Oden’s Knee Surgery: Nothing to Worry About?
Very few people saw the news of Greg Oden’s exploratory arthroscopic knee surgery coming. Practically nothing had been written about Oden’s knees prior to yesterday - he was perfectly healthy in his pre-draft workouts - and the news came as a bit of a shock.
One of the few individuals on the planet who knew this was coming is Mike Barrett, a play-by-play announcer for the Blazers. From his blog:
Last Thursday, after the team’s morning running session, Oden complained of some pain in his right knee. I saw him sitting out of the team’s pick-up games, and learned a while later that there was some swelling as well. Taking the same precautions they would with any player, management decided the best way to check this out would be to have an MRI on the knee.
That’s basically it. There just isn’t anything more to report at this time. There also isn’t any reason to think this is more serious at this time. I can also tell you that it isn’t believed that any of this was a pre-existing problem.
Is this the case of a Portland-based guy trying to calm the nerves of Blazer fans everywhere, or is the cut-up really nothing to fret over? We’ll find out soon enough, but anytime knee surgery and first overall draft pick are in the same sentence, it’s never cause for celebration.

arthroscopy technically is a surgery, but it actually does not repair anything. they just want to see what the MRI does not show.

What would be the incentive of the guy just calming nerves? He says “it isn’t believed” which means they (not him) actually don’t think anything’s going to be wrong. On the other hand, I don’t really see the sanity behind cutting open your dude’s knee just to make sure nothing’s wrong.

Irrespective of GO’s knee issues, I don’t see him being a major contributor in year 1. Bigs take some time to develop.

Also, why would the Durant pick be looking better now? Durant always had more skills, just less god-given physicality.

It seems it’s a Blazers thing…Drafting high potential centers who get injured shortly after: Walton, Sabonis,…hope Greg won’t be the next one.

Holly MacKenzie says: Knees scare the crap out of me. Lets hope this is all a scare. And again say Thanks that Amare turned out okay.
Yeah this happened to my best friend…sore knee, always swollen, some random popping and grinding noises…turned into meniscal damage as well as tearing of the articular cartilage and what a mess that was. 2 scopes later a lot of grinding every time there was a movement on defense and a painful season to make it through.

thats exactly my point. Neither were Allan houston or Penny. Then there is John Stockton who played major minutes after getting the surgery and Kidd who has recovered as well. It is a tricky deal, you don’t know for certain how things are going to turn out and I’m just saying I am thankful that we all get to witness Amare suit up and play the rest of his career.

@ mo: i just like durant better. that’s all.

Jukai says:
No, Mo’s point was sort of dumb. The Durant pick looks better cause if Portland had picked the guy who doesn’t either foul or injure himself on every play, they would have been 1 up in this situation.

He needs to quit getting hurt and get to work. Now I know as a person who gets hurt a lot you can’t control whether you get hurt or not, it just happens. I wish him luck and hope he has a great carrer.

That sounds identical to what was said prior to Amare having his MRI and finding out he needed to have microfracture surgery.

That is terrible news for Oden and Blazers fans. Blazers just can’t seem to get a break…first Bowie over Jordan and now 20 years later Oden over Durant. This is looking bad though its still early. Here’s hoping Oden makes a speedy recovery.

holly - you’re talking (Amare, Kidd, etc. vs Oden) about two very different procedures: exploratory and microfracture. They aren’t even close to each other in terms of potential damage, recovery time, purpose, etc.

One problem…this article doesn’t mention surgery, just an MRI…which is just an x ray and doesn’t involve any cutting. Given that this article is from last week, i guess that MRI turned something up which needed surgery. Not good, any way you look at it.

I know about knee surgery… I had 2… blew my ACL twice.. in the old days even ACL tear was ok to play with. In case you are following the Eurobasket, you should know that Greece coach Yiannakis played for 20 years without a right ACL, and he was one of the best players to ever play the game in europe. Dont make a big fuss over an examination. Hope GO has nothing, I like the kid a lot

The silver lining is….if Oden misses alot of time this year due to injury, that gives Portland an even better chance to pick up OJ Mayo or Derrick Rose next year.
