T-Wolves trade for Al Jefferson, Gerald Green, Bassy!

By Sam Rubenstein

There are two sides to every story, and I guess we might as well mention KEVIN GARNETT’s former team, the Minnesota Timberwolves. I mean, if we have to. They do still have an official team site, and man is there a lot of Randy Foye stuff on there now.

“This trade is about improving the Minnesota Timberwolves and improving our team for the future,” said Timberwolves Vice President of Basketball Operations Kevin McHale. “The past few seasons our on-court performance has been disappointing to our fans, myself, Glen Taylor and the entire organization. Through this trade, we have obtained very talented, young players with a lot of potential, future flexibility with the salary cap and two future first-round NBA draft picks. This will not be an overnight fix, but it is the big step in renewing our commitment to build an exciting franchise for our fans.”

Hey, no pressure Al Jefferson, other guys. Minnesota fans, you got some youth and talent. Um… good luck in that Western Conference.

It’s not like they’re going to make the playoffs any less, Sam.

Co Co says:
good point Ryan

Jul.31 at 4:48 pm

Mo Charlo says:
Maybe they can turn around and trade all five of those guys for STAT, Kobe, TD, or someone else proven to build a team around.

Jul.31 at 4:50 pm

Co Co says:
Didn’t you watch through the fire Mo? Are you not convinced a team can build around Bassy???

Jul.31 at 4:51 pm

Sam Rubenstein says:
Perhaps, but it’s also a way for McHale to say look we’re rebuilding give me 3 more years to turn this baby around. He is a sneaky one.

Jul.31 at 5:01 pm

Detroit11 says:
Both McHale and Ainge keep their jobs because of this trade. Nothing more, nothing less…

Nadav says:
how jealous is kb of kg now?

Jul.31 at 5:07 pm

Sammy says:
What else does Boston need to be a Championship contender or are the already one? They have no bench in my opinion, and they need a veteran PG

Jul.31 at 5:08 pm

H to the izzo says:
I do hope McHale builds the team around Bassy,Stern could make a team sign Darius Washington so we could have “Overhyped rivalry part duex”

Ben (It´s me Rob!!!) says:
10th!!! Man, Boston needs two Balls per game to satisfy
P², Sugar Ray and KG…hope this works out for all of them!!!

Reggie Evans says:
Kobe just threw up in Jim Buss’ mouth.

Jul.31 at 5:20 pm

Sammy says:
Hey did you also see that the Red Sox got Eric Gagne. Can anyone see that all three Boston teams, will win the chip this year. Well of course there’s the Bruins too, but who cares about Hockey.

Jul.31 at 5:45 pm

Blue says:
Yeah Sam…It’s his sneaky a** that’s had the Wolves “rebuilding” with no draft picks for most of this “Rebuilding / Win Now / Just Kidding” rebuilding phase. Hey…I wonder if Joe Smith’s available?

Jul.31 at 5:47 pm

Dblizzy! says:
I don’t! And Reggie that was funny! With that said, all the TWolves have to do now is tank the season, get the #1 draft pick and take Greg Oden… oh…well…nevermind

Jul.31 at 6:07 pm

2 says:
If the minnesota organization thinks we can live without one kevin, i think we can live without the other kevin.
Mchale you are a dissapointment to the organization and to the NBA. You cound’t give garnett a surrounding team and now you trade him after all his loyal years. You should be fired.

Jul.31 at 6:35 pm

Gerard Himself says:
Since KG will play with #5, it would be cool if they played the chorus of “I’ve got 5 on it” by Da Luniz everytime KG would enter the game.

need more vets… maybe doc can feed Spree’s starving kids…

Jul.31 at 6:38 pm

Bring in Brevin Knight!

Jul.31 at 7:24 pm

John from Miami says:
Now Miami can work out a deal and trade Smush Parker for Kevin Garnett!!!

Jul.31 at 7:32 pm

Joel O's says:
New meaning to “It takes 5?” I wonder how the Celtics will gel, though. Can they share the ball? Shouldn’t be a problem… But on paper they’re already top 4 in the East, at least.

Jul.31 at 7:56 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
“By the way, we also got rid of the best basketball player in Minnesota history since George Mikan. Unless you count myself, which I do.”

Jul.31 at 8:21 pm

Question says:
Word Gerard… Brevin Knight is the key, an unselfish playmaker… use some of the mid-level and screw the luxury tax implications I say…

Jul.31 at 8:31 pm

S. says:
can we get a celtics cover with pierce garnett and allen and the title “TRIPLE C”??

Jul.31 at 9:04 pm

gii says:
so, when is boston going to celebrate kevin mchale day?

Jul.31 at 9:35 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
I think they already screwed the luxury tax implications by giving KG a three-year extension. If LeBron wants to be basketball’s first billionaire, he’d better hurry the f*ck up. (Jordan would have been a billionaire by now, but he keeps making ill-advised golf bets with friends of Tim Donaghy. Allegedly.)

Jul.31 at 9:37 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
And hey Sam, Randy Foye WAS the second-best lottery pick with a last name that rhymes with “Oi!” to come out of the ‘06 Draft. Wreckanize, foo’!

Jul.31 at 9:38 pm

niQ says:
i actually wana see how minni will fair this year without KG.. and how Al Jefferson will do after his monster year

Jul.31 at 11:18 pm

ish says:
its for bassy to be a elite player now with the team he got

Aug.1 at 12:29 am

whooo! says:
so minnesota is now what boston was last year, MINUS an all-star caliber player, and playing in the f’n west!

Aug.1 at 2:14 am

kyle says:
you gotta make a cover of the celtics big three now!!fast!!

Aug.1 at 3:22 am

solid snake says:
will bassy even play?

Aug.1 at 3:45 am

Sesa says:
So, suddenly everybody’s worshipping Danny Ainge and jumping to Celtics bandwagon.
To me, this is just temporary solution by Ainge to save his job. There’s only 2-3 season left to get the championship banner for the Celts by depending on those three guys, after that the Celtics are in salary cap trouble.

Aug.1 at 5:57 am

whistler says:
Sesa: maybe, but getting one or two chips in the next three years would be a lot better than most GMs!

Aug.1 at 8:04 am

Alex says:
I don’t think this is a good move for Boston. Al Jefferson is a double double machine and he is young, he is going to get even better. Green also has a good potential. They had a very good team bringing in Allen. Why KG? Don’t get me wrong he is a great player but Boston doesn’t need him. This is a mistake by Boston in the long run. I think Minnesota did a great job. They are not going to do a lot this year but they now have a young and good team to build on. If they get a good free agent on the next years loaded free agent market they will be a force.

Aug.1 at 9:48 am

Hightz says:
so does this mean Bosh will lose his start in the all star game =(

Aug.1 at 10:27 am

Russ Bengtson says:
Minnesota had a “young and good team to build on” back in 1999 too—Stephon, KG, Joe Smith and Rasho Nesterovich were all 23 or younger—and look what it got them. At some point you gotta make a move.

Aug.1 at 10:28 am

Russ Bengtson says:
Sorry about the “h” on Nesterovic, my Eastern European peoples.

Aug.1 at 11:47 am

Froggiestyle says:
good god, the only bright side if you’re a minny fan is it takes ALL the pressure off - ie. ZERO expectations with that line up - no hope but to rebuild in a year or 2 or 3 or….. WTF did McHale do? Is he still a Celtic after all?

Aug.1 at 11:53 am

tike says:
hey its defintley a upgrade but looks like Boston got a very good chance of winning the East teams like Toronto and Washington should be a little to nervous…and this trade should make Lebron wanna get another Star because Larry Hughes isnt cuttting it..

Aug.1 at 12:49 pm

Wolvesfan says:
I hate McHale more than evrything because of him I might be a Celtic now.

Aug.1 at 1:59 pm

dblizzy! says:
Yeah everyone is talking about the future, the future. You can’t always think that way, you have to think about NOW. And right now, KG Ray and PP are thre of the top 20 players in the league and i think they can get it done in the east. There are too many factors, injuries, free agency, strip clubs, that can ruin the future. Thinking of the future is the reason why things like Darko getting drafted before… 10 better players happen.

Aug.1 at 2:01 pm

Jake says:
For me, bottom line is that before I had ZERO interest in watching either team, but now I really want to watch the Celtics play.

Aug.1 at 3:32 pm

law says:
The T’Wolves got the best of this trade! Green and Jefferson are solid ball players. Bassy is average, and the 2 first-round picks just put the cherry on top! KG is good, but he is not worth 5 players. Maybe he was 2 or 3 years ago. The Celtics have improved their chances for next year if their goal is winning the East. And Chi-Town might have something to say about that, but really, 3 seasons from now Boston will be an old team, looking for the same youth they just traded! Not to mention that they still need a Point Guard, and whoever wins the West is gonna win the L anyway! Bad move-Bad move!

Aug.1 at 3:37 pm

bigmike407 says:
This deal was a showdown between the League’s worst GM’s and McHale blinked. He folded and traded a franchise player in order to rebuild. On paper this looks good, but then you remember that the Wolves are in the West, where at least one decent team will miss the playoffs every year. So this rebuilding may take about 6-8 years before it pans out. I thought Telfair was released? How did he end up in the deal? And all these NBA reporters keep saying how the Wolves got under the cap, but they still have to pay Ratliff’s enormous contract. They’re paying for his suits as he sits on the bench. Also, Boston looks good now, but they are one injury away from the bottom, just like every other team in the NBA. So I hope Jesus and P2 are healed up and ready for the long haul.

Aug.1 at 3:50 pm

Rob says:
I totally diagree with the man above who name is law. I think that this trade was the best trade. Mainly because Kevin Garnette is my favorite player(yeah)

Aug.1 at 5:22 pm

Mo Daddy says:
KG, PP and Jesus is one hell of a trio. and none of em are young enough to have chemistry issues. imagine Phil Jackson coaching this team.

Aug.2 at 2:46 am

dan says:
Well the celtics have already signed a back up pg in eddie house today and are looking to sign Mutumbo.

Gerald Green Say
i don’t have teather like i had in boston

Aug.2 at 2:04 pm

mr. 1738 says:
i don’t think the wolves will be as bad as people think they will defenitley have some match up problems for the west because the whole lineup is loaded wit athletic type of players wich means they will run the hell out of you, and the average vertical leapin ability on the team is what now lik 40″ thats gonna be an exciting team to watch and be on the look out for my man G. Green he is a star in the making he has the total package once he gets the “swag” that nonone can guard em he’s gonna be amazing so in the long run the wolves may have pulled off a steal not to mention two future first rounders
