The (Updated) SLAM Fresh 10 — 2010

Heading into the second year of high school, these youngsters are no longer rookies. Which newfound vets cracked the updated SLAM Fresh 10 for 2010?

by Aggrey Sam

Look, these are youngsters–kids entering the 10th grade. It’s cool to have your opinion, but obviously a lot can change over the next three years. Who will end up on top in 2010? My guess is as good as yours. But as of right now, this who I think is at the head of the class. Take it easy on them, people.

The SLAM Fresh 10 - 2010

Rank Name Height Pos Last School Why?
1 Brandon Knight 2010/6-3 PG/SG 1 Pine Crest (FL) A polished scorer and willing distributor, Knight's game is so mature it's easy to forget he's only played one season of high school ball.
2 Jeremy Tyler 2010/6-10 C 2 San Diego (CA) With his combination of tremendous size and skills, Tyler is a man among boys.
3 Jereme Richmond 2010/6-6 SF 3 Waukegan (IL) He's still four years away from honoring his commitment to Illinois, but the potential of this athletic, sweet-shooting wing might be enough to make Bruce Weber forget about the Eric Gordon fiasco.
4 Tristan Thompson 2010/6-8 PF/SF 4 St. Benedict's (NJ) With his uncanny inside-outside game, expect the native Canadian to blow up in Jersey
5 Joe Jackson 2010/6-0 PG/SG NR White Station (TN) A relentless scorer with solid playmaking ability, Jackson's remarkable athleticism offsets his slight frame.
6 DeShaun Thomas 2010/6-7 SF/PF 6 Bishop Luers (IN) Capable of dominating defensively and on the boards, the Ohio State commit can also handle the rock and shoot from the perimeter.
7 Kendall Marshall 2010/6-2 PG 5 Bishop O'Connell (VA) Some college point guards don't run the show as well as the recent UNC commit, who handles the rock, dimes and shoots it like a seasoned vet.
8 Jayvaughn Pinkston 2010/6-6 PF/SF 7 Bishop Loughlin (NY) Pinkston's Barkleyesque frame and game belies his finesse skillset, complete with that NYC playground handle and passing flair.
9 Ralston Turner 2010/6-5 SF/SG NR Muscle Shoals (AL) This explosive wing with hops can do damage on the inside with his power and hops and on the outside with his sweet shooting stroke.
10 Dion Waiters 2010/6-2 SG/PG NR South Kent (CT) He hasn't played a high school game yet, but the Philly native and very early Syracuse commit--he's the cousin of 'Cuse incoming freshman Scoop Jardine--is a gifted athlete and scorer.

Why are you sleeping on 6′8″, 220 PF Jared Sullinger from Columbus (OH) Northland HS? He is a beast that has already verballed to Ohio St. Jared is ranked in the Top Ten on most other lists and has gotten the better of a number of players on your list.

a. sam says:
Mookie: I’m not sleeping on JJ’s little brother. I definitely considered him, but I’d like to see if he grows before putting him in the top 10. I’ve seen too many young posts not get any bigger and others catch up to them. If I ranked 25 players in the class, Jared would easily make it.

You need to check out caainsider.com Daryl Trayham should still be on you list. He destroyed the boy John Wall in a head to head match up last weekend. Pound for pound he is the best 2010 guard in the country!

T.J. says:
‘10 OH SG Cameron Wright Shooting guard
Cleveland (OH) Benedictine
Ht: 6-foot-5
Wt: 195 lbs
Class: 2010 (High School) 6′5 sophomore wing G/F that started varsity as a freshman from Cleveland benedictine. Already projected as candidate for Mr. Basketball. He was already one of the top freshman in the state and in the country, but do to his Phenomenal performance this summer during team play and AAU will be ranked a lot higher Statewide and nationally. Very effective three point and pull up shooter. deadly on the fast break with or without the ball. Breaks down defenses and penetrates with ease. cerebral player with great court vision. Does not need the ball or score to impact a game. Capable of obtaining a triple double on any given night. very unselfish but can score from anywhere. superb defensive player. absolutely tenacious on defense. Led AAU team in points, steals, assists, rebounds, blocks, forced turnovers, and charges. LED HIGH SCHOOL TEAM in pts, stls, assts, 2nd in blocks, 3rd in rbds. He IS THE REAL DEAL. if you don’t believe me then those of you that know jarred sullinger ask him because they are very close friends. And I do believe OHIO STATE IS RECRUITING. I’m not Cameron’s parent or anything I just have to praise a young man that is focused and determined to be the best ever. most impressive about Cameron wright is that so far at Benedictine is the fact that he has pressed strongly toward academic excellence. How many kids on this list have a 3.9 GPA. now thats a 15yr old you can b proud of.

RE, As I commented on the 2008 post, I like Traynham’s game a lot and even though he has a big heart, he’s a tiny kid. That’s not a knock against him, but I’ve seen bigger kids do a lot of the same things or do them better (like Kendall Marshall, who might not be as explosive, but runs the show better, against older comp and can shoot it much better) or kids around the same size bring other things to the table (like Joe Jackson, who isn’t much bigger, but doesn’t need the ball in his hands to get it done, is a better shooter and is a crazy athlete for his size) than he does. As for his matchup against Wall, did you claim Nick Anderson was better than Mike because of one game?
T.J., do you coach Cameron? I’ve actually heard of him (I have a good Midwest connect) and I do my research, but in your scouting report, it seems like the kid has no holes in his game. I’m guessing Benedictine plays in the same league as St. Edward (where Delvon Roe goes) and the kid I hear Cleveland buzzing about the most in the 2010 is Pe’Shon Howard. Is Cameron better than Pe’Shon? The thing most impressive about what you wrote about Cam was his GPA. Tell him to keep that up, keep working on his game and he’ll be fine, ranked by me or not.

CCB says:
All lists can be disputed because there is not a full proof method of getting every kid in one place at the same time. But I’m dropping my suggestions for this list and I’ll back it up with video:
Rashad Jenkins 6-5
http://www.centercourtbasketball.com/2010_files/Page1311.htm Jeverik Nelson 6-7 (6-8)
http://www.centercourtbasketball.com/2010_files/Page1145.htm Demarcus Lewis 6-4
http://www.centercourtbasketball.com/2010_files/Page567.htm Montell Walters 6-5
http://www.centercourtbasketball.com/2010_files/Page373.htm Aaron Cooper
http://www.centercourtbasketball.com/2010_files/Page564.htm Marshun McGee
http://www.centercourtbasketball.com/2010_files/Page1560.htm At least two of these kids will be high major guys. If SLAM is all about getting the scoop on the future then here it is.

No, I don’t coach Cam we’re just friends. cam isn’t ranked on any site but yet OSU,UCLA,Tenn, DUKE, Clemson, Mich State, Michigan, VTech, Wisconsin, Maryland, Indiana, Penn State, PITT W. Carolina…etc, etc, have all been coming to watch him this week at Benedictine and throughout this month. Is he better than Pe’shon? I’ll say this Peshon had the benefit of sitting and soaking up information and playing for a national powerhouse., while Cameron shouldered the responsibility of a rag tag Bengals team and leading them to the Elite 8. If pe’shon were thrown to the wolves like Cameron was then I believe he would have reponded the same way as Cameron by takeing over as a freshman STARTING varsity. I would like to keep you posted on his progress PERSONALLY. how would I go about doing that?

Oh they forgot Taylor Dyson. He’s an athletic dude from Australia. He is 6 foot 2 and can jump like crazy. If he bulked up a bit then he would be unstoppable. He is a Shooting Guard but he can really play any possition. A truely amazing swingman. You coaches better get to him before someone else does because it would be a big loss if you didnt get him. Taylor’s myspace is above.

CCB, I checked out your site and while they might be high-major kids in the long run, I can’t say any of the players you have listed are top 10 in the class (at least right now) based on the video. TJ, keep me updated on Cam’s progress by continuing to comment. I read them all, even if I don’t get back to people right away. Domo, I’ve heard good things about big Evan. Thanks for filling me in on kids from your home state. I hear a lot more about prospects from Chicago, Detroit and other places in the Midwest. perrks, I think putting Dion in the top five would be a stretch since he hasn’t played an official high school game yet, but he is nice. Va baller, are you talking about Joshua Hairston? t-bar, I’m a big Tristan Thompson fan. 6-8 with consistent range out to about 18 feet, handles well for his size, good court awareness, extremely long, passes well and a good finisher, just needs to get stronger. nique, I heard about Kendall and will update that shortly. hoopmagic, thanks for the verification. John Hamilton, unfortunately I haven’t been to Australia to see the talent down under. Kyle, what school does Juwan Jr. go to?

Darrell says:
Yo Slam, I dont know if you heard about him or not but there is a sophmore in Louisville, KY by the name of Aaron Cosby. He goes to Manual High School and hes a beast on the football field and basketball court check him out. Manual High School also has two other good players in the class of ‘10 by the names of Bruce Bell and TaJuan Bell.

Sep.26 at 5:51 pm

a. sam says:
I’ve heard the name. Doesn’t Tony Kimbro, the son of the ex-Louisville star of the same name, go to Manual, too? I hear the younger Kimbro is one of the best in the nation for the class of 2011.

CCB says:
Thanks for the response a.sam. But I am from Memphis and I have seen Joe Jackson play and while I agree he is a true talent, explosive for his size, there is no way that you can watch that video of Rashad Perkins and tell me that Joe is a better prospect. Rashad is 15 years old, with a 40 plus inch vertical leap and the body of collegiate freshman, Jeverik Nelson is 6-7 maybe 6-8 with serious guard skills… But this is why we create lists, to open the debate and generate pub for the players that we have seen. I also was a head coach in San Diego and I have a kid who just signed with Long Beach State who played for me (This is to say I have a D-1 guy out of my high school program and many more who I have had in camps, just to add validity to what I’m saying) But I have seen as many teams as anyone in the southeast and I say without any reservation that if Rashad and Jeverik were in Memphis, Daygo, or any ‘major’ market they would definitely rank in the top twenty for players in their class. I know colleges love a good guard but by the time these guys are seniors, if they continue to develop, they should both be very highly regarded. Either way I think any list is valid when the ranker has seen a lot of hoops, and everyone will have their arguing points, but by the time I’m done in Arkansas next month with my last camp prior to the high school season, I will be able to add at least 7-10 more high major c/o 2010 players to the site. Thanks for the forum though and I will definitely be peeping the articles.

a. sam says:
CCB, I checked out Rashad and Jeverik on your site. Rashad is definitely athletic, but I hope he continues to work on his perimeter skills, even if he grows. Jeverik is very skilled for his age and size and you’re right about him needing to play more on the inside. However, I don’t think your point about small-town talent not getting love is very valid. There are plenty of big-city kids who don’t get the publicity that a small-town kid like Ralston Turner (who’s from a place I’ve never heard of, Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and is in my top 10), recieves. The kids you’re promoting won’t get the love a kid like Joe Jackson gets until they do their thing on a national stage, against top comp. I truly appreciate grassroots events like the ones you have, but if you really think your kids are that good, invite kids like Joe to hoop against them. Better yet, put together a squad of your underrated prospects and put them in one of the top AAU tourneys in their region. If and when they kill, they’ll get plenty of publicity. If not, get back at me after their high school seasons with their numbers, what they did against good comp and most importantly, how their teams fared. quis, I’m a big JT fan and he was in my first top 10 for 2010. Nice kid with the game to match. I didn’t take him out of the rankings for anything he did wrong, but I only saw him at one event and even though my North Carolina source told me about his great freshman season, I simply saw other kids in his class who impressed me more. Knowing how competitive he is, I wouldn’t be surprised if he makes me look silly very soon. Domo, Milwaukee is definitely not overlooked by me, despite what you might think about me not putting Korie Lucious in my top 50. I just never had a chance to really check out the high school scene in your city and state.

Oct.3 at 9:35 am

CCB says:
Good point, but I am not really interested in coaching or establishing an AAU team, I run that website by myself (video editing, evals, stories and publsihing the site) that is time consuming enough along with running the camps. And I understand that the circuit is the place to build a rep, but unfortunately a lot of these kids can’t afford it or they have to work to help with family expenses whihc takes away a lot of travel options. Rashad’s numbers will be affected by him playing alongside Latavious Williams 6-8 top 150 (who I was the first to get into a camp last year and somewhat break to the nation and after playing in the CCB camp he moved on to the Birmingham Raptors which actually led to his national ranking, this is what the CCB camp will do for these other guys hopefully) and Chris Brand 6-9 c/o 09 (top 100). So I wouldn’t be surprised if his numbers are down. Jeverik should kill. His teammate who was the leading scorer last year, James White, is headed to LA City this season so the team is officially in the hands of a soph.
As a point of reference I have worked extremely hard to get the “elite” athletes into my camps but most of these kids have handlers, and these ‘handlers’ very often steer the kids to events where they can profit or maintain control. This is why I have taken to spending a lot of time discovering guys like these student athletes. Just to maintain some validity, last year the CCB camp featured Malcolm White (Ole Miss) Horace MCGLoster (Houston) and Claude Britten (UTEP) along with a host of other under the radar type players who accepted schollies to various schools. Very often I think you have s situation where a lot of hoopers shine on a national level and then get served at the collegiate level because they have basically always been placed in comfortable situations note Maynor vs Paulus last year. But as it stands I will continue to dig and excavate prospects and use your forum to provide added recognition for them. Very soon I think my camp will become the home of the undiscovered elite athlete and then the handlers won’t be able to avoid what I’m doing. Finally, those guys I mentioned last year that went D-1 all played at Genesis 1. Oddly enough they were beat in the camp by Latavious Williams team, and it was still difficult to get the seniors on that team into college. This is to say that often a kid can shine on the national level but some nationsl sites still focus on the names that will generate hits and traffic. Most national sites generally will not ‘pub’ up a player until as you said they establish themselves on the big stage and you are right a lot of smsll town guys are starting to get love, but sometimes a team can win a big championship and not get a single word written about them. I will definitely stay in touch and I will hit you with more regional guys after the Arkansas camp. I guess you can see what I’m doing: By the time next summer rolls around the CCB camp will gain more notoriety and when I bring in all of these prospects (from the various states) in July they won’t need a ‘Joe Jackson’ to be there to validate their skill they will have each other to compete against. Keep up the responses and people are going to give you all of the info you need to make your high school section the realest.

CCB, sorry I’m just getting back to you. I feel where you’re coming from. I work with kids in Philly (a big city) who don’t get a lot of recognition and I definitely understand how hard it is to get an under-the-radar player into school. Keep doing what you’re doing and eventually, you’ll get those kids the shine they deserve. If I’m ever in your neck of the woods (might be sooner than you think), I’ll hit you up about some of these prospects you have. Obviously, a talented kid who can play will get more publicity, but personally, I love discovering the sleepers.

a. sam can you please take a look at Tyler Thornton he is already being talked about as the best guard in Gonzaga College High School (DC) history. What do you think about this player (I have played him and he is the truth he the best a I have ever played against)? He has excellent defense as well as a developing knack for scoring. In the rock summer league as well as aau ball for DC Assualt Tyler has shown great promise. Please email me if you can see the email information.

Thanks for the response A. Sam, I finally realize where I saw you. I was peeping the Chris Paul cover of Slam from last year and you were dunking on Diana Tuarasi (sp). I read where it said you were working with the kids in Philly. Keep up with what you are doing on your end. I love to see when guys who played ball discuss kids. I’m really tired of seeing cats who never picked up a rock rank and talk about the game like they live and bleed hoops. It will be good to have you down this way. I am running one last camp before the high school season kicks off in the tri state area (Ark, Tenn and Miss) It is going to be great. I’ll have a photographer there snapping pics and if you like I’ll hit you with the report. I will have the vids and pics up by the following Monday.
