Kevin Garnett: about to be a Celtic?
-Oh boy, here we go again: The KG-to-Beantown rumors are surfacing again. They started on RealGM and CelticsBlog last night, and now ESPN’s Marc Stein (among others) has also picked up the scent:
Former teammates Kevin McHale and Danny Ainge have revived discussions of a deal that would end Garnett’s 12-season association with Minnesota by sending him to Ainge’s Celtics, with the Wolves getting back two of the assets McHale coveted most last month: Al Jefferson and Theo Ratliff’s expiring contract.
The deal depends on Garnett backing off his well-chronicled unwillingness to play in Boston. Yet sources indicated late Sunday that Garnett was warming to the idea, raising hopes on both sides that the deal will finally go through.
(If you’re Boston, and you can land Kevin Garnett by only giving up the talented Al Jefferson and Theo Ratliff’s rotting corpse, is there any way you don’t pull the trigger on this deal? Of course, we’re dealing with Danny Ainge here, so you never know…)
-Speaking of Boston: Goodbye, Allan Ray. With Jesus Shuttlesworth now part of the team, your name became a little too confusing. We hope you understand.
-Shaun Livingston almost had a part of his leg amputated following that horrific knee injury he suffered back in February.
Inside the hospital, his knee was scanned for nerve and artery damage. He and [longtime friend Art Jones] still can’t shake the memory of what the doctors said: Part of his left leg might have to be amputated. He tried to fathom it.
Minutes before he’d been playing an NBA game. Now he had to think about having part of his leg cut off. “It was pretty devastating,” Livingston said.
-Should the NBA get rid of fouling out? I don’t think Shaq would be too happy about this.

Hack a Shaq, if you can’t foul out why let Shaq do anything but shoot free-throws all game. I believe that’s what he meant.

Ryan Jones says:
From that “no more fouling out story”:
“Basketball is the only team sport I know of where a player can be ejected for a single rule infraction - often a debatable call.”
Since Pete Newell was born in America shortly before the pilgrims arrived, I guess I wouldn’t expect him to be a soccer fan. But, um, yeah, it’s the biggest sport in the world, and it’s MUCH easier to get tossed for a “single… debatable call” in soccer than it is in hoops. Great idea otherwise, though.

Most of the players in the league are not nearly as hood as they want us to believe they are so you can forget about the “goon” aspect. It wouldn’t come to that.

Yeah, unlimited fouling would be great. Every time Nash, Lebron, Kobe, Agent Zero, D-Wade or any other superstar player touched the ball, just have the defended wrap him up. 10 guys of the bench, 60 more fouls to use in a game. Great, great idea! Let’s find a way to make the game worse than it is now.

jbn74sb says:
The guys who can actually do their jobs (anyone who shoots more than 80% from the FT line) wouldn’t get intentionally fouled. Those who are terrible at a major aspect of their jobs (Shaq) would get hacked every time.

White hot it would do no good to wrap up great free thrown shooters like Kobe or Nash, but I’d definitely put Lebron’s a** on the line nonstop!

Bodie, your comments about Shaq today and last week are fun to read because a single person dislike is always intriguing. Kind of like Co Co’s hate for D-Wade. Go ahead, give him more free throws, he needs to make up for lost time from this past year.
Jul.30 at 1:14 pm
Co Co says:
Why do you think I hate D Wade White Hot? I don’t, but it’s easy to make fun of him sometime. Plus, it pisses off ALL the Heat fans on here! Aren’t we all entitled to a little fun??
Jul.30 at 1:21 pm
white hot eboy says:
Co Co, are you being truthful? A few weeks ago you expressed a tremendous dislike for him because of his falling down after contact, benefit of the doubt calls that made him a champion, etc. And all of what Heat fans are there here? The only one’s I ever see are me and Cheryl, with a occasional stragler now and again. And if there are other “true” fans on here, they rarely get into discussions when the state of the team comes up. I feel like I’m on a internet island (not Brian Grant’s, either) with Cheryl and we’re throwing coconuts at a shipload of Heat “haters”!

Can I just add to the debate going on here - I am a DWade and Shaq hater and pround of it. I also hate the Heat in general, the phoney foul calls in the finals against the Mavs were the biggest travesty I’ve ever seen in 14 years of watching the NBA. Hater and proud.

I like the no foul out idea. If you read the article, he said on the sixth foul the other team gets two shots and possesion. If they make it so the team can choose who shoots the two shots, that will eliminate abuse of that rule. think about it, star players rarely foul out of games, but how many times has your favorite player gotten 2 fouls in the first 5 minutes and had to sit out while his team loses. I think it’s a great idea. If you really think about it…

White hot eboy - I don’t so much as hate Shaq as much I see him for what he is, as compared to what he could have been. He used to be my favorite player. He came in to the NBA around the time college started for me, and when the Lakers signed him, I could not have been more stoked. And I don’t think anyone with an IQ north of 70 would suggest that Shaq is a decent FT shooter, let alone a good one. Thus, he is horrible at a major part of his job, and the non-fouling out rule would send his ass to the bench. Which wouldn’t be a huge change, seeing as how he averaged about 25 minutes per game last year.

Jul.30 at 6:14 pm
white hot eboy says:
jbn74sb, I appreciate the fact that you have a very solid opinion on the Diesel more than “he’s a fat ass” and the like that most people who are his critics use. But to suggest that the fact he can’t shoot free-throws well is an indication of his lack of compassion for the game and should be punished because of it is a truly silly statement. Would you say because Steve Nash can’t dunk a ball in traffic, in a game or at any other time in his NBA career or the fact he plays NO defense at all, that he should be reprimanded and placed on the bench because of it. If Deron Williams or Baron Davis score 30 points on him should he be benched for lack of defensive intensity. Defense is a basic basketball fundemental and there are plenty of guys who can’t defend (Lebron, Gilbert, Carmelo) so should they all be penalized as well. It’s an interesting argument that could go on for hours. So let’s just be happy to disagree.
Jul.30 at 6:20 pm
H to the izzo says:
Eboy,I think most of the guys in your list that you say can’t defend just don’t feel like defending
Jul.30 at 6:39 pm
jbn74sb says:
eBoy - For the record, I am not a supporter of the unlimited fouls rule. And don’t even get me started on Steve Nash. I saw Quentin Ross drop 20 on him during the Clippers-Suns playoff series 2 years ago. Just do me the favor of keeping an open mind about Shaq the basketball player. I really believe that he and his contract will be an albatross around the neck of the Heat franchise for the next 3 years (is that how much he has left on his deal?).
Jul.30 at 7:21 pm
white hot eboy says:
jbn74sb, Yeah, three years is what’s left. And for the record, the thing about Shaq that won me over was watching him, more than any other player I’ve watched in my 30 + years, take more physical abuse than any other player ever and only take one shot at someone for the way they played him (Brad Miller). That to me show’s he has more class than 99.9% of the players who have come through the league. Don’t get me wrong, I know there’s plenty of guys that have been on the wrong end of a Shaq elbow or sholder blast, but when you play body to body with a 320, 330 lb man, you’re bound to get crushed. That just facts. And if him, Wade and Riley put together one more title run in that period, I think it would be safe to say that his contract albatross would be extinct.

However, there is more to it than that for me, such as: His help and pick-and-roll defense, his pedestrian rebounding, his meager blocked shots, and his atrocious free throw shooting. And don’t even get me started on his conditioning, work ethic, and half-assed effort…

joe_x says:
@albie1kenobi, a hockey player can be ejected for 1) attempting to injure (like swinging a stick), 2) a check from behind (which is a 5 minute penalty and getting tossed from the game), 3) instigating a fight, or 4) if he commits 5 minor penalties (like slashing) in the same game. This last rule is rather obscure and never really applies. So, yes, in hockey, you can get thrown out of the game for a single rule infraction. The dude who wrote the article didn’t do his research.

jbn74sb, and just imagine if he did all those things better? Instead of 6 Finals appearnces and 4 rings, it could be 10 Finals and 6 or 7 rings. And if that crying girl that can’t decide on a number didn’t crave the spotlight so much, that could have been the reality. And all the things you mentioned that Shaq doesn’t do well, 24 does, and where has that gotten him since the Big Paycheck left LA?
