Signings and Scandals. Another day of the NBA summer break.

The Knicks. Rated NC-17

By Sam Rubenstein

I want to thank Stephon Marbury for making my job so much easier and more fun as I crawl towards vacation. From yesterday’s New York Post story about the Isiah-Anucha sexual harassment claim going to trial:

MSG lawyers had tried to have the case tossed, accusing Sanders of trying to obstruct an internal probe into sexual harassment by forcing employees to detail charges supporting her case. Those charges include a claim that Knicks star Stephon Marbury had sex with a staffer.

“She asked at least three people to do these e-mails on an expedited basis on a holiday . . . It was, ‘I am your boss at MSG. You will do this for me right now,’ ” MSG lawyer Miguel Estrada argued.

Sanders, a former Knicks marketing director, reported that a member of her staff admitted having drunken sex with Marbury in November 2005, claiming she “did not believe she could say no because of who Marbury is.”

The staffer, whose name is blacked out in court papers, told Sanders she “was very ashamed about the episode,” which happened in a car after an “evening at a gentleman’s club.”

This allegedly took place in a car after a trip to the strip club. Hello! How are people sleeping on this story? No pun intended. Oh man is this trial going to be humiliating for so many. I’ve got to take a shower after reading about them. The Knicks have come a long way from Alan Houston and Keith Van Horn.

Other less entertaining but more basketball-related news:

P.J. Carlesimo to coach the Sonics and their recently signed youth. With Presti and P.J., they are definitely going for that Spurs of the northwest thing. Kevin Durant, I hope you are not afraid of a little discipline. Insert dated choke joke here.

Chauncey Billups may or may not be re-signing with the Pistons, and Mark Cuban has a lot to say about it. It’s always nice to get lessons on ethics from a guy that is suing an ex-employee because Cubes can’t handle losing with quiet class.

Speaking of class, we (perhaps I) forgot to mention that Derek Fisher is not re-signing with the Jazz because he wants to take care of his daughter. Naturally, the rumor is that he is coming to the Knicks because that’s what everyone is rumored to be doing. His daughter lives in Jersey so her doctors would be nearby. We of course all wish the best for the Fisher family.

Alright, I think I got all the big items from yesterday. Doing a rain dance so our softball game gets cancelled tonight and I can go see TRANSFORMERS.

Sam, enjoy the Transformers! If you just enjoy the movie and the effects, it is one of the most entertaining action movies in years. (IMO, much more entertaining than Spider Man 3 & Pirates 3) Too many people are looking for a War & Peace script and that’s the problem. It’s based on a cartoon and a toy line. Deal with it people!

Charlie Ward will be back soon to save the Knicks’ soul… and offend the Jews, of course.

“It’s always nice to get lessons on ethics from a guy that is suing an ex-employee because Cubes can’t handle losing with quiet class.” Cuban filed a counter-claim regarding Nellie’s lawsuit for failing to pay him deferred compensation. Cuban contends he doesn’t owe Nellie money because he broke the no-compete clause in his consulting contract by taking the Warriors job. Nellie contends Cuban breached the consulting contract by stopping payments. The “inside information” claim made by Nellie’s attorney to characterize Cuban’s counter-suit is just that, a claim. One side in a legal dispute doesn’t have a monopoly on the facts. Where are you qualifiers like “Allegedly” or “According to Nelson’s attorney?”

I really think the Knicks should go way back in the “crazy” time machine and dust off Anthony Mason & Kenny “the Animal” Bannister. Non- Knicks fans might not be familiar with Bannister’s name, but he was there in the mid 80’s and was a complete idiot on the court. Example, would get a dunk in transitition and bulge his eyes out at the nearest defender like it was on them, even if they were 15 feet from him. He also liked to try and goat MJ into getting out of his game (this was when Oakley was still a Bull) early in Mike’s career and one of the funniest moments I ever saw in an NBA game involved Michael coming through the lane , putting up a ridiculous layup over Ewing, landing awkwardly, being pushed from behind by Bannister, knocking Mike in to the basked stansion and Oakley coming up behind Bannister and basically clotheslining Bannister from behind knocking him face first to the ground right next to Mike. It was like human dominos! 1980’s basketball, catch the fever!!

Sam Rubenstein says:
I’m with you eboy. When I was in high school, if you wore Bulls apparel you were putting yourself at risk. There was much violence the day after the Charles Smith game. It was like the toughness of the team trickled down to the fans. I miss that.

Tariq says:
I can’t understand how Jazz went from being a Porsche to a Chevy. Is that an upgrade?! Is Isiah behind that?

Jul.5 at 10:50 am

Ryan Jones says:
Tariq, short answer: This movie is a two-hour General Motors ad. That’s why people like me watch documentaries and art house flicks and like to think we’re smarter than people like you, Sam and Khalid. In fact, Khalid has been talking about this stupid movie since 1994, and I didn’t even know him then. Come and get me Salaam!

Jul.5 at 11:06 am

white hot eboy says:
@ Tariq, classic! Jazz was my favorite Transformer as a kid and to hear him speak like a lost member of G-Unit was hard to take. “What’s crackin’ little bitches?”

Jul.5 at 11:20 am

jj says:
It’s not that fisher is not resigning. Fisher was under contract (for 3 more years and 21 million) and he asked the jazz to void the contract. So essentially the guy is walking away from more than 20 million to take care of his daughter. Perhaps he’ll sign somewhere else, perhaps not, but there’s no way he’s getting more than 2… 3 mill per year. So basically, he is walking away from MILLIONS to take care of his family. RESPECT. The knicks could make use of such a “clean” veteran as this one is… I, as a Jazz fan, for sure will miss him…

Yo Transformers was a classic Michael Bay flick. The only thing missing was the theme song.

Jul.5 at 11:38 am

Sam Rubenstein says:
No offense anyone but I am ignoring any transformers comments for spoiler purposes. There were some raindrops this morning, so odds of seeing it tonight have improved.

Jul.5 at 12:21 pm

Reggie Evans says:
TRANFORMERS SPOILER ALERT: They are robots in disguise. END SPOILER. Also, that movie sets the bar for summer blockbusters: really funny, hot girl, a hot guy (or so I’m told), explosives, and can’t-believe-my-eyes CGI. And having the OG Optimus Prime voice was key!

Jul.5 at 12:23 pm

Reggie Evans says:
SICKO SPOILER ALERT (just for snobs like Ryan Jones): Healthcare in the U.S. needs improvement.

Jul.5 at 12:56 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
I haven’t seen a movie in a theater in…well, over a year. F paying $10-plus to sit through commercials (and then a ridiculously overhyped movie that’s a commercial in and of itself). I’m no model of fiscal responsibility (HA!), but you gotta draw the line somewhere, I guess.

Jul.5 at 1:04 pm

Ryan Jones says:
F*ck you, Reggie. You just ruined by weekend. Now I’ve gotta go see Rescue Dawn — do NOT tell me how that ends.
Max, my kid (singular) is 31 months old. He knows nothing of Transformers, nor does he need to. Unless Curious George starts morphing into Bob the Builder. Then sh*t could get hectic…

Jul.5 at 1:05 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
SPOILER ALERT: Grant Hill to sign two-year deal with Suns.

Jul.5 at 1:18 pm

Tariq says:
Ryan, While Sam and I share a love for The Wire, our viewing habits are drastically different. I hate Lost, Heroes and 24. I can’t stand X-Men. But I want to see Transformers because I loved the cartoons as a kid. And if I have a weakness, it’s cartoons. In fact, here in Saudi Arabia the most popular cartoon when I was a kid was a dubbed Japanese animated series based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island. So I was consuming literature via osmosis even as a tyke. Ergo, never assume you are smarter than me, Mr. Jones. No one is. I possess clarity of mind and superior intellect.

Jul.5 at 1:26 pm

white hot eboy says:
Ryan, my son is 32 months old and he’s lovin’ the Transformers. Especially Bumblebee and Prime. But that’s also because he’s obsessed with cars. And basketball. Ask him to say numbers or letters and he looks at you like your asking him to tell you what the theory of relativity is. But he knows every automobile logo and NBA logo he sees and will sit and rip through SLAM or SI and find every car and basketball picture in them and point them out to me over and over “DADA cars, DaDa, ba-ket-ball”. He gets sensory overload from SLAM, btw.

I know, Illy, I know, but at that age, when they’re actually like 2 1/2 instead of just two, that extra six or seven months makes a big difference — as you know — and I hate typing fractions. Jul.5 at 2:39 pm

Ron says:
Sam, I personally didn’t want to ruin the movie for you, but I will say that if you like the action scenes in the Bad Boys movies you will surely enjoy this one. Megatron could have been more fierce though.

the CGI for transformers was crazy! for some reason they released it in asia last friday. it also reminds you how cool those toys were growing up, and i’m honestly tempted to blow $80 for a 12″ optimus toy that’s even got articulation at his fingers and opposable thumbs.

Transformers is the movie of the summer, hands down… But The Simpsons looks straight hilarious. I wanna go to one of those kwik-e mart 7-elevens and rack up on Simpsons merch.

Jul.5 at 3:43 pm

Jason says:
Megatron was too weak as far as I was concerned, but the movie was better than I expected. Any chance they drag the Isiah trial out to the NBA season and show the whole thing on Court TV like OJ and the Menendez Bros.? It’d be fun to watch the Knicks on trial by day and the Knicks imploding by night. Even more fun if they add Artest to a team that already has Steph, Zach, Nate and Jerome James. I think Isiah’s going for the ‘86 Mets vibe.

Jul.5 at 3:55 pm

Ron says:
If the Knicks added Artest to that team it wouldn’t make a difference because due to various injuries and suspensions they would rarely all play together.

Jul.5 at 4:22 pm

RV says:
this may not be big news, but Spanoulis is refusing to return to the NBA and the Rockets don’t plan on letting him walk, he’s got 2 yrs left….what happens next?

Jul.5 at 4:23 pm

RV says:
is it just me or are the Heat pursuing EVERY free agent and trade-rumored player out there??

Jul.5 at 4:29 pm

RV says:
as for Fisher, i know the guy has class and he’s doing a great thing for his daughter…but it seems a bit contradictory to me, first he said playing is an afterthought and he just wants to go where its best for his daughter, but why is going to a team that he can start for a big deal now? I also heard his agent said he wants 5 mill for 5 yrs….why not get his daughter situated first and then worry about basketball?

Jul.5 at 4:45 pm

Ryan Jones says:
RV, you’ll have to trust what me and pretty much everyone else in the media who’ve dealt with him says about Derek Fisher, which is that he’s about as stand-up a guy as there is in the League. This is his f*cking child, so please don’t even speculate for a second on whether or not he’s got his priorities right, because no matter what your motives are, it sounds absolutely horrible when you do.

Jul.5 at 4:47 pm

Reggie Evans says:
Don’t f*ck wit Fish … I’m glad Megatron wasn’t a flying gun … I need to work on my segues …

Jul.5 at 5:05 pm

RV says:
I should have worded it better, but i’m not questioning if he’s got his priorities in order, for him to walk away from 20 million says his daughter is #1, i’m just wondering if basketball now a matters some when it didn’t before, but i’m not saying that would make his daughter less important

Jul.5 at 5:24 pm

Ryan Jones says:
Don’t sweat it, I just get touchy when I see stuff like that, because some people DO take it upon themselves to question a guy’s commitment in a situation like this, and generally speaking, I’d like to see those people question Derek to his face.

Ryan, do you really watch art-house films? If so, give me a list of recommendations. It sounds like an interesting way to prove one’s cultural supremacy, and I’m always down with that.
And Ryan, since you seem to be only a few rungs beneath me on the intellectual ladder (which is much better than most people), let me run this theory I’ve been cultivating lately for the betterment of mankind. My theory is that there are many parallels between U-God from Wu-Tang Clan and James Joyce, so many that it’s uncanny. Think about it: both can be undecipherable, delving deep into language. Here’s a sample from the two:
Joyce, from Finnegans Wake: “Psing a psalm of psexpeans, apocryphul of rhyme”
U-God, from Triumph (Wu-Tang Forever): “I sing a song from Sing-Sing, sippin on ginseng
Righteous wax chaperone, rotating ring king” Your thoughts Ryan?

i think the knicks will be ok and this case will only re focus isaiah and draw them more tightly together and this is coming from an non knocks fan yes i agree marbury is a bit weird when interviewed but with the proper big men (ie. zach thomas and the reinvented eddie curry) he is big business so i look for the knicks to be big this year despite the angry sack chaser plantiff lol

You know what you do with Somebody that is crazy and says that he is Napoleon? You find someone that thinks that he is the Duke of Wellington, and let them sort it out. This is the principal behind this Knicks roster, that’s why it might actually work out for a season. Artest might actually come to believe he is New York’s savior, or hero or even role model!

Yo Ryan.. I can’t help but get the same impression as RV. A guy that makes the money he does (Fish) should be able to provide healthcare for his kid ANYWHERE!!! I am not saying his priorities are out of order, but I also don’t think there is an order. More like: he is combining his priorities and therefore causing some of us to think that something is not right.

Jul.6 at 5:52 am

Charles Horton says:
Alan Houston? Keith Van Horn? Good guys (though I have my suspicions about hypocrisy), but lousy players. They were the achilles heels of the team when they played for the Knicks. I say, play hard both on and off the court. As an aside, I have a question for that front office (and backdoor) staffer who allegedly slept with Steph - after going to a strip club, did you think that he was going to buy you ice cream and walk you to your door, or what? Let’s pretend we’re all adults who are responsible for our choices, shall we?

Jul.6 at 7:31 am

Sam Rubenstein says:
UPDATE: it did not rain enough last night so we played softball in the sloppy mud. No transformers. Might try to see it tonight, but that is pushing it with an early flight tomorrow.

Thanks for the glowing compliment, Tariq. I saw Syriana last night and thought of you — because it’s an art house flick, sorta. Don’t take me the wrong way…
Re: Joyce & U-God, that’s not bad. However, I’ve long been partial to the Ghostface-as-Murakami comparison. You know they actually did a collabo back in ‘98?
