Antonio Daniels Is Awesome
Check out this great story in the Washington Post about Daniels and the Wizards organization coming to the aid of a lady who not only was set on fire by her boyfriend last year, but was about to get evicted from her home just before Christmas this year.

Good move by the Wiz and especially Antonio. Really nice sentiment for the holiday season, too.

If you give 10 with 50k anuall incom, 1000 would imply 5 Mill anuall incom. I think 20K is a real nice sum for a locker room collection…

It is nice sentiment, but I do understand where Jas is coming from. While most of them probably wearing at least $200,000 on their chest and wrist, 20 Gz is really nothing for them. I’m not a religious person at all but I do believe that to whom more is given, more is expected. I know NBA as a whole doing a lot of charity work but still it’d be nice to see more on individual level.

It’s a nice gesture, but if this woman is being evicted from her house, what’s 20 g’s gonna do? It helps a little bit but it’s kinda like dumping a bucket of water on a burning building. It can’t hurt, but it’s doubtful that it’s gonna solve the problem. Please don’t take this comment is ungrateful, it’s an incredible gesture and it’s great that the NBA gives to people in need, good story.

Yeah, I’m with all the dissenters here. Twenty grand from a team that, all together, makes 68 million dollars. In numbers, the team makes 68,000,000 dollars and this woman gets 20,000. Sorry, a cool mil woulda made the story that much better. I bet Gilbert didn’t put in anything, in fear of not getting that contract extention next year

i donate money all the time and i can tell you this 20g’s is alot of money to donate to ONE PERSON.

Jukai says:
Okay, I’m throwing this to you MATHEMATICALLY White Hot Eboy. Let’s say NONE of the coachs were involved in this. And hypothetically, let’s say every player threw in an equal amount from that 20g’s. That means every player put in 1538 dollars. Let’s see how much that is to the highest paid player on the team, Mr. Jamison… the equation for that would be 1538/16,360,095 = x/100…. which is 0.0094% of his total income. I’m interning at a tech repair center out on the Island. While I wont be working for a year, let’s say I did. I’d have to donate 294 dollars to match Jamisons astouding offer. Now Dominique McGuire’s contribution is a little bit more grand. 1538/427,163 = x/100 = 0.36% of his total income. A bit rougher, I couldn’t get away with giving that much. Still, if I had these people’s moneys, I’d feel comfortable with parting away with a bit more of decimal percentages. Could you imagine how well off this woman and her two starving children with be with just 1% of all these guys money? Gosh…

Jukai says:
Now, in fairness to them, I do know the majority of them donate much more money to all kinds of ventures, so I’m makign this way worse than it is. The NBA is the most charitable sports organization on the planet. Still, I dunno. Would it have killed Gilbert to part with 100gs of his 10 million dollar annual?

I’ll take 20 grand.Sh*t I’d be grateful for ten bucks from a total stranger, you guys are as*holes.
Dec.6 at 1:41 pm
white hot eboy says:
Jukai, you’re math is incredibly mind-boggling but you’re missing the point. Yeah, by your standards there could have been plenty of money to go around for the lady and her family, but at what point does it become overkill? If the Wiz donate a million to her, and then some sh*tty situation happens in, let’s say, Indiana, do the Pacers have to do the same to be looked upon as “up to snuff”, charitably speaking? It would set too high of a precedant for every sports team to have to make huge charitable donations to people in need in their communities, fromt he overload of one extra genourous franchise. Sometimes these things could be left out of the media and just have a good deed be a good deed, but most public company’s, and sport franchises, are always looking for good PR, so this was one of those times when that happened, but at the end of the day, that money is still helpful to someone in need, regardless.

Right, we are as*holes because a woman is in desperate need and they gave her but aren’t quite giving her enough. This does sound like a d!ck thing to say, but its like they did it for a story recognizing their great contribution rather than to actually help the person. I haven’t given sh!t, I wish I could, again I’m not trying to say this isn’t a nice gesture, but this isn’t some stranger giving 10 dollars out of their wallet to a random person walking down the street. This is charity. It’s like when you’re walking and you give a nickel to salvation army. You know you’re not giving enough to really help, but you’re giving. This woman doesn’t have anyone else giving, and it’s doubtful that what the wizards are giving will be enough to take care of her problems. It’s still a very nice gesture on their behalf though.
Dec.6 at 1:46 pm
Jared says:
I wish I didn’t say anything, it’s a very thoughtful contribution, and it’s very nice of the organization as whole. My observation is that it won’t be enough to find this woman a home so what’s the point? Doesn’t take away from the Wiz doing a great deed.

Jukai says:
No, I’m not takin’ back what I said Jared. One million is too much yeah, but I woulda really liked to see 50-100gs. If this was ONE MAN’S contribution, 20gs woulda been great. But c’mon, this was the entire team, coaching staff and organization? I mean… 20gs is gonna keep the girl in her house, pay off a couple of her bills, and feed her kids for a week, but it ain’t gonna get her off her feet. She’ll be back in the same position. And I dunno, cause as I said, these guys give more money to other issues which one could even argue are more important. I dunno. If I made as much money as Butler, I’d give 20gs to this woman alone.

Bryan says:
Who the f*ck are you to say whether its enough? That’s why you’re as*holes.I bet she isn’t complaining and asking for more. There are millions of sh*tty situations out there, and these dudes work for their money like everyone else, sure we all say they’re just athletes blah blah. But the truth is how many of us could put in the work to make it to a league? Just because we would all love to play basketball for a living does make it any less of a job for them. They shouldn’t be obligated to give half their salaries or even a tenth. F*ck that dude , they gave her some money , more money then she had before and money that I bet she is thankful for and all of you should shut the f*ck up, or donate a percentage of your yearly salary to someone in need in your neighborhood. Buy a bum some lunch or something do something to help instead of expected people who are more well off than you to do it all for you. F*cking as*holes.

F*ck you man, I DO buy the bums in my neighborhood lunch, frequently. I DO donate to charity, mostly cancer research funds. Do you know how much of my money would go into that if I had five million a year? Each one of them donated f*ckin’ 1500 dollars, this ain’t about 20gs, they donated 1500 dollars. Man, if their lives were only as lucky as hers, man.

I’m outta this arguement. I’m not going to go back on anything I said. One can only hope twenty thousand can put this woman back to the normal life.

Jared says:
Dude you shouldn’t be so ignorant towards other people before you rip them. I don’t disagree that there are bigger problems out there and it isn’t the job of the NBA or people who have millions of dollars to solve those problems, but don’t go telling people they don’t give anything back to their communities but sitting around waiting for the more fortunate to. F*ck that. Nobodys saying this woman has a bigger problem than anyone else in the world, and it was great that she was given help, a dollar is a great gesture, every penny helps anyone who needs money, but it sucks when athletes go around saying they’ll wear a headband even if it costs them thousands of dollars a game, or they’ll curse at the media, they don’t care about the fine…or when Latrell Sprewell’s 10 Mil a year isn’t enough to feed his family. That gives the public a skewed image of the value of a dollar to athletes. They do put in great work to get where they are, nobodys taking that away from them, but they’re in a position to give back at a greater advantage than your regular person. When did I get a feature on slamonline.com for voluntarily working with needy children or providing relief to people who had temporarily lost their homes? This is stupid, because I don’t think it wasn’t a great gesture, which I’ve said it was every time I’ve commented on this article, but if you’re on the way to being homeless with starving children and someone gives you a chunk of change that will definitely help, but won’t solve your problem, they shouldn’t be credited with saving the day, but doing a great deed.
Dec.6 at 2:08 pm
Jared says:
I feel you Jukai, it sucks that some people aren’t in the position to give back to the extent they would like to. But I don’t feel bad for a basketball player who makes as much money as they do, and they work hard, but there are people who work f*ckin 7 days a week, and don’t make enough money to feed their children or pay their bills, sh!t is real out there, and there are a lot of people who work harder than NBA players that can’t even dream of seeing a ball players pay check in years of income.

Did any of you actually read the article and notice that Antonio was the focal point of the headline? He also payed for the funeral of the Miami Hurricane player that was killed earlier this year. It’a about the action, not the amount. Learn that sh*t, gentlemen. If EVERYONE put some money out, the filthy rich wouldn’t be expected to donate through the nose because they’re priveleged to have more than the average Joe.
Dec.6 at 2:17 pm
Jared says:
Yeah I did, and that was great of Antonio. I’m not saying that this isn’t a good story though. I’m not saying that it wasn’t a great gesture. I am agreeing that it was a great action and that anytime anyone gives money it’s a great action.

Just like people…an organization gives 20 thousand to someone who has nothing, and we’re upset because they didn’t give enough. They didn’t have to give anything, you know. If you were down to nothing, no home and medical bills, would you still be griping if someone you didn’t know (regardless of their financial status) gave you 20G’s you didn’t earn?

Chief says:
Everyone who’s like saying that is was a nice gesture. it’s not a gesture, it was a bunch of guys going hey lets help them out. Athletes can’t save the world but they can help people out in a bad spot. What were they supposed to do? Start a college fund for the kids? They saved a family from falling apart at the hinges. They gave the woman time, to heal emotionally which is what she needs most it would appear. Don’t try and discredit it. Money can’t fix all the problems but the “gesture” probably means more to her than the money.

Deez Noots says:
Just the fact that this argument is happening is whats wrong with sports these days. Relax. Work as hard on your job as NBA players worked to get into the league, make your own damn riches, and decide how to use your funds by yourself. Talk is cheap.

Some of yall are a bunch of haters. Some of you guys act like the Wiz don’t have other charities to donate to. You guys act like this woman is the ONLY person they’ve had to donate money to. Yes, $20,000 isn’t too much compared to the $68,000,000 the whole team makes, but why dont you include all the other money that the Wiz have contributed to charity that hasn’t been publicized by the media? I’d say that this was a very generous gesture by the Wiz.

Rob Paxon says:
Some dudes on the Cowboys actually bought this lady with an autistic kid a new house… food for thought. A nice gesture and a very kind thing to do by the Wiz, but the other folks have a point as well. If she needs a new house $20,000 isn’t gonna get her it. That’s just a way to look at the net result of everything, it isn’t commentary on the kindness at heart here, which is doubtlessly a great thing.

Dutch Rich says:
Half you fools have retarded f–d-up rational. The lady probably doesn’t have employment so she needs to be able to put enough deposit money on the table for a new crib and pay for movers. Not easy being disfigured trying to convince a landlord to take a chance on you. Mission pretty much accomplished I would say. Stop looking at what these athletes have. And just because they making millions doesn’t mean their money isn’t tied up. Some of ya’ll just need to go open a bank account and see if you can manage that.

You know, I called up my Dad about this and talked to him. Really wanted to see the guy’s opinion. While my exclamation of donating whenever I can, I’m not even out of college so I don’t donate that much. My dad does. He’s a standup guy. So I ask him what’s his opinion on this. He told me he was watching the Bob Costas on HBO with Barkley and McEnroe guest starring that day. John begins talking about this charity he’s really into and announces that he’s going to put 25,000 dollars into it through his organization. Barkley really seems taken back by this and says he’ll match McEnroe’s offer. To my surprise, Costas is taken into it too and says HE’LL throw in 25,000 dollars into it. So three guys, 75,000 dollars in the spur of a moment. And none of these guys made remotely as much as Gilbert and Jamison will make in their career. I don’t want to hear about moneys tied up with these guys. That’s the most messed up excuse ever.
