Artest Thinking About Going Home?

by Marcel Mutoni

For such a mediocre team, the New York Knicks sure do draw a lot of attention. I guess it has a lot to do with that whole train-wreck theory; it’s near impossible to look away. Just imagine how much more interesting they’d become if they added the League’s most combustible element to the mess?

NY native Ron Artest, in the area yesterday to play against the Nets, talked about the possibility of playing for his hometown team.

“No matter how much you think about it, it’s going to present itself,” Artest said.

“There’s so many things you have to take into consideration: The season, my agent, the teams. It’s definitely my decision, but you have to take advice.”

Nothing would make me happier than Ron joining the Knicks. Absolutely nothing.

Already, I can picture Isiah sending Ron-Ron into the stands to beat down some of those unruly fans. Make it happen, Dolan!

Update: SLAM contributor Michael Tillery had a chance to build with Ron Artest this past summer, and you can read the interview on his website.

Yeah, Knicks games are like a train-wreck, except the fans are the victims.

Kadavour says:
People make too much of Artest’s off-court antics and past indiscretions. At the end of the day, he’s a work horse and plays with his heart. He’d do fine on the same squad with z-bo. Same for S. Jacks. Look at what he’s done for the Yay since his return. Media sensationalism has warped some ppl’s minds, they can “piss and tell em its rain” and they’ll accept it.

Russ Bengtson says:
In a recent piece, Ron-Ron claimed to be on the same level as Kobe and LeBron. So, if nothing else, he’s got a good sense of humor. While he remains an outstanding defender, he freelances too much on offense and settles for the three WAY more than he should. He needs to be on a contending team with a dominant personality to keep him in check, like the Spurs. NOT the Knicks.

For a Ron-Ron Knicks team fans, the new marketing slogan: Come for the game, stay for a beat down.

TADOne says:
I agree Russ. But from a pure comedic stand point, can you imagine Zeke trying to call out Artest for having ‘no heart’?

Russ Bengtson says:
It’s hard to figure out a trade that would work, since the Knicks don’t have that many expiring contracts, and all the young guys are still on rookie deals. Figure if the Kings were to trade him to New York, they’d also want the Knicks to eat one of their bad contracts–probably either Kenny Thomas or Shareef. (I can’t imagine the Kings just letting Ron-Ron walk.) Here’s a deal that works under the cap that would be amazing: Marbury and Balkman for Artest, Thomas AND Shareef.

Russ Bengtson says:
Of course Sac would then have to flip Bibby too, but I’m sure they could find a taker. Like Cleveland, for Eric Snow, Ira Newble and Donyell Marshall.
