Why?

Russ Bengtson says:
I thought it was three years with an opt-out clause after the third? Although I guess that means he’s out after two regardless, and he’ll finally be unrestricted. I’d love to be there when he rejoins his teammates.

Russ Bengtson says:
And eboy–why is easy. The Cavs need what he brings, and they’re not gonna find it from anyone else for $5.5 million a year. Not at this point in the season. And Andy has to play well no matter what team he’s on if he wants that big payday in ‘10.

so Varejao didn’t want 20 mill for 3 yrs and chose 11 over 2 yrs? :/ does he think he’s ever gonna average more than 10/10 a game ever?

Gross tonage check?

Russ Bengtson says:
I think Andy is under the delusion (a popular one amongst pro athletes) that someone will offer him a max contract as soon as he’s unrestricted. So the sooner he can be an unrestricted free agent, the better. That’s how I understand it anyway.

I think the Cavs played this thing out correctly. 11mil for 2 years is about market value right?

I think the Cavs scored on this one. Yeah, Varejeo’s annoying as hell, but if he was on my team, I bet I’d love the guy. He’s like super-Eduardo-Najera. The hold-on was pretty weak, but the Cavs should be happy.

hold-on = hold-out. The rest stands.

So let’s review for those of you watching at home. For his trouble, Varejao gets less money than originally offered, but hey, at least he didn’t miss any playing time or alienate himself to fans, manager and teammates, right? Fegan looks like a schmuck for getting nowhere near the money he was after, but at least he has a chance to save face in two years if AV gets a new contract for mucho dinero, and you can bet the farm he’ll try like hell. Ferry got the most out of a situation where the player / agent were way unreasonable (two years of fully-motivated, decent-earning AV), and has to be commended for not giving in to ridiculous demands. And the Charlotte GM looks like an idiot. I’m still trying to figure out what dirt Fegan has on him.

yo, varejao is such a good player at the four position. he deservse to be in a better team than the bobcats and the cavaliers. he needs to be in a team who really need a big man, like the lakers or the sixers. but in my position he should go to orlando and orlando should waive adonal foyle.

Dec.5 at 12:17 pm

Jared says:
he doesn’t deserve to be on a bad team like the cavs…but should be on the sixers…crack? And they can’t just wave a player to pick up another one, this isn’t a video game…do you know how much money they’d have to give to their veteran leader adonal foyle? About a billion dollars.

Well first of all, Varejao’s offer sheet from the ‘Cats has been matched, and secondly, he would have helped Charlotte tremendously.

The Best Yet says:
Varejao aint helping NOBODY. It’s only now that LBJ is out that dude think he can “prove” his worth. That 6 and 6 line will surely get that $10M deal soon.
Stupid a$$hole. Hope his fat a$$ ready to play.

Dan says:
Clearly Best Yet is more a fan of one-on-one streetball than team basketball. Do you even understand what value a role player like Varejao brings to a team? I am not saying that he is worth $10 million/season, but his energy, defense, and charges that he draws are worth more than the $1+ million that he was initially offered. Looks like you are the stupid a$$hole after all.

Yawwnnnn. This guy has to be the worst player to ever hold out this long.

Varejao is an NBA Live performer and that’s all that really matters

Dec.5 at 5:28 pm

Brian says:
Dan, you are completely wrong on this one. Varejao was originally offered a 3 year, 20 million dollar contract, which is more than he is worth. Varejao turned it down because he did not want to be locked into that long of a contract. As such, the Cavs essentially said to that, “Sure, you want an easy out contract? We’ll give you the 1 year contract you want, for 1.2 million.” He balked and then walked out. Now he is signing for 3 years (with a possible opt-out after 2) for 17 million, or as rumored elsewhere, 2 years for 11 million outright, depending on what you want to believe. Varejao was not done wrong by the Cavs, and I’m not a Cavs fan. Varejao created his own bed to lie in.

VareJao is their best role player. And top role players deserve the $ they are instrumental to a team. Try having a superstar and no role player? see what happens.
