Baron’s All-Star Chances
It’s worth noting that, following his epic first round Playoff performance against Dallas last summer, many skeptics shrugged and said, “That was great, but can he keep it up, and even more importantly, how long can he stay healthy?” Baron Davis has responded by having the best season of his career, and the man with a history of injuries has been something of an ironman along the way.
If you’ve caught any Warriors games this season, particulary in the fourth quarter, an All-Star nomination for B-Diddy seems like the most obvious thing in the world. But it’s not, especially in that brutally competitive Western Conference.
“He certainly deserves to (be an All-Star), and his numbers will speak for themselves,” Warriors coach Don Nelson said. “And our record is good enough that he should be considered by anybody. I would hope that he makes it … But hey, there’s a lot of competition. Somebody always gets left out that’s deserving.”
Coach Nelson, I presume, is talking about Chris Paul and Steve Nash, two guys having themselves outstanding seasons as well. Through no fault of his own, Baron could end up watching the mid-season classic on television like many of us, and that’s a shame.

If Baron Davis isn’t an all-star they need to take the voting out of the hands of the fans for real.

Mike C says:
Yeah, but who should he replace?
Kobe? Nash? CP3? AI?
Baron’s good, but I’d much rather see the four I mentioned over him.

jbn74sb says:
He shoots less than 42%, and averages about 3 turnovers per game. He shoots 34% from 3, but for some reason launches over 6 per game. And his FT% of 76% (the second best of his career) is mediocre at best for a guard. Exciting player? Yes. Clutch performer? Yes. All Star in the West? Doubtful.
Jan.9 at 1:22 pm
Bryan says:
First of all the numbers are good. Second, what about the intangibles he brings?
Jan.9 at 1:34 pm
jbn74sb says:
Less than 42% is good? 34% on over 6 3’s a game is good? 76% FT for a guard is good?Intangibles? So Shane Battier is an All-Star?
Jan.9 at 1:39 pm
Bryan says:
No one complained when Allen Iverson shot 40 percent or Jason Kidd shooting 36 percent.
Jan.9 at 1:42 pm
jbn74sb says:
Yes, they did. And AI dropped 30 a night, as opposed to Baron’s pedestrian 22.
Jan.9 at 1:53 pm
Bryan says:
pedestrian? are you on drugs? 22 points 8 assists and 2+ steals are not pedestrian numbers dude.
Jan.9 at 1:53 pm
Jukai says:
Well, let’s say both wildcards are guards for the west… he’s gotta make it over Deron, Nash, McGrady (who will be voted in), Kobe, AI, Paul, Ginobli… all guards who are having incredible seasons. It’s possible but it’ll be tough.

Mike says:
I wish the all-star game could just be for the most exciting players. I don’t want to watch players like Yao and Dirk with no imagination out there. Baron should make it because that is his game. Remember the one time marbury was an all-star, he finished off the game with two three’s in Kidd’s face to win by one.

riggs says:
16 is pedestrian, 22 is not even close.

Wow, if 22 is pedestrian, we have quite a few “pedestrian” players in the NBA.

Diddy has the type of game that makes the All Star game fun to watch, ridiculous handle, insane dimes, and he can get buckets at will. Can’t really say CP-3 has the same bag of tricks, even though he is a dope PG.

Ron says:
Hopefully T-Mac will give up his starting spot and it will allow someone who really deserves it to play. The problem is that the guard spots are still a crowed bunch. Kobe, AI, Nash, CP3, Roy, B Diddy, Manu, and TP are all worthy of being on the squad. Too bad only 5 of them will make it. And becuase all the chinese fans vote for Rocket players T-Mac will have one of those 5 spots.
Jan.9 at 2:36 pm
jbn74sb says:
Pedestrian as compared to 30. Look, Baron is a good player, but his game presents a lot of problems to his own team, since he is the point guard. He is reckless, shoots way too much for someone with his shooting percentage, and jacks up 3s at a ridiculous pace for someone with his percentage. If you are going to be a volume shooter (such as Kobe or Iverson), you d-mn well better average more than 22 points per game.
Jan.9 at 2:40 pm
TADOne says:
How many average 30?? I’ll wait.
Jan.9 at 2:48 pm
TADOne says:
Regardless, he still averages 8 dimes a game. He plays with scorers also like Jax, Monta, And Azubuike. Now, I’m not saying he should definitely be an all star, because the West is stacked with good guards. I’m just saying he definitely is in the discussion.
Jan.9 at 2:55 pm
Jukai says:
I think he deserves it. It should be Kobe, Nash, Baron, Paul and Roy (I can’t believe I forgot about Roy…) but cause McGrady has it, you know, you gotta balance it out now.

anyone that is gon’ get left off the roster is gon’ be pissed cuz all of the guys mentioned deserve to make it. it’s gon’ be the coaches deciding in the end who makes it. Anyone that chooses B. Diddy or Brandon R.O.Y. over Iverson, like some ESPN writer, is definitely high on smth.

How about TP, isn’t TP in? Guys is going to win yet another championship with TD and the Spurs. Got to put him in front of B-Davis

Michaelbchnn says:
Baron doesn’t have a shot in hell. He’s having a really good year but the gaurd position in the west has become even deeper than the forward position in the West. Kobe and T-mac are locks for the starting spots(even though T-mac doesn’t deserve it. Then you have chris paul and steve nash getting the backups. Which means theres a real possibility that Iverson could miss the All-Star game as well which is a travesty.

In Regards to your last comment bodie, ima just say two words: NELLIE BALL. come on man lets be serious the reason he does all of that is because nellie not only lets him (and them) get away with it, he encourages it.

Kadavour says:
Baron or Ginobili should have that fifth spot in the ASG. Kobe, Nash, CP3 and AI are automatic picks. everyone already said it, All Star West has been pretty locked up at the guard spot for the last couple years.

jbn74sb - problems to his own team!? Do you not think the Warriors success has something to do with their point guard? Truth is more than one deserving West guard will be watching the game from the sidelines.

Young Chris #3 says:
And Kobe will most likely start, but for reserves, Stever Nash, Chris Paul, A.I. and Brandon Roy (dude HAS to get in, right?). But for B-Diddy or Deron Williams over any of those guys? Not so much. The only way either of them make it is if Tracy no-shows.

god this is a tough one, it just goes to show how admirable the west his, the guards superior, nash, paul, baron, parker, deron, roy, hell iverson, maybe even terry, monta possibly(doubt it’ll happen) but still im glad im 16 and young rite now to watch these guys, but yea, baron, its gonna be tough, but honestly, no dis to my favorite pg steve nash, and i honestly think nash is the best player in the L, but Baron has been the best pg and maybe player in the 4th quarter wen it comes to taking tuff shots, and hitting them, when they need it. Baron i hope u make it this year, but again, so many people who are deserving, and some are going to be heartbroken, but thats the way the ball bounces sometimes, wether u like it…or not.

As a fan I love the game and what all star weekend is meant to represent. That being said, I think it’s time to take away the fan selection of the starters. This is not american idol, I want the best players to start in the game, not the most liked players. I like McGrady, but he doesn’t deserve to start in the asg, hell he doesn’t even deserve to be on the west squad. There are so many guys having better seasons than him. Yet because millions in China get to see the Rockets play frequently they vote for Tracy. I almost hope he doesn’t heal from his injusries just so that someone more deserving can take his spot on the team.

jbn74sb says:
What success? They snuck into the playoffs last year, beat a team in the first round whose best player has a giant hairy vagine, and promptly got dusted by Utah.
Let Baron string together a couple of productive, effecient, healthy seasons before you start sucking each other’s popsicles.

And while you’re at it, compare Baron’s stats to Steve Nash’s, including percentages.
Jan.9 at 4:44 pm
Young Chris #3 says:
sjeeezy, I won’t diss you for saying Baron’s the best in the 4th quarter, but you must be on crack to claim Nash is the best player in the league! KB24, A.I., KG, Duncan, Pierce, CP3, Lebron… If Dwyane Wade were healthy, him too… Damn shoulder injuries…

I find it quite amusing how quick people are to call Dirk a punk or a vagina behind the comfort of their computer w/o him even knowing who said sh*t talkers are specifically. I wonder how that would play out if someone called him this while he was out in public.
Jan.9 at 9:11 pm
Jukai says:
Honestly, I’d put Brandon Roy and Chris Paul and Baron Davis over Steve Nash and Tony Parker and Allen Iverson. The latter are working with a bunch of other all-stars to do well in this league, the former are leading their teams pretty much on their own.
Jan.9 at 9:43 pm
GM who overpays says:
He should get one of the reserve spots.
There’s 12 guys picked right?
5 starters (2g,2f,1c), 5 reserves by position (2g, 2f, 1c), and 2 wildcards. So with Kobe and Tracy being voted in as the guards that leaves at most 4 spots for guards (the 2g reserves and 2 wildcards). I’d say Nash and Paul are ahead of Baron and maybe Roy with what Portland is doing but I’d have Baron in. It would leave Ginobili, Parker, AI and Deron Williams out.
The forwards are Duncan and Carmello (voted in) with Boozer, Dirk, J. Howard, Marion and some more up for the 2 reserve spots and wildcards.
The voting is screwing this up cause McGrady shouldn’t even be in this game this year. Sucks for Baron. In a contract year too lol. Too bad the west is still loaded with guards even though guys are running (or wanting to run) to the east.
Jan.9 at 9:44 pm
Glen says:
Wow, when did the West’s guards get so good?
For a while it was the East was the guards and the West was the forwards… Plus the West has Kevin Martin, who could be in the discussion if he hadn’t gotten injured. Martin was averaging 24 on something like 16 attempts per game
Jan.9 at 9:58 pm
bootlace says:
If Ginobili makes it over these guys someone needs to get their brain checked. I dont care how efficient his stats are, he plays for the world champs and comes off the bench spending alot of time squaring off against the opposite teams’ second unit or tired starters that TP and TD wore down. Baron? He’s relied on to carry he’s maniac of a team in the clutch with all eyes on him like Mr. Shakur. And jbn74sp: get your head out of the stats books man and watch some actual games, your comments are ridiculous.

I’d call Dirk out in public, and he’d look the other way and keep walking. If he doesn’t want it with 6′4 post defenders, he definitely doesn’t want it with me. LOL. He is NOT winning a ring as the franchise player - ever. Not hating, just stating facts.

man as a warriors fan for my entire life of 22 years, BARON IS GOD…. as great as his stats are across the board to a casual observer, he is our savior… everyone jumped on our bandwagon when we became the story of the league and the funnest team to watch… well guess what were back! no were not 23 and 9 like a san antonio or a phoenix but hell, were 5 games over 500 and have played one of the 3 toughest schedules in the league (thats a stat not an opinion!) were going back to the playoffs and as much as i love monta, jack, andris and the rest of the guys, it is because of BARON DAVIS… everyone says, “yeah but if you take baron look who you have to leave off…” reverse it, you cant leave baron off this year’s all star team because he is the epitome of an all star if you’ve ever seen him play….. oh and for JBN74 check barons numbers from their overtime win over san antonio monday: 34 points, 14 assists, 5 rebounds, 0 turnovers… cmon get real people

Agreed with Harlem world. Common sense says Nash, CP3, Kobe, AI. But there will be injuries. So in this case, it’s Baron or TP. Baron for sentimentality. TP for reason. As a coach, I would go for TP. As a fan, for Baron.
Jan.10 at 10:51 am
Crook says:
The Baron has been an All-Star caliber player for years and now that the team is winning people are looking at him as if this is new. Yes he has had injuries and has still out played most of the All-Star gaurds he has faced. He has and is clutch. He is on a no market team so the uneducated “fans” vote for names and not who is worthy. Arenas who hasn’t played has more votes than Davis. - Boston is Back!

All Star 08 nods says:
Guys like Kobe and Iverson ARE the All-Star game, players like them are what that game is all about. I think some short-minded fans get spoiled by watching some of these players and because they perform at a high level and get the stats EVERY year, fans forget that what they do is not an easy thing to achieve. So just because somebody has a breakout season or putting up decent numbers this year doesn’t mean they deserve a spot over the SUPERSTAR players in the league that do the same thing year in and year out. Just the fact that there are two or three people suggesting that a player like Iverson might miss the all-star game this year just proves my point. I know the West is deep, but they’re not that deep where a Megastar NBA player like Iverson misses the game, a guy that would/should be starting if it wasn’t for Tracy Mcgrady benifiting from being Yaos teammate. I checked some of these players stats and Iverson is quietly having one of the best seasons out of the majority of the starters in both east and west. So if he should miss the game… then EVERYONE should miss it. He also is one of the top selling jerseys at the All-Star games, so how are you not going to have him there, thats just flat out retarded. I agree with everyone that says Iverson and Nash are locks as back-ups (which they should be not only based off their seasons and what they mean to their teams but the fact that they are 3rd and 4th in fan voting in the gaurd positions right behind Tracy and Kobe). Chris Paul should be the ‘new kid’ on the block and should make it based off his breakout season and the fact that the game is in New Orleans. And I feel like Baron Davis should make it over Roy, TP and Manu. I feel like Baron is underrated and he is also a player that is tailor made for the All Star games. I would actually rather see him there over Chris Paul, but we’ll see. Hopefully both of them will make it. As far as Tracy Mcgrady goes, I remember him saying last year that if the game went to New Orleans that he would’nt want to go because of security reasons, he didn’t think it would be safe. So maybe he should be a man of his word and stay at home so someone more deserving can be there. I like Tracy but i’m just saying, he knows good and well he doesn’t deserve to be at that game this year, that extra spot can go to Baron Davis or Brandon Roy right there.
