It’s Unofficial: Jason Kidd is Still a Net!

by Russ Bengtson

Sources tell me that ESPN.com’s Marc Stein has been clocking some serious phone time today.

Who would have thought Devean George would have a no-trade clause? Should make Jason Kidd’s reunion with his teammates uncomfortable (the Kidd-less Nets got stomped by the Raptors in Toronto tonight) if the two teams can’t find another way to make this deal work.

UPDATE: Straight from the Devean’s mouth.

Billy King says:
This is the most productive thing George has done since joining the Mavs.

Feb.13 at 10:47 pm

Gerard Himself says:
Who knew? Devean George actually picked up something from Kobe during his Lakers years.

Feb.13 at 10:50 pm

mutoni says:
devean george, ladies and germs.

Feb.13 at 10:51 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
I guess they could give Keith Van Horn a $2.3 million deal and trade that, but I’m not sure what kind of cap/roster implications that would ensue. Mark Cuban must want to kill Devean George right now.

Feb.13 at 10:51 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
My first sentence made no sense. Get rid of the second “that.”

Feb.13 at 10:53 pm

JpT says:
how bout getting the deal done and bench george for around 160 games for being a kill joy?

Feb.13 at 10:54 pm

Gerard Himself says:
if Keith Van Horn would become a Net again, for some reason that would be funny. I know, he would be just sitting on his couch in where ever the dude lives, but still. Next up: Jayson Williams, Kerry Kittles and Lucious Harris.

Feb.13 at 10:58 pm

JpT says:
@gerard, where the hell is kittles and harris btw?

Feb.13 at 10:59 pm

JohnnyRebel says:
I SAY WE BLOW GREORGE’S BRAINS OUT. KILL HIM NOW!!! HE’S WORTHLESSNESS HAS NO RIGHT TO STOP KIDD’S ARRIVAL.

Feb.13 at 11:02 pm

sean says:
*pops head in door*..kittles is workin on the nets staff or was up until fairly recently as a scout or something..*exits*

Feb.13 at 11:04 pm

Gerard Himself says:
JpT: Kittles was a special assistant last season, or so I thought. Not sure if it was with the Clippers or Nets. Harris was out after the ‘04-’05 season (his last, with the Cavs) due to back problems.

Feb.13 at 11:05 pm

mutoni says:
can devean win executive of the year for having seemingly saved mark cuban from himself? i’m not even sure if that’s a joke.

Feb.13 at 11:05 pm

Gerard Himself says:
ah okay, thanks Sean. Keep on playing like you do. Dunking, swatting shots….

Feb.13 at 11:06 pm

Gerard Himself says:
And also: Kittles is “trying to complete an MBA”
Next up: Johnny Newman is also traded back to the Nets!

Feb.13 at 11:14 pm

JpT says:
@gerard, sean : thanks! heat could use some kittles.

Feb.13 at 11:19 pm

gii says:
devean freakin george shutting it down!

Feb.13 at 11:19 pm

gii says:
the nba : where devean george happens

Feb.13 at 11:20 pm

Gerard Himself says:
And Kittles could use a healthy back and knee, oh well.
In other news: Devean George is a starter is the Dallas game, and is 0 for 7 as we speak.

Feb.13 at 11:22 pm

Gerard Himself says:
is=in, pardon me. As a Nets fan, this past hour has been an emotional rollercoaster (cliché), so that’s why I’m posting as a mad man. However, it’s almost 4:30 here, so time to go to bed, I guess. I wonder what will happen in the next couple of hours. Trade? No trade? Soap opera? The return of Sherman Douglas?

Feb.13 at 11:23 pm

RV says:
does George really want to be known as THAT guy, who cost the mavs a ring (not that i believe it, but you know its gonna be said), i think cuban will have him “dealt with”..

Feb.13 at 11:26 pm

thesubwayconnection says:
YES! That trade was terrible. Devean, I love you.

Feb.13 at 11:26 pm

Gerard Himself says:
even if the trade does go through, but with someone else instead of George, his life will be a lot of fun in Dallas. He said he wanted to be traded a couple of days ago, so he gets traded to the Nets, and then says “no”. Right.

Feb.13 at 11:27 pm

Reggie Evans says:
Devean will find a horse head in his bed tomorrow morning …

Feb.13 at 11:28 pm

EcC says:
Who would have thought that devean george is after all still a laker!

Feb.13 at 11:29 pm

gii says:
the popovitch commission has rejected the kidd trade.

Feb.13 at 11:29 pm

Gerard Himself says:
Reg: that would be funny, since that is also the Mavericks logo.

Feb.13 at 11:38 pm

hursty says:
wtf…this is horse sh!t for both teams. better for the mavs though.`

Feb.13 at 11:40 pm

tealish says:
uhhhh…………. so how does something like this get missed? I don’t understand.

Feb.13 at 11:46 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Mark Cuban may hate Devean George right now, but Avery probably loves him. Watch him start every game for the rest of the year.

Feb.13 at 11:47 pm

Gerard Himself says:
Well Russ, he started tonight vs the Blazers, and is 0 for 11 so far. You might be right.

Feb.13 at 11:50 pm

Gerard Himself says:
and I need to say this (delete this post if you want): but damn, Grant Hill is putting up 20 and 10 far against the Warriors (in the first 3 quarters)

Feb.13 at 11:54 pm

MIC_SO.C213 says:
The only thing he brought to the LakeShow was D….i guess he’s still has it to make a stop

Feb.13 at 11:55 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Grant also had a layup blocked by Austin Croshere. If Devean misses all his shots tonight, he may find it in his best interest to void that no-trade clause and get the hell out of Dodge. Dallas. Wherever.

Feb.14 at 12:05 am

Gerard Himself says:
Wow, Croshere finally got some minutes? I always liked him, but the last time I saw Austin Croshere play well was during the Finals of 2000.

Feb.14 at 12:52 am

Fredo says:
Number of people who knew Devean George had a no-trade clause: 0 (including Mark Cuban).

Feb.14 at 12:57 am

Dacre says:
THE NBA..’WHERE DEVEAN GEORGE HAPPENS’.

Feb.14 at 12:58 am

Co Co says:
I don’t know if anyone has mentioned this, but I heard on tv tonight that every player who signs a one year deal can’t be traded without his consent.

Feb.14 at 1:07 am

Russ Bengtson says:
Some Bird Rights nonsense. Like Devean George really needs to worry that some team’s gonna short-change him on his next contract. He’ll be lucky to get the midlevel somewhere.

Feb.14 at 1:07 am

phil says:
As a Mavs fan, I can only pray that this deal falls apart. I don’t want to wake up in a world where Devin Harris isn’t a Maverick.

Feb.14 at 1:11 am

Co Co says:
Who do the Mavericks have left if this trade goes through? Do they even have a starting five?

Feb.14 at 1:22 am

Russ Bengtson says:
Updated with Devean’s postgame interview.

Feb.14 at 1:33 am

Dacre says:
CO CO…they still have a starting five: dirk, josh howard, avery johnson, adrian dantley and mark cuban.

Feb.14 at 1:38 am

Glen says:
Leave it to the Follower to f*ck this up…

Feb.14 at 1:39 am

Russ Bengtson says:
Dirk, Damp, Howard, Kidd, Terry.

Feb.14 at 1:41 am

Dacre says:
I think the Devean was on point with that comment though…that a player can stand up for their rights WITHIN their contract arrangement and it has the chance of making him look like the bad guy…He should put his foot down - he’s entitled too. Mavs are stone crazy wanting to get rid of him anyway…he’s still talking about “our team” and the family approach the teammates have….he’s a sure keeper.

Feb.14 at 1:54 am

Jimmy G says:
No the Mavs aren’t crazy for trading Devean. He has been the same since the injury late last season. I dont know what happened to Devean, because prior to that injury he seemed to be a Dallas version of Bruce Bowen. To be honest I dont know if the trade was a good idea in the first place. The teams Devin Harris plays great aganist are, the Suns, Lakers and Spurs. He was never the problem, the problem is the Mavs rely too much on damn jumpers, have no inside game, and lack wing defense.

Feb.14 at 1:59 am

Jake Appleman says:
Love the use of the “word” jovialness in the video.

Feb.14 at 2:24 am

tealish says:
I am fed up with the phrase, “it is what it is”. He must have used it, what, 5 times in that 4 min interview? It’s an overused cop out that needs to delegalized. Come on, Devean, just go right out and say it… it’s a b*tch to play in Jersey. With that said, there’s really nothing much that can be said about this situation. It’s unfortunate for the Mavs, the Nets, and Devean George… but I guess it is what it is…

Feb.14 at 3:00 am

RV says:
the biggest loser in all of this? Stack, he doesn’t get a buyout + a new contract with Dallas if the trade doesn’t go through

Feb.14 at 3:31 am

albie1kenobi says:
this reminds me of that one time AI was almost traded to detroit for hamilton and change, only to have matt geiger exercising his no-trade clause too.

Feb.14 at 4:09 am

Tariq says:
tealish: When was the last time Devean George actually “played” anywhere?

Feb.14 at 4:25 am

GGG says:
Ouch…George with an uppercut! The Nets needs this trade to start re-building…before Cuban changes his mind…

Feb.14 at 5:57 am

Jukai says:
George… assigned to the D-League!!

Feb.14 at 7:26 am

speedy says:
This trade will happen . Deavan George just wants some extra money .

Feb.14 at 7:55 am

räuber hotzenplotz says:
hopefully not, the mavs would have even bigger matchup problems with lakers, spurs, suns…(+warriors) in the western conference. the mavs need kid and a center.

Feb.14 at 9:02 am

Ill WIll says:
Huge block by Devean.

Feb.14 at 9:03 am

Gerard Himself says:
Russ: besides George, I understood that it’s also not accepted under NBA rules that Stack will be bought out immediately, so he can sign with the Mavs again after 30 days. Stack, the moron, shouldn’t have said that publicly, to begin with. Any info on that?

The NBA must be most entertaining league in the universe, this is pure comedy folks, Devean F.George?

Feb.14 at 9:58 am

MC Tyg says:
just a question, probably not the best place to ask that but with the trade of Kidd (if it does happen before the week-end) what exactly is the East all star team going to look like?

Meet Devean George: The GM.

If I was in charge Devean George wouldn’t see another minute of play the rest of the year.

@MC Tyg:there gonna throw sum guys from the d league in if it goes down… its not impossible!

Feb.14 at 11:32 am

Theres no way Devean George can stop this deal from going through…wow..This is probably good for Dallas but who would have thought DEVEAN GEORGE………

Feb.14 at 2:07 pm

Khalid Salaam says:
Devean george is the man. He musta been like, wait nobody asked me if i wanted to go to jersey. he’s taking care of his. let that man live

Feb.14 at 4:30 pm

Timmyd says:
LOL @ Slam…”it’s offical…its Unofficial”! Yeah, this is a mess. I have to say that I think Dallas would be giving up entirely too much for J-Kidd. I understand that they have to make the salaries match, but damn. And even with him I still don’t think Dallas will win the West which they would have to do in order for this deal to not be a major flop. So this might be a good thing that Devean George is blocking this deal right now. This sort of reminds me of when Philly was trying to trade Iverson in 2000 to Detroit and a sixers player didn’t want to overturn his trade kicker, that got in the way of the trade and AI wasn’t traded as a result. He went on to become the leagues MVP the next year and lead the Sixers to the finals. I’m not saying that Deven Harris is Iverson, not by a long shot, but the kid has mad potential and I think its a mistake for Dallas to give him up, he’s like 10 yrs younger then J-Kidd. Lets see how this plays out…

Feb.14 at 4:43 pm

Darksaber says:
Impressive Devean, the patented KB24 “no trade clause”. I for one do not mind this development one bit. Good luck feeling wanted back in Jersey Ason, that’s gotta suck. So, anyone told Bron Bron yet?

Feb.14 at 4:48 pm

Darksaber says:
And Russ, the General already rewarded Devean for his “right to void” yesterday by STARTING him against the Blazers. Good call man. Please lord, let the Mavericks players use this as extra motivation to show Cubes what’s what. What a MESS!

Feb.14 at 5:43 pm

Jake says:
The Mavs should be thanking Devean(even if he was 0 for 11), but I hate it because if it doesn’t go through Devin Harris will give TP trouble
