Even ESPN Employees Hate Who’s Now

We love that ESPN has an ombudsman who appears to have common sense. The only thing we don’t love is that thus far, in two years of ombudsman columns, I don’t ESPN has taken a single suggestion to heart.

The problem is that ESPN doesn’t have a viable competition. Where else on TV you can get 24/7 sports coverage? Exactly. No competition = they can do whatever they want.

The problem is that we’re a numbskull society that can’t think of anything better to do than watch sports 24/7.

Someday, we won’t care about this when we are watching the SLAMTV channel - no hockey highlights, no tennis, no Ahmad Rashad, just the NBA without David Stern’s stamp of approval.

I’ve never seen who’s now, but im sure its better that some of the other EPSN programming (Bass fishing, wnba, equestrian). Just be glad that you dont live in Canada and have to put up with curling on tv. Being a color analyst of curling matches may be the worst job in recorded history.

The goal of 24/7 sports coverage is not to hape people actually watch it for entire 24 hours straight. Its goal to make sports news available to anyone at any time of day. So no matter what type of schedule you have, when you get home and turn to ESPN you’ll get today’s sports news… If there was another network doing a similar format across the street, you would see the quality of programming increase dramatically.

SA, the one up north trip I’ve made during my SLAM tenure was for a Vince Carter feature back in like ‘01, and I was in Toronto in February, which was a bad idea in and of itself. But yeah, I literally thought it was a practical joke when I found youth hockey games and f*cking curling on TV but couldn’t find a single NBA game. Getting a room at the Four Seasons for like $89 a night was pretty dope, though.

In looking for other networks, ‘Sheed, I suggest you try “the internets.” It’s on channel 8, I think.

Actually, ESPN does have competition — regional sports networks, which is what I watch instead of wearing out my Stu-to-English dictionary. But considering how poor a job ESPN does on just reporting the news, you would think that one national sports network would put together a 30 or 60 minute show every night and morning and go head to head against Sportscenter. If done right, that network could prevail and use that as a springboard to bigger things.

the worst part about the whose now segment is that i dont think retarded hollywood celebs should be deciding whose a better athlete

Whose now was done wrong anyway. Tiger Woods was voted the winner, but how is he more now than Michael Vick or Barry Bonds, Ted Donaghy comes in 3rd in my book as well.

to me espn news should solve the credibility issue…but that who’s now flick really bugged me out. espn sportscenter (i don’t know if its just me realizing this) has always been more entertainment than news worthy. I’ve always switched over to espn news to really see whats going on.

TSN, holdin’ it down with “youth hockey games”, and curling. I’m Canadian and I have no idea why curling commands such respect from viewers and networks alike. However, for me it is just damn funny at this point.

Common was on Who’s Now. He said LeBron was more Now than Tiger Woods. I don’t know what any of this means.
