The SLAM Fresh 10 — 2010

Most of them can’t even shave yet, but learn their names now and Aggrey Sam says you’ll feel like Ms. Cleo when they’re killing the college game in about five years.

The SLAM Fresh 10 - 2010

Rank Name Height Pos Last School Why?
1 Brandon Knight 2010/6-3 PG/SG 1 Pine Crest (FL) A polished scorer and willing distributor, Knight's game is so mature it's easy to forget he's only played one season of high school ball.
2 Jeremy Tyler 2010/6-10 C 2 San Diego (CA) With his combination of tremendous size and skills, Tyler is a man among boys.
3 Jereme Richmond 2010/6-6 SF 3 Waukegan (IL) He's still four years away from honoring his commitment to Illinois, but the potential of this athletic, sweet-shooting wing might be enough to make Bruce Weber forget about the Eric Gordon fiasco.
4 Tristan Thompson 2010/6-8 PF/SF 4 St. Benedict's (NJ) With his uncanny inside-outside game, expect the native Canadian to blow up in Jersey
5 Joe Jackson 2010/6-0 PG/SG NR White Station (TN) A relentless scorer with solid playmaking ability, Jackson's remarkable athleticism offsets his slight frame.
6 DeShaun Thomas 2010/6-7 SF/PF 6 Bishop Luers (IN) Capable of dominating defensively and on the boards, the Ohio State commit can also handle the rock and shoot from the perimeter.
7 Kendall Marshall 2010/6-2 PG 5 Bishop O'Connell (VA) Some college point guards don't run the show as well as the recent UNC commit, who handles the rock, dimes and shoots it like a seasoned vet.
8 Jayvaughn Pinkston 2010/6-6 PF/SF 7 Bishop Loughlin (NY) Pinkston's Barkleyesque frame and game belies his finesse skillset, complete with that NYC playground handle and passing flair.
9 Ralston Turner 2010/6-5 SF/SG NR Muscle Shoals (AL) This explosive wing with hops can do damage on the inside with his power and hops and on the outside with his sweet shooting stroke.
10 Dion Waiters 2010/6-2 SG/PG NR South Kent (CT) He hasn't played a high school game yet, but the Philly native and very early Syracuse commit--he's the cousin of 'Cuse incoming freshman Scoop Jardine--is a gifted athlete and scorer.

not sure what class he’s in but what about the canadian pg Junior Cardougan that plays with Olu Ashoula right now? how’s he doing?

Jul.24 at 4:34 pm

Jake says:
So how old are these guys, 14?

Jul.24 at 4:56 pm

Ben Osborne says:
Jake, your resistance to these rankings has been well stated. We get your point. We’re sticking with 50 seniors, 25 juniors and 10 sophomores and we will rank them all season long. Get used to it (but thanks for reading).

Nadav says:
im with jake…this is getting rediculous

Chris O says:
It’s not like they’re ranking fourth-graders or anything. These kids are on the circuit, why not rank them? Shout out to Ms. Cleo. I loved her fake accent.

ty akins says:
i love that u rank guys when they are young. i like to see who improves by there senior year and who doesn’t.

Jul.25 at 3:17 pm

a. sam says:
maddskizzle: Junior’s doing well, still a high-major recruit. Once he tones up his body, I think he’ll truly be one of the higher-echelon point guards in 2009.
AJ$: Even if I wanted to, I haven’t seen enough players in 2011 to rank that class.

Jul.25 at 4:15 pm

mitch 88 says:
i dont whats so bad about ranking them i mean im 14 and play D1 AAU and knowing who your compation is cant hurt

B.Smooth says:
I will have to agree for the most part on these 10. There some that would go ahead on this list, 1) Jared Sullinger from Ohio. He is great. Has a good feel for the game. At 6′6 he has alot od potential. He already commited of Ohio State, but 4 years is a long time.
2)Pe’Shon Howard from Indiana. Has a awesome feel for the PG position already. Wanted by Big Ten schools already. If his game keeps growing might be the best if not one of the best PG his senior year. Those are two i feel need to be mentioned, but other than that. Great List!

Jul.27 at 6:15 pm

a. sam says:
B.Smooth: I strongly considered putting both of them in my top 10. I haven’t seen Sullinger live yet, but obviously he’s already a beast. My only concern with him is that if he doesn’t grow, can he make the transition to the wing or just be an undersized warrior. I’ve seen Pe’Shon a few times this summer (check out my RBK Breakout post) and I think he’s extremely solid, but not quite as dynamic as the other point guards on my list. He’s built like a college player already and has the same type of savvy, so let’s hope he keeps developing. By the way, he’s from Ohio, not Indiana, and is the high school and AAU teammate of Michigan State commit Delvon Roe.

You forgot fuquan Edwin from New Jersey, he is arguably the best player in class of 2010, within the NY/NJ/Conn Metro area. ps. get on your job!

Aug.5 at 5:33 pm

tiger says:
Observer is an idiot. I know 2 of these kids are both 15.

Aug.7 at 10:12 am

Old School Baller says:
Nice list. Given the recent trend in kids deciding to “reclassify” in order become more dominate against younger competition and therefore, skew the rankings, it would be interesting to list the ages of these kids as well.

Aug.8 at 3:12 pm

DMV repper says:
A. Markel Starks (Georgetown Prep–Combo Gaurd) and Tyler Thornton (Gonzaga–Combo Gaurd) are better than Kendall Marshall. B. You need to check up on your facts, but Kendall’s dad is a scout…Case Closed

a. sam says:
funkalot: Fuquan is tough, but I’d like to see that J get a little better. Old School/Wow: Thanks. DMV/nique: I’ve heard good things about Markel and Tyler, but I’ve seen Kendall get it done against players much older than him.

Aug.15 at 9:54 am

Old School Baller says:
So Aggrey, when are you going to list the ages of these kids? I have access to Scout.com and Hoop Scoop and your list here doesn’t tell me anymore what they do. I would be less excited about a kid if I found out they were a year to two years older than everybody else. If you really want to be on the cutting edge as Slam claims to be, then take your list(s) a step further and tell your readers who (i) is good relative to their age (ii) who’s “ringin”. You can’t tell me that you don’t need to “ring the alarm” on some of these grown men on your list.

wheres that kid from california supreme?

Aug.28 at 2:09 pm

JoJo says:
A.Sams, why did Cameron Wright get taken out of the top 60 players in the country and dropped from a 83 to a 70 on ESPN. I understand all the hype around All Ohio Red and there 4 major players but Wright had a heckuva summer and ran a lot of the point being a 6′5 Guard. Especially in the Main Event in Las Vegas he basically willed his King James team throug that tournament and almost had a triple double in the finals against drew goodens team. 15 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists, and 5 steals. he’s a all around player that is not getting any love…tell me whats up with that.
