Rockets Show Yao They’re Not Soft
Following a deflating two-game losing streak to Toronto and Philly, the normally kind and philosophical Yao Ming tore into his team. Chairman Yao accused his guys of being soft, which is akin to walking up to a ballplayer and slapping him across the face.
Against the Pistons last night, Houston wouldn’t allow itself to get pushed around and got a big home win.
With the scored tied at 61, Wells went face-to-face with Pistons center Rasheed Wallace after a hard foul. After Wallace offered the unsolicited advice not to venture into the lane again with that type of offering, Wells responded with a chest bump.
Both players earned technical fouls, and the crowd launched into a “Bonzi, Bonzi” chant. Fans, after all, don’t want to bear the guilt of association with a soft team.
The Rockets are impossible to figure out: They have all of the talent in the world, they play defense, and are led by a pretty damn good coach. So why can’t they put it all together?
Thoughts, as always, are welcome in the comments below.

Because the damn fool of Adelman doesn´t play Scola a ton more minutes!

Rasheedionics says:
No point guard. Last night Yao was posting down low and getting good positions and instead of getting him the ball someone would just drive to the hoop and throw up a circus shot. They need someone who knows how and when to pass the ball.

Because they DON’T have a good coach. Sacremento shoulda gone a helluva lot farther and now so should Houston.

i think everyone forgets this team has changed a lot since Rudy T was here. Even though some things were consistent (Yao/steve or yao /tmac), they have gone through 3 coaches with completely different philosophies, the role players have changed, injuries have kept Yao and tmac out in the past, all that keeps them from really building on anything over the years, they have a chance to finally settle in this season, but they need another 2-3 weeks to get this offense down

they havent been able to build on their past years because they have changed coaches/playing styles 3 times since Yao was here, as well as role players and injuries to Yao/tmac, this year they can finally settle down but its going to take them another 2-3 weeks to adapt to this new style of play

I think the coaching is good, Adelman has good assistants and enough veterans to have good leadership/motivation, I think a good PG automatically takes them to the second best team behind SA in the league, like rasheedionis said they do have trouble controlling the tempo/momentum, guys like nash/CP/kidd/tp etc, they know what buttons to push and when.

Rasheedionics says:
They should trade Mike James, Rafer Alston, Steve Francis and their other 12 poing guards for Andre Miller…

Agree with Rasheed - poor point play. But is it me or couldn’t the Rockets go after Kidd, they have plenty of depth maybe give up someone from the bunch: Wells, Alston, James, Hayes, Battier, Head, whoever else is on the rooster. As long as they keep Yao, Tracy and maybe Scola..
Dunno if Nets would be interested though..
Thoughts please!

Cause TMac chokes, coach can’t coach, no 3rd option, PG’s suck. Did I leave anything out?

having watched all these games this year, i’d say the “point play” assesment is accurate. Rafer can’t shoot, james and francis can’t set up the offense. Coaching is not so much an issue…it’s just that the starters have been slow transitioning from iso-based gundy blal to a prnceton/triangle/motion offense. T-mac and yao both have a tendancy to hold the ball and let the defense adjust. Ther’ll be 3 or 4 moments in a game where the people/ball movement looks beautiful, and 10 or 15 more when the offense is a completely premeditated “yao on the left block” or “t-mac on the elbow” play. Hopefully it’ll come in time.

It is not poor play by the point guard. Rasheedionics…The point guard is not the player that passes to the low post, it is the wing players. Check their record without Alston this year, in two of the games without Alston they had their lowest assist totals as a team. I’m not necessarily praising skip to my lou, but he doesn’t deserve the blame.

Allenp says:
I agree with whoever said they need a point guard who can consistently make post entry passes and hit open jumpers. Currently, they do not have one, plus their two best players are finesse guys who settle for jumpers.

Aren’t Bonzi and Rasheed close friends. Rasheed was right, the NBA is turning into the WWF.

its early in the season, the first season for the coaches and players. it takes a lil time. spurs would disagree with the assessment that tmac is a choker.

Get Mike James and Francis the hell out of there…useless…Rafer did great for them last season…i don’t understand the need for those two chumps..its not like they’ve made a impact…

Chukaz says:
Yao callin’ his team soft? That’s sad if you are the Rockets. When one of the softest centers in the history of the league calls you soft, you are as soft as it gets.
Dec.13 at 8:49 pm
Chukaz says:
Pat, you are f’n stupid, man. The Rockets should stop playin’ Rafer so much and put Steve Francis out there some more. Francis could be that f*ckin’ 3rd option thy f*ckin’ need so f*ckin’ much. Damn you Rick Adelman.

rafer did not play great for them last year, his shooting has been horrible since last yr, he’s solid when it comes to defense/steals, low turnovers, but thats it. Francis, i think, has done great, he’s stayed within his abilities and would be great as our full time back up.
Dec.13 at 9:18 pm
bootlace says:
Chukaz should be the Houston coach. 1) Yao IS the softest player in the L, and 2) Rafer definitely needs to skip to the bench.

J-22 says:
I agree with the skip comments, he shoots 0 for 29 from three every game!!! I know it’s right to take the open j but when you shoot worse than D-Miles (anyone remember him) you should just pass the ball dawg

Have yall not seen the last 10 games or so? Yao isn’t soft anymore, he isn’t Shaq, but then who is, but he’s not laying it up anymore. He’s had several throw downs lately, not tipping shots, but swatting them, bumping guys off, he’ll never be mean, but he aint soft anymore either.

Simone Lawy says:
Da softy YAO, lots of guys think yao was good enough, a no1 center[ chinese do think so] , but he’s ain’t that good, he can’t make his teammate better, he can’t win a game by himself , without t-mac. 2 years ago, shaq was 33, but he still can win a game by himself without FLASH, he can make his teammate better even win a title….now that’s a center, maybe he’s 35 now, but i still believe he got something left. Shaq was Great and Yao was just a good player.

Hursty says:
Battier is the glue guy, like Bowen (also a high-quality defender) and very intelligent. Scola is scrappy and the hustle dude. Yeh T-Mac had a big dunk last night, hes still got some hops huh. come on, Yao has only been in the league for 5 years.

yall need to quit hating on rafer his shooting hasnt been as bad this year as hes taken less shots and has been fairly ok, hes the only one of the rockes pg’s that can get anything set up, t-mac takes enough shots for everyone! till francis is fit enough and can actually do somthing on the court or they give brooks a run then rafer is starter hands down!

Yao needs to touch the ball on damn near every posession and Stevee needs to stop being scared.
Can’t have a 7′5′’ guy running up down without seeing the ball for long stretches. It’s not like he’s David Lee or sth (who goes out and gets his own ball).
And when Scola gets into the game - make him your first option.

Ummm…steve francis isn’t stevie franchise anymore…by no means is he a third option…whats goin on with mike james? He should be playing better, dudes a ball player.

this may sound cliche, but truth of the matter is this, t-mac u are a superb athlete, but please, for all of us, for your god damn team, STOP SHOOTING 400 TIMES A GAME. i know he scored 13pts in 20 somn seconds, but man, his field goal percentage is sickening to look at, he needs to play the team game, u cant just tell a guy like that, oh pass the ball tracy, he has too much talent, too utilize that talent, he has got to play the inside out game with yao, and until then, this team will be. P.S. this team has the potential to have a duo like shaq and kobe, but if t-mac doesnt settle down, all hope is lost.
Dec.14 at 10:16 pm
RV says:
his FG % is 45%, there’s nothing sickening about that, kobe is also at 45%, so is carter, and so is rashard lewis, guys like that will never shoot 50% consistently because they aren’t post players and dont rely on penetration (TP). they are who they are because they can shoot all sorts of jumpers from all over, including last second low % shots, which makes their FG% worse by about 2 shots at least a game…
