BREAKING: Starbury Goes AWOL

Where, oh, where, has Stephon Marbury gone?

by Lang Whitaker

According to mulitple outlets, Stephon Marbury didn’t show up at Knicks shootaround this morning. The Post says Steph left to go home. The Daily News says Steph was upset about his role allegedly being reduced.

Isiah Thomas said, “We hope he’s at the game,” not exactly a persuasive argument that the Knicks are on top of this situation.

More as it trickles in…

Ooops.

This is how a mature team leader acts. Tim Duncan, take notes.

Sam Rubenstein says:
What took him so long?

Nov.13 at 4:05 pm

And, to repeat from the other thread: THE SHIP BE SINKIN’. David Lee and Renaldo Balkman should demand to be traded immediately

Larry says:
I guess he couldn’t accept the brutal honesty that he is not a good defender anymore

white hot eboy says:
Buyout by end of the week. New team next week.

Nov.13 at 4:18 pm

Ryan Jones says:
Glad you said that, eboy. I know there’s always a taker in pro sports, but seriously, at this point, given his off-court lunacy and diminishing returns on it, who the f*ck is going to sign Stephon Marbury?

Nov.13 at 4:18 pm

thesubwayconnection says:
Not surprising. As much as I love(d) Steph, he isn’t the best decision maker on the court, and reactions like these have plagued his career. See ya, Steph. I hope you like the mid-level exception.

Nov.13 at 4:20 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
This definitely doesn’t help his trade value. Oh well, at least he’s only on the books for another $42 million.

Nov.13 at 4:21 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Can’t the Knicks just have Z-Bo “take care” of him?

Nov.13 at 4:21 pm

Ryan Jones says:
Yeah, forgot about that $42 mil. Seriously, who?

Nov.13 at 4:21 pm

white hot eboy says:
Buyout. Then Asst. Manager at Steve & Barry’s.

Nov.13 at 4:24 pm

Ryan Jones says:
Exactly. Though I like Ass. Manager better.

Nov.13 at 4:26 pm

white hot eboy says:
Buyout. Then full-time commentor on SLAMOnline to rival white hot eboy’s daily production.

Nov.13 at 4:26 pm

hbomb says:
i like steph and he is a great point guard. but the lst few seasons he is bein an ASS. never mind ass manager

Nov.13 at 4:28 pm

white hot eboy says:
To echo Ryan, it does seem hard to believe someone would put themselves out to take on Steph but sh*t, if there’s still Kevin McHale’s in the world, brainless ball players can still find a home, ie: Antione Walker.

Nov.13 at 4:29 pm

Silky Slim says:
Is Steve Francis next? I can’t think of two all-star players that have fallen off as quickly as Marbury and Francis.

Nov.13 at 4:31 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Who would have thought that Penny Hardaway would have been the most effective and sane of the three in 2007?

Nov.13 at 4:33 pm

white hot eboy says:
The season’s still early, Russ.

Nov.13 at 4:33 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Also, I can’t wait to hear how Clyde and the Trout Wig spin this one.

Nov.13 at 4:33 pm

namik says:
Steve Francis is already on the bench. Pretty hard to reduce a role more than that. Maybe Steph will pull a Chappelle and go to the cradle of f*ckig civilization. Although somehow I doubt that. He is prolly at the 40/40 club smashed talking to his better ho…half.

Nov.13 at 4:34 pm

John E. Sanford says:
Where is Charles Oakley when you need him?

Nov.13 at 4:37 pm

Rasheedionics says:
Wait a minute! What’s all these Marbury bashing? Yea, he sucks but all he done is average 20 and 8 over his career. Yes, he says crazy things but he plays hard every night, he practices, not a problem in the locker room and never been in trouble with the law. And now y’all saying that a team would be crazy to sign him? All he needs to do is to play on the team where he can be 2 guard just like AI on Nuggets… Good luck with Nate Robinson as your starting PG.

Nov.13 at 4:38 pm

d.Y. says:
This is all part of Zeke’s grand scheme. Starbury to the Cavs (closer to God? King James?). He frustrates and confuses the LeBrons enough that he skips town and heads to the Knicks in 2010. In two years, LeBron, Z-Bo, and David Lee win the chip, save the garden, and save the world from ending in 2012 as predicted by the Mayan calender. You will never understand the sacrifices Starbury makes for us.

Nov.13 at 4:39 pm

Ryan Jones says:
You been paying much attention the last year or so, ’sheed?

Nov.13 at 4:39 pm

Ryan Jones says:
You been paying much attention the last year or so, ’sheed?

Nov.13 at 4:39 pm

Ryan Jones says:
Cool!

Nov.13 at 4:40 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Isn’t this whole thing a huge black eye for Isiah Thomas as coach/GM/president? How do you not suspend Steph immediately and indefinitely? Or, as Mr. Sanford suggested, send Charles Oakley after him with a roll of quarters in one hand and a roll of duct tape in the other.

Nov.13 at 4:40 pm

Rasheedionics says:
I don’t blame him for leaving one bit. How the hell the bench you in favor of Nate Robinson. That’s a slap in the face. There’s no way he can be respected as a man or a player on that team.

Nov.13 at 4:40 pm

white hot eboy says:
d.y., I predicted the Starbury/Cavs marriage about 7 hours ago in the other Steph post. Do I get close to GOD too for putting the idea in the mainstream? Will I get a reprieve in 2012?

Nov.13 at 4:41 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
This would have never happened if Larry Brown was still alive.

Nov.13 at 4:42 pm

Ryan Jones says:
Anyway, yeah—that career-long 20 and 8 has been more like 16 and 6 the past two-plus seasons. Not bad, but not what it was. Also, he’s super-crazy.

Nov.13 at 4:42 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Then again, remember when Clyde Frazier left the team in a huff back in ‘70 and…oh wait, Red Holzman would have cut his head off and sent it back to Atlanta in a box.

Nov.13 at 4:43 pm

Rasheedionics says:
Yes Ryan, I’ve been paying attention. I go to most of the Knicks home games. The point is that he’s willing to do what the team wants him to do. First they want to him to pass the ball, then they want him to score. His role is never defined. The man is confused as what is expected of him. I still believe he can be a great player with the good management and coaching.

Nov.13 at 4:43 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Rasheedionics is suffering from what I like to call “selective perception.”

Nov.13 at 4:46 pm

white hot eboy says:
Sheed, I agree with your last sentence. I think if Ainge can swing it, Steph would make the Celts “crazy”-deadly.

Nov.13 at 4:48 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Steph either can’t, or chooses not to, play defense. He’s nowhere near as good at feeding the post as Jamal Crawford, and even his scoring has been spotty. When things don’t go his way, he has a tendency to sulk–on the court. At some point you just have to say enough. The Nets did. The Suns did. And now it’s the Knicks turn.

Nov.13 at 4:49 pm

Jared says:
great pic posted

Nov.13 at 4:50 pm

Ryan Jones says:
“The man is confused.” You said at least one true thing there…
Anyway, re: Steph, you’re preaching to the long-ago-converted who has (or, since this applies to most SLAM folk of the late ’90s/early-mid ’00s) have pretty much completely lost their religion. Many of us have been spouting the “he can still be a great, he just needs to be in the right situation” line for literally close to a decade. We mostly look like suckers now. I have, finally, bought out my Steph loyalty. Good for you if you’re still holding out, but I don’t know how.

Nov.13 at 4:51 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
And wait, wait, WAIT. Doc Rivers is “good coaching”? Don’t get me wrong, I think Steph still has something left in the tank, and can contribute somewhere. But I think it’ll have more to do with the PLAYERS he’s with rather than the coach. He bristled under both Larry Brown and Isiah Thomas, who couldn’t be more different. At some point don’t you have to look at STEPH HIMSELF being the problem rather than all the surrounding factors?

Nov.13 at 4:53 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
And what Ryan said. I still get a hard time from both Chris Broussard and Frank Isola for saying the Nets would regret trading Steph for Kidd. I can’t WAIT until the next Knicks home game.

Nov.13 at 4:58 pm

Ryan Jones says:
If I’m a GM—and I’m not, I’m a farmer—but if I’m a GM, here are the yes-or-no questions I would ask myself when considering whether to sign/trade for Stephon Marbury:
Is he a proven postseason winner? NO
Is he on the downside of his career? YES
Is he a good locker room presence? NO
Has he clashed with previous coaches? YES
Has he clashed with previous teammates? YES
Is he a marquee box-office draw? NO
Is he good with the media? NO
Does he have a history of off-court issues? YES
About the only thing he’s got going for him is the “community involvement” with those cheap-ass shoes, which remain a nice idea, I guess. I’d argue that all of this is pretty consistent over the course of a 12-year career. And that list didn’t even include his price tag. I cannot imagine signing him to my team. Or my farm.

Nov.13 at 4:59 pm

its just alex says:
F*ck me. I didn’t think they could manage to mess this team up much worse. Shows what I know. Nate as the primary point…that scares me. I think Steph can still go somewhere else, he just needs teammates that will keep him in check and he’s gonna have to accept a reduced role.

Nov.13 at 4:59 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
And I know I said in the other thread that Steph could be a good fit in Denver or Boston. But that was before the “I’m taking my ball and going home” routine. Any team with genuine championship aspirations would be INSANE to sign him.

Nov.13 at 5:00 pm

Candice says:
I agree Ryan. This sure makes all those “in defense of Steph” conversations throughout high school and college seem like a waste. Sh*t I even defended this guy against my 7th grade history teacher back when he was with the Wolves. There have been flashes of vindication (the playoffs vs. the Spurs; when he first got to NY; the shoes) to go along with valid excuses (injuries to teammates, crappy coaches with agendas, etc.) but I can’t defend a guy who blatantly quits on his team. He’s not 19 anymore.

ab_40 says:
He’s living the dream he’s gonna play in europe this season:P haha maybe new york will buy him out and he’ll join the lakers

Nov.13 at 5:00 pm

Wow, Ryan, you made him out to seem much more horrible than I actually thought.

Nov.13 at 5:03 pm

Anyone wanna buy a home marbury jersey? It’s the expensive one, the type they play in. I bought it 3 years ago, never wore it never will.

Steph’s probably still a better parent.

maybe hes just chillin at his house in Scottsdale, they’re playing in phoenix tonight

Nov.13 at 5:15 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
All jokes aside, the whole thing is just sad. I feel like I’ve defended Steph so many times (in print and in person) and I just can’t do it anymore. It’s like the end of an era.

Nov.13 at 5:17 pm

white hot eboy says:
If Steph winds up in a better situation with a much more worthwhile organization, this may be the best “bonehead” move Steph’s made in a minute.

Nov.13 at 5:18 pm

Ryan Jones says:
Admittedly—and this inspired Lang’s just-posted Links, if you ain’t seen ‘em yet—this single instance is a bit much to inspire an avalanche of anti-Steph bile. For me, at least, it’s not about THIS story, and this story isn’t even the camel-back-breaking straw — this was just the excuse to rant. Thankfully, I never named a pet after this guy, so I can stand by my rant.

I hope Starbury goes to Boston and kills the Knicks everytime he plays us. F*ck the haters, I still ride with Starbury.

Slam’s long and dramatic love affair with Marbury has been well documented. With the majority of readers simply shaking their heads at the absurdity of it all: the constant defense of him, naming him to the top 50 dunkers of all time over so many more worthy individuals, lang naming his dog after him for pete’s sake!! Glad to hear ryan and russ are finally coming to their senses….

On the real, I think this is the way his career’s supposed to end. The man’s story is a Shakespearian tragedy. The last chapter will probably be a celebrity boxing match, or a TNA wrestling contract.

Won’t you all feel bad when you realize that Steph isn’t actually a bad teammate, he was merely kidnapped by Bulgarian Knick fans who are fed up with Zeke’s macho head games and terrible decisions and decided to take matters into their own hands. A true leader on and off the court…

Nov.14 at 2:14 am

Rob Paxon says:
I really don’t get Isaiah. He seemingly gets the guts to do what many thought he never would, and that’s taking minutes from one of his “guys”–the pet projects he’s invested so much in–to give to hungrier/better youngsters. But then he completely kid gloves your supposed team leader skipping town because his minutes are getting reduced. I can see him losing guys in the locker room if he doesn’t handle this right. I’m sure many players are long fed up with him and Isaiah’s coddling of him. If Marbury turns this punishment (for lax D) into a vacation or manages to get his minutes back, Isaiah loses any credibility he has with his players (while he has next to none with us fans, I think it’s plain to see most of the players are fully behind him).
