Donald Sterling Might Not Liberate Sam Cassell
So much for Sam I Am’s escape from the basketball hell that is commonly referred to as the Los Angeles Clippers.
Boston is considered the front-runner to acquire the veteran point guard, but word on the street is that the owner of the Clippers, the notoriously stingy Donald Sterling, could throw a monkey wrench into the whole operation.
An NBA source said yesterday that Clippers owner Donald Sterling does not seem interested in buying out the final year of guard Sam Cassell’s contract. Cassell’s agent, David Falk, has given the Clippers a deadline of Saturday to complete the buyout so the 6-foot-3-inch, two-time NBA champion would be eligible for another team’s postseason roster.
You know, for a 38-year old point guard, this is turning into quite a bit of hand-wringing.
Let him go, Sterling. We, the fans, demand the giant testicle dance come Playoff time.

I wouldn’t be willing to pay him for nothing, either. If he really wants to play for a contender he could accept a 1$ buyout. What’s the problem?

Is that what that is, a dance? I thought it was his bowling technique.

I completely agree with the Donald. Its time someone stands up to these agents and players who want to be bought out. Look what happened to Toronto with Zo, it’s a joke. If you want to play for a contender, walk away from your current contract. Why should a team pay their own players to leave and have a chance somewhere else?!?

@ Steve: Certainly. As much as I want to see that M&M eating alien on the Celtics, it’s bogus to assume he can just demand to stop playing for his team, a team, I recall, that Donald Sterling FINALLY shelled out some money for and has sh@t the bed since. I ain’t defending Donald Sterling, I promise, but Sam isn’t entitled to a buyout.

Don’t buy the hype. This is all posturing. This is about money with two sides negotiating for a favorable buyout.

cosign,b/c as much as getting traded can suck, and maybe if you’re not actually in a team’s plans you can work something out, nobody is owed a buyout ever, but especially not when you sign the deal,Sam

Lock guys like Sam and Antoine down. Why do their owners have to pay them so they can leave? If they really want out, why don’t they just walk away from their contract.

yea, i gotta say i’m not feelin all these stupid ask-for-a-buyout-and-resign-with-a-contender moves. occasionally a buyout makes sense, but half of these DON’T make sense to the original team at all.. its jus doing these vets a favour, and i don’t think anything calls for that unless these players have played on the original squad for 10+ years and actually deserve a chance to leave and play for a contender. Toine? definitely doesn’t deserve f*ck all. Cassell? maybe, but please - don’t act like the team owes it to you.

So Sammy demanded and got a decent deal from the Clips. Then Brand & Livingston got hurt and the team went south. Now Sam wants out? I’m a C’s fan & I think Cassell might help them out, but this kind of public whining is just childish. Sam can walk away from the deal if he REALLY doesn’t want to be there. You don’t like your job? Quit!
Saying you don’t like your job, telling people about it AND expecting your current employer to give you a fat severance is unheard of in the real world. In the NBA it’s almost acceptable…
