The Struggles of Chris Bosh

by Marcel Mutoni

Spearheaded by Chris Bosh and a mishmash of funky Euros, the Toronto Raptors were one of the better feel-good stories last season. They won their division and came within a botched last-second play of pushing the Nets to a game seven in their first round Playoff series.

This year, the team is off to a bit of a slow start (after yesterday’s home loss to Golden State, Toronto is sitting at .500), and Chris Bosh seems to have forgotten how to play basketball. From the Toronto Star:

“There’s nothing much I can say. Passing, scoring, shooting, it’s just not there for me,” Bosh said.

“I just have to be patient, as hard as that may be.”

The two-time All-Star forward’s numbers are down all across the board, and he knows full well that the Raptors can only go as far as he takes them.

In other Raptors news: It looks like they’re still running the same play all game long, which opponents are easily picking apart. “Hey, let’s see any of you win Coach of the Year while running just one play!”, coach Sam Mitchell did not necessarily add.

Bryant Reeves says:
I was at the game yesterday and the loss was NOT on Bosh. Mitchell is running the most bizarre substitution patterns I’ve ever seen and refuses to alter his game plan during the game. GS was dead in the water until the 4th when Mitchell refused to substitute and was simply outcoached by Nelson. Mitchell did not deserve coach of the year and should not have been rehired. He is at best an assistant coach who will keep the young guns in line and occasionally wrestle with them.

Did the Monstars steal his talent?

I was at the game, and I would have to disagree. A lot of it comes down to Bosh and the way hes been playing this year. Hes slow to react, his shot is off and he turns the ball over too much. He looks terrible and has no low post game. I do agree though with any criticism towards Mitchell. He is a terrible coach, runs the same play and his sub patterns make no sense. Whenever a player is playing great he will sub them out. He has a strict sub pattern which is the same every game. Its little grade school ball where he has to please all the players parents and gives them equal time. Its terrible. Regardless, they are 5-5 so it could be much worse, and likely will be after this road trip.

wow..a team starts the season playing.500 ball and this is what they get…its 10 games into the season and you guys are ready to jump ship on the Raps..come on last year they started 2-8 and look at the season they had. Its early inthe season and they are still working on their line-up. Ya Bosh isnt playing like he usually does but just give him time and he will get into a rythm. When there is so much depth on one team it doesn’t always have to be the same player stepping up although Bosh is the face of their franchise and he will be back to himself very soon. If Bosh is still playing like this for another couple of months then its time to worry..People have been predicting that the Bulls are going to do very well this season…where are they now?? have they all jumped ship???..exactly is only 10 games into the season…..

Captain America says:
The excuse being used for Tony Parker is that he played ball for the French team this past summer. Does the same apply to Chris?

Lashawn Mcmullen says:
Bosh is good when he gets healthy he’s gonna be great (oh and it’s still early in the season)

Boing Dynasty says:
Partly, he also has a bad knee and plantar fasciitis, but hes playing through it. So this is what you get.

Bosh needs to rent one of those Magic Johnson’s tapes which teaches you baskebtall fundamentals…

Tom says:
that monstars line was gold Russ!!….but seriously, I put all the blame on Mitchell. His offense is so simplistic that Bosh is always crowded when he gets the ball up at the elbow so he can’t do much….if it wasn’t for TJ and this team would be much worse. BTW Bosh is shooting like 90% from the FT line which is always good. But they really need a offensive system, which means more than 1 play.

It must have destroyed Mutoni to write a half-hearted piece on a Canadian product.

TJ Ford is developed as much as Bosh did backwards.

mutoni says:
i’m devastated. (but seriously, eboy, you guys finally won a game; shouldn’t you be cheerier than this?)

Nov.19 at 4:25 pm

TheMC5 says:
TJ Ford is NOT the reason the Raps have won 5 games. How about Jamario Moon, and Jose Calderon? Jose is a much better point guard than TJ, at least this year. TJ seems way too focused on scoring, and not nearly enough on moving the ball and making plays. It’s like night and day when Jose subs in for TJ. All of a sudden there’s ball movement and players getting open shots. Jose is also a much better defender than TJ. If I see Ford take another triple-pump, one-footed leaner from the baseline, I might kill him. Go Raps!

One win does not change one’s fortune’s, Mutoni. That’s some Zen sh*t, right there.

eboy if it destroyed Mutoni to write it, it ached me to read it too… Great to have some Canadian content on slamonline, sucks that it’s about us sucking

Walter Olivera says:
just play great D and everything will fall into place, but BOSH still won’t make the all-star team.

Nov.19 at 5:55 pm

MD says:
to all you mitchell haters in here - RELAX…his so called ’simplistic’ offense is getting players open shots…the fact that they can’t hit them is another story…they’ll come around…
that’s the thing with raptor fans- so quick to criticize one day yet the next day you’re riding the same guy’s jock…were any of you raggin’ mitchell after he put moon in the starting 5?…what about after their win over indiana?
pleasing all the parents?…that’s why garbo doesn’t get off the bench, right?

Nov.19 at 7:26 pm

Chris O says:
Garbo’s parents are probably scared as hell every time he steps on the court.

Nov.19 at 8:02 pm

Paps says:
Bosh should make the All-Star team. Canadians votes will add up for his selection. Who elese is there? KG, Oneil, Jamison, ??? He’ll make the bench for sure.

Nov.19 at 8:18 pm

Jess says:
Bosh not makingthe All-Star team…give your head a shake..what a ridiculous comment… If he doesnt start (because of KG’s move to the Eastern Conference) he will still be in New Orleans..come on now..Id have to agree with MD..easy on the Mitchell hating..come playoffs you will all be praising him again

Nov.19 at 8:38 pm

FLUXLAND says:
wow.. 10 games and the Raps are done? WOOOW.. Theres like 10 other teams with much worst problems then one player staring the season sub par. (btw Boing I don’t think that foot thing is all over with either) Meanwhile Steve and Bryant are killing Sam M. You guys working on those resumes in case the Raps call or what?

bosh aint healthy and you can tell, dude was having difficulty getting by jeff foster! he usually has a quick first step but he looked like garbajosa out there… POST-injury!

Johnnypinball says:
I have to agree with TheMC5. With Calderon in, there’s a much smoother offensive flow. TJ can fill the stat sheet, but the offense looks less forced with Jose at the helm. Sam used to give them much more comparable minutes but, as of late, has been playing TJ more and reduced Calderon’s playing time.

if i see one more game of 48 minutes high screen and roll… i’ll probably have to start watching hockey again or something.

Nov.20 at 7:32 am

Slobodan Chutzpah says:
I would be even more concerned about Bargnani. I saw maybe five Raptors preseason games, and Bargnani was playing extremely well, doing all the right things - getting rebounds, driving the ball to the cup, posting up and hitting big threes - and I was certain he’d make the leap this season. However, for whatever reason, once the season started he started playing like a rookie all over again; timid, not assertive enough, picking up fouls on defense. They better hope he soon regains his mojo, since their future success is dependent on how he develops.

Nov.20 at 10:41 am

4daluvovdagame says:
Is that Bryant ” Big Country” Reeves talking? As All teams that have success the raptors can’t sneak up on anyone anymore. It always gets more complicated when you win. Everyone has to find ways to dissect you and you have to adjust. Mitchell will find a way they don’t just give out Coach of the Year trophies to just anyone.

a friend of mine was at a club in T.O. on saturday night, Bosh was still there when my buddy left, at 2:30 a.m.!!! Maybe the Big Bosh Man would benefit from an early night when he’s got a 1 o’clock game the next day…

Nov.20 at 2:53 pm

Paps says:
Was he drinking? Plus at 23 years old your body can still do anything it wants. When your 30 it’s a different story.

I hope the haters are watching the Raps game right now. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW!! Do you guys look stupid right now! Where you at Steve? How u like Bosh now?

Nov.20 at 11:31 pm

Garrett says:
I’m watching the Raptors/Mavs game right now and Bosh travels EVERY time he makes a move with the ball. He catches it at the elbow, pump fakes a few times, then takes a loooong first step before he ever dribbles. Every time.

FLUXLAND says:
travel in the NBA? You don’t say, kind Sir!
