Kirilenko: ‘Trade Me’

by Marcel Mutoni

To be honest, I’m surprised it took this long: After a couple of tumultuous years in Utah, 26-year old do-it-all forward Andrei Kirilenko has asked to be traded by the Jazz. And this being the digital age, he did so by posting his trade demand via a blog entry. Of course.

From the Salt Lake Tribune (who had one of their staffers translate the Russian text to English from this website):

“In a week, I need to join the Utah Jazz again, but quite frankly, I’m not really happy about that,” wrote Kirilenko. “The past season was bad for me and I was really disappointed.

“I’ve thought about it a lot and I came to a decision. I want to leave Utah Jazz. The European championships that just ended became sort of a test for me and now I think I know what I want to do.”

“It’s their choice. I have only one request: Let me, myself, go in the direction I want to go. I don’t want to be there and mechanically fulfill a contract.”

For anyone who followed the Utah Jazz last season, this shouldn’t come as a surprise. For God’s sake, in the Playoffs, the man broke down and cried because he wasn’t getting enough minutes. Doing so under the scornful eye of Jerry Sloan, only the most hard-ass of men, probably didn’t help matters much.

By making his unhappiness so public, AK-47 has now put the Jazz into a very tough spot. Every team in the League will now be trying to hoodwink them into a bad trade since they know how badly Kirilenko wants to leave. According to Kirilenko, though, this public outburst may be the Jazz’s own doing: He claims to not have heard back from anyone in the organization for the last week.

Andrei is owed $63 million in contract money over the next four years.

I wish the Heat could hoodwink the Jazz into taking Antoine and his tippytoe ass for AK47. His “me, myself and I” quote is fantastic. And I guess he is a non-sentinet being like The Robot if he doesn’t want to “mechanically fulfill” his contract.

RASH COMMENT ALERT! RASH COMMENT ALERT! RASH COMMENT ALERT!
Unless the Jazz get something decent out of this trade, they’ll be struggling next year. No D Fish and no AK? No getting past the playoff first round. Unless they meet Houston.

Sep.19 at 10:23 am

Payne-o says:
Besides, his contract and slightly tarnished reputation mean that he wont end up with a contender. What could the Jazz get back in return that they really need?

This is the Mormons’ fault, right?

Payne-o says:
Cuban would probably sign off on a deal for him. Then maybe Dirk and Andrei can cry on the bench together, if in fact, they are both whiney b*tch*s after all. Either that or Kirilenko’s D will rub off on Dirk, and they will both be vindicated.

AK 47is abeast, a constant quadruple-double threat. If only coaches would make him play where he truly belongs. AT THE PF SPOT. The guy is a killer in the paint and just looks confused when he’s on the wing. Send him to Cleveland or to Dallas and have Dirk play on th wing for some interesting matchups;

jj says:
The thing is, I don’t blame the Jazz for playing AK in the wing. It’s either that, or not playing at all. Because they’d rather have Boozer as the PF… and who wouldn’t? I’m sorry for AK… as a Jazz fan, I always hoped that he would fit into the new system, but it seems that there’s no way it’s happening. Now, my 2 cents are these: He won’t get traded. The Jazz’s owner isn’t stupid, and won’t trade him for chips and change. And since he won’t be getting more than that, AK is stuck in Utah. Maybe it’s time for Sloan to move on? I don’t know. But AK isn’t going anywhere…

Sep.19 at 10:46 am

Anthony Verna says:
Edmond, I’m as big of a 76ers fan as anyone, but do you think Billy King could ever make this trade?

Sep.19 at 10:54 am

Keith says:
jj - You’re entitled to your opinion…it’s just you’rw wrong. There is no way the Jazz should lose out on Sloan. The guy is a coaching machine. He may be fairly stuck in his ways but those ways are winning.

Nesterovic and Bargnani for AK-47.

Sep.19 at 11:03 am

Rasheedionics says:
Wow… They didn’t translate entire article from russian version. AK is taking some real shots at Jerry Sloan in there. Let me translate this one paragraph for you: “I would like to progress as a player. I’m really trying but he’s not letting me do it. I just don’t get any support from the coach or the club. I’m convinced that Jerry Sloan’s methods are having very negative impact on me. HIS MAIN METHOD OF MOTIVATION - CULTIVATING THE FEELING OF GUILT. Whether it’s our salary, our mistakes during the game, our off court activities - all being used as excuse to reprimand. I want to play basketball. I would love to enjoy playing basketball. I don’t want to be a robot or a little screw in Sloans system. That’s why I don’t see myself having a future with Utah Jazz.”

Sep.19 at 11:03 am

Keith says:
Jazz should trade AK47 for Isiah Thomas. That way the Knicks get a player waiting to break out and be a superstar and the Jazz get a complete clown of an inidivdual waiting to wreck their team. On second thoughts, the Jazz might not like that…

Sep.19 at 11:05 am

Keith says:
Rasheedionics: You didn’t translate the most vital part of all “Coach Sloan told me to stop crying and acting like a little baby because for the next 4 years, I’m going to get PAID”

didn’t read any of the comments above, but AK could come to Europe and get a 10 million $ per contract, in his sleep (7 mill proposed to Saras by Panathinaikos). it’s not 16, and he won’t be signing for more than 2 years, but he would be the absolute GOD wherever he might go.I don’t think th Jazz will consent, thoufg.

whereisbisondele? says:
G-Man, small problem with the trade the the Raptors: if AK’s already crying behind Boozer, he’ll be bawling (rather than balling) behind Bosh. Talk here is that Bargs will be playing the five in Toronto this year, Bosh the four, where he fits better.

Sep.19 at 2:37 pm

Ty says:
It would be sweet if the cavs could snatch him and bibby then it would definetly b a WRAP! for all the teams in the league.

Sep.19 at 2:38 pm

G-Man says:
Bisondele never should have gone yachting. AK had to play SF in Utah with Booz and Mehmet.
For the Raptors he can play the 4 (move bosh to 5). Voila, AK47 rebounds and plays inside. He doesn’t like the perimeter. However, Sloan wants a SF where Bargnani is a better fit (and is not a good rebounder). I think the cap numbers fit. Collangelo Jr. pick up the phone.

Sko says:
full disclosure..
I am not.. really a Lakers fan,
however I grew up in the Chi, and will probably always root for Phil,
plus Kobe has the Jordanspark and I really want to see what he could do with a team built around him.
Also, I think LO’s perserverance in the face of injury and personal tragedy should not be overlooked.
that said, LO for AK in a heartbeat, then go hard for Artest(underrated passer, willing student of those he respects) in free agency = roughly 95-98 Bulls don’t really care what it does for the Jazz, but for the sake of argument, gives them a second playmaker and a skilled 3-4 who prefers the 3 spot and doesn’t really know how not to defer

Sep.19 at 3:29 pm

Sko says:
hopefully nobody’s confused — AK as Rodman, Artest as that Notorious P.I.P,
Instantly one of the top one-on-one defensive teams in the L.
…also in a complete pipe dream, I would love to see Tyson go home to L.A. and get the chance to do him that Skiles never gave him. never happen though.

jj says:
Don’t get me wrong. I understand the Jazz wouldn’t be where they are if it wasn’t for Sloan. But… 20 years is a long tenure… I sometimes feel it’s time to move on. In 20 years, the game has changed a lot, and Sloan hasn’t. At some point the same old system stops working. Oh, and somewhere in Louisiana Paul Millsap is grinning… he’s just secured a starting spot. What a steal, that guy…

truthismygame says:
Bargniani(sp?), barring injury, will develop into a very good NBA player.. i like his complement of offensive skills + clutch shooting.. on D, he needs to put on a big of muscle and become more disciplined, but he’s already shown flashes of toughness.. i wouldn’t trade him for AK.

The Jazz owe him 63 mill? He’s good but he ain’t that good, at least not last season. His offensive game comes and goes, but he does play D, which is rare in the league today. I’m still wondering what caused his emotional breakdown during the playoffs last year. I think the death of Boris Yeltsin may have had something to do with it.

salaries have to match, and since I am a lakers fan i too want Kirilenko for Odom. Odom has had a while now and still we have not passed the first round. Walton just got a new contract so the 3 spot is taken (a sf who plays the triangle well by the way) now we juss put AK47 as PF and rotate between Walton. AK, Turiaf Cook and Brown (brown only has one year left on his contract!!!!!) and we got ourselves a team!

Sep.19 at 10:51 pm

Holiday says:
Face it AK isn’t going to the Lakers, besides it’s so much better watching him occasionally swat Kobe with athourity! But seriously, with talks of a bigger guy like Marion available the Jazz can’t settle for a couple mediocre players from LA!

Sep.20 at 2:02 am

Danny says:
I agree with Andrew. Odom for Kirilenko could work for both teams though the Jazz might insist the Lakers include a draft pick. Odom is also attractive ‘cos he has only two years on his contract to K’s four. Will make it easier to extend Deron to the 10+ mill a year he is going to expect then.
Don’t forget Millsap sitting in the wings as a solid backup at the 3 & 4.

Anoher Hello from Russia! AK47 had not been used properly by Sloan. he’s old-time tactics is based on PG-big guy interaction. Previously it was Stockton-Mailman, now it is Williams-Boozer/Okur Andrei has proved his top level on latest Euro Basket where he ‘ve been awarded as an MVP. He is not some kind of showdown, but his abilities are strong at both sides of the court. Sloan isolated AK47 from offensive play, the ball was not given 2 him Ideal teams for Drey - Suns and Spurs

I would still really like to see AK and LO to play together in LA. Both can play forward position and very versatile.
LO requires the ball to operate while AK did not. So, the ball-sharing issues are unlikely to come up.

thats not right.. i mean what if every player who wants to get traded makes their voices heard like kirilenko… i mean he should stop whinning and just play with it.. sure he can block a ton of shots but he cant shoot the ball even if mother russias ass depended on it (sorry for the racist comment)… well i just think that just because your not happy with your team it doesnt min that you cant just bi*ch yourself out of this situation… stop whinning and start practicing how to shoot the ball stupid… ak47 is a great player but i just hate quitters… i guess that also makes iverson a bi*ch in my book coz he also demanded to get traded …
