Spain vs. Toronto Raptors

by Marcel Mutoni

Jorge Garbajosa, the Raptors’ shaggy forward, is out indefinitely following the announcement that he’ll require more surgery on his left leg and ankle.

You may recall that the Raptors allowed Garbo to participate in the European Championships this summer only after the Spanish Basketball Federation agreed to insure him for $1 Million.

Now, the Spanish media is mad at the Raptors organization and they’re throwing accusations around. From the Toronto Star:

What is without dispute is that in Garbajosa’s native Spain, where he is a beyond-reproach hero, media coverage has been making the Toronto franchise out as the villain.

“The Raptors have a bit of a grudge (against Garbajosa),” Spanish centre Pau Gasol said a while back, summing up the Spanish spin on things.

Yes, it’s just so mean-spirited to demand insurance for one of your key assets when he asks to participate in a competition that could jeopardize his ability to fulfill his contract with the team. Get real.

(This is completely unrelated to Garbajosa and the Raptors, but it has something to do with Spain and is somewhat related to the NBA. Even more importantly, it is hilarious, hence why I’m posting it: Apparently, lucky Spaniards can now purchase small figurines of Pau Gasol relieving himself. Talk about the perfect Christmas gift!)

Holy lord: That Samuel E’to figurine is the most blatant Sambo piece I’ve seen since I watched Bamboozled. Jake, seriously, what the f*ck is up with people in Spain?

Or, to save money, all us writers and editors could poop in bags, then mail the bags along with the next issue to lucky readers. Call it a subscriber benefit.

Ryan, that was easily the most disturbing comment on this site ever. thanks.

Tenorca says:
Culture alert: That pooping Gasol is called a “caganer” which means sh*tter. The little tykes in Catalonia play some game where they find them in the nativity scene. Related is their version of Santa, named Caga Tio, which means “Sh*tting Uncle.” Its a log you hit with sticks and it defecates goodies. Spanish Christmas 2, American Christmas 0.

Sam Mitchell's Conscience says:
The Spanish media is acting ridiculous, considering that the Raptors haven’t done anything wrong. It was Garbajosa’s idea to play on his left leg prematurely, and he did it against the Raptors’ will. Remember when Europeans used to be humble in the basketball world?

Face it, Spanish people are inferior. Case closed. No offense.

Sesa says:
The only problem is Garbo’s reduced minutes, not his injuries. If he only played more minutes like last season, then it’ll all be good. Except there’s no Jamario Moon last season.

Nov.27 at 9:07 pm

Krayzie Bone says:
The reason that he’s not playing more is that everyone can blow past him with his still broke bone. He’s a liability on D, whereas last year, he could somehow make up for the fact that he’s a tweener and give you good minutes at SF. Also on offence, he wasn’t a great shooter last year, just timely, but now, with no mobility, Sam Mitchell can’t run his play.

@ Ryan : Racism in Spain is off the charts. If you follow Euro football, and I think you do, this shouldn’t be surprising.

Ryan Jones says:
I know, Z. It was just another chance for me to harass Jake, and I try never to pass those up.

Sesa says:
Somewhere along his career, Garbo will end up in Spurs. Garbo is the one who made Dirk struggle in Euro championship.

David S. says:
First thing, captain America is full of s***t.
You are the inferior one to say things like that ! Now, for the figurine of Pau or other sports star, I live in Spain (Barcelona) and it is in the tradition here for Xmas to have those figurines, it is not considered offensive, it is in the way they celebrate Xmas and the Reyes Magos. That should really not be a subject of laughter, unless you have never seen any other culture than the US one in your life…

Son of Shawn says:
I thought Captain America was dead, hey! what about the american refs?, ther aren´t news about this?, I think that´s the biggest issue in the L nowadays and ther isn´t any information.

Nov.28 at 8:48 am

Rafael says:
Just thought i’d comment on the “wish spanish people were more like americans and didn’t have racism”. This seems to imply that america isn’t racist, ignoring cases like the Jena 6, the New Orleans fiasco and thousands of other examples. Racism is a worldwide problem and, for your information, making assumptions on people simply based on their nationality/origin is a blatant example of racism.

Nov.28 at 11:08 am

Ryan Jones says:
For your information, Rafael, I dabble in sarcasm.

vmcb says:
Pau is going to want to get revenge for all his Spanish brethren by ripping the Raps apart tonight. In a loss.

Nov.29 at 12:30 pm

vmcb says:
Apparently Garbo is suffering from avascular necrosis, which is the deteriation of bone due to a lack of blood flow, or something like that. Scary stuff.
