Amare and His Damn Knees Again

by Marcel Mutoni

The good news, if you can call it that, is that it’s not the same knee which he had microfracture surgery on in 2005, causing him to miss almost the entire 2006 campaign.

This morning in Phoenix, Amare Stoudemire will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right knee; an MRI revealed “a loose body” in the knee. Last April, Stoudemire had an arthroscopic proecudre done on the same knee to remove debris and a cyst.

Steve Kerr, the new Suns GM, is trying to stay optimistic in light of this somewhat shocking news, and even hints at the star forward being ready for the season opener. From the East Valley Tribune:

Steve Kerr said results from an MRI taken Sunday clearly showed what the problem is — and the team is confident Stoudemire with miss just two to three weeks and has a good shot at being ready for the Nov. 1 season opener at Seattle.

“The pictures are totally different this time. It’s obvious to anyone who looks at the pictures what is causing the inflammation and what needs to be done,” Kerr said. “He is confident that this will be a routine procedure and given Amaré’s age and great condition that he will bounce back very quickly.

“We’re not going to be stupid about it. Right now, we’re expecting him to be ready for the opener. But if he’s not, that’s fine, we’ll take every precaution.”

It’s important to keep in mind that when Amare underwent the dreaded microfracture procedure - which, except for a slight loss in explosiveness, he had fully recovery from last season - it had started out as a “simple scope” too.

This could end up being just a routine operation, or it could signal an end to the Suns’ title hopes this season before it even starts.

I really hope it is just a routine cleaning. Didn’t they say something like that for Oden? Oh and 1st

Keith says:
The Suns will come through this test as they have done every other test thrown their way. Never write them off. Unless they face the Spurs, in which case write the off completely.

I really hope the suns win it for Grant Hill , he was my first ever favorite NBA player, well he and Penny Hardaway.

Allenp says:
So, the Suns could have had KG, who while older, has had far fewer serious injuries. They chose to stay with Amare for his possible future benefit. But, what if Amare’s knee problems are chronic and his future returns begin to diminish at roughly the same time that KG begins to fall off. It will be interesting if the sports media remembers the debate over Amare and KG if this occurs. Although I would have traded for KG because of his defense and rebounding, I don’t think it was really stupid of the Suns not to do it. However, I didn’t think it was stupid of the Mavs to let Nash walk and we all see how that is now viewed.

He should switch with Oden’s knee

This makes me want to watch some youtube of Amare’s first two years in the L. As for what the team’s saying, I’ve never heard of knee surgery being that simple.

Which dies first this season: Grant Hill’s ankle or Amares knees? Someone in vegas needs to put this on the board.

t4inc says:
Look at it from the bright side: at least the Suns can sell Marion backing-off his trade demands now that he could possibly get Amare’s touches…

Oct.2 at 11:42 am

Hisham says:
probably not, Keith, probably not.

Hisham, where’s your link leading me to? It says it ‘can’t be found’..

Paniscus says:
I know I’m flogging a dead horse, but I’m with the camp that says PHX should’ve traded STAT for KG. I think that the team only goes as far as Nash goes, and that they need to win NOW rather than save STAT’s potential for LATER. Yeah, they’d miss STAT 5 years from now, but at least they’d be able to use their tears to polish their rings.

Oct.2 at 1:28 pm

Jukai says:
I think the idea is, in two years Amare’ll be better than KG and Nash’ll still be at his top

Oct.2 at 1:38 pm

Rubens says:
don’t worry people Dr. Kerr have spoken!

Oct.2 at 1:44 pm

Gerard Himself says:
Will this mean Shawn Marion won’t go anywhere for a while? He’s one of the few good rebounders left on the Suns squad.

Oct.2 at 5:44 pm

SwingMan says:
Mutoni, you couldn’t find any damn time to write a game 5 recap for the Suns/Lakers series this year - because of the Lakers’ embarassing showing and the fact that, being a Laker fan, you might’ve been too overcome with grief because of it is my guess - but when dirt shows up with my Suns (Matrix, this) you’re Johnny on the spot? Nice balance….. A day or two on crutches, 2-3 weeks out, no damn microfracture, no doom and gloom to pounce on, so kindly back the f*ck off: http://www.azcentral.com/sports/suns/articles/1002amaresurgery.html

Oct.2 at 5:53 pm

Holly MacKenzie says:
SwingMan: You DO realize that any basketball fan felt a wave of sickness when they heard the words Amare and surgery, right? It doesn’t matter what team you cheer for, having a player, especially a great talent have to deal with obstacles such as injuries is the worst part of sports. I am a devote Lakers fan myself, but, come on, I don’t think Mutoni was “pouncing” on PHX fans, rather giving the news on a story that WILL be one of the most watched because of Amare’s history. Thanks for the link, Lord Knows I am happy it was successful, but you’ve gotta understand what this site is about. We deliver news, not “dirt” on your suns, important news that any basketball fan would want to know. If you remember, we had the same type of article up about Oden’s surgery only 2 weeks ago. Unfortunately for him, we didn’t get a post with an article deeming the scope a success. Be thankful your boy is okay and that you get to watch another exciting year of basketball, I know I am.

Oct.2 at 6:01 pm

SwingMan says:
Understood, Holly. If only all Laker fans were as civil & level-headed….. My apologies….. But I’m still waiting on that game 5 recap, Mutoni…..LOL!

Oct.3 at 5:18 am

Sesa says:
The Suns won’t win a title until Amare is willing to learn, play some defense and be the anchor of the Suns defense together with Raja Bell instead of just being the scorer. Why is he refusing to get his game to the next level? He said that he wanted a ring…

Oct.4 at 5:22 pm

Allenp says:
Why do poeple always call on Amare to play defense and never on Nash? I mean, there is no physical reason why Nash should be so bad on defense. So, therefore it’s all mental.
