Draft begins
That was quick.
No rest. A season ends, a season beings. Welcome to draft season. Ben Collins has been our college expert over the past year, and since college basketball actually has something to do with the NBA draft for a change, he’s all over it. He even promised a mock draft in his latest post. It’s in the comment section, and as we all know, comments on the internet are legally binding.
This year’s build-up is already more fun than last year’s. Andrea Bargnani had a really nice rookie year, but he wasn’t a franchise alterer like… hmm, it’s kind of funny to point this out now but if you look at the list of first overall picks who were no brainer #1s that have changed what the team that drafted them is forever, the last two to do so are LeBron and Tim Duncan. They just played each other in the Finals!
Then again, there are so many rumors out there about the Blazers taking their time to make a decision, and how they are weighing their options, the whole Sam Bowie history thing, and so on. The last loaded draft was the LeBron draft, and the Cavs announced they were taking LeBron before the lottery ball dropped. This year, it’s not as clear, and that’s just the top two. The rumor mill is spinning out of control as always. It’s the time of year when basketball becomes the male equivalent of celebrity gossip. Moreso than usual.
This would be one of those set-up posts where I tell you that more in-depth posts are coming. There are no NBA games being played. Unless kb24.com magically updates itself again, you’ll have to read about things like a person whom I shall not name expressing interest in the Sacramento Kings job. Yeah, let’s stick with draftology.
Alright, time to dive into 200 different mock draft scenarios.

I say the blazers take Oden and make a monster of a post presence. Oden will block and change shots in this league, i cannot say that Durrant will be able to attack the rim with all of the huge centres like Dampier, Okafor etc laying in wait. Sure he can shoot but on the perimeter he will realise he is only equal with the better guards in the league and not the college standout. Don’t get me wrong Durrant can play and he will be a star but Oden will get ROY unless he gets injured or somethin. Lets see the Blazers ball that Gangsta ballin issue on Zach randolph is somthin everybody should read cos that guy will get crazy numbers next season maybe most improved.Get Oden and start winning!!!!!!!

GREG ODEN ISN’T SAM BOWIE, HE’S AKEEM OLAJUWON. If I read Sam Bowie’s name ONE MORE TIME in connection with this Draft, I’m gonna snap. I’m gonna be Superfly TNT—the guns of the Navarone. STOP IT.

Ryan Jones says:
I think Oden’ll probably be somewhere in between, though closer to Dream (22 ppg, 11 rpg, 3 bpg career) than Sam (11, 8 & 2). I will be SHOCKED if Greg averages 22 & 12 out the gate like Dream did as a rookie, and I doubt he’ll ever average 28 ppg like Dream did in 94-95. I have a feeling Greg is gonna be foul-prone early on, and he’s nowhere near having Dream’s range on that J, which will limit him offensively. All that said, he will not suck. At all.

I was checking a mock draft at SI.com, and if I’m not going crazy, the Blazers have 1 first round pick and 4 second round picks?!? That’s damn near half a roster. Some of the 2nd rounders likely won’t get signed, but man. I see trades on the horizon.

WARNING-Late Kobe talk!
I think teams with no forseable future should trade superstars at th end of their prime early, to cut the losses. The Lakers can’t build around Kobe, but they can trade him to a team a year or two away, or maybe a loaded team that needs something to get over the hump for about 75% of his value (mostly in cap spave, draft picks and young guys that need PT to shine. In a couple of years, they will only get 30-40%, since nobody would want to give up to much for 2-4 years of quality ball, Kobe will start falling apart before thay can recover from the trade and be in contention. KG is probably in the latter category already.

Regarding the draft, I’ve been saying this since we got picks 3 and 11…I hope the Hawks can swing a deal to trade the 3rd pick and a player or two so we can acquire an all star level point guard or center. Knowing full well who are GM is, I don’t think this will happen…but it’s definitely the direction I’d like to see us go towards. Conley at #3 is too high. I don’t think he’s a Deron Williams or Chris Paul. He’s closer to a Raymond Felton in my eyes. Conley at 5 or 6 is right; #3, not so much. Acie Law or Spencer Hawes at #11 sounds good to me. This is your last chance to do right, Billy Knight. Make the most of it. I know a lot of guys hate on him, but I’m going to give him the (slim) benefit of the doubt and hope that he can do the right thing.

They all stayed longer in college as i know. So if he is not averaging 18 & 12 out of the gate, give him 2 years in the league before start hatin.
Jun.19 at 3:41 pm
Russ Bengtson says:
Greg Oden will not be in the 2008 NBA Draft. Oh, and Myung? Just out of curiosity, what “all-star level point guard” do you think the Hawks will be able to make a deal for? How about Marv, the 11 and someone expensive for Stephon Marbury?

Myung says:
To be perfectly honest, I haven’t done my homework, Russ. I know salaries and such have to match so take my words with a grain of salt. I’d be OK with pretty much any decent PG (over 6′3″ please) who’s been in the League for at least 2 years and who is capable of leading a young team. Our 5-headed PG machine proved to be a bust (um, big surprise there). Speedy can strip the ball and nothing else. Tyronn Lue is a clutch shooter and little else. Royal Ivey is good for defense and nothing else (I can’t say anything REALLY bad about him or my Longhorn alum of a girlfriend might kill me if she reads this). Salim Stoudamire and Anthony Johnson…you get the picture. Maybe it’s just wishful thinking, but I’d love to see a Chauncey or an Andre Miller type on the Hawks next season (if that’s even possible). It’ll probably never happen, but a fan can wish, right?
Jun.19 at 4:05 pm
Myung says:
Oh…and no thanks on Steph, Russ. =) The Knicks can keep him (though Lang just might like that move). I got an invite via the Hawks e-mail list to go to the Draft Party in two weeks. The last time we had the 3rd pick, I went down to Philips Arena to join the rest of the (few) fans. We took Gasol and traded him for Shareef. We also had a late 1st round pick, drafted Tinsley because we needed a PG (hasn’t this been a common theme for our franchise ever since we got rid of Mookie?), and then immediately traded him to the Pacers. We also passed on this French PG who turned out to be pretty good. I jinxed our team so bad in 2001 that I think I might have to skip this year’s Draft Party. I’d hate for what happened in 2001 (pretty much every year since) to happen again in 2007.

A ten-year old wouldn’t remember Shaq from the Blue Chips days. Or Stromile Swift getting 13 blocks in a game in college. Oden doesn’t have a jump shot (yet?), he also just kind of floats through parts of games, not really being aggressive. KG never floated through a game, even when the rest of his team was trying to lose. Duncan wasn’t programmed to float. The Dream was too cool to float.

As a random thought, I hate article titles like the one from yesterday (”Rising Son”). As an Asian basketball fan, I find it somewhat patronizing that people still use antiquated phrases like that for article headlines. Why not “Enter The Dragon” or “Insertlastname Dynasty” or “Kung Fu Master” while we’re at it? It was an excellent write-up, but it’s 2007 and I think people here in the States, no matter what their ethnicity may be, are beyond the 1970’s stereotypes of Asians, be it in Hollywood or in sports.

Jun.19 at 8:00 pm
PJHart says:
To clarify my last point, I was referring to the question posited as to why Oden doesn’t have the same numbers. Shaq succeeds without a jumpshot because he has a) a jump hook, and b) the body of a dump truck. While Oden is not small, he’s not going to be running over people and flushing on cities of people the way Shaq did in his prime. What Oden’s skill set is now is not what it will be when he becomes a premier big man. He will need a jump hook (which exists for him, but is not yet perfected) and at least a mid-range J. Would that have come with more time in college? Yes. Will it come faster for him in the L? Definitely. This is because instead of being the cornerstone of his team, he will be able to concentrate on what is already great about his game (boards and D) during the games while letting whichever offense he is working with do their thing, and work on what he needs (polished offense) in practice. Two years, max, Oden will be making a difference, hopefully taking one of those teams to the playoffs.

The Truth says:
BBaller - No!
Timmy Duncan better than Oden - yes
Parker better than Conley - yes
Bowen shut down scorer - yes
Ginobli who would stop him And to top it of its not NBA Live, teams dont trade silly styles, to make another team dominant, but give Oden, Jack, Roy, Aldridge time and say 3 -4 years they will be legit threats year after year to win, suprisinlgy about the time Timmy starts to fade….

i’m not sure if floating explains why he didn’t put up bigger numbers, it wouldn’t be good if he floated around in games…Shaq has done well for himself using the other 3 people he ate as a kid, he’s mainly power and strength, oden doesn’t have that ability and i doubt he’ll ever will, but he can get 20 per on put backs, hooks, and a few post moves
Jun.19 at 11:59 pm
sixthman6 says:
also, when Oden posts up he usually steps over his defenders leg and turns toward the hoop clearing his man and getting inside position…he doesn’t do it very smoothly against college centers and bounces off of them, i don’t see him doing that any easier in the NBA unless he adds some serious weight

yes, i do, but that would affect his shots and even catching the ball, blocking shots, but i’m refering to him not being a power player like shaq, and i don’t believe he was even with two good hands…also that play i described isn’t affected by a bad hand or using a weak hand
Jun.20 at 12:54 am
Chukaz says:
I wonder if Kobe will leave the Lakers. I hope he doesn’t and I hope that KG will join him in L.A. The Boston Celtics are interested in getting KG in Boston in exchange for 4 players and the 5th pick of the draft. I hope that the Timberwolves don’t take that deal. It would be good for them to take that deal ’cause I’m sure they would be getting Al Jefferson, Gerald Green, maybe Delonte West, and some large expiring contract (is Theo Ratlif still a Celtic?). I hope that Jerry Buss comes down to earth and trades Bynum and Odom in exchange for KG. Bynum is not that good! He is not the next Shaq or the next great center. If he is lucky he will average a double-double for his carrer (he probably won’t). The fat kid is not athletic, strong, quick, and lacks skills. The kid has been working with kareem Abdul-Jabbar like a year and he still doesn’t have a go-to move.
Jun.20 at 1:00 am
Chukaz says:
@sixthman - so what if Odom is not a power player? Dream wasn’t much of a power player either. He just made his moves and got around his defenders (something that Bynum can’t do, TRADE HIM!). Dream could dunk on people, but he wan’t like Shaq and he is probably the best low-post scorer in the history of the L. Kareem was good, but Dream had so many moves he could hit you with while ‘Reem just had his damn Sky-hook (try telling me with a straight face that that’s even close to being as good as Hakeems’ Dream Shake)
Jun.20 at 1:08 am
Chukaz says:
Back to Bynum, he’s not good! He is not a freak of nature like D. Howard is, or at least athleticly gifted like Kwame. He is not as big as Shaq and he is slower than Shaq. Shaq might be like 320 lbs. but at least he is only like 15% body fat. Bynum might be lighter than that but he is like 69% body fat. You would imagine that he would lose some weight or build up some muscle in two years, but he wasn’t. Trade him while you can. Who cares if you screw the other team? Just get rid of him for at least a decent player like Chris Kaman (the Clips wouldn’t trade him), try to get a player like Camby, or even package him with another guy and get Gasol. Make the most of this overrated player and get Garnett, for the love of god! Dr. Buss, can’t you see that Kobe’s walkin’ away if you don’t do something your season ticket holders will not hold those tickets anymore. If not for the fans or the team, do it for the money.

bigmike407 says:
If you trade Bynum, who will you get? Who will actually trade a player to receive a guy who rolls around with SLAM journalists and eats at Quizno’s? What NBA player even eats fast food? This shows that he needs to learn about the NBA game off the court and how to take care of his body. Oden is number 1, Durant is 2, and it’s pretty wide open after that. Didn’t know the Asian dude was that old, either? Is he a modern-day Sabonis? As much as people are complaining, this draft is kinda decent. There are a few big guys who can probably be ready in 3-5 years. However, Spencer Hawes should go back to school. There are a few tweeners who may be big 3’s in the future. However, Josh McRoberts should go back to school. There are some solid point guards in the draft. However, I don’t know how ready JamesOn Curry is. It’s a draft where the GM’s, scouts, and player personnel guys will earn their pay. There are no great players (as far as immediate impact), but a few who will contribute and improve with time. Some will be all stars like Oden, Horford, Durant, and Law. Others like Noah, Conley, Nick Young, and Julian Wright will be solid contributors for a few years. But all of them will have to work very, very hard to be a force in the league. Is Rodney Carney coming out? Haven’t heard or seen his name in any draft talks.

Chukaz, Minnesota won’t let KG go, especially for those two stiffs. You could probably trade Odom and Brown for O’Neal & Troy Murphy, though. With the 3-team trade, who goes where? Got kind of confused there. Not knocking your train of thought, but trades have to be approved before you can ship somebody you just traded for out again. LA should try to trade Smush Parker and a pick for Drew Gooden. The Cavs get a point in case Gibson loses his momentum from the playoffs, and LA gets a rebounder and (sometime) offensive threat from the post. Better yet, Badmanovich (who breaks their wrist with their hands in their pockets?) and a pick to the Suns for Kurt Thomas. Or to the Bulls for P.J. Brown. Those guys may be old, but they play the game properly, only need a few touches, and can school a young dude like Bynum and get his mind right.

Tell Dr. Buss to make the following trade happen and Kobe will stick around for a while.
Tim Duncan to the Lakers for Lamar Odom and Kwame Bronw. It works. Check it out at www.realgm.com

Chukaz: Haha, great irony. And Kobe should stay, just to keep the lakers sucky for as long time as possible.

you can’t go wrong with either Greg Oden or Kevin Durant. Oden is a big guy who can block shots and work in the post. Durant is a player that can do pretty much any thing. He can score, block shots, and shoot from long range.I think the blazers can be pretty good with either of those guys

chukaz, i never mentioned Odom when talking about power players…i’m guessing u meant Oden??? And Dream was unique, his soccer skills, much like steve nash’s, gave him great footwork, balance, and vision, that was Dream’s foundation, without it he wouldnt have been as good, oden doesn’t have that to work with.

OK. Now I know WHY Chukaz had his own post dedicated to him earlier by Farmer Jones. Damn. Dude really must be on crack, or he had too much coffee before visiting this post. Maybe had caffeine injected into his veins? Reading his comments, I find his thought-process incredible. It’s like, he thinks faster than a Nascar racer drives. What’s even more incredible is that nothing he says makes any sense on a real intellectual level. Never before have I felt like my status was so high. Thanks. You made my day, bro.

I say we trade Chukaz to ESPN.com for a bag of peanuts and maybe a case of Coronas (Hey, there are Danny Ainge’s, Isiah Thomas’s and the Kevin McHale’s out there, maybe whoever runs sh!t over at the worldwide follower will allow us to rip him/her off).
