Those $160 Million Settlements Will Get You Everytime
We all know that Michael Jordan has more money than God (he has an estimated fortune of $400 million), but even this has to smart: Black Cat’s divorce settlement is reportedly for a cool $168 Million, making it the largest celebrity divorce settlement in history by far.
From the Times of London:
As a basketball superstar, Michael Jordan was always in a league of his own. Now he is setting a record with his divorce as he prepares to pay his former wife an unprecedented settlement of more than $168m (£80m).
The settlement eclipses the most expensive celebrity divorce on public record, in which Neil Diamond paid his ex-wife Marcia Murphey £75m.
Looks like it’s time to hit the blackjack tables hard again, Mike.
In all seriousness though, Mike, we love you, but for the love of all that is holy, please don’t use this as an excuse to make yet another comeback. You can live on $200 million; it’ll be tough, but you can do it.

Anyway, eboy’s the lawyer here, not me, but what I know of divorce law, there are a lot of factors involved, including how long they’re married, how much money is earned while they’re married (no matter which of them is earning it) and that whole “standard of living” thing. If you marry someone, stay married to them 20 years and earn a billion dollars in that period, there is a reasonable legal understanding that, in the case of divorce, the money is going to be split, or close to it. It’s a partnership, theoretically, and when one person’s making all the money, that means/implies the other one is primarily raising the kids, doing the shopping, washing the dishes, etc. You can’t put a dollar value on those responsibilities, but they have a worth.
Put it another way: The guy doesn’t carry or give birth to the children, and it figures that, in this case, he probably spent a lot less time involved in hands-on childrearing. Does he have any less right to see his kids now?

Those responsibilities do have a dollar amount attached to them. For the the nannies, maids, drivers, security etc. that come with them. And the ’standard of living’ thing is definitely understandable, but often used to justify outlandish requests. These procedings always wreak of greed and revenge for both parties, but this one seems silly to me.

Men… listen to me and trust me on this. Michael will make that money back twice over within the next 5 years. He paid an excellent price to get rid of her and I know he’s glad about it. He significantly reduced his overhead in the process while retaining his name and his existing businesses and marketability. Trust me…. Mike is chillin’. It’s only us middle class dudes that’s trippin’ about the money. Also… if she’s out of his pockets completely… and I’d think that she is because of the large amount, I know he’s got other things in the works. One thing I found out after I got my divorce: YOU CAN ALWAYS MAKE MORE MONEY. And I’m happier now than I was married. Mike still has his endorsement money rolling in and his partial ownership stake in the Charlotte Bobcats. And that’s not counting what he squirreled away in Belize, the Maldives or Schelleyes all these years if he had a lick of sense. Don’t worry about Mike… that was the best 168 million he could have spent.
