Phil Jackson Wants Some Privacy
Starting tonight, on TNT, we the viewers will get to hear coaches rant and rave in the locker room before and during games. Coaches will also be asked to wear tiny microphones throughout the games. It’s a great and innovative idea, and predictably, NBA coaches hate it.
When reporters asked Phil Jackson what he thinks of the locker room intrusion, he acted like he was a young George Orwell just fleshing out some ideas for 1984.
“I’m going to stick my foot right in it, too,” Jackson said. “I wasn’t at the league meetings with the coaches this year, and I’m very disappointed in my comrades for rolling over on this so easily.”
“It’s going to be real hard on us coaches,” he said. “We do things in private. It’s an inner sanctum. For people to be in the inner sanctum, where emotions are high … it’s big brother, it’s very big brother. It’s very intimidating.”
Wah, wah, wah!
Listen, I enjoy Phil’s personality as much as anyone and think he’s brilliant, but this is ridiculous. What, is he going to be discussing top-secret nuclear weaponry before segueing into a lesson on how to properly defend the high pick-and-roll?
Take it easy, Phil. TNT producers are too smart to air anything particularly damaging to the coaches or the League.

This was by far the dumbest thing the League has done of late. Can’t a coach get some privacy with his players? This is nothing more than a gotcha move to catch a coach or player(s) in a compromising circumstance. Phil’s right on this one.

Riley said the same thing, so did the league meetings actually include coaches?

I think it’s a pretty stupid idea. Somtimes you say offensive stuff in locker rooms, and it’ll be just another way for the public to downgrade these guys.

The NBA is trying to capitalize on the boom of reality TV, I guess.

Shia, I think it will go the other way and when the first couple of guys do something deemed inapropriate and catch a fine, the players will tighten up with quickness.

Are these broadcasts from the locker room going to be live? I dont think so. So to see the edited version is not compelling TV. Phil can relax.

Rasheedionics says:
They put mic on some football players already. They screen everything before they broadcast it. It’s not live. So who cares.

RV says:
even if they edit the stuff, its still on tape, it can still be leaked out or discussed later on, all it takes is one person, who doesnt like what they hear, to let it all out. And putting a mic on a player when they play is one thing, doing it in the locker room is compeltely different.

So do they have cameras in Jeannie’s office? I mean, I assume Phil & Jeannie have their own cameras, but I don’t think the League does…
Dec.6 at 4:43 pm
Bryan says:
Yeah but it shouldn’t even be an issue is my point. They shouldn’t have to receive a fine for saying “so and so is a b*tch” or anything you know what I mean?

Cheryl says:
i don’t know about the locker room. that does seem intrusive to me. that should be the place where the players and coaches get to not be on guard about what they so or do. even with editing, they (the coaches or players) don’t have editorial control. so it’s up to a producer to decide what’s “entertainment”. i would object to this as well.

if i were phil, i’d pepper everything i said with expletives to drive the editors crazy.

I agree. You always hear players talking about how important it is to keep things that happen in the Locker room, exactly that, in the locker room. Well, I guess you can’t really do that.

Candice says:
They did this routinely during WNBA telecasts on The Worldwide Follower and it was basically 2 hours of whining to the refs and commentators repeating every single thing the coach just said.

Were I a coach, I’d just swear my +ss off the entire time the first time they put a camera on me. That’ll teach em…

I agree with phil. players and coaches can’t show frustration or emotions during game time, what if they go of in the locker room??
this will only lead to more fines and suspencions for coaches and players (rasheed, lookin’ at you)

Would you want microphones in your staff lounges? Your school cafeterias? Your common rooms?

Or perhaps he could just order all of his players to be naked during that part of the taping. Eboy would set his DVR to permanently record that, and disable his receiver from every changing channels again.

the wnba locker room, i assume, is a lot more respectful than an NBA locker room, it wouldn’t even be close…why don’t they mic’up contract negotions, now that’s good TV..Rashard’s agent, ” my client would like a contra-” Magic rep, “Done! We’ll Take it!”
Dec.6 at 5:34 pm
white hot eboy says:
Bodie, during Lakers telecasts, what would be the easist way for us to know it’s you knelt down in front of 24 with mouth agape at his locker? The bald spot, the pot belly, the manly size D breasts or the tramp stamp tattoo that has an arrow pointing down from the small of your back? Just wondering, so the people who haven’t actually seen you can properly recognize you.

i swear if i play pick up ball with you guys (bodie, izzo, shia, eboy, etc), i’d just die laughing from your trash talks.

This alleged tramp stamp - sounds very similar to the nearly identical tramp stamp on the small of your back, with the arrow an everything, just with the words “Entrance Only” added.

Last night, I drained about a 30 foot jumper. Immediately upon the swish, I yelled out, that’s worth 4, and held up for fingers. The former UCLA football player who was guarding me was not too pleased, but his displeasure did not discourage me from raining 3 other threes that game.

Weak follow-up, Bodie. Kind of like your continued attempts to persuade the opposite sex to “give me another chance, I won’t be so quick next time. I promise”.

nothin personal says:
It’s stupid to be able to view everything a coach says to his guys and then criticize. A coach is allowed to lie, downgrade people both on and off his team, swear, and generally do what it takes to get a psychological edge. You mic that, and the players get defensive, they start thinking rational instead of letting theirselves get carried away (even a scholar can allow himself to be affected by psychology of a mob), and you generally strip that “going to war mentality. Plus, those guys (coaches) get paid in millions for the small stuff. If everyone can copy that, then they lose money, there will always be that talent in coaching that sets the elite appart, but a lot of the coaching stuff, you are able to pick up.
