Exploring the LeBron-Jay-Z Relationship

Should the Cavs be worried? They probably should, but it’s not like there’s a whole lot they can do about it.

They should trade Jay-Z for Usher, Damon Jones, 2 first round picks and some cash.

cant adrian be more creative and explore a lebron-ryan jones relationship. now that would be a more enticing read.

Ryan Jones says:
It’s all valid. My only possible beef is the implication that LeBron wouldn’t be interested in going to the Nets in a couple years — when they’re playing in the League’s dopest new arena in a borough that berthed many of the greatest MCs in hip-hop history, and happens to be in the heart of the biggest media market on the planet — even if he didn’t know Jay. Assuming the Cavs still haven’t figured out how to win a title by then, and assuming the Nets have a lot of cap space and can not only afford LeBron but the sort of help that Cleveland hasn’t yet been able to give him, he’d be crazy not to consider it.
That said, maybe they will win a chip in the next couple years, or maybe the Nets will still be a mess. Or maybe LeBron will go to the Knicks. He’s not gonna go the BK solely because of the Jay connection. That would be a dumb move both business and basketball wise, and LeBron tends not to make those.
Anyway, worth remembering here how promised NBA relocations often don’t work out. Remember how Kobe was definitely gonna be a Clipper? And remember how amazing the Magic were when they got Duncan and T-Mac together…

Kinda figured Jones would chime in on this. But if LeBron decides to leave, I’m quite sure Ryan may break the news himself.

Maybe I missed it in the story, but isn’t Jay-Z very much a minority owner? How much input does/will he have over the Nets? He’s also a hugely-overrated rapper, had to throw that in

I don’t have any doubts at all that LeBron will be going to New York. If he signs with the Nets when they move he can pretty much be the franchise like nobody else before him. It will be a gigantic hypefest, bigger than Shaq going to Miami. Cash money for everyone involved. I can only imagine him staying in Cleveland if the Cavs are a sure contender and the Nets are not and LeBron has not won a championship until then. But even then being the “global icon” may be more important to him than a championship.

1. I love that Sonny Vaccaro calls Jay-Z a “kid”. Then again, Sonny probably calls Robert Horry a kid.
2. The Nets are supposed to move to Brooklyn in 2011. That was originally 2008. Would it surprise anyone if it would up being 2015?
3. I don’t understand whu LeBron would have to move to a major market to be a “global icon” (my least-favorite phrase in the English language, BTW). This isn’t the 1950s, is it? I mean, gosh, it sure would be nice if that LeBron fella got the endorsement opportunities and publicity that them big-city types got. He’d be somethin’ else!

A billion dollars is an awful lot of money. Given the relatively low salaries throughout MJ’s early years and his, um, spending tendencies, I highly doubt he’s worth even close to a billion.

my thought is that LeBron still aiming for the bigger market, whether the Cavs win or not.
Just like Kobe with the Lakers.
James will be booed on his hometown just like Kobe in the Philly.

Joey E. says:
and Nike has a thing in his contract that says he gets more money if he goes to NY or LA.
Remember Bron saying he wants to be a global icon like Ali, and one of the richest men in the world. The question isn’t if he’s going, bur to which team: Knicks or Nets?

ha ha ha reggie. LeBron should get his kids ballin as soon as possible, then father and son can play together at the same time and wait for it… DIFFERENT TEAMS!! omg! wtf! im insane in the membrane lol!

Feb.26 at 7:44 am

Russ Bengtson says:
Has anyone proven that LeBron has that clause in his Nike deal? And if so, how much more money would they give him? Double? I just don’t get it. In the world of the internet and cable TV, why does it matter where he plays? Could LeBron really be MORE famous? Isn’t he overexposed already? If he dumps Cleveland for New York or Brooklyn (if the Nets ever move) strictly for the money, doesn’t he risk losing fans instead of gaining them? I don’t like any of this, to be perfectly honest.

Nets/Bucks Trade Makes Lebron a Lock To The Nets? « The Sport Count says:
[…] Aside from the much reported friendship (see Slam Online for a great run down) and mutual respect between the Two Kings, a move like this actually puts the Nets as the top big market team to attract free agent talent in the much coveted 2010/2011 off season, when your Wade’s, Bosh’s and Lebron’s enter the land of the unrestricted.
