The Wrath of Hubie Brown

Kevin Broom wrote an excellent blog entry about the time then-Grizzlies coach Hubie Brown exploded on him after the reporter asked a fairly innocuous question. Simmer down, old man.

I love Hubie as a color man.

Crazy—I was actually in the Memphis lockerroom when this happened. It was quite a scene, and Hubie’s meltdown did seem to come from nowhere. However, I remember Hubie’s words a little differently. What he actually said was, “Bring me some motherf*ckin’ iced-tea!” In retrospect, I think we all know exactly what he meant.

Did he say “COME AFTER ME! I’M A GROWN MAN! I’M 80 YEARS OLD!”

Reggie Evans says:
ok, I just finished reading the article. Hubie was pissed because he knows the ramifications of a question like “Why can you win with young players while the Wizards have to wait for their youngsters to develop?”. It pits him against another coach. It’s a question, when answered, that will make the other coach look bad. Hubie is old school, and he’s smart enough not to go for a question like that. While I would not have reacted so vehemently, it WAS a chickensh-t question. It’d be like asking a player “why are you so much better than other players?”. The headline would be “SO-and-SO says he’s better than all the other players”.

It would be cool if Hubie literally exploded.

Quick question for you journalist, how often does this type of behavior happen against a reporter in an NBA locker room?

Ben Osborne says:
Not very often, Adrian, at least that I’ve seen (10-15 games/season for the last 10 years). Hubie was usually pretty awesome with the media, and his press conference after he got elected to the Hall of Fame (which I was at), was probably the best I’ve ever attended.

Hubie had a good point though: Post-entry passes really SHOULD be made from the foul line extended… so much easier than trying to force it in from the top of the key.

Thanks for the comments about my incident with Hubie. No, he didn’t take my pen. Probably because it was one of those crappy things you get 10 for 50 cents on sale at Office Depot. I concur with Ben Osborne — incidents like that are pretty rare. I saw a player go off on Jack McCallum once, but that’s the only “explosion” I’ve seen. And, (as I wrote in the comments on my blog), I think Reggie Evans comment is exactly right. In retrospect, I should have asked the question more generally, and left out the team specifics. I think I would have gotten a very good answer from Hubie, and I would have learned something about the game. But I phrased the question poorly, and he knows enough about how media works to “know” what I was up to. He was wrong in this case — no matter what he said, I wouldn’t have done a “Hubie Says the Wizards Are Immuature Punks” headline. But I can fully understand why he might have thought I might. All of which plays into the fact that I still like Hubie. I should have asked the question better.
