Damon Wants Out of Memphis

by Marcel Mutoni

At 9-22, the Memphis Grizzlies aren’t going anywhere this year. In what has turned out to be a disappointing season under new head coach Marc Iavaroni, Memphis has made the decision to develop its youngsters by giving them more playing time. Specifically, first round draft pick Mike Conley.

Conley’s promotion to the starting lineup, though, isn’t sitting well with veteran point guard Damon Stoudamire. Angered by what he perceives as a slap in the face, Damon wants to be on the first thing smoking (no pun intended) out of town.

“For the Grizzlies to demote Damon because of his age and because of the team’s record is unacceptable,” Agent Aaron Goodwin said.

“They’re going to have to do right by Damon — move to get him out of there or restructure his contract so he can be bought out. Mr. Heisley is a good, compassionate man. But we’re not going to sit back and watch Damon’s career rot.”

Luckily for Damon Stoudamire, team owner Michael Heisley seems to like him, and promises to do his best to find him a new home. Get on that phone, Danny Ainge!

Yeah, Danny Ainge needs to be ON that… I’d suggest the Raps get him because of TJ Ford’s boo-boo, but he’d throw off that situation…and he’s sorta expensive

Damon Stoudamire still plays basketball? Wow. You learn something new everyday.

Spark an L and chill, Damon. There are bigger injustices in the world (and the L, for that matter).

Wrap his career in tin foil. It’s over.

Russ Bengtson says:
Boston can’t do a trade for Damon–they have three players making a combined $55 million, it’s not like they have many pieces after that (would Memphis really take Brian Scalabrine?). Portland could get it done if they didn’t mind bringing him back, and if Memphis would take Darius Miles or Raef LaFrentz.

no one needs Damon. Which means he’ll probably be playing in New York. He would mess Boston’s whole program up. Maybe he could backup Nash?

After having lived in Memphis for several years, I can honestly say I’m glad to have new blood at that position. I really haven’t liked a grizz pg since J-Dub left.

Damon may actually be a good fit back in Portland. He is from there and would give them a good backup PG. Besides, the Blazers need to jettison Miles so that they don’t poison the chemistry they have.

Captain America says:
D-Miles is radioactive. Damon has a reasonable contract that expires after next season. He’ll get picked up but unlikely with a winning club.

Why not Damon to Miami for JWill and other contracts?

Go back one even further than Portland…why not bring Damon back to Toronto???
Although I am a Raps fan, I wasn’t too caught up with the way Mighty Mouse left us - it was business at the time. But now, the opportunity in TOR seems good given than TJ’s return is iffy and Jose can only sustain so many minutes for so long. Plus, the Raptor’s record and direction this season is much brighter (especially in the east) than Memphis’

I said it before… If he can come in and get 15 - 20 quality as the waiter for the “3 leaved shamrock”, they might have to order a trophy case in Boston.

I love how a player who has f*cked around the majority of his career feels entitled to sh*t because he’s starting to feel old. Damon and Goodwin have been watching his career rot for the last 7 years. I’m not gonna feel bad for a guy who’s making seven digits in the tail end of his career sitting behind the young buck who took his job. That’s life.

@ Bryant Reeves: Riles is probably already on the phone.

urgh…give him to houston, we seem to like our overrated expensive guards who cant contribute consistently, james (old, trigger-happy, cant even be called one-dimensional, thats an overstatement on a 5+million contract), brooks (rookie, but with impressive potential), stevie (im not gonna go there), what is Luther Head?, skip (the best, omg heart attack houston) last year he played like 40 minutes every night. my teams season is going down the drain…. PLEASE let Yao beat Howard, we can beat orlando in every other area.

Damon needs to head to ATL. The Hawks need a point guard. Sorry Anthony Johnson, a point guard you are not.

why is damon stoudemire still playing, while penny hardaway can’t even get a reserve spot on a team, memphis should drop damon and pick up penny

Celtics don’t need stoudamire. Tony Allen can run point and stoudamire couldn’t run a big offense.

Im surprised no one said send him to the lakers

That would mean Memphis would have to buy out Damon for the remaining year and a half on his contract, they might as well try and get some value for him.
