Who’s the Best: LeBron or Kobe?

by Marcel Mutoni

Whenever these two guys meet, especially in a nationally televised game, it’s the question fans must answer: Who’s the greatest player in the game?

Up to this point, Kobe Bryant is considered top dog, but LeBron is making it awful tough for Bryant to retain that title.

Yesterday, ‘Bron’s Cavs beat Kobe’s Lakers for the fifth straight time, and despite having previously admitted that he lacks his rival’s killer instinct, it was James who hit the deadly shots in the game’s closing moments.

All NBA stars want to win, but with James and Bryant, it surely seems personal. It was in this one, as they each tried to one-up each other as the game came down to the wire. Bryant had a great performance, scoring 33 points with 12 rebounds, and he nearly led his team to a nice victory. But James was just better, and that’s becoming a refrain in their head-to-head matchups.

In my (admittedly biased) opinion, Bryant remains the game’s best player. His ability to exert his will on both ends of the floor is what separates him from the other superstars in this here Assocation.

LeBron, though, is making it harder and harder to believe what I just wrote.

I was at the Wolves game, again, so maybe I missed something. Did this m*therf*cker win a championship yesterday?

Jan.28 at 1:09 pm

white hot eboy says:
Myles sounds strangely similar to me in that last portion of that comment, except I’m told by Russ that championships don’t mean sh*t in player comparisons so now I’m confused. I like Bron’s 5 year potential better than Kobe’s, and co-sign Mutoni on the last paragraph in the piece. The kid is making it hard to argue the present day, too.

good for Bron.

Jan.28 at 1:17 pm

G Diesel says:
The Lakers would have won that game if it wasn’t for that useless stiff Luke Walton.
When they stole the ball at the end, he was standing by himself at the FT line, instead of taking the shot, he decided to pass the ball to Kobe who wasn’t in the position to score.
Luke Walton is one of the few white players in the league who can’t shoot.

No D in "irk" says:
Lebron’s D was what was always at question but he showed that he can D up when he wants to. That being said Kobe is still better, but the gap is closing.

I go LeBron without thinking twice. The fact Bron is only in his fifth year and we’re comparing him to a 12th year superstar with three titles says alot. If you give these two teams with equal talent I think you’ll see Lebron’s team do better everytime.

Jan.28 at 1:34 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Winning (and winning championships) certainly makes a difference, but it isn’t THE most important thing to take into consideration. Otherwise why would there ever be an argument as to who the best center of all-time was? Barring injury, when all is said and done, I believe LeBron will be remembered as a better player than Kobe. But we’ll have to wait and see. In the meantime, it should be awfully fun to watch. Hopefully they’ll face each other in a playoff series while they’re still in their respective primes.

Jan.28 at 1:35 pm

Jay Davis says:
I have to go with Kobe on this. People used to have good head-to-head games with $, but that didn’t make them better. Kobe has always gone hard night in and night out. LeBron just started doing it this year. I bet if you even ask LeBron who it is, he’ll say Kobe. Everybody in the League knows Kobe’s the best.

Jan.28 at 1:37 pm

Co Co says:
And doesn’t KG have good head to head games against Timmy. So I guess that means he’s better.?. All that being said, LeBron is a Laker killer…….

Jan.28 at 1:39 pm

white hot eboy says:
Co-sign Russ on hopefully seeing them play for a title someday.

Jan.28 at 1:40 pm

Bryan says:
He may be remembered as a better player in the future and may end up a better player but right now ? I take Kobe.

Jan.28 at 1:42 pm

Gerard Himself says:
Kobe is still the best. LeBron is great, but his jumper needs more work (and range) and he’s not the defender that Kobe is. [/obvious post]

Jan.28 at 1:43 pm

Jukai says:
Alright Izzo, I’m one of those few people who say Lebron is better than Kobe right now, and my reasoning is that Lebron brings more to the table right now than Kobe. Last year, Kobe’s intensity, scoring ability, and defensive prowess was so far superior to Lebron’s that despite the fact Lebron is better in other ways, it doesn’t even out. This year, I think Lebron has closed in the gap both scoring wise, and much more importantly, defensively. His killer instinct is undeniably there as he takes more shots than Bryant in the fourth quarter. Add Lebron’s far better court vision and passing, and his superior strength (allowing him to muscle out and rebound better than Kobe can), and I’m just leaning towards King James. Lebron is better in some situations, and Kobe is better in some situations… but if I needed to pick a player, I’d just go with Lebron. He’s more complete.

Jan.28 at 1:43 pm

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
As I wrote on the “Post Up” page: “LeBron has outplayed Kobe in head2heads for a long time. Mike never let anybody outplay him like that, so stop with the Kobe better than Mike arguments. If LeBron keeps improving (and start stacking championships) the Mike vs. LeBron would be legitimate down the line IMO.” (Eboy co-signed, so I’m not the only one with this opinion). If Kobe we’re the best he would prove it when he played his main rival for the crown. Like Mike vs. Magic (’91 finals) Drexler (’92 finals) Reggie Miller (various times), Barkley (’92 finals), and against countless other players or like Hakeem vs. Robinson and Shaq. Players take that head2head stuff serious, Kobe probably more than the rest considering his ego. If he could outplay LeBron he would. He simply can’t, combine this fact with that LeBron makes his teammates so much better than Kobe and there is only on outcome: LeBron is the greatest of the two.

Jan.28 at 1:43 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Lebron is averaging 27.1 points, 6.5 assists and 6.8 rebounds for his career, and he just turned 23. That’s just plain obnoxious. Kobe’s never averaged over six boards and six assists in the same season once. Obviously statistics aren’t everything, but LeBron is inhuman. I can totally seeing him average an Oscar-type (30, 11 and 12) triple-double for the season before too long. Of course that might require some teammates who can score, and an upping of the tempo (Oscar’s Royals averaged 123ppg that year).

Jan.28 at 1:45 pm

Myles Brown says:
….

Jan.28 at 1:46 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
But that head-to-head nonsense is being unfair to Kobe. When he DOES go mano-e-mano, he’s accused of being selfish. And when he doesn’t, he’s accused of being outplayed. As of this very instant, if I had to pick one of them to be on my team with my life on the line, I’m still taking Kobe. He’s a natural born killer. Of course by next season my answer might be different.

Jan.28 at 1:46 pm

Bryan says:
I agree russ, I think Lebron will be better I just take Kobe today for this season.

Jan.28 at 1:47 pm

Myles Brown says:
“When he DOES go mano-e-mano, he’s accused of being selfish. And when he doesn’t, he’s accused of being outplayed.” THANK YOU.

Jan.28 at 1:48 pm

Paps says:
Kobe’s better. Lebron has no style and is 1 dunk pony.

Jan.28 at 1:48 pm

H to the izzo says:
Russ,I can only see LeBron’s stats going up if his quality of teammates goes down.If he gets a good pg(ahem:Jason Kidd:ahem) and complementary scorer around him he probably won’t need to average a triple double.Having said that he probably will, just because he can.But I think winning championships will be more important to LeBron than averaging insane stats.

Jan.28 at 1:49 pm

white hot eboy says:
Lz, I co-signed about Mike. Kobe not meeting Lebron’s ability is not the issue, the issue is who is the better player, and right now there is no clear cut one. They are like 1a and 1b.

Jan.28 at 1:49 pm

Reggie Evans says:
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Jan.28 at 1:49 pm

Jukai says:
1 dunk pony? Have you EVER watched Lebron?

Jan.28 at 1:50 pm

Jukai says:
Izzo, his scoring would go down, his assists would increase. Hense, possibly averaging a triple double. He didn’t say his scoring would increase.

Jan.28 at 1:51 pm

Bryan says:
Lebron can’t shut people down like Kobe can.Their skills aren’t that dissimilar really, Kobe is a better scorer and defender while Lebron is a better rebounder and more willing passer. But that’s not saying that Kobe is a bad rebounder, he’s a very good rebounder actually.

Jan.28 at 1:51 pm

Tsiry says:
LeBron may be better than most all-stars, but no one compares to Kobe Bryant. I guess everyone knows it…

Jan.28 at 1:51 pm

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
And Gerard to your “he’s not the defender that Kobe is” comment. Who was locking down who yesterday? (Kobe 1-6 in the 4th with LeBron guarding him) whereas LeBron made that jumper w. 20 ticks left seem like a stroll in the park. The great defenders don’t make their name shutting down Raja Bell or Jason Richardson, they do it against the other top talent. Besides it’s only really this season that Kobe has been defending like it mattered to him.

Jan.28 at 1:52 pm

H to the izzo says:
Jukai:If he had Kidd around him as a pg his assists would go down.

Jan.28 at 1:53 pm

white hot eboy says:
And it’s on Kobe to decide when to take over and when not too. That’s his team, those are “his guys” and he has the keys to the whole Lakers tractor trailer. If he can’t figure out when to push the accelator and when to coast while the road is clear, then he really hasn’t figured out the game of basketball as well as we all think he has. It’s not like he’s been in the league for less than 5 years like Lebron……oh wait.

Jan.28 at 1:53 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Championships will make the difference when it comes to legacy. However, when judging players based on their individual talents, it’s difficult to factor in a team accomplishment. Put LeBron at his current skill level on the ‘96-’02 Lakers with an in-his-prime Shaq and Phil Jackson, who knows how many championships they win? That’s why I hesitate at making championships the final deciding factor in head-to-head comparisons between players.

Jan.28 at 1:54 pm

white hot eboy says:
Shia, did you see the game yesterday? Just curious.

Jan.28 at 1:56 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
And I’m not going to say asking Kobe to guard LeBron is unfair or anything, but LeBron DOES have him by roughly two inches, 40 pounds and six years. Kobe isn’t fortunate enough to have a Scottie Pippen alongside to stick the opponent’s best player. Kobe has to be Pippen AND Jordan, every single night. Not easy.

Jan.28 at 1:57 pm

Jukai says:
Izzo, yes that’s true. Getting Jason Kidd isn’t the only way to get a better team! However, I don’t think his assists would go down either. I bet Lebron would get a buncha baskets off passing it back to Kidd (even Kidd could score with Lebron passing it to him!) Also, Kobe is a great defender and passer, I’ve seen it… but Lebron is also a fantastic defender, I think that has improved the most out of everything I’ve seen last year. It’s not just about his increase in steals and blocks. His lateral speed is faster and smarter, and he really can shut someone down when he tries. He’s just fantastic.

Jan.28 at 1:57 pm

Reggie Evans says:
Zydrunas Ilgauskas.

Jan.28 at 1:57 pm

Jukai says:
Hey Russ, LeBron doesn’t have Pippen either! He has… Drew Gooden =/

Jan.28 at 1:58 pm

Bryan says:
Yeah I saw the game , I saw with the exception of the final shot Kobe making a Lebron a passer or just outright denying him the ball at certain points, I saw Kobe getting triple teamed and getting hacked on numerous forays into the paint that sunk his FG%. NOt making excuses just saying what I saw.Don’t get me wrong I LOVE Lebron. I just think Kobe is a better basketball player.

Jan.28 at 1:58 pm

Jake Appleman says:
I think they’re both wonderful at basketball, and that we should respect them as individuals. And what Russ said. So there.

Jan.28 at 1:59 pm

Jukai says:
Bryan was watching a different game than I was.

Jan.28 at 1:59 pm

white hot eboy says:
You must have been watching a different game, Shia.

Jan.28 at 1:59 pm

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
I agree Russ. Championships is not the single decider, head2heads, stats, crunchness and so on should be accounted for. And since LeBron probably wouldn’t have forced the Big Salami out of town, my guess is more than 3 championships with him instead of Kobe.

Jan.28 at 2:00 pm

namik says:
Kobe right now, LeBron within the next two unless Kobe steps up his work ethic which would seem impossible.

Jan.28 at 2:01 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Jukai: LeBron has Larry Hughes and Anderson Varejao (well, he did) who, despite their obvious offensive failings, are terrific defenders. Also, LeBron guarding Kobe makes more sense (given LeBron’s size, strength and speed) than Kobe guarding LeBron. I don’t remember Jordan having to stick Karl Malone one-on-one too often.

Jan.28 at 2:01 pm

white hot eboy says:
Kobe’s work ethic is never the issue.

Jan.28 at 2:01 pm

Reggie Evans says:
Larry Hughes is clutch.

Jan.28 at 2:03 pm

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
And Bryan, if Kobe so greatly denied LeBron the ball and made him a passer. How in the world did Lebron end up with 41 (14 in the 4th) points in the game? Just wondering..

Jan.28 at 2:03 pm

namik says:
I know white, I mean he will have to get better than he is and that would require more work and he would have to work harder which would mean he would step his work ethic up which at his age seems impossible. And Russ is saying it all.

Jan.28 at 2:04 pm

Jukai says:
Russ, Jordan would take the ball away from Malone like it was his job. That being said, you make very good points that I can’t argue.

Jordan would shoot lightning bolts out of his arse if he played in the league today.

Jan.28 at 2:07 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
My ONLY concern with LeBron (besides injury and the fact that his supporting cast doesn’t do all that much supporting) is that he’s more concerned about becoming Mr. Global Icon and billionaire than he is about becoming the best basketball player ever. Which, as far as I’m concerned, is a goal that’s well within reach. Blasphemy or not. If he simply focused all his energy on that, the rest would come anyway. He’s seriously like a combination of Magic, Michael and Barkley.

Jan.28 at 2:08 pm

namik says:
Malone would knock his teeth out like Steve Nash. Anyway class time. See yall tommorow. The next 40 ppg month seems imminent.

Jan.28 at 2:08 pm

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
Russ, comparing LeBron and Malone is ´simply not holding in court - physiques somewhat alike but games very different. About as stupid as the guy who compared pot smoking and murder on the Harrison-weed post the other day. Magic would be a better comparison physique/game-wise. Mike checked Magic lots of times.

Jan.28 at 2:09 pm

Reggie Evans says:
You can’t be a global icon and play for the Cleveland Cavaliers …

Jan.28 at 2:10 pm

Bryan says:
I’ve said before I think Lebron has the ability to lead the league in everything.Honestly.

Jan.28 at 2:10 pm

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
Co-sign on the combination of Magic, Mike and Charles line though - right on point.

Jan.28 at 2:10 pm

Jukai says:
Actually, I’d argue it’s better Evans. Globally, no one knows what team you play for, you are the Cleveland Lebrons.

white hot eboy says:
3 Point Percentage-Shia

Jan.28 at 2:14 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
I wasn’t comparing Malone’s game to LeBron’s, just their physiques. Magic wasn’t anywhere near as big and strong as LeBron. (And I recall Pippen handling a lot of the Magic-defending duties.)

Jan.28 at 2:15 pm

white hot eboy says:
TWICE, I’ve posted the same comment as Jukai, the world must be coming to an end today.

Jan.28 at 2:15 pm

Bryan says:
He’ll never lead in percentages because all the defenses are geared to stop him so he will never get enough open looks.

Jan.28 at 2:16 pm

Mike C says:
What more does Bron have to do??
His team beat Kobe’s team five times in a row and he personally outplayed Kobe in about four of them. He took his team farther in the playoffs than Kobe ever has without Shaq. And he’s putting up better numbers. I mean how do you still justify that Kobe’s better than him right now?

Jan.28 at 2:16 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
LeBron’s gonna have trouble leading the L in rebounding unless Dwight Howard gets bored and runs away to join the circus.

Jan.28 at 2:16 pm

Jukai says:
Not to mention, Magic could score but Magic was a pass first kind of guy. He really didn’t have to be shut down at all costs. Lebron, on the other hand…

If the question was “Who’s the best in this point in time?” I’d take Kobe, no flinching. But I think Bron’s gonna win this argument when his career is over. Just saying.

Jan.28 at 2:19 pm

Bryan says:
It’s not that it will happen I just think it’s possible Russ, the guy is 6′8 250 and can sky.

Jan.28 at 2:20 pm

white hot eboy says:
How can almost all of us agree that Lebron might be able to avearge close to a triple double and we’re still making this argument? Can any of us agree that Kobe can do that too? And if he can, why hasn’t he yet?

Jan.28 at 2:24 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Mike C: Getting to the Finals in the East last year was about as challenging as it was to get to the Playoffs in the West. Wish I was kidding.
eBoy: The thing is, he hasn’t actually done it yet. Like Sarah Connor once said, the future is not set.

Jan.28 at 2:28 pm

white hot eboy says:
True, Russ, but like you, as someone who has a ton of useless basketball knowledge stored in my semi-intelligent mind, I don’t think ANYONE EVER said Kobe had the potential to pull those types of numbers. Like you pointed out, he has never averaged more than 6 reb & 6 asst. To even mention that about Lebron and non one else in the league, is WAY crazy.

Jan.28 at 2:29 pm

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
Sure Russ, their physiques are similar and I know you’re not comparing their games, but there’s a lot of difference in banging with that physique in the paint and dealing with it on the perimeter. Bowen did a good job against LeBron and he’s not that much bigger than Kobe, so if Kobe was such a great defender it should be possible to make up for the weight and height with quickness and smarts.
Pip and Mike for sure took turns guarding Magic in ‘91, but before that Jordan had locked him down in many games. The zen master only launched the Pippen-plan after the Bulls lost game 1.

Jan.28 at 2:30 pm

Jared says:
I take LeBron from here on out…if I want the ball in one of their hands for one play I’m goin Kobe, but if I need one for 48 minutes give me bron bron

Jan.28 at 2:32 pm

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
And Magic (6′9, 240?)was the closest thing to Lebron if you combine size and skill. Sure he wasn’t as strong and athletic as LeBron but nobody outside the NFL has ever really been.

Jan.28 at 2:35 pm

Mike C says:
Russ: Yeah you’re probably right about the East.. but how can anyone defend Kobe here when he’s lost FIVE straight games against LeBron now??? And when LeBron put up better numbers than him in most of those head to head match-ups?? Do you think Kobe realizes this fact?

Jan.28 at 2:35 pm

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
Jukai, Magic orchestrated everything the Lakers did. Maybe he wasn’t scoring but he for sure needed to be shut down. And Lebron isn’t pass first, if he had the Kobe-gene he would average 40.

Jan.28 at 2:36 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Part of the reason Bowen could stick Bron (besides being a terrific defender) is that he has essentially zero responsibilities on the offensive end except to go spot up in the corner. Kobe’s still an elite defender in my book, LeBron’s just damn near unstoppable. No shame in that. I repeat–one game, today, life on the line, I take Mr. Bryant.

Jan.28 at 2:37 pm

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
Should have read: “And LeBron isn’t pass first?”

Jan.28 at 2:38 pm

Reggie Evans says:
Do you know why Lebron continues to say that Kobe is better than him? Lebron is smart. Lebron does not wish to unleash the fury.

Jan.28 at 2:39 pm

Kris says:
I’d have to take Kobe just for his overall body of work, which is unfair to Lebron, but it’s looking more and more everyday that Lebron is ready to snatch the torch from Kobe.

Jan.28 at 2:40 pm

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
Fair enuff, we’re not agreeing. However. One SHOT, today, life on the line, I take Mr. Bryant as well. But not a game, his impact is just not as big as LeBrons.

Jan.28 at 2:41 pm

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
Hmm hate to correct myself but actually one shot, today, life on the line, I’m taking Hedo.

Jan.28 at 2:43 pm

Kris says:
One shot life on the line I’m taking Raynard Allen.

Jan.28 at 2:46 pm

TheMC5 says:
Russ: 1 on 1 or 5 on 5? 1 on 1, I go Kobe, but in a team game, I take LeBron, hands down.

Jan.28 at 2:47 pm

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
Evans; LeBron is smart, but not because of the “fury” but because he’s lulling Bryant to sleep with all his “Kobe is the best”-comments, while he outplays him and snatches his “torch”. When Kobe finally realises this, even his work ethic will make him catch LeBron. To use a cliche: Action speaks louder than words. Kobe wanted to be “the Man” not a lot has happened in Laker land winning wise, since his wish was granted.

Jan.28 at 2:48 pm

Eric says:
You guys do know that Lebron’s Cavs had a winning record against the West last season and Kobe’s Lakers had a losing record against the East. Hmmmm, I’m just saying.

Pretty insighful, LZ.

Jan.28 at 2:48 pm

Lebron is just speaking the truth. He knows he has a way to go to get to Kobe’s level.

Jan.28 at 2:53 pm

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
And 1 on 1, just like in 5 on 5, LeBron would just overpower Kobe.

Jan.28 at 2:54 pm

Ryne Nelson says:
Even if the Lakers have a losing record in the East, doesn’t the fact they have a winning record in the West cancel that argument?

Jan.28 at 2:54 pm

Reggie Evans says:
OK.

Jan.28 at 2:56 pm

Ryne Nelson says:
@Lz Why are we even saying this? Yes, Kobe would lose o LeBron one on one. But Kobe is the bester player. He’s not the more talented, LeBron wins that. But talent was not the question. It’s who’s the best? Kobe, hands down.

Lebron James because he averages 29.9 PPG 7.70 RPG 7.3 APG Thats Amazing for a Forward On the other side theres Kobe that averages
27.9 PPG 6.20 RPG 5.1 APG I would say that Lebron is the best player

Jan.28 at 3:18 pm

Galo says:
Kobe’s better. Period. The Cavs won because they are a better team, not ’cause ‘Bron is better. Not even MJ could work miracles…

Jan.28 at 3:20 pm

WhaHuh says:
they play different games/ different height/different build/different ages/ different positons. This is worse than the Kobe- MJ comparisons

Jan.28 at 3:30 pm

Ryne Nelson says:
@WhaHuh What else are we going to talk about all day if not this? Rick Morey?

Jan.28 at 3:30 pm

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
@Ryne, please give me an argument why Kobe is the best player. Respect your opinion, but it’s not enugh just to state it in this fora.
Where as the empiri is there on my opinion. LeBron ;better stats, wins individual matchups as well as team wins, better teammate, would win in one on one, puts team goals higher than own, takes his team farther in the playoffs, doen’t biitch, crunch when it matter - pistons series (wheras Kobe hits loads of gamewinners in regular season then disappears against Suns, makes his teammates better.
What do Kobe have on LeBron? A 81 point game vs. the Raptors and 3 championships as Shaq’s Robin. Fact is LeBron has already showed a lot more poise as the alpha-dawg on his team than Kobe has or (I predict) will ever do.

@Reg Ev. Mike all day every day. Go through the list from my 3.30-post, apart from the biitching part Mike is a big fat resounding yes to all the criteria.

Jan.28 at 3:49 pm

Jukai says:
The Cavaliers have a better team than the Lakers? When did THIS school of thought come out? Larry Hughes? LARRY HUGHES?

Jan.28 at 3:51 pm

Jukai says:
Also Lz, to an earlier point, Magic tried to pass first. Lebron tries to get his team involved, but Magic tried to pass first. There is a difference.

Jan.28 at 3:54 pm

Ryne Nelson says:
@Lz Talented players are those who just possess an amazing array of gifts and skills that really can’t be taught…aka LeBron James (and Kobe, but not quite at the same level). There are many players in the NBA who have talent. A prime example of a supremely talented player is Gerald Wallace. Yet, you won’t find anyone saying GForce is the best player in the League. Now, I’d contend the BEST players might also be the most talented but they achieve a lot via hard work. Dominique Wilkins was far more talented than Larry Bird, but Bird was a BETTER player. Kobe’s the same way.

Jan.28 at 3:54 pm

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
Agree Jukai, who has more quality Odom, Bynum, DFisher, the young PG’s, Halfpipe, and Walton or Hughes,Z,Gooden, Pavlo, Sideshow, and Yogi Gibson. Maybe I’m forgetting someone. But I’ll pick the Lakers supporting cast any day.

Jan.28 at 3:55 pm

Jukai says:
Kobe WAS the same way.

Jan.28 at 3:56 pm

Jukai says:
I get what everyone is saying about Kobe’s intangibles and his drive, but the arguement is that Lebron has caught up in all those catagories enough so that the things he is superior in make him a better player.

Jan.28 at 3:56 pm

Ryne Nelson says:
@Lz - Kobe’s extreme work ethic can really push the barriers and get him in trouble. I might also quote my friend at the LA Times Mark Heisler, who wrote this to me in an email: “mostly he’s a super-entitled, super-confident, super-talented, super-committed, young guy who’s too brave for his own good. When he takes a certain course, it’s all but impossible to deflect him, even if it’s as nuts as saying the Lakers lied to him, misrepresented their commitment to winning and personally vilified buss and kupchak”

Jan.28 at 3:58 pm

Ryne Nelson says:
You have to love or hate Kobe for that work ethic. But that’s what makes him better than LeBron. That work ethic is similar to Jordan’s. Hence the comparisons.

Jan.28 at 3:59 pm

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
Agree again, Jukai. Not saying Magic and LeBron is that alike. Just that Magic’s combination of size and sick skillset are the closest. We’re talking A-level talent here who would be a better to compare? Barkley was 6′4.
@ again Ryne, where’s the argumentation, you’re just stating your opinion. If it’s that hard to find good arguments for why kobe is better, then I like my case.

Jan.28 at 4:01 pm

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
@Jukai, by the way, isn’t passing involving your teammates? Magic was the best passer and “involver” ever..

Jan.28 at 4:01 pm

white hot eboy says:
Ryne that’s the second writer’s name you dropped in one day (actually your first day). Are you trying to promote these characters at the benefit of SLAM and hope that the readers here will trapse around looking for these articles on the intranets? Just wondering.

Jan.28 at 4:02 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Not sure if I automatically buy that ‘Nique was more talented than Bird. More physically gifted, as far as speed and leaping ability? No question. But there’s more to talent than that. Dominique could have spent his entire life in the gym and not have equalled Bird’s shooting or court vision. “Natural” talent isn’t just about athleticism.

Jan.28 at 4:03 pm

Ryne Nelson says:
@Eboy Sorry. I had no intentions like that at all. I didn’t know that was against the way things are done here. As you said, it’s my first day. Please forgive me, man.

Jan.28 at 4:03 pm

Ryne Nelson says:
I was just citing other’s ideas as a support for an argument.

Jan.28 at 4:04 pm

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
And name-dropping writers names and quoteing them, especially when said quote doesn’t give argumentation either, doesn’t get you credit in my book. Think for yourself dude..

Jan.28 at 4:06 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
And I think what people are saying about Magic is that you could defend him as a passer without worrying that he was going to a) posterize you, or b) drop 50 on you. Obviously Magic could score, but LeBron adds a whole ‘nother dimension. Magic may have been able to post you up, but he wasn’t going to spin by you and dunk on your center.

Jan.28 at 4:06 pm

Ryne Nelson says:
@Russ I agree with you. I think the best of the best are those who are naturally talented (past athleticism, as you mentioned) AND who work continually on their game to achieve the highest possibilities.

Jan.28 at 4:07 pm

Jukai says:
Lz, Lebron distributes the ball but mainly scores when he starts moving with the ball. Magic would try to pass when he had the ball, and only took the shot when he really thought there was no other option. This made Magic infinitely easier to defend than Lebron. However, because Magic was such a ridiculous (the best) passer, this made Magic Johnson incredibly dangerous. But he wasn’t this incredible defensive task. Capish?

Jan.28 at 4:07 pm

white hot eboy says:
Not a criticism, Ryne, just asking really. And I’m glad you’re back in the mix. Beware of the character named jukai, he will make you feel like you are in a drug induced coma if you listen to him long enough.

Jan.28 at 4:08 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
And Ryne, your definition of talented–”those who just possess an amazing array of gifts and skills that really can’t be taught” is the kind of definition that should have Bird’s picture next to it.

Jan.28 at 4:08 pm

Jukai says:
Damn, Russ beat me to it. And probably said it better than I did.

Jan.28 at 4:09 pm

Jukai says:
Ryne, don’t listen to WHE. He’s angry I beat him to mentioning Lebron’s poor three point shooting.

Jan.28 at 4:10 pm

Ryne Nelson says:
@ Lz Kobe is better (right now) because he gets more out of his also considerable talents than LeBron does. In other words, Kobe is closer to actually getting the most out of his potential than LeBron. LeBron has so far to go…if he just wanted it more.

Jan.28 at 4:10 pm

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
Heislers comment merely states stuff about Kobe’s caracther, still waiting for your reasons for why Kobe is better. And do you seriously think that a guy who averages 30, 7, and 7 and more or less singlehandily beat a goooood pistons team lacks drive. Come on man, you must have a better argument than “Kobe’s drive and work ethic” - even if they are superior LeBron still outplay him. Check my 3.30 post, so far I don’t hear you disagreeing.

Jan.28 at 4:10 pm

H to the izzo says:
Ryne:Don’t listen to either of them.

Jan.28 at 4:13 pm

Jukai says:
Ryne, I’m not sure that’s the best arguement. Sebastian Telfair probably gets the most out of his potential that he possibly can. Does that make him as good as Kobe?

Jan.28 at 4:14 pm

H to the izzo says:
Jukai:Irrelevant,different levels,moving on…

Jan.28 at 4:14 pm

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
@Ryne, Kobe gets so much more out of his talents. What is that exactly he gets? More playoffs wins or better stats? Hmm I’m puzzled..

Jan.28 at 4:16 pm

Jukai says:
What, are you the referee now Izzo?

Jan.28 at 4:17 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
When Kobe was 23, he averaged 25, 5.5 and 5.5…playing with Shaq. Oh yeah, and they won 58 games and the NBA championship. Numbers are nice, but they don’t always tell the whole story. I feel like it’s awfully easy to forget just how talented Kobe is.

Jan.28 at 4:19 pm

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
Jukai, again I’m not saying Magic and LeBron are alike. Just that when we are talking A-list talent, Magics combo of talent/size is probably the closest, but again you can’t really compare LeBron to anybody. Whereas Kobe is very comparable because of size/tendencies - there’s been a lot of high scoring athletic shooting guard, few as good as Kobe. But LeBron is the first do it all basketball playing linebacker we’ve seen.

Jan.28 at 4:19 pm

Ryne Nelson says:
@Jukai Does Bassy make the most of his talent? As I recall, wasn’t he sharing the first SLAM cover featuring LBJ?

Jan.28 at 4:20 pm

Bryan says:
Kobe at 23 without Shaq and a similar supporting cast to Lebron’s would probably be dropping 35 and triple doubles on the regular. Especially he played the 3 and not the 2.

Jan.28 at 4:20 pm

H to the izzo says:
Ryne:There’s a difference between supposed talent and actual talent.

Jan.28 at 4:24 pm

Ryne Nelson says:
@Izzo - I believe the article spoke about how they were young, but their talent, at that point, was worth talking about. They they weren’t just hype and supposed talent. They were for real. Great article.

Jan.28 at 4:24 pm

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
4.14 post should have read: “@Ryne, YOU SAY Kobe gets so much more out of his talents. What is IT that HE exactly gets? More playoffs wins or better stats? Hmm I’m puzzled..”
Sorry I’m in a lot of arguments here, so my fingers are letting my brain down (or vica-verca).

Jan.28 at 4:26 pm

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
Ryne, still not any answers from you?

Jan.28 at 4:26 pm

H to the izzo says:
Ryne:The hype machine around Bassy was far greater than his actual talent,no doubt he was insane in HS but was no-where near as good as people said he was.Should have went to college etc

Jan.28 at 4:32 pm

Ryne Nelson says:
@Lz - Though hard work day in and day out, Kobe made himself a better player, given the level of natural talent he has. LeBron, given his talent, has NOT made himself the best. He’s got so much latent talent that he needs to learn how and when to use. There’s a strategy to the game besides getting numbers. It’s all encompassing. LeBron hasn’t gotten to that realization yet, like Kobe has (and Michael, Bird, Magic, the greats did).

Jan.28 at 4:35 pm

Ryne Nelson says:
@Lz - Back off bro

Jan.28 at 4:35 pm

Jared says:
Brons in year 5 and has been to the finals and the conf championship, and has put up MVP type numbers since basically year 2…I think the refs have given him a lot of support, but that’s generally in substitution of that which is lacking from his team.

Jan.28 at 4:37 pm

Jared says:
I feel you though, he could do more, he could devote more time to solidifying a J, but he’s not really lacking or finding it hard to score.

Jan.28 at 4:39 pm

Sparker says:
one thing for sure: lbj is definitely better, right now, at the end of games. and mainly because he has a younger man’s flat-out-balls-to-the-wall energy. when kobe starts looking bushed and you kind of notice that hairline is pushing back further than it used to, the lbj locomotive is coming down the track and you’d better tip the f*ck out of the way

Jan.28 at 4:41 pm

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
Okay, there’s an argument. Thank you. Just disagree in my opinion he discovered how to use it - all his talent (not that he can’t get better of course) some point last year, possibly the Pistons series. And chill man, don’t get your feelings hurt on the first day. Might as well get used to it, it’s all in good fun. Don’t take it personal.

@WhaHuh - hater don’t think so. Have a lot of love in me, ask the girls.
Just think that Kobe is a vastly overrated basketball player (with my criteria being: the player being good for a team and making them win, not scoring 50+) besides that he seems like a unsympathic fakeazz person, therefore, and of course because of James’ immense talent/skills I will forever argue that LeBron is better.

Jan.28 at 5:23 pm

Ryne Nelson says:
…until Kobe wins the chip again.

Jan.28 at 5:24 pm

Wow. I’d call Kobe a lot of things (and not all of them complimentary), but “vastly overrated” certainly wouldn’t be one of them.

Jan.28 at 5:25 pm

SRV or Artis Gilmore?

Jan.28 at 5:28 pm

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
He’s a great player Russ, no doubt about it. But people are talking about him in the same sentence as Mike and Magic, in my book that is vastly overrated. Just an opinion.

Mingus is great, Burton is good, Sheehan is better than Burton, Paul McCartney was extremly underrated, John Enthwhistle was mammoth in his sound approach.

Jan.28 at 5:31 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
izzo: Stevie Ray Vaughn would have had worlds of trouble with Artis in the blocks. I’m guessing SRV was a better guitarist, though.

Jan.28 at 5:31 pm

All of the Beatles were underrated with their instruments,Harrison would be the best example of this.

Jan.28 at 5:32 pm

Jan.28 at 5:34 pm

H to the izzo says:
Russ:I dunno,Stevie has those giant hands and that big hat wouldn’t make things easy for Artis.

Jan.28 at 5:38 pm

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
@Izzo, I’ve seen (and played in) quite a few. 17 years and counting of “experience”. Sometime exagerating a bit gets your point across, he’s maybe not “vastly” overrated, but I sure think he’s overrated
@ tt of course Shaq needed Kobe like Mike needed Pippen, Magic needed Worthy, Duncan needed Robinson/Ginibili/Parker, but until Kobe wins as “the man” he can’t be mentioned with Magic, Bird, Mike, etc.

Jan.28 at 5:39 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
SRV’s biggest problem, best I can tell, is that he’s dead. In that sense, Jimi and Wilt are more evenly matched.

Jan.28 at 5:42 pm

Izzo, John Lennon was perhaps the greatest rhythm guitarist player, EVER.

Eboy:Isn’t Keith Richards in essence a rhythm guitarist? If so it’s him.

Jan.28 at 5:47 pm

He would be a whole lot better than what he is now. Was Kobe the youngest to ever win the Eastern Western MVP award. No. But he was the best one out there in the 2007 Eastern Western All-star game. Lets see what kobe would be doing about 5 or six years back. Let Kobe and Lebron switch ages and experience. Lebron was a better rookie. Kobe was good his rookie year but not like Lebron was. But I have to say for NOW Kobe Bryant.

Jan.28 at 8:35 pm

Kobes better Lebrons still turning into a basketball player hes only using his athletic abiltiy way more then anything else he score 41 points but he took so many shots and KOBE is just a better BASKETBALL player and hes almost as athletic just not as strong as LeBron.
