Darko: Down in the Dumps

by Marcel Mutoni

This was supposed to be Darko Milicic’s year. Money was a non-issue; and a team (the Grizzlies) needed and coveted him for the first time in his NBA career. Darko, who showed occasional flashes of brilliance on the boards (and the defensive end of the floor) as a member of the Orlando Magic, seemed ready for the challenge.

Unfortunately, it hasn’t exactly worked out as previously envisioned, and Milicic is disillusioned.

“My confidence level right now is really low. It’s horrible,” Milicic said. “It’s weird. I’m with a team now that needs me, and has given me every opportunity to play.

I’ve got a nice contract, but for some reason I can’t even do the things I used to do.”

The good thing for Darko, whose game has inexplicably regressed this season, is that he’s still only 22 years old. So, he’s got time to turn things around, but he better get going.

The Knicks would probably trade for him, but he’s white AND foreign. Sorry, Darko.

The modern day Sam Bowie?

Sam Bowie? Nah, Darko’s never had serious injuries. More like the modern day LaRue Martin.

His game has regressed? From what? Sh@#ty to sh@#tier?

Harlem_World says:
Russ, you know Sam Bowie will never be remembered for his injuries - only that he was selected ahead of Jordan, Barkley, Stock etc.

All Darko comments and jokes will now go through his agent, Chad Ford..

Chris O: HA! I love the annual Chad Ford “This is Darko’s year” article that suckers some jagoff in my fantasy league into selecting him in the 4th round. That said, he’s sure to really improve over the summer.

Anyone remember when Adonal Foyle made 7 mil a year? I’d rather have Darko than what Foyle was/is.

Dec.18 at 6:07 pm

Chris O says:
Ford says it every year and a few other people at ESPN chime in with it too. Ford must take them out for drinks or dinner or something around season preview time. “Guys, I’ve got a lot riding on this guy’s success. Think about how smart we’ll look when he turns the corner.”

Hey Jared, that 03 draft was good (what u listed) but come on…LeBron? hello?

he was just listin the players they coulda piked lebron was piked number 1 darko was number 2. n darko is no wer near up2 sam bowie standards. sam bowie averaged 11 points or somthing for his career n u cant tell me those r terrible numbers its just if u compare em 2 michael jordan numbers they sure r. but he was a decent player slowed by injuries and he stuffed his career up by comin bak 2 early from injury he coulda been as good as hakeem. i take that bak but he still woulda been better

I’d still say he’s a bad fit in Grizzlies because he’s always forced to cover penetrating player. The Grizzlies perimeter players can’t stay in front of their man. Even Rudy Gay.

QQ says:
Yeah, he’s only 22, but STILL he plays like sh*t. You can’t use his age in defending his absolute lack of skill.

Belatedly: the Griz are SOFT. I watched them play the Warriors a couple nights ago and they looked ascared of Matt Barnes. I mean, I loves me some Matt Barnes, but come on. I guess when your team is all Euros, you get what you pay for.

“for some reason I can’t even do the things I used to do.” Not playing next to Dwight Howard anymore will do that to you…Not resigning him is one of the better decisions Otis Smith has made.

shell says:
Darko just needs to sit down with a sports psychologist and work out his angst. Being continually mocked as a draft bust and called “the human victory cigar” would make anyone insecure.
