The Post Up: Blazers outlast Bulls

Jack should be miked up every night.

By: Holly MacKenzie

Only three games on the schedule last night, but they were some good ones. While there was some messy basketball being played the games were still pretty entertaining. The double-overtime marathon between Portland and Chicago was fun, even when I thought it was never going to end. Joe Smith was huge for Chicago as was Ben Gordon down the stretch, but the story is these Trailblazers who are continuing to grow and inspire game by game. I loved having Jack and Roy in the lineup together and after the game was over you can see how close all of the guys are. Their chemistry looks great and they don’t need to mess with anything. Brandon Roy and the rest of this young team can teach the rest of the league a few things about teamwork.

The Denver/SA game was a low-scoring one but I enjoyed watching the defensive efforts of Marcus Camby and Kenyon Martin. Camby has been great for the Nuggets this season. I didn’t expect for them to defeat the Spurs, but they did and it was the defense that was the story. Camby had that triple-double with 10 blocks a few weeks back and this was his 10th game with at least 18 boards.

I was in a little bit of shock when I noticed that the Sonics were up by 20 against the Suns. After scoring only 13 points in a pathetic first quarter they turned things on in the second and were down only two at the half. Phoenix was up for most of the second half, but Seattle was persistent and hung around until the end. Steve Nash in a headband was fun. The Suns with the headbands played almost as badly as the Lakers did in the short-shorts. It is funny to me how everyone is talking about how badly the Suns are playing and with the win last night, they are in first place in the West and only Boston and Detroit have more wins than they do.

It’s been mentioned before, but I will say it again. Tomorrow night is Boston vs. Detroit, round 2. Can’t wait to catch that. The late game tonight should be a good match-up between New Orleans and Golden State. Lets see how the Warriors bounce back from that horrible fourth quarter in Dallas.

Portland 115 Chicago 109 2OT

Second night of a back-to-back for both teams and at the end of this one they were tired. In a grind it out game the Trailblazers had just enough in the tank to overcome the Bulls and defeat them 115-109 in Chicago last night. While Chicago led for most of the first half and went up by as many as 14 points in the third Portland charged back and took the lead in the final minutes before Gordon hit a jumper to tie the game with 1:05 left in regulation. Both teams would miss their next shots and the game went into an overtime period that saw the two teams battle back and forth and the combination of Ben Gordon and Joe Smith tied things for Chicago every time Portland would take the lead forcing a second overtime. In the second extra session, Jarrett Jack came up huge for Portland as he got the layup to go and the foul to complete the three-point play to put Portland up 111-108 with 19 seconds on the clock. In the final seconds James Jones hit all four of his free throws and Portland got to take away their 15th victory in 16 games. Roy finished with 25 points and 11 assists, Travis Outlaw had 21 points off of the bench, LaMarcus Aldridge added a 14-point, 13-rebound double-double and Jarrett Jack was instrumental off of the bench with 17 points. Gordon led the Bulls with 32 points off of the bench and Joe Smith had a season-high 31 points to go along with 11 rebounds. Ben Wallace had 12 points and 14 rebounds and Kirk Hinrich added 12 points and 9 assists.

Denver 80 San Antonio 77

It was their defensive effort that gave the Denver Nuggets the 80-77 victory over the Spurs last night. While the game was close early, Denver used a 13-2 run to start the second quarter to go up by as many as 16 points in the first half. In the second, the game was close throughout and the fourth quarter was a battle that was won by defensive will. Denver forced Tim Duncan into shooting only 7-20 for the game and having two costly turnovers in the final minutes with the game on the line. While San Antonio led 75-73 with under three minutes left in the game Anthony Carter hit a three-pointer and then stripped Duncan on the following play which lead to a basket by Kenyon Martin to give the Nuggets a one point lead with 45 seconds on the clock. On the Spurs next possession Martin blocked Tony Parker and then Allen Iverson was sent to the line with 6.6 seconds left and he hit both free throws to give Denver a three point lead. On the final possession for the Spurs, Martin switched to Michael Finley and altered the three-point attempt at the buzzer to give Denver the game. Allen Iverson led the way offensively, scoring 29 points while Carmelo Anthony added 17 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists and Marcus Camby pulled down 18 rebounds and blocked 4 shots. Martin finished with a career-high 7 blocked shots as the Nuggets had 14 blocked shots as a team. Tony Parker had 20 points and 9 assists for the Spurs despite having seven of his shots blocked by the Nuggets and shooting only 8-19 from the floor. Duncan finished with 20 and 14 but it took him 20 shots to get there. Michael Finley added 18 points for the Spurs that seem lost without Manu Ginobili who missed his fourth straight game.

Phoenix 104 Seattle 96

Midway through the first quarter and the Suns were down 20 points to Seattle. It was retro night in Phoenix and the Suns high-octane offense was nowhere to be found. Luckily for them, Amare Stoudemire got hot quickly and the Suns turned what could have been an embarrassing loss into a come from behind victory. At the end of the first quarter the Suns were down 33-13 to the Sonics. It was their lowest scoring quarter of the season and they did not want the rest of the game to go as that period had. In the second, they bounced back and out-rebounded, out-hustled and out-shot Seattle, stunning them when their lead was cut to only two points at the half. In the third quarter it was a whole new game and the Suns turned a 58-57 advantage into a 9-point lead at the start of the fourth. In the final period, Stoudemire was too much for the Sonics. He had 14 points in the quarter and when the game got close in the final minutes, he was solid, scoring and then coming up with a big steal on the final play of the game before knocking down free throws when it mattered. Raja Bell hit two big free throws with under a minute in the game to provide Phoenix with some breathing room. Stoudemire led Phoenix with 34 points and 11 rebounds, Steve Nash scored 17 points to go with 10 assists and Leandro Barbosa added 16 points off of the bench. Shawn Marion had 11 points and 14 rebounds and Bell added 11 points and 3 blocked shots for the Suns. Kevin Durant led Seattle in the loss, scoring 28 points while Kurt Thomas had 14 points and 12 rebounds against his former team. Earl Watson had 20 points and 8 assists and Jeff Green added 14.

suns are garbage. how do they nearly lose to the sonics???

Jan.4 at 9:19 am

Tarzan Cooper says:
the suns suck not because of their record, but because of how they play, which is exclusively offensive, and offensively exclusively to those who understand what it takes to win a chip.

Jan.4 at 9:19 am

Tarzan Cooper says:
also, steve nash is the most over-rated player in the league.

white hot eboy says:
What’s up, Holly from Canada?

Jan.4 at 10:01 am

Tarzan Cooper says:
ahem; steve nash is allergic to defense. seriously, that is not a joke, he breaks out in hives when he is asked to play d, just look at his neck. everybody says the suns are built around nash, plus he got the mvps(BS). the fact is, you could take steve off the suns and add chris paul, and they would be much better, same with baron davis. maybe mo williams. but if marion is taken off that team, it will be a completely different team. you cant replace him with anyone, josh smith comes the closest, but shawn is much quicker. 6-7, plays great d on positions 1-4, great rebounder, more of a blur than leandro on the break, great finisher, AND he hits 3’s. the suns are built around marion, and to a lesser extent amare. remember in 03 when the suns scared the spurs in the playoffs? steph played well, as did marion, and rookie stat. the point is, steve has never been the most valuable player on his team, much less the league.

Jan.4 at 10:04 am

white hot eboy says:
Well I know for sure now that that’s not the real Tarzan.

Jan.4 at 10:05 am

holly says:
what do u think of our dirk diggler?started bad,but really found his rhythm now.hope he keeps it even in the playoffs.playoffs sucked last year, had huge expectations after finals ´06.f..k d.wade and that f….n calls.damn,i´m still not over it.they gotta win that damn trophy

holly says:
ha,ha,ha.o.k.well he hasn´t won anything with the mavs and gets not younger.they got a few years left to reach their goals.they need a better center.damp is so damn soft

Jan.4 at 10:15 am

holly says:
nuff said.remember where the suns were before nash and how he turned things around.and it´s even a wonder how marion hits 3s with that ugly shot

Jan.4 at 10:15 am

Tarzan Cooper says:
insert shaq quote here

Jan.4 at 10:16 am

white hot eboy says:
Too bad there’s only a tiny handful of good centers in the league. If there were more, there would be WAY more teams that could be relevant.

Jan.4 at 10:17 am

holly says:
and 03 was a bit lucky.remember marburys lucky shot at hte buzzer?

Jan.4 at 10:17 am

white hot eboy says:
Yeah, but if Nash stayed in Dallas, I’m pretty sure they would have a title together by now. Cuban fuc*ed up BIG time.

Jan.4 at 10:18 am

QQ says:
Spurs - Nugs, great game, with A.I. carrying the nuggets like it’s his. (It’s supposed to be Carmelo Anthony’s team ,right?)

Jan.4 at 10:18 am

holly says:
amen

Jan.4 at 10:20 am

Tarzan Cooper says:
steve didnt “turn things around”, he was one of many additions that fit the gameplan d’antoni had. he wouldnt have been able to play this style of ball if he didnt have STATRIX.

Jan.4 at 10:21 am

holly says:
but fake-tarzan got one thing right.nash´s D isn´t the greatest.by now the mavs could even win games because of their D

Jan.4 at 10:23 am

Tarzan Cooper says:
if nash stayed in dallas, they would have stayed the same good team but not serious contenders.

Jan.4 at 10:26 am

holly says:
they should have added oaktree to their roster 06.d.wade would have thinked twice to go to the rim.trash talk inc.

Tell me holly, when Germans go on a beach vacation, do they claim half the beach to dig holes in the sand like they do in Holland? Or is that just your way of f*ckin with us?

Jan.4 at 10:49 am

Hisham says:
And Real Holly, did you delete some of the offensive exchanges between Eboy and this dude slamyomama? They were there yesterday, i don’t remember in which post, but now i can’t find them anymore. I wanted to relive a comment from Ryan that cracked me up in that thread..

Jan.4 at 10:57 am

Holly MacKenzie says:
Hisham!!! I didn’t delete any of the comments, but perhaps I should have? The Blazers are rocking my world right about now. It was sweet seeing Jarrett Jack have a great game. He was one of my faves in college and it sucked to see him get lost in the crowd here in the L. They are playing team ball and I love it!! It is exciting. I love Nate’s defense first attitude and I could feel how frustrated he was when his boys let the Bulls grab a few loose balls in the first OT. Ahhh, it’s good to see.

Jan.4 at 11:04 am

TADOne says:
I was watching the Bulls/Blazers game into the 3rd quarter, got bored on it, and went to sleep. I thought the way the Blazers were playing to that point that the Bulls would end up pulling away. No I wish I would have stayed awake. The Blazers young guys are certainly growing and showing more resilancy as the season rolls on.

Jan.4 at 11:04 am

Hisham says:
Yeah maybe you should have.. But i’m very much into freedom of vulgar speech but that’s just my taste, haha. It was something like “hey i did this to your moms on the stairs and the kitchen table” and “yeah i did it to yours through the back entrance, you ass*ole” and then Ryan said something like: “Ass*ole, what a funny place to put an asterisk”. That had me rolling that’s all. See i relived it anyway. You can delete this if you want.

Jan.4 at 11:05 am

white hot eboy says:
Hisham, there was no exchange, just a single response comment from me.

Jan.4 at 11:07 am

white hot eboy says:
“Through the back entrance”? Is that the way the Dutch call for a back door play to be run?

Jan.4 at 11:08 am

TADOne says:
Funny thing is, that guy hasn’t been back since.

Jan.4 at 11:08 am

Hisham says:
Can’t wait to see what Oden brings next season. And I would love to see the Blazers put fear in the hearts of the Mavs come playoff time. Two first round knockouts in a row would be lovely. Can you tell I don’t like Dallas?

Jan.4 at 11:09 am

Holly MacKenzie says:
Tad, it was exciting. I had the game on as I was starting recapping and I thought it sucked that they were down 14 in the third. Got bored as well, looked up and got to see them charge back and make a great game of it. The exciting part is watching these young guys grow with each game. I enjoyed hearing Jack miked up as well. Their team chemistry is great and listening to Roy’s post game interview, they are all about buying in to the team game and they just want to win.

Jan.4 at 11:09 am

BETCATS says:
good morning everybody

Jan.4 at 11:10 am

holly says:
seems so dude

Jan.4 at 11:11 am

Hisham says:
Haha I was just trying to be civil, Eboy.. Oh, and you probably didn’t catch that one, but the guy came back at you in a different thread.. Haven’t seen him since, either

Jan.4 at 11:13 am

white hot eboy says:
I saw it Hisham, I SEE ALL!!!!!

Jan.4 at 11:13 am

Holly MacKenzie says:
I love Avery, Stack and Josh Howard but I would LOVE a Blazer upset. Unless of course, it is coming at the hands of the Suns, but that is another story. Actually, I’d just be proud of a young team for silencing their doubter’s so Portland upsetting anyone would be okay with me.

Jan.4 at 11:14 am

TADOne says:
So everyone here thinks the Blazers are playoff bound?

Jan.4 at 11:15 am

Tarzan Cooper says:
zzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Jan.4 at 11:15 am

holly says:
not again.this year´s different for the mavs.i think they learned from it,hopefully

Jan.4 at 11:16 am

white hot eboy says:
Tad, they should be able to pull it off.

Jan.4 at 11:16 am

TADOne says:
Different for the Mavs?? Not too sure about that. They seem more unsure of themselves this season than in any of their past 5, IMO.

Jan.4 at 11:18 am

TADOne says:
I agree Eboy, just wanted everyone’s take. I see the Blazers confidence growing with each win. And Chicago has been playing good ball of late, so that was no small win.

Jan.4 at 11:19 am

BETCATS says:
i think they are gonna be a bigger one hit wonder than J-Kwon (nobody is gettin tipsy in the club anymore J) and that when GO comes back so does losing the chemistry and rotation this squad has.

Jan.4 at 11:21 am

white hot eboy says:
Tad, plus I find it so unfair that a player like Greg Oden get’s an injury to end his rookie season while a useless fuc*ing moron like Joakim Noah gets to play cheerleader in a uniform while barely making a dent in his teams effort.

Jan.4 at 11:24 am

Tarzan Cooper says:
damn, if you’re that upset at noah; who knows what you think of the heat.

Jan.4 at 11:25 am

white hot eboy says:
If you were the real Tarzan, you would know my feelings, wannabe vine swinger.

Jan.4 at 11:25 am

Hisham says:
Oden’s time will come, Eboy. Next year, he’ll be a rookie with some experience in NBA life, so he’ll probably be able to adjust faster. Which hopefully means beastliness right from the start.

Jan.4 at 11:25 am

holly says:
noah had a great impact on 2 college titles.give him some time

Jan.4 at 11:27 am

Tarzan Cooper says:
maybe the heat will draft mike beastly

Jan.4 at 11:28 am

BETCATS says:
andrew bynum > greg oden

Jan.4 at 11:28 am

Tarzan Cooper says:
real holly, jack should be miked up every night, captain jack that is.

Jan.4 at 11:29 am

white hot eboy says:
That bitch had little impact, holly, he just got lots of camera time for acting like an overdramtic as*hole when he would make one of his three plays a game. Plus he has a famous father which is always a good story for moron fans to watch while not paying attention to the actual game.

Jan.4 at 11:31 am

BETCATS says:
am i being ignored or is it just me?

Jan.4 at 11:31 am

Hisham says:
holly please change your name. Can’t eboy hook you up with one? have a good weekend you guys!

Jan.4 at 11:31 am

white hot eboy says:
It’s just you.

Jan.4 at 11:32 am

white hot eboy says:
Hisham, that’s like foreplay without completion, why so quick man?

Jan.4 at 11:33 am

QQ says:
lol, but yeah, Bynum > Oden. But D. Howard > Bynum and everyone else.

Jan.4 at 11:33 am

Hisham says:
BETCATS you’re right about JKwon, and andrew bynum > greg oden is accurate now, but won’t be in a couple years. Peace! keep it coming with the goofy comments though, i’m a fan ever since the warriors preview

Jan.4 at 11:33 am

white hot eboy says:
Real Holly, have you checked out part 2 of my blog piece yet?

Jan.4 at 11:34 am

Holly MacKenzie says:
I thought you were talking about J Jack, Eboy, but you were talking Noah, right? Tarzan, I’d pay per game for Jax to be miked up. There’s a youtube vid of him at practice with the mike on. He is one of my most favorite players, hands down. Bet, I see you.

Jan.4 at 11:34 am

TADOne says:
No one is fitting the Blazers for ings or anything, Betcats. But I think everyone has seen enough to predict that they could possibly make the playoffs this season. No one can say what they nay do once they get there, but it is exciting to watch them overachieve.

Jan.4 at 11:35 am

TADOne says:
*ings=rings

Jan.4 at 11:37 am

Yes, Noah, Holly.

Jan.4 at 11:37 am

Eboy, I’m going to check it out myself, but it looks a bit long. I’ll wait till we get a lil slower at work.

Jan.4 at 11:39 am

Holly MacKenzie says:
I haven’t yet, Eboy. I will as soon as I take a break from some writing I’ve got to get done!

Jan.4 at 11:39 am

white hot eboy says:
Yeah, nothing ever seems to stay short. I need an editor on staff.

I’ve been pretty impressed by Joe Smith lately. But like Chuck said last night, if Joe Smith is your best post player….things don’t look good. What would Joe Smith be in Detroit, the fourth big off the bench?

is that out to me dude?????

Cheryl says:
To answer someone’s question about the Heat’s pick–I think folks are talking about Rose for the Heat. I think they should try to get a big, if there’s a talanted one in the first round. Center and point will be our biggest holes, I think. Can’t believe I’m looking forward to NEXT season! :-(

Jan.4 at 12:20 pm

Candice says:
Great game from Ai. Didn’t pratice all week cause his youngest son needed plastic surgery from a fall.

It’s karma for your jump off, Cheryl.

Jan.4 at 12:29 pm

Cheryl says:
I was pushed…
Psyche. why you keep saying I jumped. I never jumped, I just strayed a little. I can’t help it if I like GOOD basketball. :-)

Jan.4 at 12:30 pm

Holly MacKenzie says:
While I was relieved to hear that Ivy’s son is going to be okay and I would never wish that situation on anyone, it was funny to read all of the articles that started out, “Practice? Allen Iverson doesn’t need it” ahahaahah. favorite nba press conference EVER.

Jan.4 at 12:33 pm

white hot eboy says:
Cheryl, I think if us two aren’t full bore in our support, the team is doomed. Right now, I’m happy for the Blazers and keeping an eye on my true West pick, the Nuggets. What else is there for a loser fan like me to do?

Jan.4 at 12:37 pm

TADOne says:
Yeah, that was crazy about Ivy’s son. Pretty serious fall when plastic surgery is required. I’m glad he is better and Ivy is not bummed out about it.

Jan.4 at 12:37 pm

Cheryl says:
I read your post, by the way. Really liked it. When you gonna put up the next one? I know it’s hard to find the time to sit down and get it the way you want it. I’m working on one I’ve had in draft form for 3 weeks. I just don’t want to “pile on” my team right now, but I think I have an interesting perspective about what’s happening with them, though.

Jan.4 at 12:38 pm

TADOne says:
Eboy/Cheryl, do you think Riley is still considering trade options at this point?

Jan.4 at 12:44 pm

Cheryl says:
Don’t think he’ll do anything right now, honestly. We could use the expiring contracts of JWill and Ricky as much as any other team out there. At this point he seems to be trying to see who’s in it for the long haul and who has fight in them. The off season will be an interesting one.

Jan.4 at 12:44 pm

white hot eboy says:
Yes, TAD. Cheryl, I’ve been waiting on your piece for a hot minute. Please get it done. I hope to have my last part done in a week or so.

Jan.4 at 12:57 pm

TADOne says:
Thing is, at this point, what exactly is Riley trying to accomplish in a trade? I think Cheryl is spot on about the expiring contracts doing the Heat just as good as a team that would consider trading for them. I’m just not sure who the Heat could trade for at this point that would make them better beyond this season.

Jan.4 at 1:37 pm

Phil B says:
bynum is only better than oden this season because oden is out for injury. i’ll take oden over bynum when they are both healthy any day.

Jan.4 at 2:01 pm

The Cool says:
Bynum will take a crap on oden. play wit it.

Jan.4 at 4:19 pm

Phil B says:
play with the crap that bynum takes on oden? no thanks. but back to basketball, i really don’t see how you think bynum will be better than oden… unless oden comes back as a shell of his former self or worse. just from the oden i saw in college, he’s twice as good as bynum this year.

Jan.7 at 5:28 pm

ciolkstar says:
Was oden playing in the L last year? Oh yeah, that was in COLLEGE. Bynum has more athleticism than Oden will ever have and has great hands. Bynum is doing it big in the WEST to boot. I predict Oden will be a strong defender but offensively, at best he’ll be like Yao without the jumpshot. (Slow footed, awkward at times…) Plus homeboy looks to have some advanced aging symdrome, not to mention one of his legs is shorter than the other. Get used to seeing Oden i expensive suits and Bynums catching alley-oops.
