaq in the lineup this season, the biggest problem they had was NO ONE could get him the ball. When they did he was effective. In Phoenix I’m pretty sure Nash and Hlll can feed the post for easy baskets and Shaq can find open shooters all day long, something the Heat have none of at the moment and the Suns have plenty of. This will benefit the Suns, not hurt them. And Amare will be free to work from 15 feet in instead of starting on the block every play. Their interior D will get no worse, because come on, they did really scare anyone defensivley before? Marion is a good, rangy defender, but he’s not patrolling the lane like Dwight or Zo.

Feb.6 at 9:57 am

Ryan Jones says:
eboy, even having barely seen a Heat game this season, I’m with you. Listen, dude is a shell of what he used to be, but he’s still a pretty imposing shell. He’s also clearly the kind of player who’s more motivated when his team is contending than when it’s not. Change of scenery and a legit chance to contend again will do him a WORLD of good. It won’t keep him healthy, but if he has some luck in that department, this could definitely work out for them. And it should be pretty clear to all of us by now that this Suns team was NOT going to win a damn thing. Prior to this trade, regardless of record, they might only be the fourth best team in the West.

Feb.6 at 10:02 am

TADOne says:
Question: Can Shaq actually pass a physical? I mean, with the hip problems and all it seems pretty impossible. Just saying.
