Phil Jackson Wants Ch-ch-ch-anges
The newly-minted Hall of Fame coach would like to see a taller basket and a larger court. While we’re at it, Phil did not add, let’s allow the coaches to smoke on the bench.

The traditionalist in me says, “Phil needs to stay off the pipe.” But, the practical side of me thiks he does have a point. It is too easy for players to get to the basket with a couple of giant steps and dunk the ball — see exhibit A. LeBron James. Maybe with a higher basket (11ft?) and wider court, we see a return of the mid-range jumper and real post moves, like the skyhook. OK, so maybe I’m having a 80s flash-back — I’m so on the fence on this one.

This post, to me, is a ‘meh’ post. I don’t have an opinion either way.

I still have to put a comment on here though…

This tells me that basketball has evolved, but Phil is still playin’ for the Knicks.

higher baskets might be a good idea. With the way the players have changed physically its just to easy. The fact that dwight howard can actually kiss the rim is just wrong

Let’s put laser beams and land mines on the court too. And put the shot clock to five seconds. That game would be off the hizzy!

A bigger court and taller basket would return game play to how it used to be when players could not jump as high or run a fast. Purists would love that.

I have the utmost respect for Phil Jackson, but this is ridiculous.

Hey Phil, if you want to have higher baskets, the League have to give, about 200 try to Nate in the next dunk contest.

Larger court, yes. Make it wider and longer, at least so the three-point line is 23-9 all the way around. Players ARE bigger and faster, so give ‘em more room. Higher rims, NO. Not interested in watching guys learn how to shoot all over again.

Agree with Russ on both counts. But it should be a bit larger than just a few inches. And I am not against an eventual increase in rim height: i can foresee it being called for in about 10-15 years. In almost all other sports, the overall increase in an athlete’s size is less noticable. But a basketball court is really crowded, more so since the premium on tall players means more long players. Maybe start the trend in the NBA first, yknow.

Screw it, make it as big as a football field.

Didn’t MTV try this experiment in Rock n’ Jock B-Ball III? I remember Bill Bellamy hitting a 25-point shot in the 20-foot hoop to cap a miracle comeback at the buzzer.

The shooting in the NBA is bad enough as it is.Nobody wants to see even more missed shots.Although I guess it might encourage people to get to the rim more, since they’d have no chance of hitting otherwise.

even for myself when i play, i’d like there to be a bit more space in the corners, so considering the fact that the guards operating in the corners are 6′4 to 6′6 on average, i’m def not opposed to widening the court by a couple feet.. can’t see the NBA even thinking about raising the hoops though, that changes the entire game completely.. changes rebounding, changes shotblocking, etc..
