Wake coach Skip Prosser dead at 56

One of college hoops’ best coaches passes.

Wake Forest men’s basketball coach Skip Prosser died today when jogging. He was 56.

For those who don’t remember what he did for both the college and, in turn, the pro game, he helped develop Chris Paul into one of the best point guards of the modern era. That led to a pair of NCAA tourney runs over the next couple of years. He also coached the first two of the new breed of the NCAA small forwards: Josh Howard, who would go onto win ACC Player of the Year, and James Posey, while at Xavier.
Sometimes you don’t remember who breeds the most change until we have to write the eulogy. Today we write the eulogy.

Today we lost not only a 1st class coach, but a 1st class human being as well. Coach Prosser always conducted himself with class, dignity, and decency in a profession that is often void of these attributes. He will be dearly missed.
This world is a better place because Coach Prosser passed through. God bless the memory of this fine man!

I saw him in Philly for RBK around the same time, Ryan. I’ll remember him most for his Xavier squad with Lenny Brown and Gary Lumpkin in the backcourt, with James Posey as the sixth man. RIP Skip.
