GP Wants to Wear Celtic Green

by Marcel Mutoni

When Danny Ainge put the current Celtics team together this past summer, everyone who cares about the franchise was elated. Soon thereafter, though, they began asking questions like, “The Big Three is great, but who else do we got?!” So far, the answers haven’t been very satisfactory.

Gary Payton thinks he could provide some of those answers for the C’s. He told his agent that he’d like to join Boston.

“He called me and said, ‘Hey, I’m reminding you that the Celtics are a team I feel like I can help,’ ” said agent Aaron Goodwin.

The 39-year old GP says he doesn’t mind coming off the bench or making the veteran’s minimum of $1.2 million.

Am I the only one that pictures Gary Payton doing this sort of thing - joining the team he feels has the best shot at a title in any given year - until he becomes a senior citizen?

GP would bring verbal diahorrea to the Celts but not much else.

Buzz Killington says:
GP used the last of his powers in the finals with that high bank shot lob.

Joss Coulton says:
GP is God! He would add a great deal to a shallow bench!!

Dec.21 at 10:24 am

Keith says:
What would the 67 year old Gary Payton add Joss? Trash talking? Experience? I think the Celtics could do better. I don’t think Payton would be a good fit. He’d still be looking to get his own shot and frankly, on this team, that’s not a good fit.

Benoit Benjamin says:
I love Payton, but i believe the Celts would be better trading for one of the Sonics 14 PGs. But not Ridnour.

Matters

Solito says:
Why not? He can easily hang with those lame a$$ east coast PG’s. Plus he is good shooter (which the C’s don’t have any at the guard spots - other then E-House).

mr. first draft pick says:
a I cant blame him hes funnah join the big three plus his old friend posey. he funnah feel good at the gadren. now he has a chance at another title. with the best tem rigt now. miami really needs gp righ now.

BETCATS says:
why does everything have to go green, first money, then hippies, then cars, now the Glove (for the second time)

Kevin says:
i like Ridnour as a backup in Boston..

Dizzle says:
Don’t get me wrong, Payton was great. Key word being WAS. I’m still a fan of his career and his accomplishments. But his skills have dimished greatly and I hate to see him being burned by younger guys (Felton, Ford/Calderon, Nelson, and even Kidd - I guess he’s younger). Sure the East doesn’t have great PG’s (Parker, Williams, Nash, and Paul are all in the West), but Payton just can’t keep up anymore. The C’s don’t need another scorer (which I don’t think Payton can do anyways) and his defense is the same as the 13th player off the bench for a Canadian university basketball team. And it would be sad to see a 39 year old talking trash with no game to back it up. That would be sad for the Glove. Sure Cassell is old and talks trash, but he’s still playing at a decent level. So no hate for Sam I Am (plus my bro looks like the asian version of him)

I’m pretty sure “The Glove” is now “The Ill-Fitting Sock”

Dec.21 at 12:02 pm

Solito says:
Riggs… he has no backup. Rondo is real nice, and Ainge knew it. But GP could come in and hold down the fort for 10-12 a game (he sure would not have fallen for the fake).

Sesa says:
I just wondered if GP didn’t touch the ball, will he pout and stop playing again?

Dec.21 at 12:13 pm

Jared says:
It’s basketball law, you don’t jump with the game on the line…hands straight up, but you do NOT jump

BETCATS: I thank God everyday that I don’t look like my bro. hahaha

BobbyRay says:
To all of y’all that think he couldn’t contribute, did you see the Pistons game? I mean Eddie House couldn’t even get the ball past half court and when he did he held it ’til the clock was low. GP can serve as a 15-18 minute backup especially if Rondo shoots like he normally does later in the season. He can definitely bring it up and at least get the offense going for which ever of the big three is on the floor. IMO!

GP is a ring-slut. I’m so glad Malone and him didn’t get them with the Lakers, although his Miami ring still irks me.

Andre green says:
HIRE GP! HIRE GP! An if anyone knows how to get in touch with him or his people I’m looking for the Nike Air Zoom Flight “the Glove” size 12 in Black/White style number #830048-011. So please hire GP and fire Isiah Thomas this is what the basketball world needs and wants.

Simple. The man is too old.

Dec.21 at 2:14 pm

MJAX says:
GP may be older than sand. But you can’t tell me Chauncey would have had his way with him the way he did Rondo and “Hoppy” Allen. And come on Dizzle, “GP” is not going to be out there guarding the flash by night starting points in the league. He’d be going up against the young dumm inexperienced ones he could talk into turnovers or the old nasty vets like eric snow and jacque vaughn. Putting “GP” on the 2nd unit(house, posey, big baby, scalabrine or pollard) for the “C’s” in the east, he’d almost be on the all star ballot. If Lebron went down again, that lineup may be better than the Cavs!! Age ain’t nuttin’ but a number, you can’t gauge anybody by their Miami standards, I mean look at Miami now!

Young Chris #3 says:
Sign him up! Let’s get that 17th banner up already!

Dec.21 at 4:19 pm

Lee says:
Celtics really need Gary. Glove brings a veteran leadership, back-up point guard who can defend other teams scoring guards, and the final experience none of the celtics roaster has. Sure, he is old. But Celtics doesn’t need to play Gary for 35 minutes. All they need from him is 10-20 minutes. Gary could really help C’s PG problem. I am begging you Danny. Hire GP to finish your championship roaster.

Dec.21 at 5:01 pm

J Rid says:
Gary, sit your old behind down!! He can barely walk straight let alone play basketball!! Please don’t hurt the game I love by playing just as Shaq is doing now!!

Dec.21 at 5:32 pm

JR says:
maybe he is just trying to get another ring but, did you see eddie house get abused by lindsey hunter the other night.

Dec.21 at 5:45 pm

Z says:
The more I think about it, the more I feel comfortable with Ridnour playing 10-15 minutes a game with the Cs.

Dec.21 at 5:58 pm

omega says:
remember we are not asking him to come in and run point, but to come in as a RESERVE and kick back MAYBE 15 to 20 minutes a game at the max. With aggressive play and 6 fouls for his experience is HUGE, he is an INTELLIGENT player
WHY not if we can play 500 ball the rest of the way we are a 52 win team, however with a deeper bench are we going to play 500 ball dont think SO!!! RESIGN PAYTON

Dec.21 at 7:15 pm

Pace says:
Look what happened when GP went to LA, and how many years ago was that. The glove needs to be hung up sometime and I don’t think it should be in Boston. He should go back to Seatle where the help is really needed if he wants to wear green that bad.

Dec.21 at 8:26 pm

Chris O says:
The Celts are a team I’m interested in playing for too. GP got his ring already, the guy needs to let it go.

Dec.21 at 8:51 pm

Young Chris #3 says:
GP can still do it… He has Celtic Pride too

who do they have to lose to get him? i mean he was a lock down defender and a good distributor for much of his career, it wouldn’t hurt to have him around as someone with finals experience…i wonder what type of guy he is in the locker room tho…?

If Gary Payton is willing to ride the pine and be a backup for Ragin’ Rondo, then I say, “Do it up!”
