Tim Donaghy: Straight Cash, Homey

by Marcel Mutoni

Let’s see: Don-a-gie publicly shamed the NBA; made David Stern appear helpless in front of the entire world (something I’m still not entirely sure actually happened); and gave the League its biggest black eye ever. So, what does the NBA do to repay him? They’re gonna throw some pension money his way. Of course they are:

The league, however, will be supporting Donaghy financially. Indications are that Donaghy, who spent 13 years in the NBA, will receive a severance package as well as his pension. A source said the pension plan provides for up to $78,000 annually for life, based on seniority.

[… ]

The plan is guaranteed for 10 years, meaning should Donaghy die within the 10 years since he began drawing the pension that his heirs would receive the money.

In all likelihood, he’s still going to jail (which I hear is an unpleasant experience), but at least his bankbook will be looking good. So, he’s got that going for him. Which is nice.

$75K a year is pocket change to the NBA but good cheddar to a disgraced ref who won’t see a penny of that unless he keeps his mouth shut.

Here me out here. If he can get his wife to save that money and say in 3 years take the ~$200,000 and put it on the Knicks to win the championship. They’ll easily be 200:1 payoffs. By then a rabid fan would have killed Isaiah and maybe, just maybe they’d have some sort of team built. He could come out of prison a king.

Also, if you’re the wife… do you pray the mob catches up to him in the clink? 75 grand straight to the purse every year for 10 ain’t bad.

This perfectly illustrates the magic of unions - this is why America can’t compete on a global landscape.

he is being rewarded for doing wrong, it’s kind of like in grand theft auto where you get points for killing people, or destroying things, it’s not right

Stern is in the shizzle. He HAS to deal with this in a way that makes a statement. He is the daddy of the NBA, and as such, needs to punish Donaghy appropriately. Make the other refs see what the consequences will be. Hell, make the rest of us see what happens to people who make such mistakes. We’d be fired if it was our jobs.

Man, if he gets a 10-year sentence he can invest the money in some sure thing stock or high-interest fund, hit the weights, hope to get some time knocked off his sentence, come out in about 3 years ripped and rich. I wish I was in such a lucky situation… this could be the best thing that ever happened to him. although the showers might haunt him for the rest of his life, but hey, no pain, no gain right? hahaha…

Tim’s profile is not accurate. His profile states that he officiated high school games for five years before entering the CBA where he officiated for seven years. To join a basketball chapter you have to be 18 years old. It usually takes several years before an official would be assigned a varsity game. Even on the fast track he wouldn’t have received a varsity game until the age of 21. Do the math. 21 + 5 + 7 + 13 in the NBA = 46 years old. Tim is 40. Seems like Tim went from Villanova University straight to the CBA with very little experience.
