Grant Hill is a Phoenix Sun

Thus ends the Tracy and Grant “era” in Orlando

By Sam Rubenstein

It started out as a rumor, but has become truth. Grant Hill is going to the Phoenix Suns. Phoenix gets the “I’m just trying to win a championship” discount. A no-lose situation, as he stands to make 1.8 mill with a player option for pretty much the same thing in year two. Not quite 7 years for $93 million, which was how much Orlando paid.

So, what do you all think? He’s obviously not in the same galaxy as the player that inspired the cover you see to the left. But hey, an affordable albeit injury plagued Grant Hill is better than nothing.

As always, feel free to share your opinion.

Good signing for the Suns. When healthy Hill has been productive and is a great role player. He should strive playing in the Suns system. But what happens to the playing time for Diaw who already saw his time decrease last year when Amare can back?

should have went to the spurs

Worst SLAM cover ever (OK, except for the Gary Payton one). It got retouched so badly that he looked like a corpse. Which, given what transpired with the Magic, can actually be considered foreshadowing. I’m still proud of the line, though. (And who cares about Boris Diaw’s playing time? Seriously?)

im definitely not worried about boris diaw……………………………………………………………………………………….i remember in some slam, you had a lil piece on boris and sjack was teaching anglish, priceless.

The Spin says:
I think this is a true bargain for the Suns. WHy not, right? As for Hill, he is going to a contender, but as for fitting in and being comfortable, this team isn’t ideal. He would have been smart to go back to the Pistons, where the slow paced offense would be less demanding on his tender ankles. Check me thoughts on this at www.clutch3.com

he shouldve signed w the magic to make up for killing their cap all those years..they could use the veteran leadership..

Jul.5 at 3:39 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
I think Grant’ll be just fine in Phoenix. He’s not going to be asked to play 40 minutes a night, and he’ll rarely (if ever) be the first scoring option. He’s just a smart player who makes the right decisions who’ll make everything work a little more smoothly.

Russ Bengtson says:
And Mike Miller would like to know, what about HIS era?

Jul.5 at 3:56 pm

Adam says:
Grant Hill is a great addition to a phoenix team looking to add more than just firepower these days. I can’t decide if he’s better off starting or playing as a 6th man - he’ll add balance to the starting line-up but I see him as a jerry stackhouse-type guy off the bench as well

Jul.5 at 3:59 pm

Greased Up Deaf Guy aka Clay Davis says:
mike miller needs to be concerned with how to look less like a wnba player

Young Chris #3 says:
Grant Hill would have been one of the greatest of all time…

Jul.5 at 4:17 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
Grant Hill was just like Ken Griffey Jr., only more injured.

Jul.5 at 4:26 pm

Sam Rubenstein says:
Yeah, Mike Miller could be a part of that too. Orlando is the NBA version of the Expos, only they throw ridiculous amounts of money at free agents once a decade. Dwight Howard is going to be amazing wherever he goes next.

I’m glad for Phoenix and GHill. And I hope they win too.

The Suns should care about Diaw’s playing time considering they signed him to that fat contract extension last year.

Just like Mike. Except always injured.

is penny hardaway coming back?

Jul.5 at 6:26 pm

Mike C. says:
Diaw shouldn’t be concerned at all about his playing time. Jalen Rose is the one that should be concerned.

Jul.5 at 6:29 pm

Mike C. says:
GHill will probably play spot minutes, be the calming influence for the off-the-bench guys, and maybe tell stories in the locker room about how he was once a big time star who had a blazingly bright future ahead of him, and how it all went in the crapper so quickly (over 7 years). Maybe that will get Marion to stop whining about not being the #1 guy on the team, shut the eff up and just try to win a ring. Rings aren’t guaranteed.

Mike C. says:
They are, however, “guaran-sheed”.

Does Grant Hill’s ankle set off airport detectors whenever he travels?

Hey guys, remember like a week ago, when i said the Raptors where going to sign Grant Hill? Scratch that. I heard hes going to PHX.

Boing Dynasty says:
Also i had forgotten about Mike Miller’s oral herpes. Yuck.

Jul.5 at 7:29 pm

Young Chris #3 says:
Russ hit the nail on the head with the Ken Griffey Jr. comparison. And does Boing Dynasty even read the articles (or at least the titles of the articles) he posts comments on?

Jul.5 at 9:08 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
What does Jalen Rose have to be concerned about? It’s not like he got any minutes last year anyway.

Jul.5 at 11:51 pm

Serge says:
I think he shouldnt go to phx, i mean do the suns need him? they dont look like they do, Hill shouldve gone to a team in need of a star player, not an alredy great team, he shouldve gone to charlotte or something.

Jul.6 at 12:56 am

Holiday says:
Hill was a star player but now he’s just a better than average role player, he should fit well coming off the bench! He’s simply not the athlete he used to be, but he can still be productive!

Jul.6 at 10:43 am

Sparker says:
jalen rose is over the hill and into the next town… and why is no one trying to sign stack? he’s the only one on the mavs who showed any backbone against g-state. i can’t stand dallas, but he’s a man among boys.

Boing Dynasty says:
Apparently Young Chris #3 is infact so young, that he has yet to fully grasp the concept on sarcasim.

Jul.6 at 2:21 pm

Dblizzy! says:
Young Chris, I think that was Boings attempt at sarcasm. I guess it’s a good signing for PHX. They still won’t be able to get past the Spurs though. I don’t know why he wouldn’t just jump on the bandwagon and sign with San Antonio.

Jul.6 at 2:38 pm

Boing Dynasty says:
How perceptive.

[…] -Think people in Orlando are mad at G-Hill for bolting town? At least one assh*le columnist is: Goodbye, Grant. Good luck. And now, sadly, there’s a little piece of all of us that says good riddance. Hope you enjoy that $93 million. Hope you and Steve Nash hit it off and become best buddies. Hope you get your ring. Godspeed to you, Grant Hill. Break a leg. […]

Jul.9 at 1:05 pm

Co Co says:
Russ, I love you but Grant is not even near Ken Griffey Jr. Despite spending an enormous amount of his career on the DL, he’s still going to end up with over 600 home runs. He’s in a class damn near all by himself!

Jul.9 at 1:41 pm

mamadou n'diaye says:
Did Jalen Rose sign for the min in phoenix in order to contribute to a championship team? How did that work out for him? Nice pickups in Tucker, Strawberry, and Hill for a team whose systems needs outside shooters to be effective.

Jul.9 at 2:00 pm

DP says:
Grant Hill is just too injury plagued to get anything done for the Suns. Sure he will provide some scoring for the Suns, but how long will he really last? I wish Grant didn’t have all these injuries because it would have been real nice to see him and T-mac still together. But I guess Nash makes everbody better. right? play wit it.

Jul.9 at 2:12 pm

Silky Slim says:
Grant Hill (at this stage of his career) and Boris Diaw are basically the same type of player. The Suns signed Jalen Rose last year and he got no burn. Signing Jalen was a bad move, but Grant is definitely a good addition to the Suns roster.

Jul.9 at 3:50 pm

Ryu says:
It’s going to be exciting to guess every night, who’s gonna get less playing time, Grant or Jalen.

Jul.9 at 5:04 pm

Slobodan Chutzpah says:
Remember what happened to Jalen Rose? Grant Hill, meet pine.

Jul.9 at 6:44 pm

The Spin says:
I saw someone mention Jalen Rose above. I don’t think this will be the same, as GH still has some juice left in the tank. He deffinitely will burn out if he starts (which we won’t). He is the intelligent player they need to come into the game ( similar to McDyess for the Pistons). I wrote up on GH too. Check it out at www.clutch3.com

Man, I can totally see Diaw out of the league in 3 years.

Grant on the suns, i like it. thats a great signing for any team.

niQ says:
i dont think i ever saw jalen rose play a game as a sun.. and.. grant hill can still be productive.. didnt he avreage like. .14pts last season?.. even while always being injured?..

Jul.10 at 1:35 am

LJ BBall Fan says:
At least GHill gets to put on a better looking uniform than that awful photo above. That should be worth it to him, alone. Hill got through last season relatively healthy playing 65 games, playing 31 mpg and scoring 14 ppg - not bad for an injured vet.

Jul.10 at 2:39 am

Joel O's says:
Jalen hasn’t been good for a whiiile now. Anyone who saw him play in Toronto knows that he was already a shadow of the player he was during those great years with Indy. So for him, not contributing on the Suns isn’t too much of a surprise to me. Grant Hill was my one of my favourite players in secondary school, I wore his Fila bball shoes all the time, which were really hot shoes. All that said, Hill has to prosper with the Suns. I really really hope he helps them to win a championship.

Jul.10 at 3:37 am

Russ Bengtson says:
Co Co: Yeah, that was an exagerration. Grant would have to average 25/9/8 over the next three seasons or so to even approach Griffey status. Although that moose might be a liability.

Jul.10 at 4:22 pm

eyehatedirk says:
I see Grant Hill spelling Marion and Diaw, Kurt Thomas doing the dirty work, Barbosa shredding the scoreboard, and the rookies contributing a bunch later on in the season for the Suns. The only problem: where’s the backup point man? They should have kept Sergio instead of selling him to the Blazers, or better yet, kept Rajon Rondo last year.

Jul.12 at 3:27 pm

Mark Shehady says:
The Suns don’t need Grant Hill. They already have Amar’e Stoudimire,Steve Nash,Raja Bell,Leanardo Barbosa and Shawn Marion.
