The cycle continues

And the new feature on google maps freaks me out. In a good way.

By Sam Rubenstein

Well, the Finals preview should be ready sometime today, and it looks like I’m about to have one of those “behind the scenes” days trying to get other secretive stuff together, and oh by the way I am also training our summer intern. That’s right, the circle is complete. Three years ago it was I who spent many hours three days a week copying and pasting text from the magazine to word documents and re-sizing photos. Now we have someone new to undertake that task. For the sake of tradition, we’ll have him introduce himself much like Lang allowed me to introduce myself on The Links. For now, his identity remains a secret, cause that’s how you build up a buzz.

He isn’t alone though. There could be more like him on their way. Isn’t that mysterious? In today’s age of all access information to anyone who seeks it out, I like to keep secrets just to be difficult.

In even bigger internet news - if possible - have you checked out the latest feature from google maps? Street View! It only works in 4 or 5 cities so far, and I suppose it’s just the next step for what google earth has already been doing, but this is bananas. Hey look, it’s the 40/40 club! Where’s LeBron? You might have to click on the little yellow guy to see it. This could be a very bad time waster on a busy day.

So yeah… The NBA Finals! LEBRON! Other Cavs! Spurs!

Sam, will you be addressing what appears to be a new format for the slamonline.com columnists lineup? Because I’m curious as a mother.

When a post is written, it goes to the top. Too complicated for you?

I didn’t need an explanation, psycho, just an acknowledgment of the change. I live in a cow pasture. This is big for me.

I have an offtopic suggestion. Every time someone posts first and the post itself contains the word FIRST - or variations thereof -, the post date is automatically shifted two days forward. That way, the culprit post will always appear last, and therefore even more lame. Heck, I’ll even write the wordpress plugin for you if you go along with it.

That Google Street View is awesome. I wonder why everyone’s so up-in-arms about privacy, etc. Who cares if you can see your cat in the window?

I liked it the way it was before when it was broken down by each writer/section… Certain writers/sections I just don’t care for…

The website is a work in progress, with more changes to come. Be patient and keep reading. Love the idea of Sam getting some interns. Full circle, indeed.

Jun.6 at 11:06 am

Ben Osborne says:
One other thing, Rasheedionics: whenever you’re on a column you can always look on the left side and see the archives of every writer/section you want to read…and then you can skip the ones you don’t (but why would you do such a thing?).

Rasheedionics says:
Ben, to read every single article and all of its comments is a part time job in itself. Not everyone have that kind of time… There are certain columns that I read religiously such as Links and anything by Sam and Khalid. It’s nothing against other guys, but it’s just a time issue with me and i’m sure anyone else who have a full time job and a newborn baby to deal with… So when I sign on to Slamonline, I want to be able to jump straight to my “favorites”… I understand that site’s goal is to give each columnist as much exposure as possible, but I don’t think there’s anything wrong with readers having their favorite writers. I’m sure you guys understand.

But every time Sam or Khalid writes something new it will be visible. And Lang’s Links will stay updated on the left side of the home page, so I still don’t totally get the confusion.

Much of the credit for the latest new look to the site goes to Johnathan Andersen, whose name you see at the very bottom of this page. He’s a huge LOST fan, so you know he’s smart.
That google street view thing is a lot of fun. I was hoping they would have it up for San Antonio or Cleveland to make it Finals related, but no luck there.

Jun.6 at 12:28 pm

Rasheedionics says:
Ben, there’s no confusion. With current setup you only get the last 8 articles posted. So if I miss a day, I guess I’d have to go through archive of each writer to make sure I didn’t miss something interesting. I just really liked the previous “tabs” or whatever it’s called set up. To me, this is somewhat of a step back. But that’s just my 2 cents on it. Either way, I’ll be checking the site. No matter how you arrange it, you guys still have the best basketball content on the web. And SAM, if you watch both LOST and HEROES, does that make you a genius?

Tariq says:
Sam, does the new intern represent Dipset to the fullest by any chance?

Jun.6 at 4:32 pm

Sam Rubenstein says:
Rasheedionics, I believe it does.
Tariq, he can address that if he so chooses to when he speaks.
