Leadership Questions
Say you’re one of the ten best players in the League. An All-Star for as long as you want to be one, one of the few guys who can just go by their first names, and not to mention, the reigning MVP. If you’re this person, the criticism that you can expect from your own camp, especially from your head coach, is usually the mild (and often meaningless) kind: You should look for your teammates on the offensive end more often, you could play a little more defense, etc.
I can’t recall the last time a superstar player was called out by his coach regarding his leadership abilities. This, however, is exactly what happened to Dirk Nowitzki when Avery Johnson recently did a Q&A with Eddie Sefko of the Dallas Morning News:
What does Dirk Nowitzki have to do this year to improve on an MVP season?
Dirk can get better, and there are some things that Dirk can improve in that may not be basketball-related. It may be leadership-related. Dirk can get better on and off the court. And that’s why I’ve been stretching him…And his stretching may not be necessarily on the court, but it may be in the area of leadership, and we’re willing to help him get better in that area.
That’s certainly one way to motivate your main guy. But to call him out in the press like that? I don’t know…

since avery used to be a player himself, i would assume he has already adressed these issues with dirk.. which means he’s not calling him out through the media, but ALSO telling the media what he thinks dirk needs to work on.. dirk and avery have probably (hopefully) had this talk already.

WAHHHHHHH!!!!! My coach says I could try and step up to be a better leader. WAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!! I choke in EVERY big game in my career. WAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!! I’m the MVP, but people think I’m horrible. The best question to ask is, when was the last time a white player has won 3 MVP awards in a row besides the current German/Canadian regime?

H to the izzo says:
You seem surprised Eboy.Is there a point in trying to develop Dirk into a leader if he just isn’t a leader. They could have signed someone like DFish who could have captained and lead the team
Sep.17 at 1:10 pm
Russ Bengtson says:
If Dirk has choked in EVERY big game in his career, how the heck did they make it to the Finals? Or win the MVP, for that matter? Methinks some doth protest too much.
Sep.17 at 1:10 pm
Hisham says:
they need a better team shrink. i wonder what happened in dirk’s younger years that traumatized him so badly that craps himself in a dark corner everytime he needs to step up and prove he’s worth said crap
Sep.17 at 1:12 pm
Hisham says:
it’s not that he chokes in every big game, but that supposedly lesser opponents can easily beat him with simple mindgames.. they could’ve swept miami, and they should’ve swept golden state..
Sep.17 at 1:17 pm
Ryan Jones says:
We criticize coaches and athletes for not telling the truth and saying what they really think. Then, when one of them actually does say what’s on their mind, we kill them for being honest. We expect too much.
Also, we totally need to do a “Leave Brtiney ALONE!” video parody in Dirk’s defense. Volunteers?
Sep.17 at 1:18 pm
white hot eboy says:
Russ, if I could double capitilize the word I would. EVERY big game. A big game, to me, is on the grandest stage. Dirk has failed in every single one of the big games he was NEEDED to contribute in. Are you taking up the cause for all the chastized players in the lig this summer? Mother Teresa Bengston.
Sep.17 at 1:22 pm
Hisham says:
eboy, that WCF series that went seven games against San Antonio was a pretty great series for dirk. I think he needs a slight underdog role. i mean, he WAS the favorite to win against miami and golden state.. he even went up 2-0 against miami and then just got swept under the rug by the heat.. and then all the warriors had to do was bark at him and there he went and pissed himself again
Sep.17 at 1:23 pm
white hot eboy says:
Ryan, Russ seems to be the man for the job.
Sep.17 at 1:26 pm
white hot eboy says:
So he’s an underdog, Hisham? Why, because he’s big and white? If KG played for the same Mavericks team what would he be considered? If if he fails to bring a title to Boston, what is his legacy? That’s too easy a title to throw on a franchise player. There’s too many other dudes in the league that don’t have teams built around their skill sets that get the benefit of the doubt.
Sep.17 at 1:27 pm
white hot eboy says:
*that don’t get the benefit of the doubt.

str8-2-d-POINT says:
The press asked him “How can he(dirk) improve his chances of becoming mvp?” he responded with “becoming a better leader”
Sep.17 at 1:33 pm
Hisham says:
Wow all this typing for nothing, thank you holly!! As i was saying, eboy, that’s not what i meant.. i meant that he probably isn’t mentally strong enough to beat “lesser” teams.. Maybe the pressure to fail is too big for him to handle. I mean, would we all really be giving him this much sh*t if he bowed out of the WCF after a hard fought 7 game series against phoenix or SA? i don’t think so.. to sum it up, he’s chicken doodoo
Sep.17 at 1:38 pm
ic3 says:
can you teach leadership. you either are a leader or not, its a personality traite, which dirk - does not have. he also doesn’t have a backbone, looking blatantly scared against the warriors. his stat line, no matter how good, counts for nothing when he goes missing.
Sep.17 at 1:38 pm
white hot eboy says:
H, yeah, I lost a long comment too. I hate that sh*t. So what is Dirk then, someone else’s sideman? What if Jason Kidd was a Mav? Would that give Dirk freedom to be a great “modern” power forward who plays more like a big small forward? With the money he makes, and the resources that Cuban has, they can probably BUY him some sort of leadership training that can give him some sort of confidence so he’s not looked at as chicken doodoo.

i don’t mean to sound redundant, but to lose to a team that’s as good or better than you won’t get you a lot of criticism.. losing to a team that barely got into the playoffs will get you thrown in media hell.. so i just think that he got beat up by 7 year old when he was 12, and got laughed at really hard.. that memory stuck on him forever, and now he can’t handle that pressure
Sep.17 at 1:42 pm
white hot eboy says:
ic3, you can’t teach leadership, but you CAN teach the principles of being a leader, and then someone can create their own image with that learned knowledge. Maybe you aren’t a fiery, in your face, hate me or love type leader like MJ, but you can have the quiet, confident, steel resolve of a Tim Duncan, that’s worked out pretty well for his perceived laid back ass.

i think it would probably help him to become a tim duncan type leader if he to could play without worrying about ppg. maybe avery could look to howard, harris etc to help dirk with this rather than hotting dirk up like this.

peteb80 says:
So, how exactly did Dirk hurt your feelings eboy? You know there’s always some kind of love involved when you hate someone that passionately. Is it because he said they could have won against the Heat? Is it because he’s German? I feel sorry for him because he gets judged too harshly. It’s not like he goes out and tells everyone how great he is. As far as I know he has never acted like a spoiled superstar. In my opinion he’s one of the biggest overachievers in recent memory. Nobody knew him when he was drafted, nobody expected him to be the MVP one day, still people sh1t all over him like he is assh0le number one.
Sep.17 at 1:49 pm
Russ Bengtson says:
He had two bad playoff series. One and a half, really (the Miami series was going well enough until Dwyane turned into a whistle magnet). And EVERYONE knew that the Mavs were going to have problems with the Warriors. Riddle me this, though. If Dirk is such a baby and a terrible leader, what does that make Tracy “I’ve Never Been Out Of The First Round” McGrady? And funny you bring up KG, Eboy. I was trying to find his NBA Finals scoring average, but couldn’t. Little help?
Sep.17 at 1:49 pm
white hot eboy says:
ic3, agreed.
Sep.17 at 1:51 pm
Russ Bengtson says:
I also think Avery has a point, by the way.
Sep.17 at 1:55 pm
Hisham says:
come on now, russ.. replace dirk with KG on the 2006 mavs, then picture those playoffs.. no finals in your opinion? dirk has players around him
Sep.17 at 1:55 pm
white hot eboy says:
Am I speaking a different language today? Russ I used KG as an example of a failure in terms of titles, who was perceived as a determined leader on his team for over a decade. He never got the job done, similar to Dirk. pete, Dirk never hurt my feelings, I could give two shi*s about him or his career. But when people start giving me the “whoa is me” crap, someone has to say, “Shut the fu*k up, earn your money, use your ability, and lead your team”. If your the MVP, be that sh*t. Nash too. If you are the cream of the crop, show out when your MVP abilities are needed the most. Pretty simple, right?
Sep.17 at 1:56 pm
Hisham says:
KG only had that once, in 2004.. your point about T-mac seems pretty valif, though

Non-native speaker here, could you explain to me what “whoa is me” crap is?
Sep.17 at 2:02 pm
Russ Bengtson says:
So basically, just give cliched answers all the time and you’re OK? Look, I APPRECIATED Dirk saying (I’m paraphrasing here) “if we lose tonight, it’s over.” Because you know what? He was right! And he wasn’t just rehashing something he read in “The Art of War” once. And are you seriously gonna give Nash sh*t for not winning a title last season? Hm, guy comes back on the court with blood pouring out of a gash on his nose to try and win a game (which they probably WOULD have won if he could have gotten back out there faster), then loses two fellow starters because they’re not smart enough to stay seated while he’s getting blasted into the boards by Tie Domi–I mean Robert Horry. Right, it’s all Nash’s fault the Suns didn’t win.
Sep.17 at 2:03 pm
white hot eboy says:
pete, it should have read “woe is me”. Would that clarify it? Sorry.
Sep.17 at 2:05 pm
Hisham says:
russ, now apply a similar argument to KG’s case, for almost every year he’s played, and add the *no talent on his team* and blame him again for never having won anything in his life
Sep.17 at 2:07 pm
Hisham says:
NOT HIS FAULT
Sep.17 at 2:08 pm
white hot eboy says:
Russ, I don’t know, but those cliched lines seemed to work wonders for guys like Michael, Larry, Magic, Tim, Kobe and Shaq. There’s 20 titles in those hills. I’t’s not horrible to be a great player. But it’s even better to be legendary. But we’ve had this conversation before, and we’d be better served to speak about the actual threats to titles in the lig, than some wannabe title holdersc with really nice games.
Sep.17 at 2:09 pm
Dallas J says:
Avery speaks the truth. he’s not “calling anyone out”. You Mavs haters keep spinning everything as a negative. This is nothing that hasn’t been said before by Avery. Keep hatin Mutoni.
Sep.17 at 2:11 pm
Russ Bengtson says:
I think we’ve already established that you can’t win a championship with one All-Star, no matter how good he is. And I know the Mavs have some decent talent, but I still don’t think they have a true second star. (Josh Howard is an “All-Star.” They needed a second one because Dallas had such a good record.) And much as I love KG, I’m not convinced he’s an alpha dog, MJ kind of player. Because–limited talent or no–an MJ-like player doesn’t MISS THE PLAYOFFS three years running.
Sep.17 at 2:12 pm
Kevin Wilson says:
You know, Avery should have some experience with this. I remember how David Robinson got absolutely killed by Dream in the playoffs after that MVP regular season. The Robinson I saw after that was tougher, no doubt. Everybody who goes for a title gets knocked down at some point. Shaq got swept so often SLAM nicknamed him “Floor” once. Donald Sterling nearly traded for MJ because he thought he could convince Chicago he’d never get past Detroit. The Pistons lost on the “steal by Bird, underneath to D.J.” and then got beat by the Lakers the next year. The point is, all of those champions pushed back, and that’s when they started winning. It’s Dirk’s turn to follow suit.
Sep.17 at 2:12 pm
Reggie Evans says:
He just needs to get better at basketball, period. This “leadership” crap is so nebulous.
Sep.17 at 2:13 pm
Russ Bengtson says:
I’d rather hear someone tell the truth than rehash something they heard Michael Jordan say once.
Sep.17 at 2:14 pm
Paul says:
Russ the nose game was pretty impressive but the teammates excuse is just that, an excuse. Is it KGs fault that his teammates weren’t better? Is it Kobe’s fault that Kwame cant catch the ball? No, but they still get blamed for the losing. That’s what being a franchise player entails. Also, “blasted into the boards” is a bit too strong for me. Horry pushed him and he himself launched himself into the boards for theatrical effect. And it backfired which I found highly amusing. For a 2 time MVP Nash sure needs a lot of “they wouldve won if….”s from his fans. Not to say you’re a fan.
Sep.17 at 2:14 pm
Tarzan Cooper says:
russ, it is partly his fault for never learning and never wanting to play any defense, two time mvp my a$$.
Sep.17 at 2:15 pm
peteb80 says:
Is it feeling self-pity? I have a problem with the understanding of “mental toughness” that always comes up in this context. If you’re not rattled by the circumstances it automatically makes you a hard man, who deserves to be worshipped, while a guy getting nervous is a püssy who should be ridiculed. Well, I do get nervous when I have a big game and I don’t think it should make me less of a person. I understand it might make me less of a player, but I think people are going just too far in Dirk’s case.
Actually, eboy , it doesn’t
Sep.17 at 2:15 pm
white hot eboy says:
What exactly has MJ said, Russ? I’m curious on what example you’re using?

Jukai says:
Jesus, does WHE hate Dirk for some odd reason. Dirk has stepped up before and hit big shots in his life. He scored 50+ on Phoenix to beat them out of a defecit. He hit the game tying basket + foul against San Antonio in 2006, AFTER hitting the game tying three pointer against Memphis in the first round. Even against Golden State and Miami in losing games where he played horrible, he had times where he stepped up and had game winning shots. Yes, the entire Golden State thing sucked but now it’s like Dirk is suddenly the worst player ever. Yes, Dirk probably played the most horrid games of his life. And yeah, Dirk isn’t the best leader… he’s silent, easy to place blame, and can’t rally people in the locker room. But he’s not clutch? What the hell is this crap?
Sep.17 at 2:21 pm
Jukai says:
WHE hates white people
Sep.17 at 2:21 pm
Russ Bengtson says:
I don’t have any specific MJ quotes readily available. F*ck it, obviously Dirk sucks and everyone in here would handle the pressure of the NBA Finals better than he did. No way did he deserve the MVP, because he had nothing to do with his team winning 60-something games. And he just got that big contract and all the All-Star appearances because he’s white. Does that about cover everything?
Sep.17 at 2:22 pm
Reggie Evans says:
I also want to rant about “300″ which I saw on DVD this weekend. I know, it’s not the topic of the post. But I’m Reggie Evans. What was up with all the black people playing Persians? That was odd. Maybe someone can explain. Also, it was scary when the Persians unleashed Bill Walton on the Spartans.
Sep.17 at 2:23 pm
Jukai says:
I feel like ranting about the Golden state games and start pointing out that no one but Howard stepped out and how Dirk was double teamed before he got to the basket and triple teamed when he got close and how Don Nelson was coaching against Dirk, and Don Nelson was the person who pretty much molded Dirk into who he is, and how Avery Johnson changed the entire freaking lineup against Golden State and never changed it back and sort of was more to blame than Dirk but it’s all worthless, isn’t it>?
Sep.17 at 2:25 pm
Russ Bengtson says:
Dirk is just a more successful Brad Sellers.
Sep.17 at 2:26 pm
white hot eboy says:
pete, there’s a difference between being nervous and being scared. I think every player at some point get’s nervous not to let their team down, in any sport, but a professional is paid to not be scared, that’s what is supposed to seperate them from guys like you, me and Russ. We’re writing about them, while their racking up big money to be “good” with a game or a season on the line. I’ve won tournaments and money paying events playing basketball and I’m more angry at myself than my teammates when we lose, because I expect more from myself than my teamates. Yet at the end of the day I don’t get PAID to play NBA ball, these chosen couple few hundred do, so I can’t begin to feel sorry for someone who makes 100’s of millions of dollars playing a sport you and I play and get nothing in return for.
Sep.17 at 2:27 pm
Russ Bengtson says:
It’s just hard to succeed in the NBA playoffs when your seven-footers want to hang out on the perimeter and shoot jumpers, especially when you don’t have OTHER seven-footers ready to bang inside and score off offensive rebounds. That’s a problem that both Dirk AND KG share.
Sep.17 at 2:28 pm

I was going to go with Brad Lohaus, but Sellers works too.

jukai, you’re funny. And Russ is grumpy. Sometimes I wish I wasn’t white. Idiots. And why didn’t you hit out at me over my Nash comments, jukai, since I know you’re a Suns fan? Are you still writing that racially charged comment?
Sep.17 at 2:31 pm
Russ Bengtson says:
I faked throwing a punch at Dirk in the Mavs locker room once and he totally flinched. Right there I knew he’d never win a championship. (The preceding was a total lie.)
Sep.17 at 2:32 pm
riggs says:
@jukai everytime dirk has the chance to go in for an easy layup/dunk but stays outsides and shoots and misses (those add up to alot of points lost), and times where he does go in for a dunk, misses, and from then on is to afraid to do it again and stays outside. for a seven footer thats pretty much being scared imo.
Sep.17 at 2:33 pm
Jukai says:
I didn’t read your Nash comment WHE. I sort of read most of the dribble you wrote on top and skipped to the end cause I couldn’t take any more of it. Also, I was joking about how you hated white people. Don’t get your feathers riled up there, killer.
Sep.17 at 2:34 pm
Russ Bengtson says:
I’m not grumpy. At least not any more than usual. I just fail to see how a guy can LEAD (yes, lead) his team to the Finals one year, and the best record in the League the next, then get called out for being a gutless coward and a failure because they lost ONE playoff series (to the one team that everyone thought they’d have a tough time with).

Riggs, the man shot over 50%. And 40% from the three point line. And 90% from the free throw line. Not many people shoot that PERFECTLY. So stop giving Dirk crap for his shot selection.
Sep.17 at 2:35 pm
Russ Bengtson says:
No one had a problem with Dirk shooting threes when he was making All-Star and All-NBA teams, riggs.
Sep.17 at 2:37 pm

Russ, hypothetical. If your player shot over 40% from the three point line. would you let him shoot those three pointers or make him drive to the basket?
Sep.17 at 2:38 pm

Dirk isn’t taking the Mavs anywhere. I’ve watched him play at the Euro championships and he’s turned into a jump shooter. He has no ability whatsoever to drive to the hoop and create for himself and others. He’s overdependent on his jump shot.

Adrian says:
Jukai, lying will get you nowhere in life.
Sep.17 at 2:45 pm
Jukai says:
Izzo, I’m not saying Dirk couldn’t be a better leader. He could be a DAMN better leader. Yelling at his players when he isn’t doing a good job and looking uninterested in team huddles doesn’t make an amazing leader. But what is all this mental toughness and clutch crap being thrown around? Why are people picking apart the shot selection of, percentage wise, one of the most accurate all-around shooters in basketball right now? Gosh. WHE just hates white people.

white hot eboy says:
Bodie, I, for real, am loving you right now. The Shaq/Kobe fued is yesterday’s news. Today is “Hate the Big White Man” day!!!! Bodie is NOT on the list. Bodie is the king of California cool. At least today.
Sep.17 at 3:15 pm
white hot eboy says:
I’m glad I left work at lunchtime today. This is too great!
Sep.17 at 3:16 pm
Jukai says:
I’m glad this arguement ended well.
Sep.17 at 3:18 pm
Tarzan Cooper says:
riggs, i meant that as in spellcheck, since you are the grammar 5-0. izzo, that’s where my fam is at.
Sep.17 at 3:18 pm

Sep.17 at 3:20 pm
white hot eboy says:
“LEAVE KOBE ALONE, PLEASE” “YOU ARE ALL LUCKY HE EVEN PLAYS BASKETBALL FOR YOU” “HE HAS SO MUCH GOING ON IN HIS LIFE RIGHT NOW. JUST LEAVE HIM ALONE” I told you Bodie, I’m with you today, dog.
Sep.17 at 3:21 pm
H to the izzo says:
Tarzan:Tipp is an odd but nice place.
And who weighs more,Ryan or Kelly
Sep.17 at 3:22 pm
jbn74sb says:
I personally just like how Peteb80 puts his IQ in his username for us.
Sep.17 at 3:23 pm
jbn74sb says:
From the picture last week, Ryan does not qualify as white. Opaque, maybe.
Sep.17 at 3:27 pm
Tarzan Cooper says:
bodie is great today. izzo, what makes it odd?
Sep.17 at 3:27 pm
white hot eboy says:
Ryan is on the list. And for some reason I can’t hate Kelly. She’s like the little chubby chick you’d see at a bar with 4 of her other fat friends and she has the cutest face. The other friends resemble the Nebraska offensive line, so you run a little game to her drunk, plump as* and take her to that “special place”. Which back in the day, would have been the Motel 6. I was broke back then, sue me. Actually, don’t I’ll represent myself with no attorney fees on my side.
Sep.17 at 3:29 pm
Tarzan Cooper says:
bodie, i think you meant transparent, maybe translucent
Sep.17 at 3:29 pm
donk-a-thon says:
can anybody tell me why a team needs one leader? is this an us-phenomena? i’m asking you because i don’t see any advantage in loading all pressure on one single player, especially in clutch situations. one day a player might be able to handle this situation, another day he might fail, that’s human, don’t force it, whoever feels it that moment should take the shot/drive, whatever. watch the us-team vs. greece (i know that hurts) and tell me who the leader was, the greek had 3 different leaders every quarter. no offence, just wanna know what you think about it. by the way that leader-ideology might not be that popular in germany anymore, don’t blame dirk.
Sep.17 at 3:29 pm
white hot eboy says:
I truly do love Kelly, though. She has a great voice and I do think she’s cute even though she’s built like Bodie.
Sep.17 at 3:29 pm
Tarzan Cooper says:
eboy likes the chubby ones, just like clinton.
Sep.17 at 3:32 pm
H to the izzo says:
Tarzan, don’t get me wrong, there are some great people there but a lot are hostile. And wouldn’t be the most up to date place in the world, not many other races or cultures there
Sep.17 at 3:34 pm
jbn74sb says:
Tarzan, you’re probably right, but I do kind of like these defintions of opaque, especially 3 and 4:
1. not transparent or translucent; impenetrable to light; not allowing light to pass through.
2. not transmitting radiation, sound, heat, etc.
3. not shining or bright; dark; dull.
4. hard to understand; not clear or lucid; obscure:
5. dull, stupid, or unintelligent.
Sep.17 at 3:34 pm
Adrian says:
Which list do I fall on Eboy?
Sep.17 at 3:35 pm
jbn74sb says:
eboy - You can admire my build while I drain a 30 foot game winner in your eye, as I did on some other hapless joker on Saturday.
Sep.17 at 3:36 pm
white hot eboy says:
Adrian, are you colored like a marshmallow, a chocolate bar, or a ear of corn?
Sep.17 at 3:38 pm
white hot eboy says:
Bodie, they came through on a short bus, wearing helmets? That’s f*ed up. Bodie hate’s Special Olympians!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sep.17 at 3:39 pm
jbn74sb says:
I laughed out loud at that one, eboy, but aren’t you leaving some out?
Sep.17 at 3:40 pm
Tarzan Cooper says:
bodie, no. 5 is best. eboy, an ear of corn??? izzo, hostile, hmm, against whom? everybody? that does seem quite odd.
Sep.17 at 3:41 pm
Ryan Jones says:
This post went apesh*t!
Sep.17 at 3:41 pm
Tarzan Cooper says:
lmfao @eboy. bodie didnt mention the worst part, they were little girls

I’m basically an albino marshmallow. Make of that what you will.
Sep.17 at 3:43 pm
white hot eboy says:
LMAO at Tarzan’s apesh*t comment. Ryan, you were sorely missed.
Sep.17 at 3:43 pm
jbn74sb says:
Not this weekend, eboy, but I did win a charity wheelchair basketball tournament in Vegas a few years ago. Double elimination (no, not double penetration - calm down, peteb80), and we beat the one team in the Finals that had beaten us earlier. THe fact that nobody on my team was handicapped was much more of a detriment than an asset, as the handicapped guys were so much more adept at using and maneuvering the wheelchairs. About 200 people watched the Finals, and we won about $1000 worth of gift certificates and other goodies. And that sh+t was hard as hell - duct tape on your fingers, and they still got bloody.
Sep.17 at 3:45 pm
white hot eboy says:
Adrian, I like you. You not on any list. Marshmallows Rule!!!
Sep.17 at 3:45 pm
jbn74sb says:
Oh, and Dirk is still a b+tch until he proves otherwise.
Sep.17 at 3:46 pm
white hot eboy says:
Bodie, how did you not slip a D-Wade wheelchair reference in there. You are slipping, brother man.

Sep.17 at 3:47 pm
jbn74sb says:
I like Wade. His fat, overpaid, overrated malcontent teammate, not so much.
Sep.17 at 3:47 pm
Russ Bengtson says:
The reason why Team USA hasn’t won gold in a decade? Dirk Nowitzki. High gas prices? Dirk. The inability to withdraw from Iraq? Dirk. Bedbugs? Yep, Dirk.
Sep.17 at 3:48 pm
Russ Bengtson says:
Speaking about marshmallows (mmmm, marshmallows), Joey Crawford has been re-instated. SO STOP LAUGHING! I CAN SEE YOU OVER THERE! YOU WANNA FIGHT??!!
Sep.17 at 3:49 pm
Tarzan Cooper says:
izzo, wow. thanks for that interesting info.
Sep.17 at 3:50 pm
white hot eboy says:
Russ, you are about as idiotic as I have been this afternoon. Glad I’m not alone.
Sep.17 at 3:51 pm
jbn74sb says:
Good to see some self-awareness from eboy. Finally…
Sep.17 at 3:51 pm
Russ Bengtson says:
WHAT? YOU WANNA FIGHT? YOU’RE OUTTA HERE!!!!
Sep.17 at 3:51 pm
H to the izzo says:
Tarzan:sarcasm?
And Marshmallows rule!
Sep.17 at 3:52 pm
Tarzan Cooper says:
lmfao @ russ. i just got ejected. anyone remember when slam said cwebb is a bitch until he beats the lakers? i dont recall any racist $hit about that. dirk chokes BADLY in the finals then even worse in the first round and people, ahem russ, are saying its not his fault and we’re all racist.
Sep.17 at 3:52 pm
Russ Bengtson says:
And don’t sell yourself short judge, you’re a tremendous slouch.
Sep.17 at 3:53 pm
Russ Bengtson says:
When did I ever call anyone racist? Please point that out to me.
Sep.17 at 3:53 pm
Tarzan Cooper says:
izzo, i wasn’t being sarcastic, it is kinda hard to tell, that is some stuff i didn’t know and i wouldn’t find in a book. so thanks
Sep.17 at 3:53 pm
Russ Bengtson says:
Chukaz > Tarzan Cooper
Sep.17 at 3:55 pm
Tarzan Cooper says:
russ, you might not have called anyone racist, its kinda hard to keep track of who said what in a 170+ comment post. sorry for that part.
Sep.17 at 3:56 pm
white hot eboy says:
Tarzan, I didn’t want to bring up the C-Webb thing. God forbid, the “real” SLAM guys get called to the carpet. And Bodie, I’m always aware. I just like making people hate me. Like my idol, MJ and your cute little bi*ch, 24. I’m just smart enough to make people here think I’m a some sort of moron, while I’m busy counting money while I post here. It’s good to be white. YES, I’M BACKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was channelling Steven Tyler for those who don’t know American rock and roll.
Sep.17 at 3:59 pm
Tarzan Cooper says:
eboy, i had to go there because the kings were the team and c-webb should have won (finals)mvp
Sep.17 at 3:59 pm
Russ Bengtson says:
Didn’t the Kings lose to the Lakers in the playoffs roughly 74 times? Dirk lost in the Finals…once. He lost in the first round…once. I just think that rumors of his demise are greatly exaggerated (although, were I still writing NOYZ, I’m sure I would have gleefully skewered him in the issue immediately following the Warriors series). K? Stick to counting money, you’re probably better at that. P.S. I hate lawyers.
Sep.17 at 4:01 pm
H to the izzo says:
Everyone hates lawyers,in a good way
Sep.17 at 4:01 pm
jbn74sb says:
Don’t hate the player, Russ, hate the game.
Vineboy - One of the lesser known NBA rules is that you have to make the Finals to win Finals MVP.
Sep.17 at 4:02 pm
jbn74sb says:
Everyone hates lawyers. Until they need one.
Sep.17 at 4:05 pm
jbn74sb says:
Come on over to Russ’s Fisher King post, which is a cool read about a player with heart (unlike the subject of this post), to make fun of Vineboy’s Top 10 teams in the West.
Sep.17 at 4:05 pm
Adrian says:
Except they also hate it whenever they DO need one Bodie…
Sep.17 at 4:06 pm
Adrian says:
Did anyone catch that Sam Bowie piece by Marc Stein on the Follower? Made me feel kind of bad that he’s basically the butt of any draft day jokes.
Sep.17 at 4:06 pm
white hot eboy says:
Told you they’d take it personal, vineboy. I like that Bodie. I’m using creative license with that one.
Sep.17 at 4:08 pm
Tarzan Cooper says:
bodie, im saying he should have went to the finals, where he would have easily destroyed the nets and got mvp.
Sep.17 at 4:09 pm
jbn74sb says:
We’ll never know, swinger, we’ll never know.
Sep.17 at 4:10 pm
Russ Bengtson says:
How can you feel bad for Sam Bowie? Dude hobbled through an NBA career and has been happily retired since he was 35 years old. Tough life.
Sep.17 at 4:13 pm
Adrian says:
Yeah, it’d still kind of suck having everyone constantly point out what a failure/disappointment you were.
Sep.17 at 4:15 pm
Ryan Jones says:
Hey, I’m serious about the Leave Britney Alone! parody. Somebody needs to step up and do this. Sam, can we do a contest? You could give away prizes, like maybe a Mastodon bootleg or Alex Lifeson’s pick or something. Make it happen!
Sep.17 at 4:16 pm
Tarzan Cooper says:
bodie, we can’t KNOW. but we can be pretty sure they would have demolished the nets. btw, anyone remember how right before halftime of the 02 wcf game 4, samaki walker hit a halfcourt 3 that the refs counted but replays showed he was way late?
Sep.17 at 4:16 pm
jbn74sb says:
By the same token, Russ, how can you feel bad for Oden? He’s 19, and has a guaranteed contract that will pay him more than any of us will probably ever make in our lifetimes.

jbn74sb says:

Sep.17 at 4:23 pm
Tarzan Cooper says:
bodie, i was a cwebb-vlade-peja-bibby-bobby-jim jackson-hedo fan, not really a fan of the organization.
Sep.17 at 4:24 pm
white hot eboy says:
Bodie just proved HIS bitchness by using Shaq’s name for the Kings. I know your love is overflowing. Bodie Love’s Shaq 4ever.

Russ Bengtson says:
I only feel bad for Oden in the sense that he’s been waiting his whole life–all 57 years of it–for the start of his NBA career, and now it gets put off for another year.
Sep.17 at 4:28 pm
jbn74sb says:
Don’t forget eboy - I used to love Shaq. Until I watched him show up out of shape, publicly call out his coaches and teammates, not live up to his potential, and then top it off by blowing up my team.
Sep.17 at 4:29 pm
jbn74sb says:
What about Doug Christie, Tarzan?
Sep.17 at 4:30 pm
white hot eboy says:
Tarzan, any true basketball fan was a fan of that team. They moved the ball, played unselfishly and were a tight nit unit. But they couldn’t overcome that big purple and yellow mountain that wore #34. I seem to remember Mr. Jackie Christie giving a little mambit*h fits each series. The Lakers thank God for Shaq, Horry, D Fish and Phil Jackson each day. The King’s problem, their leader couldn’t get it done when they needed it most. The Lakers giant did.

someone did a leave Belichick alone video already. If people want to make the videos themselves and post links to their own youtube pages, that’s fine. But hosting videos on slamonline itself is tricky. Write it up Farmer Jones.

Sep.17 at 4:31 pm
Tarzan Cooper says:
bodie, how does kobe calling out his teammates, not living up to his playmaking potential(he figured out the scoring part), and then top it off by blowing up your team make you feel about him?

Bodie, when 24 leaves next year, you will be one bitter, bitter man.
Sep.17 at 4:33 pm
Russ Bengtson says:
If Kobe gets traded to Chicago, I’m becoming a Heat fan. I hear that’s the way to go.
Sep.17 at 4:35 pm
Tarzan Cooper says:
they couldnt overcome that big black and white mountain. kobe elbows mr. jackie christie in the mouth, when they’re standing, not when kobe is driving, and doug gets called for the foul. pollard and vlade fouling shaq’s elbows and shoulders with their face’s.
Sep.17 at 4:36 pm
Adrian says:
I remember when there was talk about Kobe going to the Grizzlies. For me, that would’ve been like Bawdy George and Relationship George combining….
Sep.17 at 4:41 pm
white hot eboy says:
Tarzan, I hate to disagree with you because it help’s Bodie’s cause, but Vlade and Pollard are two of the worst floppers in history. The Kings had their one shot when Peja missed a wide-open corner three that caught nothing but air and than blew it in overtime. I remember. Shaq get’s beat up more than any player in the league (and dishes it to)and after being basically tackled 15-20 times a game, that sh*t has to get old, quick. So while Bodie laments on good times gone by, we all will revel in the Mamba’s next idiotic move and his quick disappearance from the 2008 playoffs.
Sep.17 at 4:41 pm
Tarzan Cooper says:
most likely, 24 isnt going to sign an extention and opt out next year, the lakers will lose him, and gain nothing, bodie will have to be put on suicide watch.

Tarzan - Quick research topic for you. Which player led all 2 guards in assists last year? The year before? Free hint: Use the sort by position feature on yahoo nba stats if you need help.
Russ - eboy’s the traitor. With or without Kobe, I’m a Lakers fan.
eboy - Define fits. In game 6 of the 2002 WCF, Kobe had 31 points, on 10-20 shooting, 11-11 FTs, 11 rebounds, 5 assists, and 1 turnover. In game 7, he had 30 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists, and 0 turnovers.
Sep.17 at 4:45 pm
Tarzan Cooper says:
i know they flopped sometimes eboy, but sometimes they didnt, and shaq would just shoulder their face, and get the call. as much as the kings got shorted by the refs, you still have to be able to overcome adversity, even if it is more than what than what’s fair.
Sep.17 at 4:45 pm
jbn74sb says:
Kobe’s disappearance from the 2008 playoffs will never top the Heat’s never showing up to the 2007 playoffs.

white hot eboy says:
Last I checked, I’m not on the Heat or the Bulls payroll. And since this is a country were you are free to make choices, if I wanted to cheer for 27 of the leagues teams, what the f*ck difference does it make? I like 30 to 40 different players in the league because I like their games, can I not cheer for them when their team wins a game? To that, Mr. Bodie and Mr. Bengston I say suck a hot d*ck. And unless you two are employed by the Lakers or the Bulls I suggest broadening your scope. It’s nice to be free to choose. And I still have love for the Bulls. Just not that fat motherfu*ker that ruined the team because he thought he was the reason they won 6 rings. Get your minds right boys.
Sep.17 at 4:53 pm
jbn74sb says:
I thought Jordan ruined the Bulls by selfishly wandering off to play baseball. Or was he suspended by Stern for gambling?

I like other teams just fine, but as I’m not one of those alien-worshipping Mormons, I’m a one-team kind of guy when it comes to love. I respect and watch every team in the L, but I’ll ride or die with the Bulls until the end of time. P.S. If you’re gonna use my last name, do me the courtesy of spelling it properly. It’s right there in big orange letters.
Sep.17 at 4:55 pm
white hot eboy says:
Both. Be he came back and won three more rings in a row. If the Mambit*h does THAT, I’ll chop my own bal*s off. End of discussion. Ponder, Breathe, Exhale. Move on.

Sep.17 at 4:56 pm
Russ Bengtson says:
EVERYONE played a role in the Bulls breakup. Jordan burned himself out (twice), Pippen never signed a long-term contract that he wouldn’t b*tch about a year later, and Phil Jackson took all that Zen Master sh*t to heart. Lemme ask you something, Eboy–who was it that HIRED Phil Jackson in the first place? Who was it that traded the rights to Olden Polynice for the rights to Scottie Pippen? Who was it that (over MJ’s objections) traded Charles Oakley for Bill Cartwright? Instead of blaming Krause for keeping the Bulls from getting seven rings, how about giving him at least SOME of the credit for them getting six in the first place?
