Is Bill Walton Good at His Job?

While most of us consider Bill Walton to be delightfully awful at what he does for a living, Forbes Magazine doesn’t seem to be in agreement. In fact, they ranked the ebullient redhead among the ten best pundits in America. Of course, this is the same publication that named Kevin McHale among the best GM’s in all of sports a few months ago, so take this for what it’s worth.

bill should have taught those german kids how to smoke. im sure he would have also provided acid and shrooms. anytime bill walton, or phil jackson, talks about dress codes or thuggery or whatever, i immediately wish i could smack the $hit out of them. they were some of the old school nutjobs who paved the way for the jr riders and ron artests

I’m going to assume that the people from Forbes are “casual” NBA fans. Where’s SLAM’s list of the top ten pundits and play-by-play announcers? Editor! I cast my vote for play-by-play for Spiro Dedes. Right now he does radio for the Lakers, but I want him to be the TV guy, too!

The only way Walton is good at his job is if he works for the people that make ‘mute’ buttons.

Bill Maher next to Bill O’Reilly? This list makes about as much sense as either of those guys.

I guess there is some sense in this. I did turn him on to watch a basketball game and came out learning more about Canada than I ever wanted to

Dick Enburg - “A lot of people think Michigan is just Detroit, but when you get up north there’s some really beautiful land.” Bill Walton - “What, is it just, like, a desert up there?”

Jonte says:
Why you guys hatin’, I mean sure he doesn’t make any sense, but he is a color commentator so shouldn’t he be a litte fun, I mean Steve Kerr just puts me to sleep.

I personally love Walton. All the other announcers are too bland. Yes, he makes ridiculous claims (”Cutino Mobley is the greatest in-bounds passer in the history of the Clippers franchise”), but you can’t deny that he has a great passion for the game. I hope that when I am that old I can be half as cool as Bill Walton. Only the cynics and the depressed hate Bill Walton.

Sep.25 at 10:35 pm

LordGef says:
On a completely unrelated note, how is Greta Van Susteren on that list? All she does is report on missing blonde girls and “trend stories” of the day that we look back on years later and wonder “how was that news?” I am still recovering from the Teri Schiavo non-issue.

We’ll always remember him though, Bill Walton, years from now. Are you really going to remember Steve Kerr as a commentator? Lang seemed to grow fond of him during the tourney of the Americas. Anyone who can give that tour of Puerto Rico, whether it is stock knowledge or research, loves his job and works hard at it. Bonus points from me. Anyway Forbes magazine may have screwwed up that time, but they have more money than slam. More money more fame more cred overall, maybe even among players.

Walton is the worst. Fact. I mean fact.
Everything he says is a complete overexaggeration. I have a new nickname for him it’s “Captain Ultimatum” nothing is ok or fair or average. everything is “the most dominating, devastating, unbelievable, incredulous, inflammatory, etc etc etc. the 70s weren’t so good to mr walton

bill walton is the most appreciative person of the game we have today. We should be more appreciative of having him do his job.

What are you talking about the 70’s weren’t good to Bill Walton? He’s probably the happiest man on the planet. He’s in the ranks with Gary Busey, Mike Tyson and Stephon Marbury…to quote Ari Gold “you’re gonna spin right off this planet”

and I say Slam should do a list of the worst broadcasters too… Bill might not even top the list! The Raptors’ Leo Rautins is almost as bad a commentator as he is a Canada national team coach

Sep.26 at 6:44 pm

mdshuai says:
I thought Steve Kerr was an awesome commentator; he always knew more about the game than his partner, had won multiple rings on championship teams - so he had a ton of credibility - and I thought the guy had a hilarious kind of dry humor.

Sean says:
I hate Bill Walton more than any commentator in sport. He is stupid, worthless, and the mere sound of his elephantitis voice makes me want to slit my wrists. I have to either mute a game he is calling to watch it, or more likely I simply change the channel. ESPN must be full of poor business executives to allow him a place in commentating. I have heard of the amounts of complaints they get from people like me who can’t stand him
