Media to Blame for Knicks Beatdown?

by Marcel Mutoni

The Knicks can’t get anything right. This is not news. What happened last night, though, might just take the cake.

The Pacers came into the Garden and stomped the Knicks by twenty-seven points. A reason they beat the Knicks so badly - other than New York’s inability to play good basketball, of course - might’ve been an a media-created rumor that Eddy Curry had guaranteed a Knick victory.

A reporter who missed a deathly boring Curry interview was told jokingly that Curry had guaranteed a victory over the Pacers. Though the group of journalists laughed, somebody present apparently told the Pacers that Curry had guaranteed a win. And they apparently used it as motivation.

“It can go either way in this league,” Jermaine O’Neal said. “The team can come out and play very well or you can guarantee and your team don’t play well and then you kind of look (foolish) a little bit.”

No wonder the Knicks hate the beat writers.

In other Knicks news: A crestfallen Isiah called his team heartless after the latest humiliating home loss. Can they just forfeit the rest of the season so we don’t have to deal with them anymore? Please?!

I heard the Knicks missed 20 straight shots in the 2nd quarter! That is pathetic.

would they stage open tryouts? if they do, would anyone go for it?

Dec.18 at 10:40 am

Russ Bengtson says:
IT’S NOT A QUESTION OF TALENT. It’s the poisonous atmosphere, the fact that Isiah Thomas CAN’T COACH, the fact that Jimmy Dolan puts his own stubborn attitude over everything, the fact that the players have absolutely quit (and to a man would probably welcome a trade to just about anywhere). THE PROBLEMS START AND END AT THE TOP.

Dec.18 at 10:50 am

Jared says:
Maybe if we stop paying attention to them they’ll just go away?

Dec.18 at 10:53 am

namik says:
Russ even though I agree that management is at fault, dont you think that blaming everything on the coach lets players off the hook and almost allows them to “quit”? I mean, sure Isiah is not be coaching properly, but the team is getting smacked on a regular basis. I think saying that the off court distractions might destroy chemistry is applicable to a team which has some title aspirations, but its not like the Knicks were the NBA champs to begin with. They are a bunch of individuals who are paid a lot of money to PLAY BASKETBALL. No matter what happens around you (with the exception of Steph), there is no excuse why teams like Sonics should come into your building and embarass you. And that holds true from top to bottom.

mamik, if you have a house party and invite 12 disguisingly dirty pigs to it, you can’t expect the house to be clean when they leave. It’s not the pigs fault. They’re just doing what they do.

Dec.18 at 11:07 am

TADOne says:
Regardless of what these so called “professional” athletes get paid, Russ is right, it starts at the top. Look at it this way…if your boss doesn’t perform, makes dumb decisions, runs up the deficit or your company, and then is in a very public sexual harrassment suit that the company has to pay out millions of dollars to settle, and then his boss comes out and backs him, what is your motivation to do good??

Dec.18 at 11:08 am

TADOne says:

Dec.18 at 11:15 am

namik says:
so according to your analogy eboy, the Knicks players are supposed to be missing shots, playing horrible defense and making a mockery of themselves?? Again, it is mainly the managements fault, largely because this is one of the worst put togather teams in the L right now, but you cant let the players get away with no blame whatsoever. If we substituted this bunch under Poppovich and the Spurs management, this team would not suddenly win 20 games in a row. Isiah may suck but if Nate Robinson misses a wide open shot, thats Nates fault.

Dec.18 at 11:15 am

drew says:
no i believe it was the 20 straight missed shots that was to blame for the beatdown

Dec.18 at 11:21 am

Russ Bengtson says:
Damn right this team wouldn’t win 20 games in a row under Popovich because it wouldn’t PLAY 20 games in a row under Popovich. There would be trades and buyouts and suspensions. There wouldn’t be this crushing feeling of “oh well, this is what we’ve got, guess we’ve got to live with it.” There is NO accountability in the Knicks organization from the top on down. Isiah can do anything he wants and not lose his job. By the same token, Eddy Curry (not to single him out, but just as an example) can play horrible, completely uninspired basketball, and still start the following night. It’s disgraceful.

Dec.18 at 11:23 am

Jared says:
Namik, after 3 years of sucking together as a group, you can’t blame the players anymore. How many times have we heard Marbury’s over rated, selfish, not a leader, etc? How many times have we heard Eddy Curry doesn’t play any D, has sh!t hands, no heart, etc? How many times can you say Jamal has no discipline or shot selection? When you see guys suck for three straight years it’s pointless to report about how bad the players are, that’s more than obvious, it’s the coach doing a God-awful job by keeping them together and trying to convince everyone, including those players, that they’re going to win, that they’re not as bad as we think they are, and that they’re going to take the league by surprise. He is the face of Knicks basketball, in every way possible, and it’s the ugliest face probably in professional sports right now.

Dec.18 at 11:33 am

namik says:
Russ no arguments there. I read your other post and saw that you mentioned the team structure whihc was my point. Jared I would say that the Lakers were in a somewhat similar position. Bynum didnt play at the end last year, had his game and manhood quesitoned by Kobe publicly and is looking better than ever. I realize he has Phil and Kareem coaching him, but his pride as a player has to have pushed him too. With all the things being written about the Knicks players, I am amazed that they are showing no fight. Remember when Jason Terry got pissed about all the stuff written about Atlanta and played his ass off while talking ish back? They werent very good and people made fun of Terry but atleast they showed some fight. This is just ridiculous.

Dec.18 at 11:40 am

Jared says:
Jason was still playing on a rookie contract i think. And you can’t compare the Knicks and their situation to the Lakers and theirs. The Lakers were just coming off a dynasty, kept a true franchise guy and top player, retained one of the best coaches in league history, and are playing well now with a young roster. Who are their key guys? Bynum, in his 3-rd year out of high school, Turiaf, one of the hungriest guys in the L, Luke Walton? All hustle. Their young ball handlers are all looking for some burn, and they have Kobe! The knicks on the other hand, dumped a crappy roster filled with big contracts, and really not the most talented guys, and add, a talented roster yes, but all guys with big, guaranteed contracts. And Isiah couldn’t sniff Phil Jacksons farts thats how far out of his coaching class he is. There are no players on the Lakers, besides maybe Lamar, who are even eligible for criticism the way these knicks players are…nobodys expecting that much out of the laker roster like they should be out of this knicks roster.

Dec.18 at 11:43 am

Russ Bengtson says:
If Dolan could get away with banning all media from attending Knicks practices and games, he would totally do it. Also, comparing the Lakers to the Knicks is like comparing apples and thermonuclear missiles.

Dec.18 at 1:16 pm

Dark says:
Agree with Russ that it starts at the top, but it’s still up to the players to TRY dammit! That was the one thing that made me somewhat hopeful last year. They say winning attitudes are contagious; apparently so are losing ones. Everybody on the team is just feeding off the losing attitudes of each other. You see games like this and wonder, how in the hell did they win 7 games?

Dec.18 at 1:19 pm

Dark says:
It also hurts when your coach doesn’t seem to . . . coach. Do they have any offensive sets?

Dec.18 at 1:27 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Why should they try? None of them want to be there anymore, none of them seem to have any respect for the coaching staff or the ownership. Why try? To make Isiah look better and ‘earn’ him another extension? I don’t blame the players one bit if they’ve quit on this sorry excuse for a franchise. I feel bad that the fans have to put up with it, but most of the season tickets belong to big corporations anyway. Let it burn.

Dec.18 at 1:29 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
I hope LeBron goes for a 50-20-20 tomorrow and Kobe gets 100 on Sunday. I’m serious about Kobe, too–the Lakers should be looking for him every time downcourt. He should be able to EASILY break 82.

Dec.18 at 1:40 pm

H to the izzo says:
Yeah but Russ,it seemed as though the players quit before they even gave any effort. They have to be partially blamed, but nowhere near as much as Isiah.Surely if all the SLAM regulars pitch in we could buy the Knicks.I’ve got a few changes I’d like to make

kobe won’t go off unless the knicks manage to make it a close game. he’s trying that whole ‘team ball’ thing this year; it’s quite disconcerting.

Dec.18 at 1:56 pm

Na, the Knicks have Jared Jeffries, remember? Zeke brought him in to be the big defensive stopper. Word to Isiah Kobe and Bron don’t go for a combined 70.

Dec.18 at 1:57 pm

Myles Brown says:
Yeah with that groin problem hes having, I dont think Kob is gonna try and rub it in the Knicks face…Id say hell have a pedestrian 35.

Dec.18 at 1:58 pm

H to the izzo says:
It’s been said before, but Charles Oakley really needs to punch the Knicks as an entity in the face.

Dec.18 at 1:58 pm

Jared says:
kidding. If Mike Dunleavy went for 36 (!) skys the limit for these two. Expect a Larry Hughes sighting…and I swear, please God, if you’re listening, the one thing I will ask for all season, is for Trevor Ariza to bang HARD on somebody, preferably Eddy Curry if not 3-4 players…who am I kidding…in order to get dunked on you need to be near the basket on defense, let alone attempt to contest a shot.

Dec.18 at 2:01 pm

Jared says:
Next time St Johns plays at the Garden can we just kidnap them? Not let them leave, and have them play instead of the knicks every night? Not that they’re any good, at all, but at least give us players who want to play.

Anthony Mason Jr SHOULD be starting for the Knicks right now

Nobody dislikes Dolan and Isiah more than me (Russ runs me close, but because of the deep seated hate for Dolan, I’m still number 1). If what is happening to my knicks is hurting anyone MORE than me, I advise your people to be on suicide watch through the festive season. HOWEVER, at no time and under no circumstance is it acceptable for a NY Knicks player to quit on his team, his franchise and the city…EVER. So while Dolan and Isiah are to blame, there isn’t a single player who ISN’T to blame for this. As repulsive as this situation is, one player CAN make a difference. Everyone has just accepted ‘this is the way it is’ FU*K THAT! As long as you still lace em up for NYC, you better bust your ass on both ends of the floor and start playing like a TEAM. ‘But the coach is not running my play…’ ‘Everything is so negative…’ FU*K THAT! Stop whining like a bunch of bit*hes and PLAY BALL! MAN UP! Right now, all of Steph’s credit is GONE. Curry? Get the fk outta here. Q Bich? I wish I WOULD catch you uptown with no security. Yes, I wish Isiah and Dolan would disappear (eboy, I got something better we can do with that $100G if you’re down…), but as of today, they are still here, we have to keep on playing. Put the wins and losses to the side for now, this is about the very essence of sports. Heart, commitment, teamwork, sacrifice and COMPETITIVENESS! Right now the whole team are not only disrespecting the game, but denigrating the very essence of sports. Something has to be done. Enough is enough. This cannot be allowed to go on any longer.

Dec.18 at 4:54 pm

Jared says:
my dude, it’s gonna keep going on as long as that management is in charge though. And not everybody’s cashed in just yet, Lee and Balkman, and even nate, play hard every possession, they do play hard for the city and the team and the legacy and the fans. It’s hurting me just as bad as it’s hurting you and a lot of other NY heads, but we’re really just gonna have to close our eyes for a little while.

Dec.18 at 6:09 pm

Harlem_World says:
Balkman, Lee and Nate haven’t quit, thats true. But the problem is, because they are not the leaders of the team or the ‘franchise’ players - nobody is taking notice. Unless the franchise players begin to give a fu*k the culture of the team won’t change. Even worse, when you’re busting your ass out there and you see your franchise players and (so called) leaders mailing it in, it kills your heart and begins to grow a hatred for them and the management that’s allowing this to happen. That’s why Rose wants out.
