Russ Bengtson says:
“He was the leading scorer, and he was the second leading scorer in the NBA this past season, because he’s got perhaps the most complete offensive game in the world.” Scary, but quite possibly the truth.

That was a nice article. But I dont know about the comparison of Melo and Kobe’s low post games. While Melo being bigger and stronger allows him to overpower players that Kobe cant, I think Kobes footwork is still better at this point and that fadeaway is still the most unstoppable post move in the game. Until someone brings back the skyhook…

Carmelo is the key to a gold medal. His diversity and strength are huge in the international game. Regardless of what 24 (10) does. Lebron, Melo and Wade will be murder in ‘08.

Shut up Hisham. With Wade, Kobe, Melo, Lebron, Oden, CP3, Kidd and D-Howard, the team is loaded with fantastic players, winners, team players and some of the most talented players in the world, nevermind the NBA. It’s going to come down to coaching on the USA’s part and what rotation’s they use to make teams play our type of international game (three’s off dribble penetration, fast break game and dominate post work through our big guard/forwards that NO OTHER country can contend with) If they play as a unit, and not as one player is the focal point each time down on offense (this means you 24) they should be able to handle what’s thrown at them this time with the addition on another big time shot-blocker (Oden) and an aggressive on-the ball defender in Kidd.

Hisham says:
i will paint you a picture that i hope will not come true:
As soon as D12, Oden or Bosh come out on the floor and see all those unathletic looking centers, or small guards, they will get slaphappy for the ball, and try to swat everything out of the stadium. i predict foulouts (remeber only 5 are allowed in international play). plus the second or third time that the opponent will have driven and dished the ball on the same posession, the us defense will be completely lost. they’re not used to that kind of patience. just hope kidd keeps everybody in check.
same goes for power slashers like lebron. international teams compensate for a lack of athletic one on one defenders with superb team defense. it will only take 1 game of cold shooting for the US team to have their gold medal dreams crumble before their eyes.
an essential guy in preventing all of this is jason kidd. he’ll hopefully have the leadership to keep everybody’s heads straight. It all comes down to the mental aspect. keep focused and stay patient on offense AND defense. then they will probably be fine

Hisham, scratch my USA basketball analysis. After Lebronze’s comment in the Nick Collison post, it’s easy to see that it’s still a “chore” to represent your country for certain mega-stars.

Melo was the most needed player last year and that is going to continue this year. He is the most valuable to the team.

Might was well name some player, “Three Point Balla’.”

melo is a below-average three point shooter. 25 percent, if i remember right? words quoted in comment no.1 are way off. Kwame Brown is the most completely offensive player in the world.
