gerard, if i had a nba team loaded with versatile scorers like kobe and melo, i´d pick role players to complement them. so, yes, i´d rather have collison or a guy like raja bell. every time the USA lost to international competition the critics called for role players and pure shooters. james is an exciting nba player, but he lacks the skills for international competition. plus, he´s way too in consistent. joel, do you recall james disappearing act in the finals?

I agree with Seppo. LBJ’s “game” — and I use that word very loosely — is not suited to international basketball. LBJ is an inconsistent jumper, a mediocre free-throw shooter, and “takes the air out of the ball” whenever he is on the floor. Despite his world-class athleticism, he can’t defend elite international 1s and 2s and seems to have no concept of how to play team defense. Coupled with LBJ’s well-documented attitude problem, he seems more likely to hurt Team USA then to help it. While Durant isn’t exactly a defensive stalwart, he is a great spot up shooter and doesn’t need the ball in his hands to be effective on the offensive end. Collison can (and will) guard the more mobile and skilled international big-men and defenses will be forced to respect his jump shot. Not to mention that Collison, like Durant, will be a team player. If Team USA wanted to build a team to win in international competition, it would have taken Durant or Collison, not LBJ. But, selecting LBJ will appease Nike and help sell Team USA merchandise. That’s something.
