It’s for Real This Time: Jason Kidd Is a Maverick

by Marcel Mutoni

Our long national nightmare is over: Jason Kidd has finally been traded to the Mavericks.

Thirteen years after winning the co-rookie of the year (he shared the award with Grant Hill), Kidd makes his return to Dallas.

There really isn’t a whole lot to add here - I think it’s fair to say that we’ve beaten the news into the ground enough.

Jason’s first game with his new team could be as soon as tomorrow night in New Orleans, where he’d be going up against point guard extraordinaire Chris Paul. Yeesh. Welcome back to the West, Kidd.

do you think he’ll pass to Devean?

Feb.19 at 3:19 pm

rob stewart says:
I think to much drama has went down for the Mavs to win a chip. This entire mess has brought on questioning of Dirk, Avery, Kidd, Stackhouse, Goerge, Cuban, etc. I just think this whole process has somehow damaged chemistry and loyalty. Just a huge mess

Feb.19 at 3:20 pm

Hot Pubes says:
Man, I bet Trenton Hassell is pissed at Devean George.. making him get added to package! No Xmas cards from Trenton this year!

Feb.19 at 3:21 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Also, the Nets had better retire Kidd’s No. 5. I suppose they can wait until he retires to do that. Or they should give it to Keith Van Horn.

Feb.19 at 3:23 pm

alex eaton says:
the nets are going to be really bad now

Feb.19 at 3:29 pm

@ alex eaton: as opposed to what they are now?

Feb.19 at 4:21 pm

Jukai says:
This makes the Mavericks a stronger regular season team and a weaker playoff team. JUST what the Mavs needed.

Feb.19 at 4:33 pm

The Best Yet says:
If I see Kidd in another headline within the next 72hrs….i dunno. Enough though.

Feb.19 at 4:33 pm

Cub Buenning says:
TAD, you gotta handicap this game like a “pick’em” NFL game…. hometeam.
Memphis is my pick.

Feb.19 at 4:54 pm

TADOne says:
But Cub, you do realize Memphis is IN Tennessee, so there will be plenty of UT fans there as well. Either way, should be a great game.

Feb.19 at 4:58 pm

lockedc says:
who will guard tony parker,bdiddy,cp3,tim duncan in a playoff series????dumb trade.diop and harris aren“t the best shooter but they can play D

Feb.19 at 5:15 pm

Shift says:
Hey all sorry i tried other links but none would work so i hope im not way out of order. Now for my main thoughts about this trade between Dallas and new jersey. 1. Isn’t kind of idiotic to exchange your young “rising” one for a super elite guard, who may or may not have more than 1-2 years left. 2. Shaq deal was an idiotic trade in some ways, but at least shaq has proven himself, and not just going to the finals but also REALLY winning 4 championchips. There is a huge difference, wouldnt you agree?
With Shaq the Suns “can” win, but with Kidd i wouldn’t trade unless, he, like Shaq, can guarantee to win at least one championchip. Why otherwise put him there? 2.1 Lebron james, j-kidd have not won any championchips. While even T-parker would be more of a winner than j-kidd really, now wouldnt he!? remember when he was battling for his job against J-kidd. (a fun thought would be who would you have on your team when the playoff comes? Ask duncan, it would be very interesting) “Even” Billups is more of winner than j-kidd in that area wouldn’t you say so. 3. Right now all media say you are looking for mental toughness, no collapse!? Steve Nash does not have mental toughness!? 4. Steve Nash has been mvp 2 times since leaving dallas,,, J.kidd has how been mvp how many times? Thats right. So how does that translate. Maybe keeping Steve Nash would have been a better idea. And even a cheaper(I dont check the payrolls!?) since they are looking for an elite guard with mental toughness. Which nash has. And even though he is a different type of guard, does one or the other translate into more of a championchip? 5. How can they make the assumption that steve nash was too much of a risk because he was too “old” and suddenly J.kidd is worth the risk!? I dont see the logic. Thank you for reading my thoughts. Hope they bring some different angles to this story. p.s. Slam you i really need to have a new cool job, hook me up? lol Arash /Sweden

Jukai says:
They sure did great when Davis dropped thirty a night on them.

Feb.19 at 5:23 pm

B. Long says:
Has Mark Cuban been playing golf with Isiah or something?

Feb.19 at 5:39 pm

phunkykarma says:
Let’s hope Steve Nash won’t get jealous of the kidd-dirk relationship

Feb.19 at 6:04 pm

Gerard Himself says:
IF Vince is traded, it better not be for Jermaine O’Neal. Two reasons: Jermaine hasn’t been healthy for two seasons, and if the Nets add him, they have more forwards / centers than the Warriors have guards.

Feb.19 at 6:22 pm

jeremy says:
Now,the Mavs are the 2nd best team right behind Phoenix. They will meet in the Western conference finals, and it will probably go to 7 games, and I predict Phoenix takes game 7 and plays either Detroit or Boston in the finals.Im just not sold on LA.After the Gasol trade, everybody jumped on the bandwagon and declared they were gonna win it all.Not so fast yall.thet still aint proved nothing yet.Lets see if they can get by San Antonio or Utah before we start talking about finals.I just dont buy em yet.

Feb.19 at 6:28 pm

J-Bird says:
I dont buy the Laker hype either, lets wait ’til the playoffs.

Feb.19 at 6:39 pm

John E. Sanford says:
This is a stupid trade for the Mavs. Chris Paul’s demolition of Jason Kidd tomorrow night will be a preview of the rest of the season for the Mavs.

Feb.19 at 7:02 pm

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
Hahahaah Kevin Wilson - I have that CD, completely forgot about it.. Kidd’s track is about as bad as his shooting or TJ’s mustache.. My man GP’s track is nice though..

Feb.19 at 7:12 pm

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
You guys focus too much on Paul driving by Kidd, it was a All-Star game for criss sake - Nobody plays D..
Kidd might be a worse shooter/defender than Harris. But he’s also one of the best leaders in the L, a proven winner and has balls big enough to stand up to Bdiddy, Parker or whoever (and big enough to produce that abnormal manchild). Kidd bring intangibles the Mavs are definetly better.

Feb.19 at 7:15 pm

Jukai says:
Right, intangibles like rebounding and passing.

Feb.19 at 7:19 pm

nick says:
Breaking news: Keith Van Horn failed his physical. Kidd remains a Net.

Feb.19 at 7:21 pm

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
Leadership, size, spacing, clutchness, teamwork. Let Terry guard the other PG’s if they blow past him. He’s big enough to match-up with most shooting guards.

Feb.19 at 7:22 pm

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
Nick you gots to be kidding.. Right.. Say your kidding man..

Feb.19 at 7:49 pm

matt the jazz fan says:
a valid point i read somewhere is that the kidd legend only started when he left the wset for the (l)east… at least as far as playoff success is concerned.
bad trade for the mavs.
with phoenix overreacting, kobe’s pinkie and dallas over-overreacting, and (dare i say it) san antonio displaying its age, are we looking at a utah / hornets semi final?

Feb.19 at 8:54 pm

J-Bird says:
No, Jazz fan, were not.

Feb.19 at 10:12 pm

Timmyd says:
I still don’t think this will push the Mavs over the top but whatever. I feel like they are making a big risk with this trade. Hopefully it will work out for them, but I feel like they gave up too much depth to get Kidd. And unless he is going to help Dirk out with his “softness” factor, this trade out West will be irrelevent.

Feb.19 at 10:37 pm

Dacre says:
Did anyone else see how JKidd was ridding him during the skills challenge at the A-Star weekend? And how Dwade is a down right punk!??!

Feb.19 at 10:42 pm

Dacre says:
WHAT I MEANT TO SAY WAS…. Did anyone see how JKidd’s SON was riding him during the skills challange??! Yes.
alot better.

Feb.19 at 10:43 pm

Dacre says:
I feel they’ve pulled a sweet move. THe three players they get are all productive.

Feb.20 at 2:54 am

Shannon Booher says:
Vince Carter and Keith Van Horn at the same time? Oh the marketing possibilities… The Tissue Twins!

Finally playing time for Eric Dampier.

Feb.20 at 1:31 pm

Darksaber says:
cursesssss!!!!

Feb.20 at 1:43 pm

Darksaber says:
Well, in terms of damage control, i’m happy the didn’t lose Stack. Desagana leaving still hurts though. Damp, time to play like your contract season in G-State, when you averaged like 13 rebouns man, earn that dough.

Feb.20 at 2:10 pm

mathers says:
“Jason Kidd comes around once every 30 years,” said coach Lawrence Frank. “The numbers have a way of working themselves out.” not too sure what that means…

Feb.20 at 2:23 pm

SAKEPASSE says:
John Schuhmann said it best capturing the Nets feeling this past season:
“Over the last year, having Kidd on your team has been a little like dating the best looking girl in school. When she’s focused on you, life is great. But all the other guys in school always have their eyes on her and she doesn’t hesitate to flirt right back.”
