KG to Boston
‘Essentially Completed’
At least that’s what the Boston Herald is reporting on their website.
Sources this morning are confirming that the Celtics’ deal for Kevin Garnett is essentially completed.
One involved source said the final package will have the Celts sending Al Jefferson, Ryan Gomes, Gerald Green, Sebastian Telfair, Theo Ratliff and a No. 1 pick to Minnesota to acquire Garnett.
Can you say Eastern Conference Champs?

Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce in the same starting lineup? Really? Dude, I am SO jumping on this bandwagon!

As a Lakers fan, my first thought is F-CK! However, this is much better (for a Lakers fan)than Garnett going to Phoenix, Golden State, or Dallas.

Mutoni, you are on fire today. If that’s the deal, the Celts are giving up way too much. And I’m not sure if the Celtics this year overtake the Pistons, the Bulls or the Raptors. KG had Cassell and Spreewell and didn’t get the job done and at this point are this new big three that much better?

Can you say “mortgaging the team’s entire future?” I hope this prods the Nets into getting Jermaine O’Neal somehow. Also, with that many roster spaces opening up, does that mean there’s still hope for the Ray Allen/Allan Ray backcourt? I hope so.

Too much? C’s start Rondo-Allen-Pierce-KG-Perkins. They’ll have to sign about four new guys, starting with a backup PG (Brevin Knight, hello) but this deal bumps them up into top 3 in the East with Chicago and Cleveland.

Russ Bengtson says:
Doesn’t mean Allan Ray can’t come back. It’s not like other NBA teams were scrambling over each other to sign him the second the Celts cut him loose. And if they trade five-for-one, they’ll have to fill up the rest of the roster somehow. ATTENTION DANNY AINGE: I’ll sit on the end of the bench and not raise a fuss for the minimum. And I’m a white guy with reddish hair—Boston’ll love me. Think Bill Walton only shorter and less annoying.

It seems like a lot to give up but I wouldn’t call it mortgaging their future. With Allen and Pierce, Green and Gomes would have gotten less burn anyway. Al Jefferson is the future but I don’t think he’s going to be a good as STAT or anything like that. Maybe they sign another F/C and a backup PG and bring Allan Ray back.
Jul.30 at 2:26 pm
Starchild says:
Remember this is the East. 2 stars can get you to the Finals, 3 can get you a title, east or west. Garnett has always been a durable player so his age really isn’t a issue. If Rondo and Perkins can develop nicely this is a scary team.

Can these be the new east playoff teams? Celts, Bulls, Cavs, Pistons, Heat, Raptors, Magic & Knicks. Nets will not be there playing .500 ball, Bucks are not there yet either, Wiz and Bobcats can easily swap the Heat/Magic spots, Sixers…not so much and the Hawks…well their the Hawks.
Jul.30 at 2:44 pm
Ryan Jones says:
Props for even thinking of it, izzo.
Seriously though, if I were a Celtics fan I think I’d be psyched for this. F*ck “mortgaging their future,” when the hell has planning for the future done anything for the Celtics? The East sucks, and you’ve got three guys all-NBA caliber guys who are still close to their primes? Try to win right the f*ck now.
Jul.30 at 2:47 pm
Russ Bengtson says:
True. Not to mention one of their future guys will probably die soon. (Hey man, history repeats itself, right?) And NO WAY do the Knicks make the playoffs next year. Write it down.

I’m pumped for this, you could start two chimps with those three and cruise through the East.
Jul.30 at 2:52 pm

Ryan, isn’t that what the Heat did three years, then had two good playoff runs, won a title and now sit marred in criticism because they made said move? “F*ck the future” indeed. That would be a great tagline for a movie, though.

i think thats too much for KG, The celts don’t have even a decent C, thin at the PG spot, thin backing up SG, SF, and PF…they’re gonna need three 30 yr olds to play almost 48 mins every game and not get hurt, one injury might just end their season

Ryan Jones says:
eboy: YOU WON A F*CKING CHAMPIONSHIP. Ask fans of the Jazz, Suns, Sonics, Blazers, Nets, Mavs, Knicks, Magic, and any other team that’s gotten close in the past 20 years without anything to show for it if they’d trade their “futures” for having one single banner to hang from their rafters. As someone who follows the high school game pretty closely, I understand the infatuation with “future” success, but this whole idea of how horrible it is to “give away” a bunch of guys who *might* one day be good enough to compete for a title in exchange for a bunch of guys who are clearly good enough right now… I don’t get it. Never have. Sports fans have an absurd tendency to fixate on this sh*t, as if the potential of a bunch of 23-year-olds is somehow more certain than the proven excellence of a trio of 32-year-olds. I’d be crazy to say the Celtics will definitely make the Finals this year, but the idea that someone is MORE certain that Al Jefferson and Gerald Green are going to win the 2012 NBA title is 1,000 time insane.
I think.
Jul.30 at 3:29 pm
Ryan Jones says:
*times more insane.*

white hot eboy says:
Ryn, were you yelling to me that the Heat won a championship. I know they did. I’m extremely grateful that the referres allowed my son to have a mini-Heat championship banner hanging in his room due to their handiwork. And while I agree with your entire comment (which was way to long) I was just making the point that the rest of the SLAM posters have made since the Heat got their asses bounced from the playoffs this year. I like my big fake-ass Jostens replica championship ring, btw. They were moving like hotcakes down here after the championship parade.

Jul.30 at 3:51 pm
Ryan Jones says:
That was for everyone else, then.
Jul.30 at 3:52 pm
Steve O says:
Russ, your right KG doesn’t guarantee a title. But it certainly gives them the upper hand in the East. Say all 3 of them click really well they could steam roll into the Finals and play a Western Conf. team that just had two all out wars for playoff series. I like the C’s chances but I won’t crown them anytime soon either.
Jul.30 at 3:59 pm
white hot eboy says:
Didn’t the Lakers and 4 future Hall of Famers go into a season being annointed the greatest team ever and then got rocked in the Finals. This could be fairly similar. Except they don’t have a in-prime Kobe or a almost done Shaq. Not many teams get built in one offseason win a title the same year. The last one that did….the Heat. The Pistons, Lakers and Spurs of the 2000’s were all built over time. Let’s wait and see..

All they need now is Baron Davis and Shaquille O’Neal and the veteran team of the NBA will surely pull a onetimechampionship… And retire into a home for the elderly immediatly afterwards, instead of going to Disney World. By the way, are championshipteams still going to Disney Land/World after they won? I remember some vintage video were a Detroit “Bad Boy” Piston yelled it at the camera, might have been iThomas. I never got that, being a European… Can someone explain? Or write an article on it? Or help me google it… Just, anything, alright?

GOD DAMN!! Could you give up MORE? I understand Garnett is valuable, but someone remember the ‘04 Lakers? Dream Team Lakers? Yeah. Giving up your whole team to gather up some montruos association of stars ain’t getting oyu no where.
.
But i can see them tickets falling. Ah, i can.
Jul.30 at 4:21 pm
The Allrights says:
this trade doesn’t make the Celtics favorites in the East. this trade will make the Celtics the favorite pick of people who are from Boston, people who swing from KG’s nutsack, and people who don’t have any money on the pick. Wait and see how the handicappers treat this trade. KG and Ray Allen = SOFT. PP is a beast, true, but those three ain’t enough.
Jul.30 at 4:27 pm
Ryan Jones says:
The core of that ‘04 Lakers squad — Shaq, Kobe, Fisher, etc — already had three rings, and thus lacked the hunger of their up-and-coming opponents. Also, their two best players hated each other. The core of the ‘07-08 Celtics has won jack sh*t, and while they may not all be best friends, it’s hard to imagine them all hating each other anywhere near as much as Shaquille Rashaun and Kobe Bean. Hence, galo, the comparison is moot. But your participation is appreciated.

Max Airington says:
I actually think that theyd gel together. None of them are the classic alpha dog type and they all have shortcomings that are compensated by each other. Theyre all labeled as loveable losers and theyre playing in the weakest division in the lig, which should guarantee them a top three seed. They could all be 20ppg and all make the ASG. If they can solve that PG prob. Well see.
Jul.30 at 4:43 pm
white hot eboy says:
Max, Pierce should be the natural leader because of his tenure, right? Do they match up with the current Bulls team? Doubtful. I think if anyone gives them their biggest matchup problem in the East it Chicago. Followed closely by the Pistons. One year of playing together will be helpful to the new Celts but will another year of age slow them down even more?

Max Airington says:
The Bulls are defensively superior to Boston, but they couldnt score in a monkey whorehouse with a bag of bananas. The C’s should score but that D will be suspect. Its a toss up, but theyre still a top 3 team in the East and anything can happen in the playoffs. And the old blogger Russ is probably right.
Jul.30 at 5:19 pm
steve says:
I can’t believe some people are saying Boston is giving up too much. Boston is giving up one starter. One starter for Kevin Garnett! I can’t imagine any of those guys other than Jefferson will start for the Wolves. If it is possible to be a worse GM than Kevin McHale, I can’t think how.
And if that’s all it took to get Garnett, shouldn’t every GM in the league be kicking themselves now? Jefferson is decent, but he’s not the next coming of anything.

so if kobe DOES go to boston…do they move PP to 3 and bring rayray off the bench? the lakers better shift gears and get JO or #24 is going to run away…to NY.
btw. i am totally on the boston bandwagon.
what’s bill simmons saying about this?
Jul.30 at 5:32 pm
Allenp says:
Comparing the 04 Lakers to the new Celtics is asinine. Malone and Payton were past their prime, way past their prime, Shaq was tired and hated Kobe and the rest of the role players were lazy. Pierce, Ray Allen and Garnett are all hungry and motivated and they play in a weak conference. And last time I checked, that Lakers team made it to the Finals and were the favorites, so how bad of a deal was it?
Jul.30 at 5:32 pm
bong. says:
oh yeah. and a team in the east sporting rayray(though he’s coming off two ankle fixes), PP(somewhat in his prime), and a KG that may or may ont be declining…is still a guaranteed ECF winner, and depending on who comes out of the west, possible champ.
no matter how you cut it, ray is still the best gunner in the league, KG is still a top 5 player, especially with 2 high profile ball-demanders in the lineup, and PP is still PP.
no team in the league can guard an offense with so many different weapons…though i wouldn’t put it past GPOP.
btw, if the spurs meet the celts in the finals, i don’t care, i’m switching wagons.

albie1kenobi says:
how the hell did celtics go from tanking in hopes for the oden/durant sweepstake to landing two proven all-stars? how the f*ck did that happen? i thought the celtics had pierce and a buncha of undeveloped youngsters last year and is dead in the water. did ainge just drugged a whole bunch of people? this is annoyingly fascinating. i wonder if Stern made this happen to distract people from the Don-a-gie fiasco.

Kobe should demand an immediate “All-Star for free” trade exemption for the Lakers so the Celtics/Lakers rivalry can resume. Like, does Canada really NEED Chris Bosh? The NHL can give them back the Avalanche or something.

great trade for both teams, but i think minnesota may have done slightly better. they weren’t gonna win anything with KG anyway, now they got a whole heap of young talent, plus two future lottery picks. i say they throw next season, start their youngsters, and get themselves a lottery pick too.. celtics won’t win a championship. they’re bench will suck, and one injury and they’re screwed.

Celtics fan in Miami!!! says:
It sound like there are some haters, or non-Celtics fans in here…The C’s will do just fine. The idea that they gave up too much is just plain silly. Those guys weren’t doing anything for the Celtics anyways, so why keep them. The sure did help lead them to the 2nd worse record in the league! I am sure that they will have Miami’s number. Wade is good, but makes to many errand mistakes. And when did the Bulls become relevant? Is it because they beat a sorry Heat team in the playoffs? There only real test is Detroit. Matchup wise we should be asking who will guard these 3 guys? Most teams only have two stars, if even that! Don’t hate, congratulate!
