Very general, short, brief look at NBA

It’s too early to be too early

By Sam Rubenstein

We have lots of over the weekend stuff coming, from Holly’s post up to game notes. For now It’s time to take your entirely too early glance at the standings, as we stumble towards the Thanksgiving abyss.

Thanks to Orlando’s win over Boston, the Magic are now tied with the greatest team ever Celtics for the #1 seed in the East. The C’s have played fewer games, so they win on percentage points, but the two of them are close enough. Charlotte is in fourth, and notable teams missing from the playoffs would be Chicago, Miami, and New York, if you consider the last team notable. Washington seems to have righted itself and is on the way back up, clinging to that 8th seed for the moment.

In the West, hey is that New Orleans in first? Houston is on the outside looking in, but they have injuries as their excuse. Most of the West is bunched together. Golden State couldn’t pick up that elusive first W for a while, but now they’ve got two in a row and are heading to MSG against that train wreck of a team which has already been through a season’s worth of drama in the past 7 days.

Leading the league in scoring: LeBron James. In second… Kevin Martin! Three point guards (Steve Nash, Jason Kidd, Chris Paul) are averaging double digit assists, and Jason Kidd is 0.7 rebounds per game away from a triple double every night.

And there is your extra brief NBA where we stand recap.

I want to thank Tom Brady and Randy Moss for ruining my memories of childhood last night. I have blurry memories of Joe Montana to Jerry Rice being the most unstoppably dominant tandem of all tiiiiiiimes. Tecmo and Super Tecmo cemented that legacy. And now there’s this Brady-Moss connection, and they seem to be better than Montana to Rice. It makes me question all of the things I once thought were certainties about the universe. We were always told that Jerry Rice was the hardest working man on the planet, that his dad was a bricklayer, and he would throw bricks at young Jerry and he would catch them in the burning Mississippi heat for 10 hours a day blah blah blah it was some real folk hero mythology stuff. And then Rice put up Wilt-esque NFL numbers, breaking every receiving record, with monster performances in Super Bowls, he was untouchable as the greatest WR ever without question, and some would say he was the best football player of all-time.

Randy Moss is better than him. It’s impossible, but true. The universe is unravelling. Thankfully the Celtics lost a game to put the NBA version of that madness on hold. Okay, enough rambling. As you can see my head has exploded and the gooey remains are sitting on my desk.

For those of you having problems printing your Beowulf tickets, I’m looking into it and I’ll get back to you in a little while.

At what age does Jason Kidd actually get worse? I can see him playing until he’s 57 and still being one of the top 3 point guards in the league.

Celtics shrink under competition. Severe weakness at center position. Randy “the freak” Moss finally has someone who can toss him the ball.

Cap; that is unbelievably rash. Is that deliberate? The Celtics have played the Nets twice, the Raps once and Denver. Now, admittedly, none of the aforementioned teams is classed as being in the ‘elite’ category that currently holds Phoenix and the Spurs but they are all solid teams. The loss will hopefully give everybody a bit of perspective. The comparisons with the ‘96 Bulls was crazy. The claims they might go 82-0 were outrageous and now we can add your comment of “Celtics shrink under competition”.

Moss is exhibiting the superstar potential that Chris Carter claimed during Randy’s rookie year. Freakishly athletic, technically talented. Moss reversed his Vince Carter rep.

Captain America says:
Moss calls himself “the freak”, has since his Viking days (not my label). Celtics shrink under competition. Move KG to 5 because Perk can’t guard Howard, KG fouls out. No bench. Loss comes after time off.

Keith says:
I’m confused Cap. Was your statement regarding the Celtics, a general one or just relating to last nights game? I guess using your ruling we should deem the 06-07 Cavs as ’shrinkers under competition’ as they didn’t perform in the NBA Finals. Maybe include Michael Jordan in there somewhere for all the potential game winners he missed in his career. Yeah, this ’shrinkers under competition’ tag is fun to distribute after one incident.

Ken you need to leave Brittney Spears and Captian America alone

Boing Dynasty says:
On the last play of te Cowboys/Redskins game Washington threw a hail marry that went straight to Owens who was playing defence, and he batted it away when it could have easily been caught and padded his already great stats for the day( 4 TDs), i was kind of impressed, considering the source.

Nov.19 at 2:42 pm

Captain America says:
Keith, let me put this in simple terms, going into the season most rationale sports experts questioned two things about the Celtics: (1) depth or bench, and (2) the “other” positions, starting center and point guard. The PG seems to be stepping up (good for him) but the center position and the bench (generally) is a problem. After the Heat gave the Celtics nearly more than they could handle, the Magic exposed the weakness at center (KG replaces Perkins and fouls out at a crucial time) and the bench was virtually non-existent. This is exhibit A and exhibit B of a shrinking team.

Captain America says:
Betcats, please don’t lump me with Brittney Spears . Brittney exposes her vital parts for nothing. I expose my brilliance for the furtherance of mankind.

Russ Bengtson says:
The Celtics have lost ONE (1) game. Just as it was too early to comapre them with the ‘96 Bulls, the ‘86 Celtics, the ‘07 Patriots and the Roman Empire, it’s also too early to throw them on the scrap heap. ONE GAME. Chill out. Jesus.

Physically, Randy Moss is better but i still would take Jerry Rice….Randy Moss is a freak no doubt but dude is still the same guy that quits on his team, takes plays off, and doesn’t go over the middle…..

Bryan says:
I admit I’ve only been really watching football for about ten years, but NE is the best team I’ve ever seen.Tom Brady is ridiculously good. Much better than Manning.

Nov.19 at 2:57 pm

Captain America says:
Over reaction time? I didn’t say that the Celtics are doomed (however, there are at least 5 teams ahead of them overall). Hell, even KG is said they are learning more about one another as they go on.
While the Celtics beat the Heat, at home, by such a slim margin, it has to be considered a disappointment given where the Heat are in terms of wins and losses. Chill time, Russ?

And you’re the one that said the Celtics “shrink under competition.” That’s about as big an overreaction as there’s been in this thread.

The Celtics are good….

Nov.19 at 3:47 pm

white hot eboy says:
Russ, I would have used the joke “no, but there are two that are 1-8″ but the Heat and Bulls each won another game.

Speaking of the NFL, is it just me, or is there something wrong with Brady being such a unanimous pick for MVP. Don’t get me wrong, he definitely deserves it, but shouldn’t Moss get SOME MVP consideration? I wonder if Brady would have these incredible numbers if he had any other WR. 16 of Brady’s 38 TD passes have been to Randy.
