Prepare for Ricky Davis, Miami

by Marcel Mutoni

The Miami Heat didn’t have the most pleasant of offseasons. Their starting shooting guard isn’t expected to be back on the court until January, one of their forwards was robbed at gunpoint (which didn’t deter him from trying to reach Oliver Miller-esque levels of gluttony), and they addressed their point guard problems by signing … Smush Parker.

The outlook for the Heat may not necessarily be sunny, but management is trying to make things better (in the scoring and being-in-shape department, at least). According to ESPN’s Marc Stein, the Miami Heat are close to landing Ricky Davis and Mark Blount in exchange for Antoine Walker, Michael Doleac and Wayne Simien.

Minnesota initially balked at taking back Walker in the deal, sources said, but it’s believed that the Heat will send the Wolves at least one future draft pick to push the trade through.

Davis should provide Miami with some of the scoring it needs while Wade recovers from shoulder surgery, and with coach Riley’s disdain for Walker being well documented, this sounds like a winner of a deal for Miami.

As for Minny and its fans, prepare yourselves for the blubbery shimmy!

Update: According to Ira Winderman of the Sun-Sentinel, it’s a done deal.

that would be good for miami tho. really hurts tricky ricky’s fantasy value once dwade gets up for the 58th time.

I will now mail Kevin McHale my broken Super NES and I fully expect him to send me a working PS2 back. And he better pay all the shipping costs, too.

white hot eboy says:
Damn Mutoni, I hope you are exagerating the “out till January” line. I thought it was 3 weeks into November, max. I like Blount as the backup to Haslem, too. Walker will be well prepared for the long Minnesota winter with his extra blubber, so that’s a win-win for him.

Oct.24 at 1:54 pm

Justin says:
Actually, it is Ricky’s second run in Miami.

Oct.24 at 1:56 pm

Justin says:
Heat still needs someone aside from Ricky and the original Eboy to shoot the long ball.

Oct.24 at 2:01 pm

jawn says:
kevin mchale is trash. james for howard, now tricky ricky and blount for toine, doleac, and simien? why? I like minny’s youth but for all that is holy, why is mchale bringing in these god awful vets?

Oct.24 at 2:02 pm

white hot eboy says:
Smush can make three’s, and I think that they’re still working for another deal for a consistent shooter.

Oct.24 at 2:02 pm

its just alex says:
Good one, Eboy. I like Ricky in Miami. Shaq and Riles will keep him in check and he can contribute to the offense (or at least throw up shots) while Wade is out. And I personally feel that the less I have to see of the ‘Toine shimmy on national tv, the better.

Oct.24 at 2:08 pm

white hot eboy says:
I actually think the Toine shimmy total in Miami was about 3. In 2 full seasons. And one was in the 4th quarter of Game 6 against the Mavs.

Oct.24 at 2:12 pm

Rasheedionics says:
That’s a steal for Miami. Have no idea what Minny is thinking just giving away their best player. I’m all for youth movement but where do you think Miami’s 1st round pick is going to be? Mid 20’s… That’s not going to help them.

Oct.24 at 2:13 pm

its just alex says:
Oh I didn’t mean the dancing. I meant his jiggling blubber when he “ran” down the court.

Oct.24 at 2:16 pm

garrett says:
This trade works out well for both teams! Miami acctually makes a good offseason move and Minny gets that much closer to achieving their goal of assembling the worst team in the league!

Oct.24 at 2:20 pm

Bryan says:
Tricky Ricky Hell.Yeah.

Oct.24 at 2:20 pm

white hot eboy says:
It’s still not official yet, boys. I held out hope for Mo Williams and Charlie Bell, too and we all saw where they wound up.

Oct.24 at 2:21 pm

Chris O says:
Great fat jokes on Walker by everyone. I can’t even bring anything else to the table. Walker would eat it anyway.

Oct.24 at 2:36 pm

Allenp says:
Good trade. Ricky Davis has talent and Blount is a good complement to Shaq with his shooting.

Oct.24 at 2:41 pm

Cheryl says:
Yeah, don’t jinx it. If McHale or any of his elves read this site, they’ll know how crazy they are for trading Buckets for Shimmy. Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh….

Oct.24 at 2:45 pm

Justin says:
eboy, what about Juwan and GP in 96?

Oct.24 at 2:47 pm

Myles Brown says:
Dear Kevin, DO NOT MAKE THIS TRADE! Love, Myles. Bye.

Oct.24 at 2:47 pm

Captain America says:
Blount is the tallest point guard in the League. Ask him for a rebound or block shot….heh? Ricky Davis turned over the ball 7 times last night versus Indiana in 35 minutes and shot 4-17 and 1-4 from the 3-point line. For Minne this is adding by subtraction. Maybe we can get some team play.

Oct.24 at 2:48 pm

white hot eboy says:
See, Justin, something can still go wrong. Like Antoine weighing the plane down and crashing into the Blue Ridge Mountains or eating one of the planes wings he mistakenley viewed as a big plate of chicken and waffles.

Oct.24 at 2:51 pm

Cheryl says:
It Is Done.

Oct.24 at 2:52 pm

Captain America says:
Anyone know about the terms of Walker’s contract?

Oct.24 at 2:55 pm

Captain America says:
Never mind, Walker is in the 2nd year of a 3-year contract.

Oct.24 at 3:11 pm

Captain America says:
Done deal in Minne. Good luck Miami with Blount’s bloated guaranteed contract.

Oct.24 at 3:19 pm

white hot eboy says:
I’d rather have Blount’s than Walkers.

Oct.24 at 3:22 pm

albie1kenobi says:
peteb has the best analogy for this trade. there’s gotta be some sort of financial reason for this trade because basketball wise it doesn’t. at least for the wolves anyway.
also i was playing as rockets on 2k8 last night, and after the game ended, i realize i had mike james on my roster. i bet the wolves and rockets wish they hadn’t done that swap.
speaking of rockets, where’s mutombo now? has he signed with houston?

Oct.24 at 3:23 pm

Chris O says:
You get a lot of things with Walker (a jolt to the local buffet community, someone who thinks of the trey any time he crosses halfcourt, shimmying that stopped being cool in 1991), but team play isn’t going to be one of them.

Oct.24 at 3:24 pm

Hass777 says:
ricky buckets ..what superhero name will shaq give him…?how about starscream…oh thats kobe..lol

Oct.24 at 3:37 pm

Cheryl says:
The follower says Jefferson and Blount didn’t get along, and Blount’s contract is longer than Walker’s. The also get a conditional first rounder, which Riley rarely uses anyway. Nice move, Pat.

Oct.24 at 3:42 pm

Steve O says:
Mark Blount will lead the league in attempted rebounds. Still a good trade though.

Oct.24 at 3:45 pm

Cheryl says:
He’s a 3rd string center, this year at least. Hopefully we’ll keep Slaughter to back up Haslem.

Oct.24 at 3:46 pm

Mendel says:
Walker needs to find his way back to the Celtics to finish what him and Paul started.

Oct.24 at 3:48 pm

whooo! says:
you’re already the worst team in the league before the season starts, and you don’t care, b/c you have some young talent you hope can improve. so you bring in the veteran leadership of a guy who chucks 3s cuz there are no 4 pointers, and is so disciplined he eats anything he sees. can’t wait for the veteran leadership to kick in on these young kids. oh, and he has a ring and tons of cash to show what lack of hard work can get you.

Oct.24 at 3:58 pm

Allenp says:
The tradeded Doleac, Simien and Walker for Ricky Davis, Blount and a pick. There is now way possible this could be a good trade for Minnesota. They are getting less talented versions of the same players back in exchange for Davis and Blount. Davis and Blount may be headaches, but come on. Kevin Mchale is clearly the worst GM in basketball. It’s not even close between he and Isiah. Look at the Knicks roster changes since Isiah has taken over and please tell me they haven’t been better than Mchale’s decisions in the same timeframe.

Oct.24 at 4:15 pm

Jas says:
Great trade for Miami. They get a prolific scorer in Ricky and a decent center in Blount. Dunno what Minny was thinking.

Oct.24 at 4:50 pm

jbn74sb says:
Minnesota is getting Ricky away from Jefferson.
They are also trying to lose, perhaps so they can go after OJ Mayo.
Perhaps they will buy out Antoine, who will promptly sign with the Sizzler Shooters of the CBA for free access to Sizzler for life.

Oct.24 at 5:11 pm

ab_40 says:
yah antoine is still better then scalabrine buy him out SOTA!!!:P good trade fot miami minnesot I don’t know if you want the entire boston team without PP on your team to build your future and If toine plays there he’s gonna lead the leaug in field goals attempted haha 4 sho

its done

Oct.24 at 5:34 pm

Mark Z says:
I have my doubts that Ricky and Blount can contribute. Maybe Riles & Shaq can straighten them out. And Antoine? No idea. I guess he can back up Al. Weird. How many Celts has McCale traded for in the past couple of years? 10 by my count. What is Ainge putting in Kevin’s Kool Aid? Walker
Jefferson
Gomes
Green
Telfair
Ratliff
Davis
Blount
Justin Reed
Marcus Banks

Mark Z good post. may as well start calling the wolves “Celtics’ junkyard”.

Oct.24 at 6:51 pm

rob says:
toine is out of the league

Oct.24 at 7:27 pm

Captain America says:
Obviously you folks don’t study stats sheets. Mike James was a dud last season, and a selfish one at that. T’Wolves have added by subtraction. This move gives Foye and McCants room at SG, where Foye will share duties at PG with Telfair. Theo at center (4 swats yesterday) with Jefferson, Madison and Doleac to alternate as back-up center. SF will be divided up between Gomes and Brewer with Gomes doing back-up at PF. I don’t see a spot for Gerald Green. Does anyone serious think that Mark Blount and his 3 year left guaranteed $20M is anything but a poor SG faux center.

Oct.24 at 8:34 pm

Joel O's says:
Whoa. Great trade for Miami. Whatever you say about Ricky Davis, dude can score.

Oct.24 at 8:34 pm

David says:
Maybe McHale is a practical joker like Andy Kaufman. He and his buddies are behind the scenes, rolling around laughing. “I can’t believe they’re still paying me millions of dollars. Did you see how Forbes thinks I’m the best GM!” “Wait wait - shhhh! - Okay so you want Ricky Davis. Hmmm… How about - pffft (shhhh!) - ahem…Walker, Simien [from the back “Doleac!” hahahaha] and, heh, Doleac. A pick? Yeah, sure throw that in. [click] Oh my God they’re going to do it!”

Oct.24 at 9:19 pm

Rob Paxon says:
Minny clears more salary and I read that Jefferson and Blount had some problems. Throw in the 1st and in the end it isn’t TERRIBLE for Minny considering that it frees up more minutes for young players and they’re gonna suck either way. Great deal for Miami though.

Oct.24 at 10:26 pm

Captain America says:
McHale said the dealin’ ain’t done. Look for a “deal within the deal”. Great stats line for Buckets yesterday: 4-17 PGM-A, 1-4 3PG-A, and 7 turnovers. Oh, and by the way, Ricky said he planned to cover the KG points lost in the trade. Look for Ricky to do massive shots to now cover for Wade. Enjoy Miami, Buckets.

we just need bibby now, but how?

Oct.24 at 11:34 pm

Kayce Online says:
this is arbitrary is hell, but i’ve always had high hopes for Telfair since he arrived in the L and i think he’d thrive in the Suns system.. seems he’s already more motivated than he used to be a couple years ago. i don’t think the salaries would match up perfectly, but let’s jus say the Suns would give Banks back to make this happen.. seeing as i don’t think i’ll have much to look forward to in terms of the Miami Heat this year, i’ll jus hope this happens so i can watch Telfair play for my 2nd favourite team =)

Oct.24 at 11:37 pm

Kayce Online says:
PS. while i’m dreaming, think there’s any chance Memphis would part with Mike Miller in exchange for Blount, Wright & Parker? Miami’s def still a deal or two away from having a realistic chance i’d say.. i jus don’t expect Shaq to stay healthy all year, and at this point I have no idea how the rest of that team could possibly even be .500 without Wade..
