Steve Nash Isn’t Mad At David Stern, But He Really Is

(Sort of)

by Marcel Mutoni

We know Steve Nash as the selfless leader of the Phoenix Suns, the ultimate team-guy with no ego, and someone who always says the right thing. Unless you ask him for his thoughts on the Iraq War (or an enterprising reporter gets a hold of his reading material), Steve never seems to stray too far from the company line.

In the epic Spurs series last May, many felt that the Suns got jobbed by the League when it suspended Amare Stoudemire and Boris Diaw for game 5 (following Robert Horry’s infamous forearm shiver that sent Nash crashing into the sideboards), effectively ending a wildly entertaining series that seemed destined to go the distance.

Steve Nash (and the rest of the team) were understandably pissed off, but throughout he kept saying the right things and tried to live with the outcome. It’s been five months since the incident, and Nash - try as he might to pretend that it’s no longer on his mind - is still fuming. From the Arizona Republic:

“I’m not into worrying about what Stern is doing. I figure I’m not going to win that battle anyway. I’ve lost it in the past so why bother getting involved.”

“If I let it, it’ll distract me. I’ll be (ticked) off all the time. And that’s like every other week, a decision comes down that you don’t understand. So just stay out of it. Bowen stepped on Amaré’s ankle and kneed me in the balls. No suspension, whereas other guys (with) maybe less infractions get suspended on the first one. I’m not in the office. I don’t know why they decide what they decide. Therefore, I’m not going to even bother to start judging their decisions because I don’t get it.”

Channel that rage, young man.

Seems like a lot of people are mad at David Stern these days; wonder why that is?

(Side Note: The NBA season officially kicks off tomorrow night. After a tumultous summer that almost refused to end, I’m told we’ll get to watch real games, with something tangible at stake. Sounds like a pretty cool idea.)

And what does Steve Nash’s opinion of the matter, which happened almost half a year ago, really matter anymore? Can someone get traded already? Or jailed? This is ridiculous, who cares…whats nashty gonna get mad and rack up more assists now? Is he gonna make funnier faces? Get a crazy hair cut? It’s cool that he’s speaking out against the L because they did do him dirty…but it doesn’t change anything.

The Best Yet says:
Jared’s got a valid point. Bringing up and bitchin about instances that ocurred 5 months ago aint gonna change the fact the STAT and 3D had to sit out the most important game of the series. The Sternbot is slipping no doubt. Not penalizing gambling staff due to “outdated” rules is nonsense.
Go Suns!

Tarzan Cooper says:
what happened in the other games when amare and boris played? spurs 3-2, right? stop whining. the refs let nash keep playing even though he was gushing blood everywhere, stop whining(yes, they sat him out, but that was at the very end when it really didnt matter) THE SUNS DID NOT GET HUSTLED BY THE LEAGUE!! amare and boris made a really bad decision, and the team payed for it. if suns fans want to blame someone, blame amare and boris, or the coaches for not having better control of the bench. STOP WHINING!

i wanna kno who likes David Stern dat guy is like a Dictator of the NBA

Oct.29 at 1:57 pm

Kiyan says:
I agree that the whining needs to stop. It won’t change anything. But I think that the process which leads to a suspension needs to be changed and allow it to be more inclusive of third party point of views. Too many shady suspensions get dropped.

Oct.29 at 2:05 pm

Jared says:
i feel you tarzan, sometimes the L doesn’t make sense, like wen charlie ward gets flipped and the bench comes to his rescue, but at least they’re consistent…no leaving the bench means no leaving the bench…but stevie’s cut came at a bad time, that was crunch time and they didn’t have their general…

Look, if the Mavs would have beat the Heat in the 06 Finals, I would have chalked it up to an old fashioed ass-whipping. But since D-Wade chanelled MJ and the rest of the Heat team wok up and the refs gave Wade dozens of extra points, all I hear is that the Heat were given that title. Well guess what, all that talk stopped Lebron from getting a sniff of a win in the Finals this past season. The NBA wouldn’t have wanted to answer those questions for a second straight season if Lebron got to the line 20 times a game. So all the Spurs haters had to endure another lousy Finals series, while all the while, the Spurs just took what they felt was their’s. Kind of like what the Patriots are doing this season. The rest of the league should hope the Jets plane crashes since they woke the sleeping giant that NO ONE can match up with their cheating allegations.

Captain America says:
Steve Nash, great basketball player (and NBA representative), best to keep it that way. Besides, who wouldn’t want to be kneed in the balls by Bruce?

Oct.29 at 2:23 pm

Ryan Jones says:
Nothing is fair and everything is fixed. As the rare NBA player who actually pays attention to life outside the League and his own bank account, Steve knows this. That said, a knee in the balls is a knee in the balls.

Oct.29 at 2:24 pm

Ryan Jones says:
Or, “What Roman H said.”

tell me someone here saw the clips of Obama dancing on the Ellen show? I was flipping and I caught him stepping out and getting down. Can’t wait to see what goes down with SLAM and him.

Hoop Dreamz says:
i’d say if you’re a basketball player trying to make the league as a guard/small forward, being kneed in the balls by bruce bowen is a sign that you’ve finally made it. you’re livin’ the dream baby, quit bitchin!

Oct.29 at 2:32 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Seriously, who HASN’T been kneed in the balls by Bruce Bowen? Worry about your own team, Steve-o.

Oct.29 at 2:32 pm

white hot eboy says:
Holly, I think you just clued me into what Lang’s New Year’s mystery may be. Some type of voting/support of Obama for president campaign with a SLAM twist (hopefully not in the vein of Diddy’s Vote Or Die, either). Oh forget it, who knows, maybe he just got clued in to the Jordan 23 launch.

Oct.29 at 2:33 pm

H to the izzo says:
If I was American,I’d vote for Obama, but it would be in spite.

Oct.29 at 2:40 pm

I do think it changed the series a bit , who knows how it would have played out , but I really think they cheated not the suns but the fans out of a fair series. That is all.

Bryan says:
If you’re referring to the leave the bench rule ok whatever you can’t really argue the rule as it is.But you can argue whether or not the rule should be adjusted and after that incident it should be.For arguments sake lets say I’m a member of the goon squad and I play next to no minutes and we play the lakers and in the inbounds i just flatten Kobe in front of the LA bench Lamar Odom stands up and curses me out and goes to check on Kobe , should he be suspended?

Oct.29 at 3:00 pm

white hot eboy says:
Yes, under the current rules system, yes. And believe me Shia rules and me on the basketball court are like Isiah and Gorillaface. Since middle school, I think I’ve amassed more technical fouls in grammar school, high school, college, rec leagues, tournaments, etc. If Rasheed had a white older brother who was about a foot shorter, he’d be me.

Oct.29 at 3:02 pm

J-Bird says:
Everybody needs to stop whining about how the Suns whine! Take your own damn advice and let the Suns handle their business however they want.

Oct.29 at 3:02 pm

Bryan says:
I’m just saying its bogus. It’s a bad system and they have a right to be angry and try and get it changed. You don’t have to tell me either man I got thrown out of church league games and almost went Ron Artest on a few people in high school knocking drinks out of their hands and all I was a wild man.

Oct.29 at 3:06 pm

H to the izzo says:
I’ve only ever gotten one technical ever, but have deserved much more,I’m a charmer that way.

Oct.29 at 3:10 pm

Bryan says:
I was an instigating as*hole out there. I got a lot of techs but I was responsible for other people getting many more.Basketball is so much fun.

white hot eboy says:
And the beat goes on, Hardcore Emo-man-child. I think the best story I have from “brushes” with the officiating law came in a rec league game about 15 years ago (I was 22 and Pearl Jam was still unnoticed). I played a pretty crappy game and by the 4th quarter I was finally starting to get a rhythm with my jumper. My team was down about 8 points and one of our guys hit a 3 to cut the lead to 5 with about 2 minutes to play. On the next play, I got a tipped pass at the free throw line and had a clear line to the basket except for one defender back who has about 6 inches smaller than me (5′7 or so). I went right at him jumped about 4 feet from the basket went up and over him (ballbag about his neck level) scored the basket and heard the whistle for the and 1. I’m thinking with the free throw we’d only be down two and we’d have momentum for the end of the game but as I turned to walk to the free throw line, I saw the official on the far side (backcourt) motioning to the scorekeeper that it was a charge and not a block. I went into Vernon Maxwell fury mode. I ran top speed at him from the free throw line, threw my cheap-ass reversible jersey into the stands as I charged and cursed him out for about 2 full minutes until my guys had to pull my much thinner frame than today off the court. It wasn’t until I got outside that I came to realize that my jersey I threw into the crowd hit my then-girlfried smack in the face about 8 rows up in the bleachers and I was on cut-off duty for a bout a week. My aim should have been that good all game. Oh, those were good times.

It’s because he is white

Oct.29 at 3:22 pm

Tarzan's Jane says:
I feel ya too Tarzan. Consistancy is what the L lacks. So stop the boo hooin. Like when certain athletes do something in the off season and get 2 game suspensions that had nothing to do with playing the game off bball, but I guarantee it’s all about the player. Pit two players doing the same offense. I am for certain one is treated harsher then the other. WTF?

Oct.29 at 3:23 pm

H to the izzo says:
You think that’s bad Eboy,an old coach of mine who is well respect around the country and played at a high level once got seven technicals in one game, and he wasn’t even playing. He got seven techs from just coaching and after that it got ugly

Oct.29 at 3:26 pm

PlanetOrange says:
If you don’t like the “whining”, then tell the reporters to stop asking the questions. Bottom line is, Stern is an azz and Nash is calling him on it. I don’t see where the problem is.

Oct.29 at 3:26 pm

Tarzan's Jane says:
I am with ya too Tarzan. Too much cryin and whining. Listen, the L isn’t consistant. Deal or do something. Either way, play the game.

Oct.29 at 3:28 pm

white hot eboy says:
Seven in a game? Is there no limit on the Emerald Isle?

Oct.29 at 3:29 pm

H to the izzo says:
The limit is two and you have to leave the gym but he refused. So the ref gave him seven and then there was a brawl.Good times

Oct.29 at 3:31 pm

white hot eboy says:
I wish that happened here more often. When it does, it’s usually national news and then it’s followed by a news report of how inner-city kids are easily swayed by rappers and poor influences in the media.

Oct.29 at 3:32 pm

Bryan says:
One time in high school I got a team 6 techs in a row which enabled us to win the game and the first seed in our conference tournement.

Oct.29 at 3:33 pm

H to the izzo says:
My coach had a pretty influential job in the media so luckily it didn’t,plus there isn’t any actual evidence of it anyway

Shia, why do I get the feeling your emo-man rage is somehow displaced and causes you to go into red-skinned fury which causes your quasi-retarded Brad Pitt appearance to take on the form of a blond haired bottle rocket and then you break in to manical laughter at the opposing players which makes them want to bust your ass that much more.

I’m a lot bigger than Nate.

Oct.29 at 3:59 pm

H to the izzo says:
I think Nate is a bigger insult so we’ll stick with that

Oct.29 at 4:00 pm

white hot eboy says:
will you, sorry. And although you may be taller, Shia, your game is probably equally as small as little buddy.

Oct.29 at 4:02 pm

Bryan says:
Nate would light you up buddy.

Eboy=human cigar that Nate Robinson puts in his mouth. See Shia, that just doesn’t sound right, sicko.

Oct.29 at 4:19 pm

Weirdo.

Oct.29 at 4:22 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
If Steve Nash is gonna be so angry and Canadian, maybe he should look into joining the NHL. The San Antonio Spurs are the 2007 NBA champs. That’s the way it is, that’s the way it always will be. Accept it and move on. (That goes to everybody, by the way.) And if you’re gonna be mad at anybody, be mad at Boris and Amare for being unable to control themselves and the coaching staff for not restraining them. Maybe even at Nash himself for exagerrating the effect of Horry’s hip check. Want revenge, fellas? Win it all THIS year.

Oct.29 at 4:24 pm

white hot eboy says:
Russ just made me feel proud to be an American. And his last two sentences pretty much sums up the whole enchilada.

Oct.29 at 4:26 pm

Tarzan Cooper says:
i could have sworn i already said what russ just said. playgarizing(sp?) bastard

Oct.29 at 4:26 pm

Bryan says:
I agree with everything I Russ said..I just think they have a right to be angry not b*tch about it.Be angry and channel it Patriots style and f*ck everyone up this year and go about your business.

Oct.29 at 4:30 pm

white hot eboy says:
Shia, there’s a bid difference between what the Suns do and what the Patriots do. The differences? The Patriots have a rock-solid championship pedigree and their team is built on solid defense to go with incredible offense. Phoenix has neither of those things in their favor. And that’s their Achilles until they prove otherwise.

Oct.29 at 4:31 pm

white hot eboy says:
*big

Oct.29 at 4:37 pm

Bryan says:
I’m just using that as an example of how to channel anger, not comparing their bodies of work.

Oct.29 at 4:43 pm

white hot eboy says:
Shia, are there really ANY players on the Suns that you would cower in fear from because of their anger? After Holly’s piece today, they seem tamer and more friendly than the Care Bears. And that’s what most champions have, some hate, swagger, don’t give a fu*k wht everyone thinks, etc. Think of the past champs. They all meet those criteria. The Suns have none of that permiating their roster. The only one was Kurt Thomas, and he’s gone with the wind now.

Oct.29 at 4:43 pm

white hot eboy says:
*make you cower

Oct.29 at 4:50 pm

Tarzan Cooper says:
amare would make me cower, esp. if the reports of him fully recovering are true. but they need more than just one guy. they need oak.

Oct.29 at 4:51 pm

Bryan says:
I wouldn’t wanna piss off Amare by any means. But you’re right the rest of them not so much…But are you scared of Tom Brady angry or Randy Moss?

Oct.29 at 5:08 pm

FLUXLAND says:
“following Robert Horry’s infamous forearm shiver that sent Nash crashing into the sideboards” wow! wow! wow! Let’s get the facts straight here, you mean: “following Roberts Horry’s infamous light, involuntary arm twitch that sent Nash into his Oscar winning performance of a person having a seizure/ being involved in a head on collision with a semi” —
