Mike Bibby Traded To Atlanta
by Russ Bengtson
There’s nothing David Stern likes more than trades during All-Star Weekend. Really.
The Sacramento Kings and Atlanta Hawks have agreed on principle (uh-oh!) to a really awful trade that will see four Hawks sent West in return for point guard Mike Bibby. Unless, of course, Tyronn Lue finds a way to block the deal. The best part of the deal for Atlanta is that they didn’t have to give up any of their top 27 players. The best part of the deal for Sacramento is, uh—you got Shelden Williams, y’all?
In related news, tonight’s All-Star PlayStation Skills Challenge will be replaced by an MMA fight between LeBron James and Danny Ferry. Also, Joe Johnson? Don’t expect any passes from LeBron on Sunday, except for ones of the baseball variety when you’re not looking.
P.S. The NBA—where getting traded from a 23-28 lottery team to a 21-28 playoff team* happens.
* The Hawks aren’t quite in the playoffs at the moment, but does anyone seriously believe they’ll finish behind the Sixers?

Bibby’s not my favourite point guard, but for the Hawks, it’s a huge upgrade.

Other than Udrih getting more time, this trade is really bad for the Kings. Lang, your Hawks are making the playoffs. Just wish it had been Artest instead of Bibby…

It’s not just about getting Bibby, who isn’t as good as he once was but is still a good pg. It’s also about dumping some guys who either didn’t get any burn (shelden and lorenzen) and a guy who, for lack of a better word, sucks (AJ has 5 bad games for every good game he plays). Tyronn Lue was decent at best (a clutch shooter), but oh well. The Hawks NEVER make trades like this. I’m very much in shock. In the watered down East, a rotation of Bibby, Joe, Marv, the two Joshes, Al Horford, and Zaza… that will get you into the playoffs. Even the worst coach in the L, Mike Woodson, can’t screw this up. What a trade!

What the hell? I thought the management was locked in some legal battle where some d-bag wouldn’t let them do anything and thats why they couldnt get better, or atleast thats what Lang told us. Lies!!!
Feb.16 at 6:40 pm
Dan says:
@ Myung: two things. First of all, you left out Marvin Williams, who is silently having a stellar season, and, despite his poor decisions over the years, there are much worse coaches in the L than Mike Woodson.

Rob Paxon says:
Great move for the Hawks. They improve now without impacting their future (at all). The latter is VERY important, considering how young their core is. Bibby isn’t the long-term franchise answer here… by the time their core players are all in their prime he won’t be such a great #1 option. However, this team is ready to compete and get some playoff experience NOW. With Bibby they have a great shot at the playoffs THIS year. They can continue to improve as a team young team under a proven player (who is clearly on the downswing of his career) while looking for/grooming their PG of the future. And to repeat, they’re able to do this without giving up any of their future. Sheldon Williams is the only guy who is even close to young in the deal, along with a second round pick. Great, great move with all things considered. Hawks fans must be thrilled to finally have their PG, even if its just for the short-mid term.

Rob Paxon says:
“Ron Artest just committed homicide. ” If anything, this kind of salary dumping bodes well for (openness to) an Artest move. What doesn’t bode well is that they’ve apparently been trying to move him for weeks with no success and time is very short. So yeah, if he’s still there after the deadline, his situation just got a bit worse. But his team already sucked and he’d only be there for a handful of weeks, anyhow. Then he opts out and goes somewhere else (think “open to crazy”; think “New York”). Or he doesn’t opt out for the salary purposes of an offseason trade. No matter how you slice it his time there is pretty much over, unless he really does want to be there in spite of this. So I wouldn’t worry about Ron Ron (unless I was an attending fan nyuck nyuck).

Myung says:
to all of you who think there are worse coaches than mike woodson… i’d have to respectfully disagree. i mean, i’ve watched nearly every hawks game for the past 15+ years. i DO think terry stotts was THE worst head coach i’ve ever seen, but among CURRENT head coaches, i can’t think of a worse one than woodson. i agree that mike brown isn’t very good (i can name a few more, most of whom coach in the east), but i still contend that mike woodson is THE worst coach, or at least game manager, in the league.
Feb.16 at 7:17 pm
Myung says:
i STILL can’t believe we made this trade. i’m in utter disbelief that billy knight actually did the right thing (especially letting go of shelden after just 1.5 seasons, basically owning up to the fact that he was a HUGE mistake of a draft pick).

Rob Paxon says:
Russ: No doubting that. His #5 selection was the classic case of being suckered by a college resume. He was a true stud at Duke — a man among boys. The same thing that made him great in college makes him not so great in the NBA: he matured and tapped his potential quicker than his peers… fully matured and fully tapped his potential (or mostly, for the sake of argument). Taken in the second or even late first, he could have been a value pick as he may yet end up being a good roleplayer for a long time. Where he WAS picked he’s going to end up being a total bust and it isn’t even his fault: he had no business being picked there. The next three picks after him? Roy, Foye, and Gay. Sefolosha and Ronnie Brewer a few more down. Hell, Balkman was taken 15 spots later and you can’t tell me you wouldn’t rather have him.

I gotta cosign Myung’s thoughts on Mike Woodson, he is horrible. If they had a coach that actually committed to running the Hawks would comfortably be a 5 or 6 seed already. Great trade. Bibby ain’t staying around past next year though, ain’t no way the Hawks extend that insane contract when they gotta pay the young’uns in the next few years. He’s keeping the seat warm until Acie Law is ready.

Feb.17 at 2:35 pm
Russ Bengtson says:
It’s weird that all these non-destination teams (Sacramento, Memphis) are freeing up cap space like it’s going to make a difference. You need that one talent to attract other talent–would anyone think about signing with Cleveland if it weren’t for LeBron? The best they can hope for is to overpay for a marginal All-Star just to make themselves (and perhaps their fan base) feel better. Prove me wrong, fellas.

YES YES YES YES YES YES YES!!!!!!!!!!!! EXACTLY WHAT WE NEEDED, WE WILL BE TAKING THE STEP FORWARD THIS SEASON THAT WE LOOKED SO CLOSE TO TAKING BEFORE CRUMBLING FOR A MONTH BECAUSE WE LACKED A POINTGUARD!!!!!!!! Mike Bibby is COLDBLOODED. He is great at pushing and controlling the tempo, he gives us a veteran leader that knows how to win and has competed at the highest level……. he is the one thing we desperately needed: A VERY GOOD POINTGUARD! Another thing we really needed that he gives us is VERY GOOD PERIMETER SHOOTING, and another option in the clutch besides JJ. He will make his teammates better, take alot of pressure off of Joe Johnson, give us another playmaker, a pointguard that Woody will trust, an efficient floor general that does a good job running the offense…. and he can mentor Acie (Same type of PG in college that Bibby’s been in pro’s) if Acie is capable (Which I think he will be, but admit remains to be seen)…. THIS IS PERFECT! EXACTLY WHAT WE NEEDED, THE ONE THING WE REALLY REALLY NEEDED! AND WE DIDNT GIVE UP ANY OF OUR 6 BEST PLAYERS!!!! THIS IS AWESOME!!!!!! Bibby-Johnosn-Williams-Smith-Horford with Chillz as 6th man and Zaza at the 5 off the bench and Law as backup pg……. WOW THESE HAWKS ARE GONNA BE EVEN MORE FUN TO WATCH!!!!!! THIS IS GONNA BE REAL GOOD!!!!! WHAT A GREAT DAY!!!

you know what man, this has been a GREAT season and allstar weekend, great trades made, teams getting better, 10 very good teams in the west, 6 very god teams in the East (Washingotn included with Butler back, theyre 24-13 with him after the 0-4 start….. espeically with Gilbert back on top of that)….. maybe 7 now that Atlanta got their pointguard in Bibby…. maybe even 8 if NJ or Chicago can turn it around (NJ got better if the trade goes down, great trade for dallas and kidd too…… dont know why Chicago hasnt traded for Randolph) and become like theyve been over the past two years (NJ won 50 games in 06, Chicago won 50 last year in 07)….. But yeah, anyways…… great weekend for the NBA at allstar weekend, great talent, we shoudl be proud as fans…. and its been a GREAT season, great trades (Seriously, in 1 year we’ve seen Iverson, Ray Allen, KG, Shawn Marion, Shaq, Randolph, JRich, Rashard Lewis, Jason Kidd, Mike Bibby, Pau Gasol and Devin Harris all get traded!!!!), and should be a GREAT GREAT Playoffs and ESPECIALLY GREAT NBA FINALS when Boston or Detroit take on whatever power makes it from the West, that will be a WAR!!!!! AWESOME STUFF!

Steve says:
Hawks got a great deal, they got their missing piece in a very good pointguard that can push and control the tempo, is extremely clutch, takes pressure off of Joe Johnson as a playmaker and scorer, good running the pick and roll (Marvin Williams will be murder on pick and pop with Bibby or JJ, good on the roll too as an athletic finisher at 6′9, Al Horford will be murder on pick and roll against opposing centers or pf’s, and Josh Smith will just be a DUNKATHON finishing on that pick and roll, like Amare times 10 except an inch shorter, 20 pounds lighter and even more athletic…. that will be crazy with JJ running it or espeically Bibby), Bibby runs the offense efficiently, smart PG, dont turn it over much, great perimeter shooter, and veteran leader that knows how to win and compete at the highest level……………………………………………… Great move for the super-talented Hawks, they were already close but were missing that piece. Now they got it so they should take the step forward that they looked close to taking in their 15-12 start to the season, theyre very talented and lost NONE of their core of great young talent. All the youngsters are still getting better and Bibby will make them better, and JJ will be better too (He’s a great young player heading into his prime a year or 2 from now)…………………………….. A lineup of Bibby-Joe Johnson-Marvin-J Smoove-Horford with 6th man Childress and Zaza as the 3rd big and Acie as the backup PG with Salim and Solo in reserve as the big and the sharpshooter………….. that is a good rotation and should vault them to the Toronto/Cleveland/Washington/Orlando level, and they still have a VERY VERY bright future……………………………………………….. it is just a great move. The other piece they needed was an inside force and they got that in Horford last draft, very good rebounding, defending, and scoring in the post and getting better. Awesome move for the Hawks, seriously great move. THE HAWKS WILL BE EVEN MORE FUN TO WATCH AND SHOULD BE VERY GOOD NOW THAT THEY GOT THEIR MISSING LINK, that is awesome. Good for them, they have an even brighter future in years to come too. VERY BRIGHT FUTURE, and a GREAT MOVE for them getting exactly what they need at a very good point guard sharpshooter with experience that knows how to win and didnt give up any of their great young talent…… good team rest of this year. Great future. GREAT TRADE.

Hawks really upgraded here, finally getting a legit pg. Although I would have liked to see them get more of a distributing point like Andre Miller. Bibby might have fit better in Cleveland, catching and shooting off all of Bron’s drives.
