Too little too late, but A LOT late

I am referring to Kobe points

By Sam Rubenstein

Before I say anything else, I am eternally grateful that Holly will be writing the nightly recaps this season. The D.A.Y. is dead. Long live the D.A.Y.! We have to come up with a better name for her version of it. The only pure gimmick I’m keeping for myself is the Player of the D.A.Y., which I get to write the day after games were played, in the afternoon sometime, after plenty of time to reflect.

As for last night, the lack of Oden the first game really took the juice out of it. The Spurs are like a movie I’ve already seen, a great movie I might watch again, but you already know what’s going to happen. The most important single fact we learned last night was that yes KOBE is still going to play hard. He has too much pride or heart or ego or whatever not to. But enough of that for now, Holly’s recaps are coming real soon.

Our NBA season previews finish today. The two remaining teams are Milwaukee and Dallas. Neither one played last night. The Bucks preview has already been turned in on amazingly short notice. End of statement. I want to thank all of the writers for doing such a great job. Nothing in this world gives me more professional joy than when people turn things in. Last week Lang wrote a thing mentioning how I’ve taken over his job. Not really. I relate more to a Managing Editor’s job, like Susan Price. And speaking of other people’s work, Mutoni is travelling in the early part of the day, so I suppose I’m on Wire duty. Scratch that Managing Editor thing, if I’m on The Wire, this is who I am. McNulty, get in my office!

Alright, enough fun. Holly’s recaps coming.

Sam: eternally grateful that I get to give my recaps each night. I am sure by the time the ASG rolls around I won’t be quite as chipper, but for now I am loving it.

When Bodie finally gets around to showing up today, I have one thing to say. Told you so. I was off by about 5 points.

Kobe is ALWAYS going to play hard. It doesn’t matter for what reason he is playing hard, he is always going to do it. Under these circumstances I think it is as a ‘f*ck you Buss, I am still the best player in the league and when you trade me I’ll come out of this looking better than you’.

I can’t believe you didn’t run with my suggestion for Holly’s column. I would have thought that I would have gotten an XL t-shirt with “The Real MacKenzie” on the front by now. I guess geniuses can’t get appreciated in their lifetime.

Joel O's says:
Respect to Kobe. He shows up every night, while a lesser man in his position would just sulk and drag his feet until he got traded. A lesser man who’s only half a man… like Half Man Half Soft-Pull-Up-Jumper-In-Traffic.

Having a person’s name be part of the name of their column, I dunno about that. It’s got to have something to do with what the column is about.
And Holly, watch out for the recap burnout. Opening week is exciting, but remember it’s a marathon not a sprint.

Keith says:
Call Holly’s column ‘The Eh? today’ to celebrate her Canadian-ness.

Holly MacKenzie says:
noooooo eh.. no no no no.. I do NOT say that.. and I had a fellow journalist at the game comment on how i DONT have an eastcoast accent of any sort!! I want something short and sweet.
“CHECKMATE” popped into my head this morning.. any thoughts on that?

Oct.31 at 10:13 am

Keith says:
Why would it be ‘checkmate’? Am I missing something here?
Simply call it ‘Holly’. Then you can be known as just your first name like Paris Hilton. No wait, that’s a bad thing..

Oct.31 at 10:16 am

Holly MacKenzie says:
just because checkmate is the signal of “yeah, i got you” before you take over and win the game. not sure why it popped into my head considering i dont play chess. what about a throwback to bassy and Bron and just have it be called “The Takeover”? I’m game for going with that one Sam.

Oct.31 at 10:17 am

Holly MacKenzie says:
*not in a literal sense of “taking over” in my recapping job! aahah but i do like it, esp because it connects to Jay as well.

Oct.31 at 10:22 am

Keith says:
You can’t have ‘The take over’ Holly…that’s Agent Zero’s label.

Jared says:
how about ether?

Oct.31 at 10:23 am

Jared says:
And Joel..Kobe doesn’t show up everynight, just when the cameras are rolling…but he did show up last night, not hating

Oct.31 at 10:32 am

Keith says:
Call it ‘Encore’. You get your reference to Jay-z in there plus it’s to do with all the slamonline readers calling for you…

Holly MacKenzie says:
so keith, this is why I’m hott is mims, right? come on, Jay had it before Gil did. I didn’t even think of that actually.

Rasheedionics says:
I’m a Kobe’s fan but how did he show up last night? Because he took 32 shots? And somehow managed to miss 9(!) free throws… Jackin up 32 shots and just making 13 of them doesn’t mean he played hard or played with heart. It doesn’t mean anything. For Kobe that just means that he was present on the court… I do think his wrist is really bothering him.

Oct.31 at 10:40 am

Keith says:
True, true but now that the phrase is used in the basketball arena courtesy of Gil, it’d be a lil weird seeing it atop your column. Just my two pennies..

Oct.31 at 11:34 am

OneShot says:
May i suggest “Check It”, cause you’ve got to start somewhere and you know we will.

Ben Osborne says:
I really think Holly needs a banner asap.

jbn74sb says:
If we’re playing by the Price is Right rules, eboy, you disqualified yourself by going over. And even I have no problem saying that was about the ugliest 45 points ever scored.

jbn74sb says:
Sam - My two cents on the Player of the D.A.Y. Do it for every day of the week so we can better gauge who performs well on both Friday and Sunday, as they are usually some of the more marquee matchups.
