The SLAM Fresh 50 — 2008

Aggrey Sam helps us get familiar with the best high school players in the nation.

by Aggrey Sam

This is the Aggrey Sam Fresh 50 — the who’s who of the high school class of 2008 — where high school expert Aggrey Sam will separate the Lenny Cookes from the LeBron Jameses and tell you where they might be headed. Check out 2009 on Monday and 2010 on Tuesday.

The Aggrey Sam Fresh 50 - 2008

Rank Name Ht Pos Last School College? Why
1 Tyreke Evans 6-5 SG/PG 1 American Christian (PA) UConn, L'ville, Memphis, Seton Hall, Texas, 'Nova Say what you want about "Too Easy," but 'Reke straight gets buckets against any and everybody.
2 Brandon Jennings 6-1 PG 2 Oak Hill (VA) Arizona Unstoppable off the dribble and a magician with the rock, comparisons to a young Kenny Anderson are pretty on point--except the Cali kid can jump out of the building.
3 Greg Monroe 6-10 PF/C 3 Helen Cox (LA) Georgetown The big lefty can dominate the paint like a traditional big man, but he can also handle the ball, shoot it and dish like a guard.
4 Samardo Samuels 6-9 PF/C 5 St. Benedict's (NJ) Louisville A manchild in the paint, the big fella from Jamaica is very skilled and much more agile than he looks.
5 Jrue Holiday 6-4 PG/SG 4 Campbell Hall (CA) UCLA A pass-first guard who powers his way to the rack at will, Holiday's best trait might be his defensive ability.
6 Devin Ebanks 6-9 SF 9 St. Thomas More (CT) Indiana Pretty much unguardable on the high school level, the NYC native has the handle and range to become a big-time scorer at the next level.
7 Delvon Roe 6-8 PF/SF 6 St. Edward (OH) Michigan State Rugged and athletic just like Tom Izzo likes 'em, Roe's developing perimeter game makes him a mismatch for any defender.
8 Willie Warren 6-4 SG/PG 8 North Crowley (TX) Baylor, Florida, Kansas, Kentucky, OK St., Texas, Louisville, Oklahoma A power guard who can score from anywhere on the court, adding point-guard skills makes this Texas gunslinger that much harder to contain.
9 Demar DeRozan 6-6 SG 13 Compton (CA) USC One of the best athletes in the country, DeRozan's J is now as feared as his high-flying acrobatics.
10 Al-Farouq Aminu 6-9 SF/PF 7 Norcross (GA) Wake Forest As skilled as he is long, Aminu's athleticism and guard skills scream out future pro.
11 Tyler Zeller 6-11 PF/C 11 Washington (IN) Ind., UNC, ND, Purdue Faster than a lot of guards with a soft touch and good range, the slender big man isn't afraid to mix it up.
12 Elliott Williams 6-4 SG/PG 10 St. George's (TN) Duke, Memphis, Tennessee, Virginia An assassin from deep with explosive hops and a tight handle, the unselfish Williams is also gritty enough to hit the boards and lock up on D.
13 B.J. Mullens 7-1 C 21 Canal Winchester (OH) Ohio State An athletic post player who runs the floor well, Mullens is an extremely effective shot blocker, low-block scorer and rebound magnet.
14 Ed Davis 6-9 PF 12 Benedictine (VA) North Carolina The son of former NBA player Terry Davis is a scoring machine in the post who is also a force on the boards and on D.
15 John Riek 7-1 C NR Winchendon (MA) UConn, Duke, Fla., G'town, NBA The Sudanese prospect is still very raw, but his length, feel for the game, touch and agility have high-major coaches and pro scouts excited--not to mention his dominant shot-blocking ability.
16 Mike Dunigan 6-10 C/PF 17 Farragut (IL) Oregon Dunigan's dominance on D and the boards was always evident, but now he plays with a consistent mean streak and is virtually unstoppable in the post.
17 Malcolm Lee 6-5 PG/SG 25 North (CA) UCLA A lanky scoring point with a tight handle and great range, Lee also has sick dimes and the potential to be a stopper on D.
18 JaMychal Green 6-8 PF 26 St. Jude (AL) Alabama Green is a beast around the bucket and a rebounding machine with a soft touch out to 15 feet and post moves galore.
19 Scotty Hopson 6-6 SG/SF 29 University Heights (KY) Mississippi State Explosiveness is the name of the game for Hopson, who can get up with the best of them, but is also a polished scorer.
20 Terrence Jennings 6-10 C/PF 14 Notre Dame (MA) Louisville His explosiveness, agility, power around the hoop and rebounding and shot-blocking efforts bring to mind a young Amare.
21 Romero Osby 6-8 SF/PF 16 Northeast Lauderdale (MS) Mississippi State While he's a terrific slasher, an effective rebounder and a highlight waiting to happen in transition, Osby's size, handle and passing have many projecting him as a point forward on the next level.
22 Emmanuel Negedu 6-8 PF 18 Brewster (NH) Arizona A tough customer on the interior with a tremendous motor and athleticism, Negedu can also handle the rock and step outside to hit jumpers.
23 DeAndre Liggins 6-6 PG/SF 19 Findlay (NV) Kentucky "The Ticket," a lanky Chicago native, has developed more of a scoring mentality to go with his crazy court vision and handle.
24 Chris Singleton 6-8 SF/PF 24 Cherokee (GA) G'town, FSU, UK, Tenn. An extremely athletic swingman who can hit the 3, Singleton is a transition terror whose wing game is getting scary, too.
25 Luke Babbitt 6-8 PF/SF 38 Galena (NV) Nevada Skilled in the post and on the perimeter, the versatile Babbitt is a steal for in-state Nevada.
26 Angel Garcia 6-11 PF 20 East Chicago Central (IN) Memphis The Puerto Rican can hit treys and put it on the floor like a wing, while also getting on the boards, blocking shots and finishing strong like a big man should.
27 William Buford 6-5 SG 27 Libbey (OH) Ohio State A scorer without being a gunner, the smooth wing is almost automatic from deep and an explosive athlete.
28 Kemba Walker 6-0 PG 28 Rice (NY) Connecticut The NYC native is a classic Big Apple point guard who makes his teammates better, harasses foes on D and gets wherever he wants with his handle.
29 Tony Mitchell 6-7 SF 33 Swainsboro (GA) Alabama An efficient and athletic swingman, Mitchell can get to the rack, hit the mid-range J and bury it from deep.
30 Mike Rosario 6-3 SG/PG 34 St. Anthony (NJ) Rutgers A sniper from deep with a big heart, Rosario is also a lockdown defender who can get to the rack and function as a playmaker.
31 Iman Shumpert 6-4 SG/PG 22 Oak Park-River Forest (IL) Georgia Tech Shumpert is an efficient scorer with a pure stroke and good athleticism, but he's also a heady playmaker who will probably run the show in college.
32 J'Mison Morgan 6-11 C 32 South Oak Cliff (TX) 'Bama, Kansas, Kentucky, LSU, L'ville, UCLA "Bobo" is a giant among men--well, boys--but has great hands, improving post moves and footwork, nice passing ability and finishes, blocks shots and rebounds with a lot of power.
33 Ty Walker 7-0 C/PF 23 New Hanover (NC) Wake Forest Brimming with potential, Walker is a long shot-blocking presence who runs the floor like a guard, rebounds well and has range on his J.
34 Courtney Fortson 6-0 PG 30 Patterson (NC) Arkansas While he's great at pushing the tempo, hitting off his teammates and pressuring the ball, the dreadlocked Fortson also relishes battling tall trees in the paint, either to finish tough drives or snatch boards from them.
35 Mookie Jones 6-6 SF/PF 37 Peekskill (NY) Syracuse An athletic slasher who's willing to bang on the interior, Jones' burgeoning guard skills and shooting ability have improved his stock.
36 Kenny Kadji 6-11 C/PF NR IMG (FL) Florida While he's great at pushing the tempo, hitting off his teammates and pressuring the ball, the dreadlocked Fortson also relishes battling tall trees in the paint, either to finish tough drives or snatch boards from them.
37 Nate Miles 6-7 SF/SG 35 Patterson (NC) Connecticut A scoring machine, Miles has a sweet stroke from deep, a good handle and athletic ability and nice size for the wing.
38 Matt Simpkins 6-9 PF/SF NR Bridgton (ME) 'Zona, Cal, UConn, UNLV, USC, Wash. The versatile, lanky and athletic Cali forward can face up, score in the post and get out in transition.
39 Eloy Vargas 6-11 PF/C 40 American Heritage (FL) Florida With his shot-blocking ability, the ballhandling of a wing and 3-point shooting, the sky's the limit for the lanky Dominican.
40 Darius Miller 6-7 SF 41 Mason County (KY) Kentucky Miller possesses good size for his position, a defensive mindset, good athleticism and is solid in all aspects on O.
41 Kevin Jones 6-8 PF 39 Mount Vernon (NY) UConn, Ind., Kansas, UMass, Ohio St., Pitt, Rutgers, St. John's Able to face up big men and hit the 15-footer with consistency, Jones is at his best when he bangs in the low post, where he scores and rebounds at a high level.
42 Renaldo Woolridge 6-8 SF NR Harvard-Westlake (CA) Tennessee Former pro Orlando Woolridge's son is a smooth, athletic wing who can get to the whole and shoot it from deep equally well.
43 Terrelle Pryor 6-7 SF/PF 47 Jeannette (PA) Fla., Mich., Mich. St., ND, Ohio St., Penn St., WVU The nation's top football prospect as a QB, the crazy athletic Pryor can do a little bit of everything on the hardwood.
44 Yancy Gates 6-9 PF/C 42 Withrow (OH) Cincinnati Gates is a manchild who can control the boards, punch shots on D and finish with authority over all comers.
45 Kenny Frease 7-0 C 44 Perry (OH) Xavier The big fella is a huge post presence with good footwork, a soft touch and the ability to step out.
46 Rotnei Clarke 6-1 SG/PG 48 Verdigris (OK) Ariz. St., Ark., Gonzaga, Kansas, Kentucky, Okla., Oral Rob. One of the country's premier snipers from long range, Clarke's ability to run the point makes him a top-shelf recruit.
47 Lance Goulbourne 6-8 SF/PF 50 Hun (NJ) Vanderbilt Smooth and athletic, the versatile slasher thrives in transition, can knock down the open J and doesn't mind doing the dirty work.
48 DeQuan Jones 6-8 SF NR Wheeler (GA) Miami The high-flying Jones is a dynamic slasher that hits the open J and thrives in transition.
49 Sean Mosley 6-4 SG/SF NR St. Frances (MD) Maryland The hard-nosed B-More swingman doesn't have the flashiest game, but is solid in all aspects--from handling the rock, playing tough D, banging with the tall trees and hitting jumpers from way out.
50 Verdell Jones 6-4 PG/SG NR Central (IL) DePaul, Kansas, Kentucky, Marquette, Minn., Tenn. A slightly-built guard from Shaun Livingston's hometown, Jones' seamless ballhandling and court vision are reminiscent of the injured Clipper.

Thanks, Aggrey. I’ll print this out for future reference. Very thorough job.

Ben Osborne says:
Word up. Aggrey is not playing around. You all know that this site remains a work in progress, but sometime soon, we will have Aggrey’s rankings on the classes of 08, 09 and 2010 up, and they will have a consistent home on the site. He will also be updating them throughout the season. Slamo

Ben Osborne says:
Sorry…got cut off there. As I was saying, Slamonline isn’t known for it’s high school coverage—yet. But between Aggrey and Ryan I feel like we have guys who know the game and the players as well as anyone else, and we plan to do a better job making their knowledge accessible. In the meantime, read Aggrey’s list and watch these players make us look good.

this is epic. fantastic work, aggrey.

Jul.20 at 11:29 am

Ryan Jones says:
AGGREY! You’re killin’ em. Pretty soon we’ll have you ranking third graders like Clark Francis and this sh*t will be OVER.

Jul.20 at 11:30 am

Ryan Jones says:
Just in case the sarcasm wasn’t clear: This is dope. Nice work man.

Jul.20 at 11:32 am

Ben Osborne says:
Thanks to Ben Collins as well, who built the fancy grid/table that Aggrey plugged his rankings in to. Of course, if I was 13 years old and took “HTML classes in middle school” like Ben Collins did, I probably could’ve done this too. I kid, BC.

Jul.20 at 12:03 pm

Ryan Jones says:
Screw Ben Collins. I didn’t get a slamonline email last week, so he gets nothing from me.

ROMERO OSBY! MISSISSIPPI STAND UP! but on a serious I have to admit that Reke is a Kobe in the making. He is going to kill in college and I expect him to be a top 5 pick in the NBA Draft. play wit it.

Cheryl says:
I don’t know if we say it enuf, Slam crew, but you guys have The. Best. Product. Period. If they have awards for best magazine with an online feature, you guys should win hands down. You’ve been ahead of the times for several years now. And the accolades could go on and on, but I gotta get back to work!

Jul.20 at 5:10 pm

Florida says:
R.I.P. Dante Anderson. This kid out of Gainesville would have been on this list. Unfortunately, he passed in a car accident. Deepest sympathies to his family and others that knew him. RBK U honored him big time. He split MVP honors with Brandon Jennings last year.

hoblin22 says:
The Canadaians are representing very well(for us anyways)And by the sounds of it Olu has really stepped up his game this summer. He wasnt even in the top 150 on rivals and now you guys are saying fifteen. It seemed like his star was falling off but now hes right back on track. Hopefully Junior Cadougan becomes a top twenty prospect before hes done also. What do you guys think?

Jul.20 at 8:33 pm

Zee says:
What?!? No Romeo Miller? I’m shocked!!

Jul.21 at 1:28 pm

Specs says:
It’s about damn time that list was made up properly. Props on a job well done.

Jul.21 at 2:07 pm

see-murda says:
I was gonna ask the same question about Junior. He hasnt been runing with the national team, seems to have dwindled off the radar. Sorta a slap in the fae to the canadians who finally had a giant feature on one of our own, only to fade into obscurity

ty evans is the truth so is b jennings i wish they both go to the same college they would win the 08 ncaa ship

Courtney Fortson’s gonna be a beast this year. I know first hand from my team playing against him 6 times. Prep School’s gonna give him the exposure he needed earlier in his career.

bigmike407 says:
A thorough list that I will constantly refer to until signing day 2008. Aggrey Sam, excellent look

Jul.22 at 1:57 pm

Jon Doe says:
All I am saying is this, if Greg Monroe isn’t tops in the country then the two ahead of him muct be men. I have been watching greg since he was a freshman and the kid is amazing. So Evans and Jennings must be the deal. Haven’t seen them yet so I am looking forward tocatching them. Also, when you do the Class of 2010 you better check out Langston Galloway from Baton Rouge, LA. He is a 6′1 G who has one of the best pure shots in the country. He is playing at the Main Event this week with HP Elite in the 15U division.

Jul.22 at 4:06 pm

Ben Osborne says:
Thanks for all the comments, most of which seem positive. @Domo, I’ll let Aggrey explain why Korie didn’t make this list, but I can tell you there’s a story on him in the current issue of SLAM, which is on sale now.

Jul.22 at 5:47 pm

tike says:
Nice aggrey im glad you got Reke #1…ooh and you got my man who i know personally Terrell Pryor “TP” but all the way to number 47?…well hey i urge you fellas too check em out on the field MONSTER!!

Jul.23 at 8:19 am

Ryan Jones says:
tike: As the resident (and only) Penn State guy in these parts, I know all about Pryor, and I know (as I’m sure you do) that he’s probably a better FB prospect than he is for hoops. If we did a gridiron ranking, I’m sure he’d be higher up. Either way, I really hope he and I are neighbors next fall…

Jul.23 at 9:42 am

Jake says:
Slam (or anyone) rating high school players seems really creepy, but I guess that’s just me.

Jul.23 at 2:35 pm

Ryan Jones says:
It is, Jake. But it’s also necessary. This is the basketball media version of going to the dentist — you know it’s going to be mad uncomfortable, but you sort of need to do it. At least with us (well, at least with Aggrey), you’ve got someone who actually knows how the “play basketball” doing the rankings, which one quick look at a lot of the other talent scouts will tell you is not the norm.

Jul.23 at 3:45 pm

Jon Lester says:
You guys should check two underated kids in the class of 08. They attend MLK high school in Lithonia, Ga. Their team last went to the final four. Their names are Demetruis Bates 6′2 Gaurd and Greg Henry 6′4 forward. Watch out for these two young men.

Jul.24 at 12:04 am

Glen says:
Drew Gordon (the only one of these guys I’ve had the pleasure of seeing play live) can flat ball. He’s gonna be good in SoCal…

Jul.24 at 9:26 am

Jake says:
Good point, Ryan.

Jul.24 at 11:39 pm

tike says:
I dnt know if i call it creepy but i like when aggrey rates the kids…oh and Ryan i take it you want “TP” to go to state?….i personally hope he goes too michigan boy that’d be sweet.

Jul.25 at 3:46 pm

a. sam says:
Cheryl/mutoni/Ben/Ryanspecs/bigmike407: Much appreciated.
hoblin/see-murda: Junior is ranked pretty high by a lot of recruiting people, but I just feel like he has to get in better shape to justify such a lofty status. I will say he’s talented and crafty scorer (a lot of folks make the obvious El-Amin comparisons; I think he’s more like a John Bagley, if anyone here is old enough to remember him) who has plenty of time to get back on top.
Domo: Korie is tough, but I have to go off what I see. When he was putting in work at the USA Festival, I was at NBPA Camp so unfortunately he doesn’t get the same benefit of the doubt Malcolm Lee, who I watched at RBKU, gets. Yeah, he did his thing there, but that was one event. He’s a good scorer, but I want a point guard who’s been talked about since middle school to be more of a distributor. Every so-called expert has their biases and one of mine is favoring pass-first points over small scoring points.
tike: I probably do have Pryor too low, but being top 50 in the nation when you probably only get six months or so to focus on hoops isn’t bad. If he quit football, I’d bet he’d be a consensus top 20.

SLAM ONLINE | » You had questions about SLAM… says:
[…] Ed.: Ultimately, I do. But between high school experts Ryan Jones and Aggrey Sam and the rest of a staff that all at least casually follow high school hoops, I certainly feel like I have good people to bounce names off of before picking someone. This was the first year for me to choose, but I think going with Tyreke Evans (who debuted in the Spurs issue that is on sale now) stuck with what Tony, Russ and Ryan had done before me: pick the most compelling high school player in his class. Tyreke may very well be the “best” player in the class of ‘08 (Aggrey thinks so), but it was just as important to me that the long time he’s spent in the Philly spotlight and a very involved family insured that he’d have some good stuff to write about on a monthly basis. […]

Queensfinest says:
Are you serious? No mention of Erving Walker? The point guard from Christ the King H.S. in Middle Village, N.Y. He’s the best (under 6′0′’) player in the nation, who can score at will, with range that is rediculous! He’s definitely top 50!

Aug.13 at 6:01 pm

a. sam says:
Domo: I just saw Korie at adidas Nations last week. Impressive quickness and ability to hit tough shots. Top 50? You’ll see when I update my rankings later this week. Queensfinest: Every evaluator has his/her biases when it comes to evaluating players and while Erving is definitely nice, one of my criteria is how effective a kid will be in college, especially at the level he’s supposed to end up at (in Erving’s case, he’s committed to Florida). With Jai Lucas (another small point) ahead of him by one year, I can’t say he’ll be an impact guy right away. On top of that, I think Malik Boothe ran the 1 for CTK, while Erving was more of a 2. Not too many Earl Boykins in the world.

korie aint grown in about 5 years and same wit erving thats why u cannot always worry about your rnakings coming out of 8th grade dont get me wrong they are both good players but top 50 i think not… when ranking players you cant just go by offense but defense as well both of them under 6 feet cause match up problems especially against combo guards

Aug.20 at 8:19 pm

Domo says:
SHAUN: TOP 50 I THINK SO. KORIE IS PLAYING WITH THE TOP PLAYERS AT ADIDAS NATION. HE PUT UP BIG NUMBERS AT THE USA COLOARDO BASKET BALL FESTIVAL ON THE COUNTRIE’S BEST. AND BEFORE EVEN PLAYING A MINUTE OF HIGH SCHOOL BASKET BALL GOING INTO HIS FRESHMEN YR HE WENT TO ADIDAS SUPERSTAR CAMP AND SHOWED OUT EARNING UNDERCLASSMEN ALL STAR HONORS. FOR PROOF READ SLAM NOV 04 ISSUE 82. HE ALSO MURDERD AT THE 05 ADIDAS CAMP. FOR PROOF READ SLAM NOV 05 ISSUE 92. FOR HIS FIRST 2 YEARS OF HIGH SCHOOL HE WAS TOP 5. I FEEL THE REASON HE DROPPED OFF THE TOP 5 NATIONALLY BECAUSE SCOUTS COMPLAIN ABOUT HIM BEING UNDER SIX FEET. I FEEL THAT HEIGHT DOESNT MATTER. THE TRUTH IS THAT KORIE LUCIOUS IS NATURALLY GIFTED TO PLAY THE GAME OF BASKET BALL. EVERY TIME HE GOES TO PLAY AGAINST THE NATIONS BEST HE SHOWS OUT, MAKES A NAME FOR HIMSELF, AND MOST OF ALL SHOWS HOW WE GET DOWN IN THE MIL TOWN STRAIGHT BUCKETS ON WHO EVER NO FEAR. M-STATE DID NOT GIVE HIM A SHOLARSHIP JUST FOR THE HELL OF IT. I WOULD CONTINUE BUT IM TIRED OF EXPLAINING WHY KORIE SHOULD B TOP 50. ANY DISAGREEMENTS ABOUT MY CASE ON WHY HE’S TOP 50, JUST GET BACK AT ME ON MY FAVORITE MAGZINE WEBSITE (SLAM). I GHOST..!!

Wow, SLAM… i cant actually believe that Tyler Zeller is on the top 50 yet alone the top 20. He’s at number 11, he’s a hard worker cause ive played with him and also watched him play. He has much recogniziton from his older brother Luke Zeller, being that here at washington in 05″ he helped the hatchets win a State Championship. Tyler is quicker then most ppl thank, and cant hit freethrows all day. But in my opinion he needs to work on his mid range shot and gain bout 20 pounds or so. But other then that, watch out for class 2011. Cody Zeller, Luke and Tylers brother is already 6′2 or so and is only and 9th grade. Dont worry im comin up 2, next year ill be a senior and plan on goin to ISU, or UNC so look for me there!

Wow, SLAM u have Tyler Zeller from here at my school at Washington, IN on the top 50 let alone at the 11 spot. I wouldnt of ever thought to put him up there on the list, but then u guys at slam predict alot of players careers! Let me say that he is a great player and person, i played with him before and have seen him play many times. He’s a good post player and can hit the 3 when needed as well as freethrows all day! Alot of people dont give him credit for as much as speed that he has, but for a big man he’s pretty quick and has great foot work. In my opinion as a player on the streets and crazed basketball FANATIC, i think he needs to work a little more on his mid range shot and a little more footwork. His older brother Luke is Notre Dame right now, and this is his senior year here. But watch out for his youngest brother who is now a freshman and is already 6″3 or 6″4! I’m thinkin the same thang u guys are now! He’s gotten alot of recogniziton from his older brother Luke at Notre Dame, his brother helped us here at Washington win a State Championship in 05″, lets see if Tyler can pull somethin for his last year here? Watch out for next year for class of 09″ of my senior year, i plan on playin and workin my tail off. Most likely ill be goin to college at ISU where Bird played or at UNC which is my all time favorites and where many greats have played under Dean Smith and Roy Williams. Maybe ill be in or on the cover of one of the new SLAM magazines i read every month? But until then, ill be keeping updated with every issue, matter infact im readin the newest on with Tony Parker on the front!

Loved watching Tyreke play during Elite 24 practice Thursday; dude really does score with ease. Looking forward to Aggrey’s evaluations from the game, as well as his updated rankings.

Brondon Jennings is the best player in this class. He could play the 1 or the 2 at Arizona.I watched him play on TV a couple of months ago,and he was awesome. He can flat out fill it up from 3 point range and he can slash and has the strengh to finish the play.He will probably stay one year,2 at the most, and he will be a good point guard at the next level.
